1. The Television
Ever since television has made its way into homes, it has impact our lives like no other invention has. The
television is a gateway into worlds we may never see, a doorway to endless journeys and struggles we
may never experience.
In the early stages of development, a combination of optical, mechanical and electronic technologies were
used to capture, transmit and display images on the television. In 1884, a student from Germany, Paul
Gottlieb Nipkow, acquired the patent for the first electromechanical television system. This system
utilized a scanning disk with a series of holes spiraling towards the center to facilitate rasterization.
However, Nipkow's design of the first electromechanical system didn't materialize until amplifier tube
technology was upgraded in 1907. It took several years after that to figure out how to use technology in
order to transmit and display moving images on the screen in a more efficient way.
In 1927, Philo Taylor Farnsworth patented the first television system featuring electronic scanning of
pickup as well as display devices.Farnsworth’s television patents covered scanning, focusing,
synchronizing, contract, control, and power. He televised a motion picture film to demonstrate his
television system to media.
With the introduction in 1929 of regular television broadcasts, Germany was the first country to witness
the first use of television within two years of the invention of television. It wasn’t until 1939 when the
development of color receiver paved the way for introduction of color television.
Many have said that the television technology is the most advanced technology on the planet. Even
though the television has been fully established for about sixty years, the advances in it are amazing,
resulting in a new version almost every year. Fifty years ago, the images were small and blurry. Now, a
whole millennium later, the images are big and bright in color and have surround sound. Because of the
invention of the television, moving pictures can now be transmitted across miles of distance, countries
can be informed on ground-breaking news, and families can gather together at a special time each night to
watch their favorite program.
