Introduction
 Belgium is smaller in area
than the state of Haryana.
 It shares borders with
France, Netherlands,
Germany and Luxembourg.
 It has a population of a little
over one crore.

The Quandary
 The minority French speaking community
was relatively rich and powerful.
 This was resented by the Dutch speaking
community who got the benefit of economic
development and education much later.
 This led to tensions between the Dutch
speaking and the French speaking
community during the 50s and 60s.
 The tension between the 2 communities was
acute in Brussels (capital of Belgium) as the
Dutch speaking was a minority here.

6. POWER SHARING IN BELGIUM
The Solution
•Equal number of Ministers from Dutch and French
speaking areas in the Central Govt.
•No single community can make decisions unilaterally
•Transfer of power from the centre to the state. State
government. will not be a subordinate to the centre.
• Separate govt. in Brussels with equal
representation for the French and the Dutch.
•Formation of COMMUNITY Government elected by
the people belonging to one language community
Dutch, French and German wherever they live.
