Application Story
Feeder automation, a part of power distribution, has the function of monitoring, control,
SCADA and FDIR on the distribution network. The system includes feeder dispatch and
control center (FDCC), feeder remote terminal unit (FRTU) and feeder terminal units (FTU).
Renewing power distribution system in Taiwan is the main task of its smart grid network
development. Since 2009 TPC (TaiPower Company), the national electricity company of
Taiwan, has started to upgrade feeder automation systems with up-to-date information
and communication technologies. More than 8,500 pcs of FTU have been upgraded in the
past few years.
While the distribution network covers a wide range of areas, it is subjected to heavy
weather and environmental conditions which may result in inevitable failures. TPC chose
HCE as its FTU vender and system integrator to build a reliable and high quality
distribution network.
Korenix’ feeder automation network solution was adapted to implement the fiber
network along the distribution system. Each JetNet 4508f, Korenix’ industrial 6+2 fiber
Ethernet switch, in the FTU transmitted the data to the SCADA system. By enabling
Korenix redundant ring technology, the MSR, any failure on the fiber links can be easily
detected, identified, and recovered (FDIR). The failure location is also reported to
administrators through Korenix visualized network management system, the JetView pro,
which, as a result, minimizes the error handling time.

Failure Identification
In addition to identifying type of failures
(for example broken link, error in the ring
configuration, broadcast storm problem
and so on), the system identifies the
failure position as well.
Failure Recovery/Restoration
A link failure is recovered within 5 ms to
ensure the continuous network service.
During link restoration, Korenix Seamless
Restoration guarantees a 0 ms process
without any side effect to the network.
