• 80% of the world population lives on less than $10 a day.
• Nearly 1/2 of the world’s population — more than 3 billion people — live on less than $2.50 a day.
More than 1.3 billion live in extreme poverty — less than $1.25 a day.
• 1 billion children worldwide are living in poverty. According to UNICEF, 22,000 children die each day
due to poverty.
What is Poverty?
Poverty is the state of one who lacks a usual or socially acceptable amount of money or material
possessions
People suffering from poverty :
• Do not have enough money to meet basic needs such as food, clothing and shelter
• Are not able to participate in recreational activities
• Are much less educated and vulnerable to diseases
Poverty in Singapore
>Despite being one of the richest nations in the world, Poverty is still a major
issue that requires our attention.
>In Singapore, an estimated 105,000 families who earn $1500 a month on
average, which is barely enough to make ends meet. (2012)
