Introduction
There are numerous concepts an views regarding posture and
its significance. Posture broadly speaking may be understood from
the stand points of an individual’s own body and the way to uses
his body to carries his body. Each person should make their best
adopting good posture as habits. A good posture is the one which
requires a minimum expenditure of energy for the maintenance of
good posture.
“According to Metheny”:
“There is no single best posture for the individuals. Each person
must take the body he has and make the best of it. For each
posture is that in which the body segments are balanced in the
position of least strain and maximum support. This is an
individual matter.

•Posture is defined as "the position or bearing of the body" and
refers to the overall alignment of the various body parts to each
other when the person is standing in a relaxed stance.
•Posture is the result of many underlying processes and
tensional relationships throughout the body.
POSTURE acronym for easy reference:
P:-Pelvis in neutral, with weight distributed
O:-on the whole foot.
S:-Stable joints;
T:-Tight abdominals;
U:-upright ribs;
R:-retracted shoulders and
E:-ear over shoulder.
CLASSIFICATION OF POSTURE
A. Inactive Posture
B. Active
A) Static Posture
B) Dynamic posture
Posture is the position in which you hold your body upright
against gravity while standing, sitting or lying down.
Good posture involves training your body to stand, walk, sit
and lie in positions where the least strain is placed on
supporting muscles and ligaments during movement or
weight-bearing activities.
What is Good Posture
1. Helps decrease the abnormal wearing of joint surfaces that could
result in arthritis.
2. Decreases the stress on the ligaments holding the joints of the spine
together.
3. Prevents the spine from becoming fixed in abnormal positions.
4. Keeps bones and joints in the correct alignment so that muscles are
being used properly.
5. Prevents fatigue because muscles are being used more efficiently,
allowing the body to use less energy.
6. Prevents strain or overuse problems.
Importance Of Good Posture
7. Prevents backache and muscular pain.
8. Portrays a better, more confident image.
9. Breathing becomes easier and deeper.
10. Improves circulation and digestion.
11. Change your frame of mind.
12. Improves concentration and mental performance.
Poor posture is the posture that results from certain muscles tightening up or shortening
while others lengthen and become weak which often occurs as a result of one's daily
activities.

CAUSES OF A POOR POSTURE
The causes of poor posture can broadly be classified into two categories:-
•Acquired- due to some accident or disease.
•Congenital- present at birth or hereditary.
The deformities caused due to poor posture can be of two types:
•Functional divergency
•Structural divergency
Injury: when a bone, ligament, or muscle is injured, it is likely to weaken the support at
that point and throw the framework out of balance. When such condition exists, it is not
possible to have a perfect posture
Disease: posture is greatly affected by the disease that weakens the bones or the muscles or
causes the joints to lose their strength or mobility
Habit: habits of posture, whether good or bad, are acquired in the same way as the habits of
walking, speaking or sitting, i.e. by practicing a certain type of coordination so many times
that the act becomes unconscious and habitual.
Weakness: it is not possible to assume and maintain erect posture without expenditure of
some energy. Such efforts, therefore, require some strength and endurance
Mental Attitude: Feelings of happiness, confidence and satisfaction help in maintaining a
balanced and erect posture, whereas depression and feeling of sadness pose hurdles in
maintaining proper posture.
Heredity: heredity is another factor which is responsible for poor or defective posture.
Hereditary defects like kyphosis and other genetic defects may cause poor posture.
COMMON CAUSES
Improper Clothing: the type of dress one wears also has impact on individual’s posture. For
example wearing tight fitted dress, tight shoes, high heel shoes etc. will result in adopting
poor posture
Improper Diet or Malnourishment: improper diet or malnourishment may result in various
diseases due to deficiencies of vitamins and minerals e.g. rickets etc. which result in adopting
faulty and poor posture.
Chronic Fatigue: due to continuous work, lack of rest and sound sleep, body tends to develop
fatigue, and such condition becomes chronic with persistence of such conditions.
Unhygienic Conditions: it is very common to find crowded class rooms with improper
sitting arrangement, improper furniture, improper and insufficient lighting arrangements etc
Lack of Exercise: exercises tone up the spinal nerves and abdominal organs, improve
appetite and digestion, promotes flexibility and co-ordination, reduces mental strain, and
provides energy, improves the physical ability and efficiency.
Improper Time Table: improperly planned school curriculum puts extra stress upon the
children
Lack of Awareness: many people are unaware regarding the concept of proper posture and
continue of to follow wrong or faulty postures.
Obesity: obesity or undue body overweight puts extra stress and strain on the muscular as well as
skeletal structure of the body which may result in postural deviations.
Occupation: certain occupations require sitting, standing or working in an imbalanced or
improper posture constantly for long hours, which may result in postural defects and deviations.
Poor Core Stability
 Poor posture causes deviation from the normally
aligned posture. As a result the body functions are
altered and this may lead to dysfunction and diseases.
Poor posture may cause one or more of the following
dysfunction;
1. Secondary deformities and compensatory postural
defects.
2. Easy fatigability and high energy expenditure
3. Decrease both respiratory and circulatory efficiency
4. Pain, bad cosmetic appearance and psychological
disturbance.
 Kyphosis.
 Lordosis.
 Scoliosis.
over time, the habit of less activity in
general and much more unbalanced motion by
sitting creates muscle imbalance.
performing posture exercises as a daily
life habit helps the body to move in ways it
would not otherwise move, strengthening the
body’s ability to move in balance.
adjust your habits, make postural
corrections and reinforce these changes with
functional exercises. Not only will look better,
but also will feel better and you will probably be
able to perform better for a longer time.

posture, cause, effect and remedial measures of bad posture

  • 2. Introduction There are numerous concepts an views regarding posture and its significance. Posture broadly speaking may be understood from the stand points of an individual’s own body and the way to uses his body to carries his body. Each person should make their best adopting good posture as habits. A good posture is the one which requires a minimum expenditure of energy for the maintenance of good posture.
  • 3. “According to Metheny”: “There is no single best posture for the individuals. Each person must take the body he has and make the best of it. For each posture is that in which the body segments are balanced in the position of least strain and maximum support. This is an individual matter.
  • 4. . •Posture is defined as "the position or bearing of the body" and refers to the overall alignment of the various body parts to each other when the person is standing in a relaxed stance. •Posture is the result of many underlying processes and tensional relationships throughout the body.
  • 5. POSTURE acronym for easy reference: P:-Pelvis in neutral, with weight distributed O:-on the whole foot. S:-Stable joints; T:-Tight abdominals; U:-upright ribs; R:-retracted shoulders and E:-ear over shoulder.

  • 7. Posture is the position in which you hold your body upright against gravity while standing, sitting or lying down. Good posture involves training your body to stand, walk, sit and lie in positions where the least strain is placed on supporting muscles and ligaments during movement or weight-bearing activities.   • 8. 1. Helps decrease the abnormal wearing of joint surfaces that could result in arthritis. 2. Decreases the stress on the ligaments holding the joints of the spine together. 3. Prevents the spine from becoming fixed in abnormal positions. 4. Keeps bones and joints in the correct alignment so that muscles are being used properly. 5. Prevents fatigue because muscles are being used more efficiently, allowing the body to use less energy. 6. Prevents strain or overuse problems. Importance Of Good Posture

  • 11. Poor posture is the posture that results from certain muscles tightening up or shortening while others lengthen and become weak which often occurs as a result of one's daily activities. Poor Posture CAUSES OF A POOR POSTURE The causes of poor posture can broadly be classified into two categories:- •Acquired- due to some accident or disease. •Congenital- present at birth or hereditary. The deformities caused due to poor posture can be of two types: •Functional divergency •Structural divergency
  • 12. Injury: when a bone, ligament, or muscle is injured, it is likely to weaken the support at that point and throw the framework out of balance. When such condition exists, it is not possible to have a perfect posture Disease: posture is greatly affected by the disease that weakens the bones or the muscles or causes the joints to lose their strength or mobility Habit: habits of posture, whether good or bad, are acquired in the same way as the habits of walking, speaking or sitting, i.e. by practicing a certain type of coordination so many times that the act becomes unconscious and habitual. Weakness: it is not possible to assume and maintain erect posture without expenditure of some energy. Such efforts, therefore, require some strength and endurance Mental Attitude: Feelings of happiness, confidence and satisfaction help in maintaining a balanced and erect posture, whereas depression and feeling of sadness pose hurdles in maintaining proper posture. Heredity: heredity is another factor which is responsible for poor or defective posture. Hereditary defects like kyphosis and other genetic defects may cause poor posture. COMMON CAUSES
  • 13. Improper Clothing: the type of dress one wears also has impact on individual’s posture. For example wearing tight fitted dress, tight shoes, high heel shoes etc. will result in adopting poor posture Improper Diet or Malnourishment: improper diet or malnourishment may result in various diseases due to deficiencies of vitamins and minerals e.g. rickets etc. which result in adopting faulty and poor posture. Chronic Fatigue: due to continuous work, lack of rest and sound sleep, body tends to develop fatigue, and such condition becomes chronic with persistence of such conditions. Unhygienic Conditions: it is very common to find crowded class rooms with improper sitting arrangement, improper furniture, improper and insufficient lighting arrangements etc Lack of Exercise: exercises tone up the spinal nerves and abdominal organs, improve appetite and digestion, promotes flexibility and co-ordination, reduces mental strain, and provides energy, improves the physical ability and efficiency. Improper Time Table: improperly planned school curriculum puts extra stress upon the children
  • 14. Lack of Awareness: many people are unaware regarding the concept of proper posture and continue of to follow wrong or faulty postures. Obesity: obesity or undue body overweight puts extra stress and strain on the muscular as well as skeletal structure of the body which may result in postural deviations. Occupation: certain occupations require sitting, standing or working in an imbalanced or improper posture constantly for long hours, which may result in postural defects and deviations. Poor Core Stability
  • 15.  Poor posture causes deviation from the normally aligned posture. As a result the body functions are altered and this may lead to dysfunction and diseases. Poor posture may cause one or more of the following dysfunction; 1. Secondary deformities and compensatory postural defects. 2. Easy fatigability and high energy expenditure 3. Decrease both respiratory and circulatory efficiency 4. Pain, bad cosmetic appearance and psychological disturbance.
