• BY TAHIR BHAT
• DCPE AMRAVATI
INTRODUCTION
• MASSAGE IS THE SYSTEMATIC,
MECHANICAL STIMULATION OF THE
SOFT TISSUES OF THE BODY BY
MEANS OF RHYTHMICALLY APPLIED
PRESSURE AND STRETCHING FOR
THERAPEUTIC PURPOSES
INTRODUCTION
SPORT MASSAGE IS USED:-
 BEFORE
 DURING
 AFTER
ATHELETIC EVENTS…
THE PURPOSE OF MASSAGE
 TO PREVENT INJURIES
 TO RELIEVE SWELLING
 TO DRAIN ANY FATIQUE
 TO PROMOTE FLEXIBILITY
 PREPARE THE ATHELETE FOR PEAK PERFORMANCE
 PROVIDES A WARM-UP TO LOOSEN MUSCLES PRE EVENT
 TO REDUCE MUSCLE TENSION AND INFLAMMATION POST
EVENT
MASSAGE HAS NO EFFECT ON
• OBESITY
• MUSCLE MASS
• MUSCLE STRENGTH
TYPES OF MASSAGE
 THAI MASSAGE
 TUI NA MASSAGE
 SPORTS MASSAGE
 SHIATSU MASSAGE
 AQUATIC MASSAGE
 SWEDISH MASSAGE
 TRIGGER POINT MASSAGE
SPORT MASSAGE
• SPORT MASSAGE TECHNIQUES ARE QUITE SIMILAR TO
SWEDISH MASSAGE
• HOW IS SPORTS MASSAGE DIFFERENT FROM OTHER TYPES
OF THERAPEUTIC MASSAGE?
 -IN SPORTS MASSAGE THE THERAPIST MAY APPLY THE
TECHNIQUES MORE FIRMLY & DEEPER THAN A GENERAL
MASSAGE THERAPIST MIGHT
 -USE MORE FRICTIONS TO BREAK DOWN ADHESIONS &
SOFTEN SCAR TISSUES
 -ARE DESIGNED TO REDUCE INJURY
TECHNIQUES OF SPORTS
MASSAGE
• EFFLEURAGE
• LIGHT GLIDING STROKES
OVER SKIN WITHOUT MOVING
DEEP MUSCLE MASSES USED
FOR MUSCLE RELAXATION
• PETRISSAGE
• KNEADING MANIPULATION
THAT INTERMITTENTLY
LIFT,PRESS & ROLL THE
MUSCLES UNDER THE
FINGERS OR HANDS.
• USED FOR INCREASING
CIRCULATION AND REDUCING
EDEMA
TECHNIQUES OF SPORTS
MASSAGE
•PERCUSSION (TAPOTMENT)
- SERIES OF ALTERNATING BLOWS S/A
HACKING,
SLAPPING,
BEATING,
PINCHING,
TAPPING WITH FINGER TIPS,
CUPPING,
CLAPPING,
- USED TO STIMULATE CIRCULATION & DESENSITIZED
OPERATED SITES.
TECHNIQUES OF SPORTS
MASSAGE
• FRICTION-
CIRCULAR
• MOTION OF THE THERAPIST’S
FINGERTIPS WITH PRESSURE
APPLIED SO THAT THE
THERAPIST’S FINGERS AND
PATIENT’S SKIN MOVE AS ONE.
• IT IS USED TO LOOSEN OR BREAK
UP UNDERLYING ADHESIONS OF
HEALED SCAR TISSUES
TECHNIQUES OF SPORTS
MASSAGE
• VIBRATION
• FINE TREMULOUS
MOVEMENT MADE
BY HANDS OR
FINGERS TO CAUSE
THE PART TO
VIBRATE
INJURY MANAGEMENT
THROUGH SPORT MASSAGE
• ATHELETES ALWAYS OVERUSE THEIR MUSCLES, CAUSING
• STRAIN
• TEARS
• IMBALANCES IN THE SOFT MUSCLES TISSUES
• THE MORE INJURY IS IGNORED
INJURY MANAGEMENT
THROUGH SPORT MASSAGE
• ONE WAY TO ENCOURAGE MUSCLE REPAIR AFTER
TRAINING IS WITH SPORTS MASSAGE.
• SPORTS MASSAGE WILL HELP RELEASE ANY BUILT UP
TENSION AND LACTIC ACID IN THE OVERWORKED MUSCLES
SO THAT BLOOD AND OXYGEN CAN RETURN TO THE
MUSCLE AND EFFECTIVELY PROMOTE MUSCLE REPAIR.
• SPORTS MASSAGE IF RECEIVED AS PARTS OF A SPORTS
PROGRAMME, CAN HELP AN ATHELETE PREVENT INJURY
DUE TO OVERUSE
PRE-EVENT MASSAGE
• USUALLY BRIEF AND INVIGORATING
(sekejap & menyegarkan)
• LASTING 15-20 MINUTES
• IT IS GIVEN WITHIN AN HOUR BEFORE
THE SPORTING EVENT
POST-EVENT MASSAGE
• SHOULD BE CALMING AND RELAXING
• ITS GOAL IS:-
 TO REDUCE INFLAMMATION.
 TO RELIEVE MUSCLES PAIN BY DECREASING TENSION
 TO RELIEVE MUSCLE SORENESS BY DISPENSING LACTIC
ACID
• MASSAGE SHOULD LAST NO MORE THAN 20 MINUTES.
MASSAGE PROCEDURES
• MASSAGE TECHNIQUES MUST BE CARRIED OUT IN SEQUENCE.
• BEGINS WITH:-
1)EFFLEURAGE>
2)PETRISSAGE>
3)CIRCULAR FRICTION/MUSCLE STRIPPING>
4)TRIGGER POINTS>
5)FINISHING OFF WITH EFFLEURAGE
MASSAGE PROCEDURES
1) WASH HANDS
2) GIVE UNDIVIDED ATTENTION
3)SHOULD NOT UNLOAD YOUR OWN PERSONAL PROBLEMS ON
ATHELETE
4)MAKE YOUR DECISIONS
5)WEAR UNIFORM
6)MASSAGE THERAPIST SHOULD OBEY REFERER’S
INSTRUCTIONS
7)RECORD YOUR TREATMENT
MASSAGE PROCEDURES
EQUIPMENT
 A LUBRICANT
 SPORTS MASSAGE OIL
 CREAM
 TALCUM POWDER
 MASSAGE THERAPY TABLES
BENEFITS & EFFECTS OF MASSAGE
PHYSICAL EFFECTS
- PUMPING BLOOD
-INCREASED TISSUE PERMEABILITY BY OPENING THE TISSUE
PORES
-STRETCH TISSUES AND FASCIA
-BREAK DOWN SCAR TISSUES
-IMPROVE TISSUE ELASTICITY BY STRETCHING THE HARD AND
INELASTIC TISSUES
-OPENS MICRO-CIRCULATION
BENEFITS & EFFECTS OF
MASSAGE
PHYSIOLOGICAL EFFECTS
- PAIN REDUCTION BY RELEASING THE BODIES ENDORPHINS
- RELAXATION –MUSCLE RELAX THROUGH
HEAT GENERATED,CIRCULATION AND STRETCHING.
-MECHANORECEPTORS WHICH SENSE TOUCH, PRESSURE,
TISSUE LENGTH AND WARMTH ARE STIMULATED,CAUSING
A REFLEX RELAXATION.
BENEFITS & EFFECTS OF
MASSAGE
PSYCHOLOGICAL EFFECTS
1.ANXIETY REDUCTION
– THROUGH THE EFFECTS MENTIONED ABOVE RELAXATION IS
INDUCED AND SO REDUCES ANXIETY LEVELS
2.INVIGORATING
– IF MASSAGE IS DONE WITH BRISK MOVEMENTS
CONTRAINDICATIONS
• GOUT
• BURNS
• BURSITIS
• CONTUSIONS
• OPEN WOUNDS
•
• MUSCLE RUPTURES
• TENDON RUPTURES
• INFECTIONS OF THE SKIN AND SOFT TISSUES
THANK YOU

MASSAGE AND ITS TYPES

  • 1. MASSAGE • BY TAHIR BHAT • DCPE AMRAVATI
  • 2. INTRODUCTION • MASSAGE IS THE SYSTEMATIC, MECHANICAL STIMULATION OF THE SOFT TISSUES OF THE BODY BY MEANS OF RHYTHMICALLY APPLIED PRESSURE AND STRETCHING FOR THERAPEUTIC PURPOSES
  • 3. INTRODUCTION SPORT MASSAGE IS USED:-  BEFORE  DURING  AFTER ATHELETIC EVENTS…
  • 4. THE PURPOSE OF MASSAGE  TO PREVENT INJURIES  TO RELIEVE SWELLING  TO DRAIN ANY FATIQUE  TO PROMOTE FLEXIBILITY  PREPARE THE ATHELETE FOR PEAK PERFORMANCE  PROVIDES A WARM-UP TO LOOSEN MUSCLES PRE EVENT  TO REDUCE MUSCLE TENSION AND INFLAMMATION POST EVENT
  • 5. MASSAGE HAS NO EFFECT ON • OBESITY • MUSCLE MASS • MUSCLE STRENGTH
  • 6. TYPES OF MASSAGE  THAI MASSAGE  TUI NA MASSAGE  SPORTS MASSAGE  SHIATSU MASSAGE  AQUATIC MASSAGE  SWEDISH MASSAGE  TRIGGER POINT MASSAGE
  • 7. SPORT MASSAGE • SPORT MASSAGE TECHNIQUES ARE QUITE SIMILAR TO SWEDISH MASSAGE • HOW IS SPORTS MASSAGE DIFFERENT FROM OTHER TYPES OF THERAPEUTIC MASSAGE?  -IN SPORTS MASSAGE THE THERAPIST MAY APPLY THE TECHNIQUES MORE FIRMLY & DEEPER THAN A GENERAL MASSAGE THERAPIST MIGHT  -USE MORE FRICTIONS TO BREAK DOWN ADHESIONS & SOFTEN SCAR TISSUES  -ARE DESIGNED TO REDUCE INJURY
  • 8. TECHNIQUES OF SPORTS MASSAGE • EFFLEURAGE • LIGHT GLIDING STROKES OVER SKIN WITHOUT MOVING DEEP MUSCLE MASSES USED FOR MUSCLE RELAXATION • PETRISSAGE • KNEADING MANIPULATION THAT INTERMITTENTLY LIFT,PRESS & ROLL THE MUSCLES UNDER THE FINGERS OR HANDS. • USED FOR INCREASING CIRCULATION AND REDUCING EDEMA
  • 9. TECHNIQUES OF SPORTS MASSAGE •PERCUSSION (TAPOTMENT) - SERIES OF ALTERNATING BLOWS S/A HACKING, SLAPPING, BEATING, PINCHING, TAPPING WITH FINGER TIPS, CUPPING, CLAPPING, - USED TO STIMULATE CIRCULATION & DESENSITIZED OPERATED SITES.
  • 10. TECHNIQUES OF SPORTS MASSAGE • FRICTION- CIRCULAR • MOTION OF THE THERAPIST’S FINGERTIPS WITH PRESSURE APPLIED SO THAT THE THERAPIST’S FINGERS AND PATIENT’S SKIN MOVE AS ONE. • IT IS USED TO LOOSEN OR BREAK UP UNDERLYING ADHESIONS OF HEALED SCAR TISSUES
  • 11. TECHNIQUES OF SPORTS MASSAGE • VIBRATION • FINE TREMULOUS MOVEMENT MADE BY HANDS OR FINGERS TO CAUSE THE PART TO VIBRATE
  • 12. INJURY MANAGEMENT THROUGH SPORT MASSAGE • ATHELETES ALWAYS OVERUSE THEIR MUSCLES, CAUSING • STRAIN • TEARS • IMBALANCES IN THE SOFT MUSCLES TISSUES • THE MORE INJURY IS IGNORED
  • 13. INJURY MANAGEMENT THROUGH SPORT MASSAGE • ONE WAY TO ENCOURAGE MUSCLE REPAIR AFTER TRAINING IS WITH SPORTS MASSAGE. • SPORTS MASSAGE WILL HELP RELEASE ANY BUILT UP TENSION AND LACTIC ACID IN THE OVERWORKED MUSCLES SO THAT BLOOD AND OXYGEN CAN RETURN TO THE MUSCLE AND EFFECTIVELY PROMOTE MUSCLE REPAIR. • SPORTS MASSAGE IF RECEIVED AS PARTS OF A SPORTS PROGRAMME, CAN HELP AN ATHELETE PREVENT INJURY DUE TO OVERUSE
  • 14. PRE-EVENT MASSAGE • USUALLY BRIEF AND INVIGORATING (sekejap & menyegarkan) • LASTING 15-20 MINUTES • IT IS GIVEN WITHIN AN HOUR BEFORE THE SPORTING EVENT
  • 15. POST-EVENT MASSAGE • SHOULD BE CALMING AND RELAXING • ITS GOAL IS:-  TO REDUCE INFLAMMATION.  TO RELIEVE MUSCLES PAIN BY DECREASING TENSION  TO RELIEVE MUSCLE SORENESS BY DISPENSING LACTIC ACID • MASSAGE SHOULD LAST NO MORE THAN 20 MINUTES.
  • 16. MASSAGE PROCEDURES • MASSAGE TECHNIQUES MUST BE CARRIED OUT IN SEQUENCE. • BEGINS WITH:- 1)EFFLEURAGE> 2)PETRISSAGE> 3)CIRCULAR FRICTION/MUSCLE STRIPPING> 4)TRIGGER POINTS> 5)FINISHING OFF WITH EFFLEURAGE
  • 17. MASSAGE PROCEDURES 1) WASH HANDS 2) GIVE UNDIVIDED ATTENTION 3)SHOULD NOT UNLOAD YOUR OWN PERSONAL PROBLEMS ON ATHELETE 4)MAKE YOUR DECISIONS 5)WEAR UNIFORM 6)MASSAGE THERAPIST SHOULD OBEY REFERER’S INSTRUCTIONS 7)RECORD YOUR TREATMENT
  • 18. MASSAGE PROCEDURES EQUIPMENT  A LUBRICANT  SPORTS MASSAGE OIL  CREAM  TALCUM POWDER  MASSAGE THERAPY TABLES
  • 19. BENEFITS & EFFECTS OF MASSAGE PHYSICAL EFFECTS - PUMPING BLOOD -INCREASED TISSUE PERMEABILITY BY OPENING THE TISSUE PORES -STRETCH TISSUES AND FASCIA -BREAK DOWN SCAR TISSUES -IMPROVE TISSUE ELASTICITY BY STRETCHING THE HARD AND INELASTIC TISSUES -OPENS MICRO-CIRCULATION
  • 20. BENEFITS & EFFECTS OF MASSAGE PHYSIOLOGICAL EFFECTS - PAIN REDUCTION BY RELEASING THE BODIES ENDORPHINS - RELAXATION –MUSCLE RELAX THROUGH HEAT GENERATED,CIRCULATION AND STRETCHING. -MECHANORECEPTORS WHICH SENSE TOUCH, PRESSURE, TISSUE LENGTH AND WARMTH ARE STIMULATED,CAUSING A REFLEX RELAXATION.
  • 21. BENEFITS & EFFECTS OF MASSAGE PSYCHOLOGICAL EFFECTS 1.ANXIETY REDUCTION – THROUGH THE EFFECTS MENTIONED ABOVE RELAXATION IS INDUCED AND SO REDUCES ANXIETY LEVELS 2.INVIGORATING – IF MASSAGE IS DONE WITH BRISK MOVEMENTS
  • 22. CONTRAINDICATIONS • GOUT • BURNS • BURSITIS • CONTUSIONS • OPEN WOUNDS • • MUSCLE RUPTURES • TENDON RUPTURES • INFECTIONS OF THE SKIN AND SOFT TISSUES
