Kelsey Hipwell conducted research on existing film posters and the action/adventure genre to inform the design of their own poster. They learned conventions around color schemes, foreground elements, and lens flare effects. Creative decisions included keeping the foreground image in black and white to stand out against the background. Test images were tried before selecting one that worked best. The finished poster closely followed conventions of current posters through its color palette, inclusion of a villain in the background, and similar font.

The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

3. What creative decisions did you make at the different
stage of production?
• I made quite a few creative choices when making my poster, as I tried manydifferent
colour schemes and also different approaches to my poster, such as positioning and
background changes to give the poster a different look. One creative choice that I kept
throughout my poster creation was; making the foreground image black and white. This
gave my poster a more gritty look, so it could stand out from the rest of the background
and also have a more realistic contrast on the poster. At the end, I also decided to add
weapons, so that the movie poster looked more action/adventure than it already was.
Also, atfirst, I used a different image when producing my mock-up; after I realised that
this image would not work well with what I wanted, I re-took the image, so that the image
would look perfect with what I wanted. After trying different things with the image, I
came to a conclusion that I could do what I wanted with this image; so making this
creative decision helped with the creation of my poster.
4. How closely does your film poster follow the forms and
conventions of existing film posters?
• My poster closely follows the forms and conventions of current film posters, such as the
colour schemes of current DC Comics movie posters and also current Marvel posters;
which also helped me gather some ideas for what I should include in my poster, such as
fire in the background and the enemy of the movie in the distant background. Another
thing that I took for existing posters had to be the font too, I tried to find something similar
to current film posters, which gave it a better, closer look to what I was going for. I also
used the same Billing blocks that nearly every movie in this century uses, which gives you
a small insight to who is in the film; which also made the bottom of my movie poster
similar to most Action/Adventure posters. The reason why I used these forms was to get
my poster to look as close to something you would see made by a major picture
production, which is why my forms would look similar to most other posters.
5. How would your film posters appeal to the target
audience?
• My film posters would appeal to my target audience, as I
have used many conventions from current film posters
(that appeal to the audience) to make my poster similar,
yet unique at the same time. I also tried to make my story
appeal to my target audience, so that backgrounds,
foreground images and overall colours meet what my
target audience will want. I also think using myself as the
foreground image, makes it look more appealing to
teenagers too, as I am in that demographic.
6. How successful are your finished film posters? What
are their strengths and weaknesses?
• I think that the creation of my posters went well, as I worked as
quickly as I could, yet I also put in as much effort as possible;
adjusting every poster till I thought it was good enough. I think
what went well with my posters, was that the colour contrasts for
the text and the foreground image, made the poster stand out
and look unique. However I think it would have been better if I
could of thought of a tagline to make my poster look better; and
also add more techniques that I have learnt. However, I did
include techniques like: Titles, Greek Billing Blocks, Release Dates
and also the use of different camera techniques, as I changed the
foreground from a close up, to a medium shot of myself.
