Question 1
In what ways does your media
product use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions
of real media products?
Trailer conventions.
For my trailer, me and my group used a
variety of different stereo-typical trailer
conventions such as using a
title, introducing the main characters and
the locations. These were used in my trailer
because I think it is important that these
things are introduced to give the audience
an idea of where the trailer is set, which
should also lead them to knowing that it is
in the horror genre. Using the title is
important so that the audience know what
the trailer is called.
Poster conventions.
Typical poster conventions that were used
on my poster was, images text and the
layout. We decided as a group to use the
layout of a typical movie poster to add a
sense of realisation to the poster for the
audience. We used images of the setting
for our poster as this could not only inform
the audience that it is a horror poster, but
they will also be able to link this to the
website as they have the same image on.
Website conventions.
Conventions for a website are similar to
a poster. We used a typical layout again
for the website as we thought it would
also add a sense of realisation for the
audience. The images was the same as
on the poster so that the audience
could link together the 2 products.
Horror conventions.
I think that following horror conventions was most important
because it is crucial for the audience to be aware of the
genre because if they don’t then the use of the different
conventions would’ve been pointless. Dark colours were
used a lot through out all of our products, as the use pf
colour and lighting would’ve been visible throughout all of
our products, we knew that this would be important, so we
stuck to black, grey and red. The figure that featured in our
trailer, what the whole film would be about, is a good
horror convention to use as it was mysterious figure and it
left the audience questioning what or who the figure
was, which was our main aim as our products was a
psychological horror.
Challenging conventions.
Throughout all of our products we only challenged
the locations for our horror conventions as we chose
the school/sixth form for one of our locations as we
knew this wasn’t a typical horror setting therefore
leaving the audience questioning whether this was
a typical horror movie. Challenging conventions is
something we should have done more throughout
the products as it adds a sense of difference to the
products which would have left the audience
feeling more tension which is a horror convention.
Next time we should consider maybe using bright
colours to challenge other horror conventions.
