Callan Hammond is a photographer whose work is being analyzed. The analysis examines four black and white photos taken by Hammond in Manchester. The first two photos feature the same Jamaican man, one as a close-up and one with more background visible. The third photo shows Hammond's friend Joe Copsey looking into the distance in Manchester city center. All three apply a black and white filter and show the significance of backgrounds. The fourth photo is in color and features an unidentified smoking man partially obscured by blue smoke in a subway tunnel, creating a unique and effective image through its focused composition.

3. Image Analysis
Each one of these Photos were taken and edited by Callan Hammond, a
photographer at which I know personally. I really appreciate his work and it inspires
me. Each one of these photos is similar composition wise and they also all are located
within the Manchester area.
The first 2 feature the same person. And they feature a black and white filter on them;
the first is a close up and doesn’t show much apart from the man. Whereas the
second picture features more a background even if it is out of focus. It definitely has
a wider field of depth; you can see an awful lot in the back ground as well as the
foreground. It’s apparent from the pictures that the man featuring is Jamaican. It’s
sort of obvious by the way it was done. Mainly by the way that in the second picture
the man has a cigarette, its cliché for a Jamaican to smoke so it works. What I really
like about these 2 photos is that the man looks really happy. Yeah, he does look a
little scruffy and that he doesn’t have an awful lot but at least he’s happy. I think
that’s the impression Callan wanted to express.
The 3rd picture features a different person called Joe Copsey. Again he is another
close friend to Callan. This photo was taken in Manchester’s city centre near Urbis.
You can tell this by the CIS building featuring in the background. This is how the
photos are similar in the way that the background is just as significant as the
foreground is. The buildings in the background are important when it comes to
Manchester’s Skyline; it’s a significant part of Manchester. The photo was taken
around the beginning of 2014. I really like how Joe looks like he’s looking into the

4. distance. If the frame of this photo was extended you would see that he is actually
looking into the distance as they’re stood on a balcony of a building. It’s as though
he is admiring his town. Similar to the fashion images I looked at by Callan this photo
could have easily fell into that category by the way he is dressed. The clothing choice
is very unique and different wearing brands which not many people will know. Also,
with this photo it is similar to the 2 above, with the black and white filter, they really
work. I think during the day when this photo was taken it was quite a sunny and bright
day. This is why I believe Callan used the Black and white filter. Because if you look in
the background and at the buildings and the sky it looks bright and clear as though
the sun was out. But I’ve, mentioned this with other pieces of Callan’s work. He likes
that back grounds to look dull and bland, it adds to the emotion captured within the
photo. I like this photo for that how it feels like its holding things from you.
And the last picture is different from the other 3, this one actually has colour. It was
taken under a subway tunnel in Manchester. I am unsure of the time it was taken and
the person featuring, I do know that he has featured in other pieces of Callan’s work
before. One thing I absolutely love about this photo is the smoke, it is so effective. I
love how the man isn’t in full sight. And the fact he doesn’t look fazed by what is
going on. I think it works so well. Also I like how the smoke is blue, like I mentioned
earlier it adds colour to it and a really strong effect. I seriously love how unique it looks
as well as effective. For this picture I’m presuming Callan would have used a tri-pod
to stabilize the camera whilst the smoke was in the right position, he probably took a
few different pictures and just chose the one he preferred the most. H may have used
a portable smoke machine because I don’t know how he’d of got the smoke to look
that thick if it wasn’t from a machine. Another strength I think is incredibly effective is
the fact that the photo is focused on the man’s face and not on the smoke. This
would’ve been really hard when taking the photo but he could have edited it to look
a little better later on. I just think it’s really good how there is smoke on his face but it is
still focused perfectly. One last thing is the effectiveness of it being in the tunnel. For
one the smoke wouldn’t have been disturbed as easy but the graphite. It looks really
cool and adds to the picture. Especially behind the guy, because it is out of focus it
just adds to it.
