Portable Electrical Equipment
Almost 25% of all serious electrical accidents involve
portable equipment. Conditions and practices that are
likely to lead to accidents include using unsuitable
equipment, maintenance and use of defective apparatus.
Failure to maintain equipment is a major cause of
accidents, however the likelihood and severity of accidents
occurring will vary depending on;-
 The type of electrical equipment
 The way in which it is used
 The environment in which it is used.
Most portable equipment is used on a daily basis so it is easy to become over familiar with them.
This could result in a number of dangers being present in the working environment, including fire and
electric shock.
To reduce risk, be on the lookout for defects and uphold the following company procedures when it comes
to controlling and mitigating any dangers;-
Use of Unsuitable Equipment: – Under no circumstances should we use unauthorised electrical equipment
(i.e. not company property.) All unauthorised equipment will be confiscated immediately.
Use of defective Equipment: – If the equipment that you are using develops a fault or becomes defective
quarantine it. Replacements will be provided where necessary.
Misuse of Equipment: - Employees should use all portable hand tools in the correct manner, be vigilant of
any bad habits or complacency creeping in.
Inadequate Maintenance: - In accordance with company procedure all 110 and 230V items that are used
on site including electrical hand/power tools must be inspected and tested by a competent person every 3
months. When it comes to items in workshops the frequency of inspection goes from 3 to 6 months, as the
equipment should not be subjected to such a harsh environment. Following this toolbox please check the
PAT test sticker of grinders etc. to ensure it is within date.
