12 TIPS TO A SAFER CHRISTMAS
During December the monthly average number of fires, injuries and fatalities more than
doubles in households across the UK.
We would like to ensure everyone has a safe and happy festive season and ask that you
take a moment to read these top tips for keeping you and your family safe this Christmas
and New Year.
1. Smoke Alarms
Ensure you test your smoke alarms regularly and NEVER remove the batteries from your
smoke alarms.
2. Carbon Monoxide
Remember Carbon Monoxide is the hidden killer and its production increases the more we
heat our homes. Ensure you keep your heating appliances in good working order and fit a
CO detector in your house.
3. Leaks

4. Electrics
Don't overload sockets. Ensure that there is only one plug per socket.
5. Enjoying A Drink At Christmas
In 33% of all house fires alcohol consumption was a contributing factor.
6. Safe Cooking + Food Handling
Don’t wash your Christmas turkey. This practice significantly increases the risk of
contaminating other work surfaces. One in 5 of us will risk food poisoning by eating turkey
that is past its shelf life after cooking.
7. Candle Safety
Never leave burning candles unattended and ensure they are out of reach from pets and
children.
8. Decorations
Remember, decorations are nice but they are mostly flammable, so keep them away from
naked flames and be aware of them causing trip hazards.

9. Using Heaters
If you are using extra heaters ensure they are away from curtains, sofas, Christmas trees
and decorations etc.
10. Smoking
Put your cigarette out and check it is fully extinguished before bed. Do not leave e-cigarettes
on charge overnight, faulty e cigs have caused over 200 fires within the UK.
11. Unwanted Visitors
Burglaries are more common over the Christmas period - make it harder for thieves by: Not
leaving valuable presents on display, only putting out packaging of new presents the day
before your waste collection.
12. Winter Driving
Driving is still one of the most dangerous activities you will undertake this Christmas. Allow
more time to travel, ensure your car is fit for winter and Do not Drink + Drive.
If in doubt, leave the car at home and get a taxi!
Merry Christmas and a Happy, Prosperous
and
Safe New Year to you and your Families
