Poly vinyl chloride (PVC) is produced through free radical chain polymerization of vinyl chloride monomers in the presence of initiators like benzoyl peroxide or hydrogen peroxide. PVC is a colorless, non-flammable and chemically inert powder with a specific gravity of 1.33 and melting point of 148°C. It is resistant to atmospheric conditions but not stable under heat and UV radiation. PVC has applications as both plasticized and unplasticized forms for uses like electrical insulation, chemical containers, safety equipment, and components of appliances and vehicles.
