This document outlines the course programme for a 5-day course on plant biodiversity and health held from July 18-22, 2011. The course will include presentations, practical laboratory activities, and field trips. On the first day, students will learn about aromatic plant biodiversity and essential oil isolation through distillation and chromatography. They will also study essential oil structures. The second day includes a field trip to Montseny Biosphere Reserve to observe different plant communities and medicinal plants. Later days involve workshops, laboratory activities to detect plant compounds, and visits to companies using medicinal plants or producing fragrances. The objectives are to learn about medicinal plant biodiversity and its roles in traditional medicine, health care, and industry.

5. 8.00h-19.00 h Botanical excursion – Montseny biosphere reserve (We will go by bus from School of Pharmacy) (Dr. Josep Vicens, Dr. Angels Bonet and Dr. Francisco Pérez) A one-day field trip will be held to Montseny massif, located in the North of Catalan Prelittoral Range. The region comprises a surface of around 800 km2, and has a population of approximately 80,000. Montseny massif is a Natural Park, and from 1978 it is one of the Biosphere Reserves included in the network of UNESCO's program "Man and Biosphere”. Course programme Tuesday, July 19, 2011

6. BOTANICAL EXCURSION 8.00 h means at eight o’clock sharp Gaudi gate

8. Four main reasons led us to choose this place: 1) It is just 50 km far from Barcelona. 2) Irrespective of the proximity to a big urban area its flora is very rich (around 1,500 vascular plant species) and reasonably well kept. 3) In a relatively short altitudinal transect, from sea level to 1700 m, we can observe the most important European landscape, with communities representing Mediterranean, Euro-siberian and Boreo-Alpine vegetation. 4) The massif is very rich in useful, especially medicinal plants (more than 500 are known and used by people in this zone).
