This document provides guidance for teachers on designing tiered activities to differentiate instruction. It includes a planning tool to help teachers create three tiers of an activity tailored to different student ability levels, while still meeting common learning goals. The tool guides teachers to first design the most advanced tier to challenge all students, then scaffold the activity down while maintaining the goals. Teachers are encouraged to get feedback and try differentiating an unfamiliar subject. Administrators should check that all tiers lead to competency in the goals and are respectful for each student ability level.
