2. Anti- Sentimental Comedy
❖ An anti- sentimental comedy is also called
“comedy of Manner”.when Sentimental comedy
begins to less popular and boring, that time anti-
sentimental comedy was created by “Oliver
Goldsmith”and “Richard Sheridan”.
❖ It is an artificial comedy, arose during 18th
century. The dramatist of this period wrote plays
according to middle class family & their interest.
3. Oliver Goldsmith
❖ Oliver Goldsmith (1728-1774)
❖ Pioneer of anti-sentimental
comedy
❖ First criticized sentimental
comedy in his essay “essay on
theatre”, as sentimental
comedy is not satisfied as
literary form of comedy.
4. SHE STOOPS TO CONQUER
❖ “She stoops to conquer” is a
play.
❖ It’s set in Britain just prior to
the American Revolution, so
we can also see some upper
class mentality in Britain at that
time.
6. Class Based Mentality
❖ This play base on upper class so,
definitely we can see class based
mentality of people.
❖ The decision that the characters make
are based on what class they are.
❖ i.e. Tony openly loves a low class
people but Marlow must hide his love
for kate as he thinks she is a poor
barmaid who belongs to good family
but no fortune.
7. Appearance and behavior
❖ In this play Goldsmith highlights major human factor or
element is one’s appearance and behavior.
❖ Today we believes that by someone's behavior we can’t
identify his real nature as who he is, yet many characters
in the play are be defrauded to a character’s behavior.
❖ Marlow and Hasting treated Mr. Hardcastle cruelly
because they think him the landlord of an inn, and
confused by his behavior, which seems forward.
❖ Throughout the play the characters assume that they
understood someone's behavior but actually it's not alike
8. Writer’s Aim
❖ Though this play we can see
Goldsmith’s aims to reintroduce the
audience to the “Laughing
Comedy”that derived from history of
comedy but, it's aims is gives us pure
laugh as a audience.
❖ This type of comedy stands in contrast
with the “ Sentimental comedy”,
because sentimental comedy is full of
moral preaching and tears.
