Mating Among Seahorse Research Paper
Mating among Seahorses
by
Tina Huang
February 12, 2015 Organisms have participated in mating in order to pass their offspring into another
generation. Mating refers to when animals court and breed each other, an act of reproduction. Male
pregnancy is the norm for seahorses, becoming a part of behavioral evolution. Male parental care has
led to the broad diversity of seahorses or sympatric speciation. Seahorses use assortative mating, also
known as choosing mates based on their body size. The dependency of this type of mating was a
consequence of the monogamous mating system and lifestyle of seahorses. Monogamous pairing is
when marriage is to one entity at a time, compared to bigamy or polygamy. The demonstrated
adaptative differences such as size in the same habitat proves the occurrence of sympatric divergence.
Is that the only factor that influences the rise of new seahorse species? In this paper, I will examine
five studies, from vast areas relating to the mating of seahorses and their patterns of mating behavior,
illustrating its role in sympatric speciation. Altogether these studies demonstrate the uniqueness of
seahorses and provide a new outlook on the diversity that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Public Rituals In Renaissance Florence Essay
Public ritual in Renaissance Florence involved many actors and took many forms. They could be civic
rituals performed by the citizens of the city, or popular rituals where anyone could participate. They
could also originate in the private sphere and were made available to the public. Public rituals had
various purposes, but most importantly they reproduced hierarchies which conditioned the
organisation of power within the Florentine polity, and ensured civil peace and harmony. This was
particularly important in Renaissance Florence as no one monarch ruled the city, and therefore no
singular figure embodying authority and morality could be looked up to by the people. Keeping law
and order was the ruling class major concern, and public rituals ... Show more content on

The portrait of Giuliano de Medici by Raphael, a tempera and oil on canvas, can be dated back to
around 1515 (Fig. 2). The portrait includes a background depiction of Florence, which is revealed
behind a green curtain. As part of a marriage arrangement with Philiberte of Savoy, it is not surprising
that Florence would be depicted as an asset of Giuliano s. However, the picture was painted shortly
after the carnival of 1513, and it highlights the sort of relationship that the Medici family wanted to re
establish with the city and its people, using public rituals to achieve this. Giuliano s gaze is directed to
the part of the curtain revealing the city, thus asserting his status as legimate ruler, watching over the
people of Florence. This painting and the carnival of 1513 convey similar messages. When Girolamo
Macchietti executed a portrait of Lorenzo the Magnificent, he used a similar device (Fig. 3). Lorenzo
stands tall with Florence in the background, and he looks forward benevolently. What the Medicis
attempted to achieve with public rituals, they successfully managed to reflect in their portraiture. With
their backs turned to the city, they would have appeared to contemporaries as larger than life leaders
protecting Florence s interests and history. The link between the two portraits is interesting because
the carnival of 1513 was a clear attempt at

Essay on The Ambiguity in Hawthorne s Young Goodman Brown
The Ambiguity in Young Goodman Brown
The literary critics agree that there is considerable ambiguity in Nathaniel Hawthorne s Young
Goodman Brown. This essay intends to illustrate the previous statement and to analyze the cause of
this ambiguity.
Henry James in Hawthorne, when discussing Young Goodman Brown comments on how imaginative
it is, then mentions how allegorical Hawthorne is, and how allegory should be expressed clearly:
I frankly confess that I have, as a general thing, but little enjoyment of it, and that it has never seemed
to me to be, as it were, a first rate literary form. . . . But it is apt to spoil two good things a story and a
moral, a meaning and a form; and the taste for it is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ambivalence, or the simultaneous and contradictory attitude and/or feelings toward an object, etc.,
may well be the cause of the extreme ambiguity, doubt, uncertainty in the mind of the reader of Young
Goodman Brown. Intentional ambivalence on the part of the author in order not to offend too many is
a plausible explanation, as I would see things.
Terence Martin in Nathaniel Hawthorne expresses what I interpret as a possible source for the
ambiguity in Young Goodman Brown :
Assumed in the tale is a radical distinction between dream life and real life; the question proposed to
Goodman Brown is into which of these categories good and evil naturally belong. At the outset of the
story, Faith asks her husband to postpone his journey until sunrise and sleepin his own bed that night. .
. . Mulling over the guilty purpose that has brought him into the forest, Goodman Brown recalls Faith
s talk of dreams. . . . In the forest he goes through a dreamlike experience. . . . The devil, furthermore,
introduces a further notion of a dream. . . . Thus the counterpoised terms, dream and relity, are shown
to depend for their application upon a prior attitude toward the moral nature of the world. For the
devil, virtue is a dream; evil, the only reality(91).
It would seem that Martin s analysis

Love And Hate In George Orwell s 1984
Without love we tend to grow a sense of hatred within ourselves and for each other. In the novel,
1984, Big Brother is portrayed as the leader in society, symbolizing a god like figure who has total
dominance over their citizens. Therefore, the people find themselves full of hate considering their
government is controlling them. George Orwell s message in 1984 claims that a society based on hate
would not survive seeing that the people would be the cause of their own destruction.
The story 1984 focuses on a man named Winston Smith, who lives in Oceania, an imaginative
country, ruled by the Party through a totalitarianism government. In their world, people are divided by
three social groups such as the Inner Party, the Outer Party, and the Proles. ... Show more content on

In the story, the Party uses the power of hate to take advantage of the people into loving Big Brother.
For example, the point when Winston and Julia had a love affair with each other, was not only for lust
but also to rebel against their government. With regard to their love affair the novel states Not merely
the love of one person, but the animal instinct , the simple undifferentiated desire: the was the force
that would tear the Party to pieces. He pressed her down upon the grass, among the fallen bluebells.
(Orwell, 126) They were never in love because the hate they had for Big Brother is what lead them to
commit such an act. The love and friendship people have for each other in Oceania is non existent.
The Party desperately tries to erase love for anything but Big Brother from the lives of their citizens.
In doing so, they manage to place telescreens in every house, street, and public place which is a
security camera to prevent anyone from committing an act of rebellion towards Big Brother. In
addition, there is no friendship and people are forced into serving Big Brother by a selective job. In
the novel, it states The old civilizations claimed that they were founded on love and justice. Ours is
founded upon hatred. In our world there will be no emotions except fear, rage, triumph, and self
abasement. (Orwell, 267) This reveals that in their society, people are being forced to be someone they

Over a decade ago, A 1995 Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) survey of foreign
affiliated firms in Japan (at least one third foreign ownership), found that 65.4 percent reviewed their
business as successful while just 1 percent assessed their business as unsuccessful. More than 70
percent were planning to expand their business activities over the next five years within those
successful businesses in spite of the economic crisis. The main area of expansion was sales and
marketing activities. Eighty five percent of those companies that intended to expand their Japanese
operations said sales and marketing was the primary area targeted for expansion (Banerji Sambharya,
1996). This probably reflects an understanding that in the middle of the economic difficulties, Japan s
market revolution is still creating significant opportunities. Foreign firms are coming into Japan in
record numbers. For example, huge Western superstores are coming into Japan on the tail winds of the
deregulation of large retail stores. Toys R Us had a hard time to enter Japan in 1991, but by late 1997
was posting annual sales of 100 billion yen, with 10 percent of the market. It became the leading toy
retailer in Japan. Resistance from a group of 500 small stores, which formed the Association of Toy
Specialty Stores had not been able to stop this invasion, and its membership declined to just over fifty
stores six years after Toys R Us arrived (Delios, et al. 2007).

Summary Of Stanley Milgram s 1963 Obedience Study
In Week 1, students focused on research ethics and whether (or not) social psychologist Stanley
Milgram s 1963 obedience study was ethical (Mason, 2018). Milgram organized the study because he
wanted to know how people might become strongly influenced against their personal moral and belief
structures (Mason, 2018). Roscoe argued that Milgram s 1983 disobedience study was completely
ethical because the organizer pre advised subjects as to the voluntary nature of the research and
because deception is justified within psychological research. Roscoe also declared that no Milgram
study participant experienced any negative long term psychological effect. Additionally, Roscoe
contended that all subjects were told, post study, that the administered ... Show more content on

Milgram s obedience paradigm is widely accepted to have arisen from an inclination to surrender
responsibility to authoritarian figures (Reicher, Haslam, Smith, 2012). However, this paradigm must
be held suspect because of blatant ethical considerations weakening conclusions. Fundamentally,
Milgram s was responsible for protecting his subjects. He did not protect them. He chose to use
deceptive methods, which led to short term trauma and possibly long term, according to at least one
participant. The outcome could have been far worse, with participants succumbing to heart attack or
stroke resulting from the trauma. Roscoe s arguments in support of Milgram s study being ethically
sound are not rooted in scholarly research. Therefore, further discussion will be

Hydrogen Powered Vs Electric Powered Vehicles
Hydrogen Powered Versus Electric Powered Vehicles The human race is in the midst of an energy
crisis. The gasoline used around the world is currently a non renewable resource. As the title suggests,
the gasoline will eventually be totally consumed in part by the gas guzzling vehicles common today.
For this reason, scientists have spent decades researching and developing alternative sources of fuel in
order to power daily life on Earth for many years to come. There is a wide array of renewable fuel
sources in use presently. These alternatives vary in efficiency, affordability, and many other aspects.
Hydrogen powered and electric powered vehicles are two comparable alternatives that have increased
in popularity and functionality in recent years and will continue to do so in the near future (10
Reasons, 2015).
History
Hydrogen powered vehicles initially became a reality with the invention of the first internal
combustion engine in 1806. The engine was powered by a mixture of oxygen and hydrogen gases.
This led to the first hydrogen powered car in 1908. Hydrogen powered vehicles were further advanced
in 1935 with Henry Garrett s electrolytic carburetor which allowed the cars to run on tap water. In the
1970 s, Archie Blue created and patented a new carburetor that produced enough H2 (hydrogen) gas to
power a car motor (History of Hydrogen, n.d.). Today, most commercial hydrogen vehicles use fuel
cells to power their engines. Electric powered vehicles had a slightly later

The Theme Of Abandonment In Death Of A Salesman By Willy...
Acting out the life of a secondhand salesman and a desperate housewife, Willy Loman and Amanda
Wingfield depict a never ending display of actions that prevent them from ever achieving fulfillment.
Lao Tzu is famously quoted for saying A leader is best when people barely know he exists, when his
work is done, his aim fulfilled, they will say: we did it ourselves. However, both Willy and Amanda
create an environment of deceit, abandonment, and lack of freedom proving that they are poor leaders,
burdening those around them and thus never truly achieving fulfillment.
Both Willy and Amanda are surrounded by a valley of deceit as they progress through their path to not
reaching fulfillment. The Lomans concentrate their deception inward and design ... Show more

In Death of a Salesman , Willy s lack of freedom is directly linked to his economic security and his
unachievable American Dream. Linda and Willy are confined by their own small apartment, socio
economic status, and the need for basic necessities with no way out. Willy had the freedom to make
choices, to learn from those around him and to take a chance once or twice; however, he chose to keep
making mistakes until he was so far in debt that he had no freedom to make choices. Ultimately this
play analyzes the American Dream itself and questions the validity of such an option for everyone in
the system and whether they can achieve fulfillment. Perhaps its luck, intelligence, or timing, but one
thing is for sure, Willy never had it. As for Amanda, Tom, and Laura in the Glass Menagerie , the
confinement of their small apartment, bad job, and the inability to break free leaves them lacking
fulfillment. Amanda s freedom dissolved years ago when her husband left and confined her to
thoughts of the past. Amanda s goal is to give Laura the freedom she so very much desires; however,
Laura ends up losing all freedom and confines herself in a world of glass animals. Freedom to the
main characters can come from two realizations: escape from reality, or escape from family. Either
way, there s no way for them to achieve fulfillment. Therefore, both Death of a Salesman and

Rome And Carthage In The Second Punic War
Introduction
The first things we can look at about Rome and Carthage is Rome s citizens and Carthage s wealth.
We can draw conclusions from these and begin to compare both. One of the prominent things about
Rome was its hand to hand combat skills of its soldiers. Rome was not originally a navy, but had to
become a naval power to take on Carthage. Before Rome ever faced Hannibal in the second Punic war
(B.C.218 201) it faced Carthage in the first Punic war (B.C. 264 241) and had fewer losses than it did
in the Second Punic war. We can examine what Carthage s advantages were, and what Rome s
disadvantages were (Morey, 1901).
I
Rome had to build a navy to be equal to Carthage in the First Punic war (B.C. 264 241). There was an
event that Carthage was using the sea to make its business with other cities. Rome was not a naval
power like Carthage. Rome did not have that access to the sea that would guarantee supremacy. That s
why the Romans decided not to surrender to the circumstances so they could pursue Carthage and
make an impact on its sea business ventures. Carthage was the world s first naval power, according to
(Morey,1901) and Rome was its rival. Rome ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Rome was good at making comebacks. Carthage was good at staying in the lead. They both were
respected by other cities. They could both use the cities to their advantage. Why would they not want
to face off as they were threatening to one another? I believe it was Rome who was threatened by
Carthage especially. (Morey,1901) Declares that Rome was alarmed as she saw Carthage s territory
extending north, Rome s rival . Most importantly, it was the conquests of the Carthaginians that made
Rome stay on track and keep pace with them. They wanted what Carthage was doing. Carthage was
conquering. Carthage was becoming greater. Rome decided to pursue their victories over Carthage the
only way it could in the First Punic wars (B.C.

What Is Beowulf A Heroic Archetype
The notion of heroes is one that transcends time and space. Examples of heroes appear in almost every
culture and time period since humans first started writing. Even the very first piece of literature
written in the English language, Beowulf, is a classic example of a heroic archetype. We can also see
examples of heroes in today s culture, such as in Bonnie Tyler s song Holding Out For a Hero and in
Tina Turner s We Don t Need Another Hero . Additionally, we make predictions of what we think
heroes may be like in the future, like in the movie Mad Max: Beyond the Thunderdome. Since heroes
appear in every culture, it s easy to see how important they are to society. What s harder to see is how
important society is to heroes. Societies put ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

out there/ Love and compassion, their day is coming/All else are castles built in the air/ And I wonder
when we are ever gonna change/ Living under the fear until nothing else remains. This quote hints that
there may have been a previous hero that let down this society. This is seen when she mentions
something to rely on, insinuating that they previously put their faith in something unreliable and since
the entirety of the song is about not needing heroes, it is a logical jump to assume that something was
a person. This quote also hints that love and compassion may be more important than heroes and that
without these qualities society will destroy itself. This is an interesting counterpoint to the entire
concept of having heroes in the first place and has a solid foundation in reality. However, it does not
address how the push for a love and compassion society would affect the hero society that is present in

The political establishment during the Second Reich in Germany were successful in maintaining the
political status quo between the years 1871 and 1918. It can be argued however, that they were
successful in doing so through more than just a policy of moderate reform. During these years,
Germany abided by a rigid constitution which allowed power to ultimately be firmly held in the hands
of the Kaiser. A great sense of nationalism and patriotism also existed in Germany and the vast

sharp rise of votes in the 1903 general election. This may suggest that moderate reform was never the
mechanism to keep power in the hands of the old elites or maintain the status quo. However, the threat
of Socialism was undoubtedly overestimated by the political establishment who were under the
misconception that the Socialist movement was wholly revolutionary. It may therefore be argued that
since the threat of the socialists was smaller than perceived, it was in fact the existing structures of the
Kaiserreich that maintained the political status quo.
It could be argued that under Bulow s chancellorship, the fact that he carried such an interest and
passion in foreign policy, allowed stability to remain as policies such as Weltpolitik and
Sammlungspolitik helped to reduce conflicting interests on the domestic front. However, Bulow was
confronted with the difficulty of financing Weltpolitik as the government had been in deficit since
1900. Bulow s proposition to raise indirect taxes and introduce an inheritance tax created immediate
opposition. Bulow proceeded to form

Imperialism In Kenya
Kenya is a nation in Africa that was created by the British. The effects of the colonial era are prevalent
as they have changed in many aspects. Kenya was apart of the British Commonwealth in Africa. As
missionaries and settlers came to Kenya after the Berlin Conference which divided Africa into
colonies without their consent, they became a British controlled colony. Britain already had colonies
in India, Canada, and Australia; but wanted the rich natural resources of Africa. The occupation of
Britain in Kenya affected the country in many aspects but still withheld tradition. British colonialism
affected the nation of Kenya in an upsurge in population, a corrupt restrictive government, and a
drastic change in culture and beliefs. Kenya ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The native people were confused on the input of British government causing them to join the British
Commonwealth. The nation hadn t any say in the actions of the government because the native people
were not allowed in the government: This we know. But in spite of this, what I have told you is a fact.
You have now a king a good and great king who loves his people, and you are among his people. In
the town called Nairobi is a council or government that acts as a king. And his laws are your laws
(Document D). The force of the government grew so that the lower end of the social ranking system
couldn t fix their corrupt government. An unfixable government came up with a solution. In 1923
when the Devonshire Declaration was made, it stated the native peoples of Africa were the priority
opinion over Europeans, native councils were created so that they could voice could be in the
parliamentary decisions (The Commonwealth, Kenya: History). The Kenyan government took a turn
into becoming an independent nation. The authority of the citizens grew and held elections for a new
president under the people of Kenya instead of the British. The KANU political party had ended the
colonial era: Jomo Kenyatta s party, the Kenyan African National Union (KANU), won with the
slogan Uhra na Kenyatta Independence with Kenyatta and against the protests of colonialists,
Kenyatta was released from jail. Jomo Kenyatta was elected the president of an independent Kenya,

Why Sales And Per Capita
Per Capita and sales would be easily related as Per Capita would be based upon each person s salary.
If an individual s salary is increased it would, in turn, make it more feasible for said person to be able
to make extra purchases that they previously wouldn t. This would explain why sales and Per Capita
are positively related. Many variables would play a role in the sales decision as well.
Variables
Numerous variables are to be considered when making a large purchase. Some of those variables
would include competitor advertising, competitor dealer discounts, introductions of new competitive
models. Other variables that would be considered would be the age and gender of the purchaser, also
traits and characteristics of the purchaser ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Dependent Variables. Dependent variables are dependent upon the independent variable and would be
likely to change as the independent variable changes. With age changing a person s wants or needs
would also change. A person that is young and single would most likely not come to a car lot to
purchase a minivan whereas a person that has begun a family would consider this purchase. A teenager
that has just received their license is most likely not going to purchase a large family vehicle as well.
Mattingly mentions that dependent variables are akin to phenomena; selection of dependent variables,
therefore, should be based on the phenomenon of interest rather than some context (Dependent
Variables, p. 237). Thus saying that dependent variables should be based on occurrences or facts that
are of interest to the researcher, rather than just as a method of research.
Moderating Variables. Moderating variables are another form of independent variables. These
variables will have a significant effect on the independent variables and the dependent variables
relationship (Cooper Schindler. p. 56). Moderating variables would include the variables such as
competitors advertising, competitive dealer discounts, and the introduction of new competitive
models. These variables are outside the control of the original automobile manufacturer, but using
these variables would most definitely have an effect on the relationship in the independent and
dependent variables.

The Era Of George Washington
In today s military we think of tactics and strategy in quite a different manner than in the time of
Washington. During his time strategy and tactics were not known by the name in fact the term did not
even exist, but they were know by thoughts, processes, and rules that were passed down through
generations in which leadership waged war. Until the nineteenth century, war was the sport of kings,
and strategy the rules of the game. (Palmer, 2012, p.3) As we look into the era of George Washington
we can see three general aspects of warfare that were used. The first being tactics which we can
describe as being the theory of the use of military forces in combat (Palmer, 2012, p. 6) or generally
speaking how we fight our enemy. This how we fight aspect goes into the basic make up and use of
forces, such as we are going to use our light infantry to suppress the forward progress of our enemy
while our cavalry uses there speed advantage to flank around the enemy and begin an aggressive
assault. Another war aspect we see in this time period is strategy. Strategy is very similar to tactics but
it instead looks more into where and whether we should fight to gain a victory (Palmer, 2012, p. 6 7).
The aspect of strategy also looks into numbers, in which we can say we are going up against a force
that is estimated to be in the range of seven thousand militia and two thousand cavalry units, because
of this we should attack them further back into the wood line where we have the greater

Sexism Essay
An everlasting Conflict
Sexism is categorized by extreme cases, but when in reality, both female and male parties execute
sexism everyday even in the simplest forms. Though women tend to receive more grieve when it
comes to sexist acts or sexist slurs made by men, the level of sexist disputes has decreases drastically
with time. The play Trifles displays the major difference is the mindset of the split sexes. The setting
presents a time when women were belittled and not taken seriously. Susan Glaspell s play is evidence
on the progress our society has made concerning sexism, never less the ever existing conflict still

Yes, women s bodies are used to sell products, or portray a perfect image of how men want their
women, but women must voluntarily advertize their own bodies. Some females may considered sexy
or racy photos and commercials to be degrading, but those women choosing to do so can find it very
empowering. They not only feel confident but they are becoming something that men swoon over and
yearn for; ergo creating a sense of authority. Sexism runs rampant in every facet of our society.
The story of Trifles exposes the sexism that women dealt with then, and still to some extent deal with
today. The men show major examples of diminishing and downplaying the women s intelligence when
ignoring them throughout examining the crime scene. Mrs. Peters and Mrs. Hale find incriminating
evidence against Minnie, but the men never think to ask them their opinion; they are too preoccupied
searching for solid tangible, evidence. Although the women find evidence to believe Minnie is the
killer, I believe they feel somewhat responsible for her. This concluding that both genders are
somewhat sexist. The men on the husband s side, and the women on Minnie s side. Perception differs
with their gender. While the men look for something to show anger, or sudden feeling , something
more obvious; the messy kitchen is labeled as bad housekeeping, instead of being used as evidence.
The clues are presented but their male perception enables the men from seeing them. (Glaspell s)

The Pros And Cons Of Endangered Elephants
Trump s lift on the ban of endangered elephant trophy imports into the U.S. is just another prime
example of how politics and money take precedence over precious life and the environment.
Fortunately, the new policy that Trump is considering is on hold. According to Tanya Sernerib, Center
for Biological Diversity Attorney, we are in the midst of a poaching crisis. Elephant populations across
Africa are declining , she said in an interview with WCCO CBS Minnesota in November 2017. It was

Certainly, elephant trophies pose an environmental issue because elephants provide many benefits to
the environment. Two brief examples are making grasslands and water holes. Political Ecologists will
probably find that those who could afford to lobby politically in favor of the elephant trophy U.S.

environment, such as animal rights groups and conservation organizations, that are in objection to the

How Is Napoleon Similar To Joseph Stalin In Animal Farm
In Animal Farm many of the characters can be related back into everyday life around the world. This
is due to the fact that Ian Wooldridge creates the characters to represent dictators around the world. In
Animal Farm You can see that Ian Wooldridge relates the characters to dictators by two of the main
characters being Napoleon to Joseph Stalin and Leon Trotsky.
Joseph Stalin was the dictator and leader of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). Between
the years of 1929 1953 the USSR became a global military heavyweight underneath the control of
Stalin. He used his power and ruled by terror he did not care about the people of the USSR as many of
his innocent sullivans died during his power and time as leader.

There are many points that can confirm this. Including that in the USSR and Animal Farm they are
both duel leaders as Stalin has Trotsky, and Napoleon has Snowball. Each Stalin and Napoleon have
defenders and protectors of some type of to enforce their power in Animal Farm Napoleon has the
guard dogs and Stalin has the secret police force.
Leon Trotsky was a communist theorist and activist he was in charge of the Russian October
Revolution. He was the officer for foreign affairs under Lenin, but he resigned after conflicting with
Lenin s believes. He then come to be the red army leader and led to victory in the Russian Civil War.
After Lenin s death, he has a lack of allies to support him while Stalin has many to support from
several people. He was banished from the Soviet Union after losing in a struggle against Stalin and he
was murdered under Stalin s directions.
Ian Wooldridge introduces us to Snowball when the other pigs decide to spread Old Major s message
throughout the farm. He s a more vicious pig than Napoleon, he is much smarter he can speak more
fluently and write, whereas napoleon cannot. He was not considered to have the same impact of
character. The animals were fooled by Snowball s appearance because he s friendly and lively, they

Fundamentals of Oral Communications Fall 2017

Introduction
When most of us think about communication, many of us immediately imagine ourselves talking to
someone or writing them a message. Most of us do not actively think about the equally or more likely,
much more important nonverbal cues that are very much a part of how people perceive our chosen
messages. The main types of nonverbal communication cues that I focused on while I was observing
my subjects were:
Kinesics, the gestures we make or how we move about when we are communicating.
Haptics, the way we interpret things physically.

The woman, her mostly gray blonde hair freshly styled and worm to just below her shoulders, wore a

Shortly after resigning from his employment, Horne and his wife set up a similar company to GM.
Horne solicited with GM s customers through the newly incorporated company. The Court of Appeal
(UK) stated that the new company was a mere cloak or sham used by Horne to breach his contractual
obligation. Similarly, it can be shown that F had a contractual obligation to its employees to pay a
certain wage and provide certain entitlements in return for the standard of work provided by the pilots.
The existence of legal obligation is demonstrated by F having to request the pilots to voluntarily take a
reduction in pay and the pilots refusing. Since the pilots provide the same standard of work for J and
through lifting the corporate veil, F and J are determined to be one and thus the pilots may be entitled
to their previous remuneration. Creasey v Breachwood Motors Ltd is another example where
restructuring was used to avoid a legal obligation. Creasey was employed by Breachwood Welwyn
Ltd and was also a creditor. Breachwood Welwyn transferred all of its assets to Breachwood Motors
Ltd, which they controlled, to avoid having to repay Creasey. The court held that one of the key
reasons for the restructure was to avoid legal obligations to pay its employee legal entitlements. The
corporate veil was lifted and it was held that Breachwood Motors Ltd would be liable for the debt
payable to Creasey. This precedent further supports the application of Gildford

Interior Design
Profile Essay: Interior Design Interior design is a popular career for many people. That is especially
those who are creative and who have a high number of ideas about how they would change a room or
a whole home to look completely different. There are many different projects that are involved with
interior design and they are all separate but related to one another. The people who conduct the
projects are called interior designers. Development is the first phase of interior design (Pile, 2003).
Then the designer has to talk with everyone involved in the project and make sure each person knows
what his or her job is and how much everything should cost. How long the job is going to take is also
important, and the homeowner or business owner needs to know that. Then the work can get started
and everyone can work together to make the house or business look just the way the owner wants.
Every owner has a different idea of how he or she wants a place to look when it is all done. If the
interior designer does not agree with the way the owner wants it to look, and the two cannot agree, the
owner needs to find a new designer that he or she can trust and work with on the project (Pile, 2003).
Getting along with a designer is really important. If you have an interior designer (or you are an
interior designer) and you do not get along well with others, you could end up not getting things done
properly in a house or a business. Originally, there was no interior design as a

Reflection Paper On Batman V. Superman
On March 24th, I watched Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice with a crowd of people excited to see
the two best superheroes go head to head. What we got was a jumbled mess of garbage for 2 1/2

why directors think the best action scenes are done while it s night time and raining is the best time,
but this was another occurrence of It s dark and the camera is shaking a lot.
So, I wrote a review of the movie that wasn t too positive about the movie, but I still wanted to see it

being bad, but I had to cover my mouth from laughter so many times that I was afraid I was going to

Voter Suppression In America
Voter suppression happens everywhere around the world. As an immigrant this topic seemed so
interesting because I always thought of voter suppression as something that may just happen in a third
world country. In a dictatorship country government is not afraid to let the nation know that although
there is a voting but ultimately they are the ones who decide the fate of everyone. After watching the
videos and reading the assignments I realized that voter suppression/fraud can happen in many shapes
and forms. It could be done without any physical violence or any obvious act but it still can do the
same amount of damage to a nation. Voter suppression in a nation like America that is supposedly one
the freest countries politically has to happen a lot smoother and a lot less obvious that one in a
dictatorship kind of government.
Voter suppression refers to a situation in which the votes are being manipulated, not by direct
involvement of the votes and numbers but by manipulating the voters into voting for the other party or
even holding them away from voting. It can be done in different ways and techniques. There has been

As Australian architects were often inspired by international designs many houses were decorative
thus there was the emergence of the Californian Bungalow within the 1920s. This housing structure

the fact that Australian designs were not as independent as it is today the Californian Bungalow was
mainly influenced from the American Californian Bungalows. The bungalows in Australia was an
approved style for a suburban house as a result of its simplistic building methods such as staining
timbers, creating a pale plaster surface and applying decorative textures on plywood (Cuffley, 2007).

Baking Soda Vs Double Acting Powder
Have you ever wondered why certain recipes called for baking powder and not baking soda or vice
versa? Well the reasoning behind using one over the other has to do with their chemical make up.
There are different reactions needed for different recipes. Baking soda and baking powder are both
used as leavening agents. So let s take a look at baking soda. Baking soda s chemical name is sodium
hydrogen carbonate. It also goes by Sodium bicarbonate. Baking Soda has a white, powder like
consistency. It is low on the pH scale making it a very weak base. Baking soda has many uses other
than baking. It can be used as a whitener or as a deodorizer. It can also neutralize both acids and bases

The cream of tartar is used for its acidity. There are two types of baking soda you can use: Single
acting powder and Double acting powder. Single acting powder reacts with moisture. As soon as you
add moisture to the mix that includes a single

different ways of releasing gas. When mixing with a double acting powder, some of the gas is released
into the air while it is at room temperature. Most of the gas released, however, will be released in the
oven while the temperature rises. Determining which ingredient, baking powder or baking soda, to use
depends on the other ingredients within the recipe. The whole point cooking is to make food that you
thoroughly enjoy eating because of the taste. Baking soda has a bitter taste. This bitter taste can be
leveled out using the acidity of another ingredient, such as buttermilk. Baking soda is often found
when baking cookies. Baking powder is neutral. It is neutral because it contains both and acid and a
base. Since it is neutral, it can be used with other neutral tastes such as milk. You will commonly find

on January 12, 2010 a 7.0 magnitude hit Haiti. Haiti had not seen a major earthquake like this in
almost 200 years. People scrambled through the streets as the ground roared knocking down huge
stone and brick building onto the streets of Port au Prince. An eyewitness describes the moment that
the earthquake hit, The earth screamed; a sound of thunder that came from its belly as it violently

residents of the rural neighborhood (Clesca, 2010). This would be one of the deadliest earthquake of
our generation. The estimated death toll was 316,000 deaths, and over 3 million people were displaced
by the earthquake. Many people died when their dwelling collapsed and they were trapped under the
rumble. People also died from falling objects, such as large building materials. This earthquake will

The question at the center of this article is whether or not children between 5 and 6 years of age (in
comparison to adults and children between 10 and 11 years of age) consider race to be a stable over
time. This concept is important in understanding both the change in cognitive development of children
as well as the significances of difference in social groups as a factor in understanding race. This
controlled experimental study used white children ages 10 11, white children ages 5 6, white adults,

within each of the four tested groups, the participants themselves could have been selected from
various socioeconomic groups (white children ages 5 6 from different socioeconomic backgrounds,
children ages 5 6 of a racial minority from different socioeconomic backgrounds, etc...). The
experiment shows an implication that although there is a cognitive component with developing the
understanding that race is stable, there is a great social component that is presented by the difference
between the two 5 6 year old groups. Is it because children of a racial minority may be more likely to
be educated by their parents on the concept of race? Is there also a socio economic component to this
understanding. The article stated that the participants were recruited from the same region though a
region is ambiguous. It would be interesting to see diversity of socio economic backgrounds within
each of the groups (of course, new groups would need to be created in order to test for a socio
economic factor). Does the socio economic background of a child from each of the groups affect their
understanding of race in comparison between groups and/or within the group members? In addition, it

College Is A Waste Of Time And Money
The amount of money spent on one year alone of college can break someone s heart. For most people
college gets them to where they want to be, but with hard work and dedication going to work right
after high school can take you a long way. Getting out of high school and starting a career early might
be what some people want, but college is always an option with all the help they have today. College
is a waste of time and money for a couple reasons. The fact that you spend 13 years in school just to
go on to most likely spend four more years at some sort of college makes some kids think when it
comes to should I go to college or not. Some kids believe that you can make more money working
right after high school then heading to college for four years. Statistics say in College is a Waste of

Gender Stereotypes About Mothers In The Work Force
assumptions about mothers in the work force which in most cases results in a pay gap for that woman.
Correll identifies a variety of factors that could help explain the motherhood wage gap. The factors
include but aren t limited to, reduced investment in human capital by mothers, lower work effort by
mothers compared with nonmothers, unobserved heterogeneity between mothers and nonmothers, and
discrimination against mothers by employers (Correll 1299). All these things contribute to the gender
wage gap. Women in the work place already have to prove themselves in comparison to men, the
element of being a mother creates another obstacle for women who are mothers. This also places a

Prescription Drug Abuse And Prescription Drugs
Prescription Drug Abuse Prescription Drug Abuse has increased in an alarming rate over recent years!
Prescription drug related deaths now outnumber those from heroin and cocaine combined. The abuse
in prescription drugs in America goes back more than a hundred years ago. Prescription drug abuse is
the use of a medication without a prescription, in a way other than prescribed, or for the experience or
feelings elicited. Although prescription medications are intended to help individuals, they can
sometimes become addictive and can induce serious side effects, changes in behavior, and even death.
From personal experience I know how dangerous Prescription Drug Abuse can be. When I was
younger, my brother Clay overdosed on Prescription Drugs. He went to a pharm party, also known as
a pill party. He was found passed out in a bedroom, and was put in a car and taken to the hospital. He
was then found to have no heartbeat and they had to cut off his clothes and had to do the difibulizer.
He is now in rehab doing much better. Everyday in the United States 2,500 youth abuse a prescription
pain reliever for the first time. Prescription drug abuse, while most prevalent in the U.S., is a problem
in many areas around the world including Europe, Southern Africa, and Freesmeier 2
South Asia. In the United States alone, more than fifteen million people abuse prescription drugs,
more than the combined number who reported abusing cocaine, hallucinogens, inhalants, and

  • 2. Mating Among Seahorse Research Paper Mating among Seahorses by Tina Huang February 12, 2015 Organisms have participated in mating in order to pass their offspring into another generation. Mating refers to when animals court and breed each other, an act of reproduction. Male pregnancy is the norm for seahorses, becoming a part of behavioral evolution. Male parental care has led to the broad diversity of seahorses or sympatric speciation. Seahorses use assortative mating, also known as choosing mates based on their body size. The dependency of this type of mating was a consequence of the monogamous mating system and lifestyle of seahorses. Monogamous pairing is when marriage is to one entity at a time, compared to bigamy or polygamy. The demonstrated adaptative differences such as size in the same habitat proves the occurrence of sympatric divergence. Is that the only factor that influences the rise of new seahorse species? In this paper, I will examine five studies, from vast areas relating to the mating of seahorses and their patterns of mating behavior, illustrating its role in sympatric speciation. Altogether these studies demonstrate the uniqueness of seahorses and provide a new outlook on the diversity that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 5. Public Rituals In Renaissance Florence Essay Public ritual in Renaissance Florence involved many actors and took many forms. They could be civic rituals performed by the citizens of the city, or popular rituals where anyone could participate. They could also originate in the private sphere and were made available to the public. Public rituals had various purposes, but most importantly they reproduced hierarchies which conditioned the organisation of power within the Florentine polity, and ensured civil peace and harmony. This was particularly important in Renaissance Florence as no one monarch ruled the city, and therefore no singular figure embodying authority and morality could be looked up to by the people. Keeping law and order was the ruling class major concern, and public rituals ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The portrait of Giuliano de Medici by Raphael, a tempera and oil on canvas, can be dated back to around 1515 (Fig. 2). The portrait includes a background depiction of Florence, which is revealed behind a green curtain. As part of a marriage arrangement with Philiberte of Savoy, it is not surprising that Florence would be depicted as an asset of Giuliano s. However, the picture was painted shortly after the carnival of 1513, and it highlights the sort of relationship that the Medici family wanted to re establish with the city and its people, using public rituals to achieve this. Giuliano s gaze is directed to the part of the curtain revealing the city, thus asserting his status as legimate ruler, watching over the people of Florence. This painting and the carnival of 1513 convey similar messages. When Girolamo Macchietti executed a portrait of Lorenzo the Magnificent, he used a similar device (Fig. 3). Lorenzo stands tall with Florence in the background, and he looks forward benevolently. What the Medicis attempted to achieve with public rituals, they successfully managed to reflect in their portraiture. With their backs turned to the city, they would have appeared to contemporaries as larger than life leaders protecting Florence s interests and history. The link between the two portraits is interesting because the carnival of 1513 was a clear attempt at ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Our parents lived during a time without cell phones or televisions in their homes, their connection to the media was through books, magazines, newspapers, and the radio. As a twenty year old in 2016, I ve always had a television, computer, and cell phone in my home, so my connection to the media was though what was on television, movies, video games, music, and many different things on the internet. Growing up I spent a lot of time playing outside and technology wasn t something that had to be limited because it wasn t a problem until I was a teenager. Now days it s rare to come across a child who doesn t have their own iPad, old smartphone, or a cell phone that is in service. • 8. Essay on The Ambiguity in Hawthorne s Young Goodman Brown The Ambiguity in Young Goodman Brown The literary critics agree that there is considerable ambiguity in Nathaniel Hawthorne s Young Goodman Brown. This essay intends to illustrate the previous statement and to analyze the cause of this ambiguity. Henry James in Hawthorne, when discussing Young Goodman Brown comments on how imaginative it is, then mentions how allegorical Hawthorne is, and how allegory should be expressed clearly: I frankly confess that I have, as a general thing, but little enjoyment of it, and that it has never seemed to me to be, as it were, a first rate literary form. . . . But it is apt to spoil two good things a story and a moral, a meaning and a form; and the taste for it is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Ambivalence, or the simultaneous and contradictory attitude and/or feelings toward an object, etc., may well be the cause of the extreme ambiguity, doubt, uncertainty in the mind of the reader of Young Goodman Brown. Intentional ambivalence on the part of the author in order not to offend too many is a plausible explanation, as I would see things. Terence Martin in Nathaniel Hawthorne expresses what I interpret as a possible source for the ambiguity in Young Goodman Brown : Assumed in the tale is a radical distinction between dream life and real life; the question proposed to Goodman Brown is into which of these categories good and evil naturally belong. At the outset of the story, Faith asks her husband to postpone his journey until sunrise and sleepin his own bed that night. . . . Mulling over the guilty purpose that has brought him into the forest, Goodman Brown recalls Faith s talk of dreams. . . . In the forest he goes through a dreamlike experience. . . . The devil, furthermore, introduces a further notion of a dream. . . . Thus the counterpoised terms, dream and relity, are shown to depend for their application upon a prior attitude toward the moral nature of the world. For the devil, virtue is a dream; evil, the only reality(91). It would seem that Martin s analysis ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Love And Hate In George Orwell s 1984 Without love we tend to grow a sense of hatred within ourselves and for each other. In the novel, 1984, Big Brother is portrayed as the leader in society, symbolizing a god like figure who has total dominance over their citizens. Therefore, the people find themselves full of hate considering their government is controlling them. George Orwell s message in 1984 claims that a society based on hate would not survive seeing that the people would be the cause of their own destruction. The story 1984 focuses on a man named Winston Smith, who lives in Oceania, an imaginative country, ruled by the Party through a totalitarianism government. In their world, people are divided by three social groups such as the Inner Party, the Outer Party, and the Proles. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the story, the Party uses the power of hate to take advantage of the people into loving Big Brother. For example, the point when Winston and Julia had a love affair with each other, was not only for lust but also to rebel against their government. With regard to their love affair the novel states Not merely the love of one person, but the animal instinct , the simple undifferentiated desire: the was the force that would tear the Party to pieces. He pressed her down upon the grass, among the fallen bluebells. (Orwell, 126) They were never in love because the hate they had for Big Brother is what lead them to commit such an act. The love and friendship people have for each other in Oceania is non existent. The Party desperately tries to erase love for anything but Big Brother from the lives of their citizens. In doing so, they manage to place telescreens in every house, street, and public place which is a security camera to prevent anyone from committing an act of rebellion towards Big Brother. In addition, there is no friendship and people are forced into serving Big Brother by a selective job. In the novel, it states The old civilizations claimed that they were founded on love and justice. Ours is founded upon hatred. In our world there will be no emotions except fear, rage, triumph, and self abasement. (Orwell, 267) This reveals that in their society, people are being forced to be someone they re ... It is our argument that the forces of change that led originally to new and bigger opportunities remain the same, despite surface differences. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Over a decade ago, A 1995 Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) survey of foreign affiliated firms in Japan (at least one third foreign ownership), found that 65.4 percent reviewed their business as successful while just 1 percent assessed their business as unsuccessful. More than 70 percent were planning to expand their business activities over the next five years within those successful businesses in spite of the economic crisis. The main area of expansion was sales and marketing activities. Eighty five percent of those companies that intended to expand their Japanese operations said sales and marketing was the primary area targeted for expansion (Banerji Sambharya, 1996). This probably reflects an understanding that in the middle of the economic difficulties, Japan s market revolution is still creating significant opportunities. Foreign firms are coming into Japan in record numbers. For example, huge Western superstores are coming into Japan on the tail winds of the deregulation of large retail stores. Toys R Us had a hard time to enter Japan in 1991, but by late 1997 was posting annual sales of 100 billion yen, with 10 percent of the market. It became the leading toy retailer in Japan. Resistance from a group of 500 small stores, which formed the Association of Toy Specialty Stores had not been able to stop this invasion, and its membership declined to just over fifty stores six years after Toys R Us arrived (Delios, et al. 2007). ... • 12. Hydrogen Powered Vs Electric Powered Vehicles Hydrogen Powered Versus Electric Powered Vehicles The human race is in the midst of an energy crisis. The gasoline used around the world is currently a non renewable resource. As the title suggests, the gasoline will eventually be totally consumed in part by the gas guzzling vehicles common today. For this reason, scientists have spent decades researching and developing alternative sources of fuel in order to power daily life on Earth for many years to come. There is a wide array of renewable fuel sources in use presently. These alternatives vary in efficiency, affordability, and many other aspects. Hydrogen powered and electric powered vehicles are two comparable alternatives that have increased in popularity and functionality in recent years and will continue to do so in the near future (10 Reasons, 2015). History Hydrogen powered vehicles initially became a reality with the invention of the first internal combustion engine in 1806. The engine was powered by a mixture of oxygen and hydrogen gases. This led to the first hydrogen powered car in 1908. Hydrogen powered vehicles were further advanced in 1935 with Henry Garrett s electrolytic carburetor which allowed the cars to run on tap water. In the 1970 s, Archie Blue created and patented a new carburetor that produced enough H2 (hydrogen) gas to power a car motor (History of Hydrogen, n.d.). Today, most commercial hydrogen vehicles use fuel cells to power their engines. Electric powered vehicles had a slightly later ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. The Theme Of Abandonment In Death Of A Salesman By Willy... Acting out the life of a secondhand salesman and a desperate housewife, Willy Loman and Amanda Wingfield depict a never ending display of actions that prevent them from ever achieving fulfillment. Lao Tzu is famously quoted for saying A leader is best when people barely know he exists, when his work is done, his aim fulfilled, they will say: we did it ourselves. However, both Willy and Amanda create an environment of deceit, abandonment, and lack of freedom proving that they are poor leaders, burdening those around them and thus never truly achieving fulfillment. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Death of a Salesman , Willy s lack of freedom is directly linked to his economic security and his unachievable American Dream. Linda and Willy are confined by their own small apartment, socio economic status, and the need for basic necessities with no way out. Willy had the freedom to make choices, to learn from those around him and to take a chance once or twice; however, he chose to keep making mistakes until he was so far in debt that he had no freedom to make choices. Ultimately this play analyzes the American Dream itself and questions the validity of such an option for everyone in the system and whether they can achieve fulfillment. Perhaps its luck, intelligence, or timing, but one thing is for sure, Willy never had it. As for Amanda, Tom, and Laura in the Glass Menagerie , the confinement of their small apartment, bad job, and the inability to break free leaves them lacking fulfillment. Amanda s freedom dissolved years ago when her husband left and confined her to thoughts of the past. Amanda s goal is to give Laura the freedom she so very much desires; however, Laura ends up losing all freedom and confines herself in a world of glass animals. • 15. Rome And Carthage In The Second Punic War Introduction The first things we can look at about Rome and Carthage is Rome s citizens and Carthage s wealth. We can draw conclusions from these and begin to compare both. One of the prominent things about Rome was its hand to hand combat skills of its soldiers. Rome was not originally a navy, but had to become a naval power to take on Carthage. Before Rome ever faced Hannibal in the second Punic war (B.C.218 201) it faced Carthage in the first Punic war (B.C. 264 241) and had fewer losses than it did in the Second Punic war. We can examine what Carthage s advantages were, and what Rome s disadvantages were (Morey, 1901). I Rome had to build a navy to be equal to Carthage in the First Punic war (B.C. 264 241). There was an event that Carthage was using the sea to make its business with other cities. Rome was not a naval power like Carthage. Rome did not have that access to the sea that would guarantee supremacy. Examples of heroes appear in almost every culture and time period since humans first started writing. We can also see examples of heroes in today s culture, such as in Bonnie Tyler s song Holding Out For a Hero and in Tina Turner s We Don t Need Another Hero . Additionally, we make predictions of what we think heroes may be like in the future, like in the movie Mad Max: Beyond the Thunderdome. How far do you agree with this statement? The political establishment during the Second Reich in Germany were successful in maintaining the political status quo between the years 1871 and 1918. It can be argued however, that they were successful in doing so through more than just a policy of moderate reform. This can be seen in the sharp rise of votes in the 1903 general election. This may suggest that moderate reform was never the mechanism to keep power in the hands of the old elites or maintain the status quo. It may therefore be argued that since the threat of the socialists was smaller than perceived, it was in fact the existing structures of the Kaiserreich that maintained the political status quo. It could be argued that under Bulow s chancellorship, the fact that he carried such an interest and passion in foreign policy, allowed stability to remain as policies such as Weltpolitik and Sammlungspolitik helped to reduce conflicting interests on the domestic front. Until the nineteenth century, war was the sport of kings, and strategy the rules of the game. (Palmer, 2012, p.3) As we look into the era of George Washington we can see three general aspects of warfare that were used. The first being tactics which we can describe as being the theory of the use of military forces in combat (Palmer, 2012, p. 6) or generally speaking how we fight our enemy. This how we fight aspect goes into the basic make up and use of forces, such as we are going to use our light infantry to suppress the forward progress of our enemy while our cavalry uses there speed advantage to flank around the enemy and begin an aggressive assault. Another war aspect we see in this time period is strategy. Strategy is very similar to tactics but it instead looks more into where and whether we should fight to gain a victory (Palmer, 2012, p. 6 7). If the interior designer does not agree with the way the owner wants it to look, and the two cannot agree, the owner needs to find a new designer that he or she can trust and work with on the project (Pile, 2003). Getting along with a designer is really important. If you have an interior designer (or you are an interior designer) and you do not get along well with others, you could end up not getting things done properly in a house or a business. • 30. Reflection Paper On Batman V. Superman On March 24th, I watched Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice with a crowd of people excited to see the two best superheroes go head to head. What we got was a jumbled mess of garbage for 2 1/2 hours. Was the action of them fighting good? Yeah, it was okay, but it was far from good. I m not sure why directors think the best action scenes are done while it s night time and raining is the best time, but this was another occurrence of It s dark and the camera is shaking a lot. So, I wrote a review of the movie that wasn t too positive about the movie, but I still wanted to see it again to make sure it was as bad as my first impression gave me. Not only was I right about the movie being bad, but I had to cover my mouth from laughter so many times that I was afraid I was going to be kicked out of the theater. I took notes during my first viewing so that I could recollect the movie as a whole, but my second viewing was pretty much writing down why it wasn t good. Let s take a look. This Superman mopes around, only helps when Lois is in trouble, lets people die because of her, and is basically no better than a fireman who was called to a fire. In Superman Returns, Superman is also comforting. He saves a plane, opens the door, and then he asks if everyone is alright. Everyone looked at him and felt like he was a comfort blanket draped over you when you were in shock. Superman in this movie is just a supercut of him saving stuff with no context. • 31. Voter Suppression In America Voter suppression happens everywhere around the world. As an immigrant this topic seemed so interesting because I always thought of voter suppression as something that may just happen in a third world country. In a dictatorship country government is not afraid to let the nation know that although there is a voting but ultimately they are the ones who decide the fate of everyone. After watching the videos and reading the assignments I realized that voter suppression/fraud can happen in many shapes and forms. It could be done without any physical violence or any obvious act but it still can do the same amount of damage to a nation. Voter suppression in a nation like America that is supposedly one the freest countries politically has to happen a lot smoother and a lot less obvious that one in a dictatorship kind of government. Voter suppression refers to a situation in which the votes are being manipulated, not by direct involvement of the votes and numbers but by manipulating the voters into voting for the other party or even holding them away from voting. It can be done in different ways and techniques. There has been a lot of cases of voter ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They say that putting that amount of pressure on the citizens to prove that their own legitimacy is pushing them away from voting. on the other hand, republicans believe that just because voter fraud does not happen too often, it does not mean that it should not be prevented and ... • 32. Ravensong by Lee Maracle Many times when reading a novel, the reader connects with one of the characters and begins to sympathize with them. This could be because the reader understands what the character is going through or because we get to see things from the character s perspective and their emotions and that in return allows a bond to form for the reader. The character that is the most intriguing for me and the one I found comparing to every book that I read during school was Stacey from the book Ravensong Lee Maracle. The character Stacey goes through a lot of internal battle with herself and it s on her path to discovery that she begins to understand herself and what she s capable of. Throughout the novel, Stacey has a few issues she tries to work ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It s like they ve been tied together by a thick string of steel. Let me explain, today I received a letter from Macbeth stating that he was approached by witches, he referred to them as the weird sisters , and he said that they saw unimaginable things stored in the future for Macbeth. They told him that he would become king of Scotland...King of Scotland! Do you have any idea how amazing that would be for the both of us?! Imagine: my husband, a king. Australian Bungalow In The 1920 s As Australian architects were often inspired by international designs many houses were decorative thus there was the emergence of the Californian Bungalow within the 1920s. This housing structure began during the early nineteen twenties which became a leading fashion (Boyd, 1962, p.70). Due to the fact that Australian designs were not as independent as it is today the Californian Bungalow was mainly influenced from the American Californian Bungalows. The bungalows in Australia was an approved style for a suburban house as a result of its simplistic building methods such as staining timbers, creating a pale plaster surface and applying decorative textures on plywood (Cuffley, 2007). • 35. Baking Soda Vs Double Acting Powder Have you ever wondered why certain recipes called for baking powder and not baking soda or vice versa? Well the reasoning behind using one over the other has to do with their chemical make up. There are different reactions needed for different recipes. Baking soda and baking powder are both used as leavening agents. So let s take a look at baking soda. Baking soda s chemical name is sodium hydrogen carbonate. It also goes by Sodium bicarbonate. Baking Soda has a white, powder like consistency. It is low on the pH scale making it a very weak base. Baking soda has many uses other than baking. It can be used as a whitener or as a deodorizer. There are two types of baking soda you can use: Single acting powder and Double acting powder. Single acting powder reacts with moisture. As soon as you add moisture to the mix that includes a single Powell 2 acting baking powder, you must bake it right away. Double acting powder involves two different ways of releasing gas. When mixing with a double acting powder, some of the gas is released into the air while it is at room temperature. Most of the gas released, however, will be released in the oven while the temperature rises. Determining which ingredient, baking powder or baking soda, to use depends on the other ingredients within the recipe. The whole point cooking is to make food that you thoroughly enjoy eating because of the taste. Baking soda has a bitter taste. This bitter taste can be leveled out using the acidity of another ingredient, such as buttermilk. Baking soda is often found when baking cookies. Baking powder is neutral. • 36. The Death Toll Of Haiti It was typical late afternoon in Haiti capital of Port au Prince. People were strolling the streets, and local vendors were selling various goods at the Port au Prince historic Iron Market. Then at 4:53 pm on January 12, 2010 a 7.0 magnitude hit Haiti. Haiti had not seen a major earthquake like this in almost 200 years. People scrambled through the streets as the ground roared knocking down huge stone and brick building onto the streets of Port au Prince. An eyewitness describes the moment that the earthquake hit, The earth screamed; a sound of thunder that came from its belly as it violently shook the plants, the car, the walls, the pavement that I stood on. I called out to everyone to walk out of the house quickly. It seemed like a long, long time. Then silence. Then screams from some of the residents of the rural neighborhood (Clesca, 2010). This would be one of the deadliest earthquake of our generation. The estimated death toll was 316,000 deaths, and over 3 million people were displaced by the earthquake. Many people died when their dwelling collapsed and they were trapped under the rumble. People also died from falling objects, such as large building materials. This earthquake will ultimately change the structured of Haiti and leave many residents asking, who is responsible for the huge loss of life? As I have mention above, Haiti has not been hit by a major earthquake since the 18th century. Geologists first believed that Caribbean tectonic plates were responsible ... Race And Race Kamila Hilal The question at the center of this article is whether or not children between 5 and 6 years of age (in comparison to adults and children between 10 and 11 years of age) consider race to be a stable over time. This concept is important in understanding both the change in cognitive development of children as well as the significances of difference in social groups as a factor in understanding race. This controlled experimental study used white children ages 10 11, white children ages 5 6, white adults, and children (ages 5 6) of a racial minority. All participants were shown pictures of a young child as well as two grown ups and asked which of the two that young child will grow up to be (with both emotion and race of the images ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I believe the design is very reasonable and it is able to address the question well though perhaps within each of the four tested groups, the participants themselves could have been selected from various socioeconomic groups (white children ages 5 6 from different socioeconomic backgrounds, children ages 5 6 of a racial minority from different socioeconomic backgrounds, etc...). The experiment shows an implication that although there is a cognitive component with developing the understanding that race is stable, there is a great social component that is presented by the difference between the two 5 6 year old groups. Is it because children of a racial minority may be more likely to be educated by their parents on the concept of race? Is there also a socio economic component to this understanding. The article stated that the participants were recruited from the same region though a region is ambiguous. It would be interesting to see diversity of socio economic backgrounds within each of the groups (of course, new groups would need to be created in order to test for a socio economic factor). Does the socio economic background of a child from each of the groups affect their understanding of race in comparison between groups and/or within the group members? In addition, it would be interesting to further divide each group of children by ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. College Is A Waste Of Time And Money The amount of money spent on one year alone of college can break someone s heart. For most people college gets them to where they want to be, but with hard work and dedication going to work right after high school can take you a long way. Getting out of high school and starting a career early might be what some people want, but college is always an option with all the help they have today. College is a waste of time and money for a couple reasons. The fact that you spend 13 years in school just to go on to most likely spend four more years at some sort of college makes some kids think when it comes to should I go to college or not. Some kids believe that you can make more money working right after high school then heading to college for four years. Statistics say in College is a Waste of Time and Money by Caroline Bird, that if you put in the money you would have spent on college in the bank and let the interest alone build it up; by the time you are ready to retire you will have an extra $199,000. Although no bank will give a student that kind of money to put into a savings account that number opens a student s eyes. • 40. Prescription Drug Abuse And Prescription Drugs Prescription Drug Abuse Prescription Drug Abuse has increased in an alarming rate over recent years! Prescription drug related deaths now outnumber those from heroin and cocaine combined. The abuse in prescription drugs in America goes back more than a hundred years ago. Prescription drug abuse is the use of a medication without a prescription, in a way other than prescribed, or for the experience or feelings elicited. Although prescription medications are intended to help individuals, they can sometimes become addictive and can induce serious side effects, changes in behavior, and even death. From personal experience I know how dangerous Prescription Drug Abuse can be. When I was younger, my brother Clay overdosed on Prescription Drugs. He went to a pharm party, also known as a pill party. He was found passed out in a bedroom, and was put in a car and taken to the hospital. He was then found to have no heartbeat and they had to cut off his clothes and had to do the difibulizer. He is now in rehab doing much better.
