form an underlying foundation for many of the tensions between Sierra Leone which contributed to
the initial lack of economic prosperity for the settlement of freed slaves. Initial interactions founded
these tensions. Newly arrived freed slaves that settled in colonies in Sierra Leone employed local
Africans to help with building their settlements. However, despite this aid, the strains on the settlers in
terms of disease and disorder caused the initial settlements to fail. After this failure, more freed slaves
attempted to settle again at a different time of the year. They were warned that if they behaved
improperly, local African rulers would take them and sell them on slave ships (Braidwood 1994).
Indigenous Africans challenged this arrival of settlers and aggravated them, and settlers requested
defense supplies from Europe for fear of being massacred (Braidwood 1994). One of the shortfalls of
Thompson s perspective is that he seems to be unaware of the magnitude of the tensions between
indigenous Africans and freed slaves. Tribal chiefs led movements in resistance to European influence,
and Thompson is largely ignorant of this. The Temne chiefs who sold Freetown to British abolitionists
initiated a series of misunderstandings that would later incite conflict between the groups. This
founded some of the conflicts between indigenous Africans and Europeans, but Tribal chiefs were not
only provoked by European influence. The decline of the slave trade also meant that tribal

Chinatown Of San Francisco
Chinatown of San Francisco
There are many Chinatown in this world, and the Chinatown of San Francisco has much historical
significance; The Chinatown of San Francisco is the largest Chinatown in the United States, the
largest community of Chinese Americans outside of China. Today I want to write about the of San
Francisco base on my personal experience because there are many historic things I can illustrate.
Before I started traveling this field trip, I did some researches carefully in San Francisco city guide, so
I eager to travel as soon as possible. Finally I attended a free tour with San Francisco city guide, also
they assigned a tour guide, Marann.
There was a Mid Autumn parade in Chinatown on that day, accompanying the dragon and lion
dancing, Marann started to give us illustration about Chinatown. Because It is hard to get a parking lot
in Chinatown, and the people who live in Chinatown celebrated Mid Autumn Day, so I decided to take
BART to go there. Before I met our tour guide, I went across to Union Square and passed a tunnel.
The one side of the tunnel is to connect the western world, like Union Square, and the another side of
the tunnel is to connect to the orient world, Chinatown. Finally I walked to inside Portsmouth Square
Park, park level, and then I saw our tour guide, Manuel Maranan who took us to Chinatown. That s a
very big park, and it s close to Hilton hotel, there was a China s nation flag, also there was a Taiwan s
flag. Many Chinese visitors

Social Cultural Reality Theory in Action
72251 Intercultural Communication
Assignment 1

ID: 3304924
Short answers
Q. 1. Challenge DeVito, O Rourke and O Neill s (2000) definition of culture using Richards (1999) or
Anae (1997). How do DeVito et al look at membership within a culture and how does Richards see it
differently?
DeVito, O Rourke and O Neill s (2000, p.99) definition of culture is very limited when describing
modern cultures of globalised human society. Perhaps where people are isolated to villages, towns or
countries with little communication with the outside world, the definition would be completely
workable. But now, due to access of information, global trade, travel and immigration etc the world is

Essay
Social amp; Cultural reality theory in action
Melissa Peters
Bachelor of Arts Student, Open Polytechnic
Introduction
How is it we know when to laugh, cry or shout? Or when it would be rude or inappropriate to do so?
Why is it we value integrity, honesty, respect...or not? And where do our religious or spiritual beliefs
and practices come from?
This essay looks at theories of social construction and their part in the development of cultural and
societal realities. We look at constructivism as a means of learning social norms, values, beliefs etc
using examples from the production Tapu (Smith and Haami, 2000). In particular we ll address the
theories of emotional construction and rule governing.
So what is social construction?
Social construction is the idea that our understanding of reality derives from interaction with others. It
refers to the way we create meaning and understanding to build collectively held beliefs. These beliefs
are called social constructions or constructs .
In the 1967 book, The Social Construction of Reality, Berger and Luckmann argue that all knowledge,
including the most basic, taken for granted common sense knowledge of everyday reality, is derived
from and maintained by social interactions. (Wikipedia, 2012).
Culture is a vital aspect of

Odette s Swan Lake
On the exposed hillsides of the Tsagayan Formation located in Kundur, Russia, a team of
paleontologists discovered an almost complete skeleton of a hadrosaurid showing an extensive
infection spreading into the shoulders, seemingly stemming from a repaired, but misfigured, fracture
in her left front leg. Another piece left behind shows faintly scarred over skin if looked at closely.
Surrounding fossils include turtles, protoceratops, and crocodiles. This specimen, discovered to be an
Olorotitan, which means giant swan, named so for their longer than normal necks like that of a swan,
would be named Odette, from the ballet Swan Lake. This discovery of this sample, proved to have a

Instead of retreating to her own herd with her disfigured and still painful leg, she followed other
species of dinosaurs which she could keep up with. A small herd of protoceratops, goat sized
herbivores with beaks and frills, lead her to a clearing in the forest with small pterosaurs as well as
mammals. Full of white and yellow flowers and modern trees such as maples, beeches, oaks, and
others such as metasequoia with gnarled bark.
Notwithstanding how peaceful recent weeks were, Odette s youthful days would soon be over. The
inflammation, pain, and a recently developed fever had slowed her down from the typical style of life
made for travel. Previously, she had halted many times before, albeit this would be her last stop at the

UMUC Frederick MD Network Proposal
The network IP addressing scheme for the Frederick MD building should be designed to ease network
management. A well thought out network subnet design enables administrators to quickly locate
computers by IP address by building floor and room, and whether the computer is a server, a student
computer, staff computer or instructor s computer. A proper subnet design will also minimize
broadcast traffic that decreases network performance, by reducing the total number of computers
allowed in each broadcast domain. A proper subnet design will also provide for efficient use of IP

Ethernet limit) from the server room and a diagonal pull through the ceiling (258 feet plus a 30 foot

two rooms will require fiber optic cabling rather than CAT 6 UTP.
Wireless media access will be protected using WPA2 security with AES 256 encryption and a pre

The network will use the Hewlett Packard Procurve switches because of their high performance, low
cost relative to other brands (such as Cisco) and their lifetime warranty. The Hewlett Packard E5406zl

The Rights Of Indigenous Australians
Bringing Them Home
Human rights are inalienable, no matter what ethnicity or culture one belongs to. Every human is
entitled to their Human Rights. For a large period of time in Australian history Indigenous Australians
were discriminated against, abused and denied their Human Rights. The Bringing Them Home Report
significantly advanced the rights of Indigenous Australians as it began the reconciliation process
which recognised the injustices which had been done to Indigenous Australians involved in the Stolen
Generations, and set out a list of recommendations to create equality in Australia. Whilst an apology
was given to the Indigenous Australians the concept of reparations still remains a major topic in the

Lavelle s story is an example of how the law enforcements had intended assimilation to be. However

The Bringing Them Home Report was a result of the National Inquiry an investigation into the
separation of Indigenous Australians from their families. The aims of the National Inquiry were to
acknowledge the hardships the Indigenous Australians have faced and encourage reconciliation
between Indigenous and Non Indigenous Australians. The National Inquiry was co chaired by
commissioner Sir Ronald Wilson and Social Justice Commissioner Mick Dodson. The 777
submissions of evidence contributed to the National Enquiry came from numerous sources including:
Indigenous, government and religious organisations as well as testimony s from those involved in the

Indications For Liver Biopsy And Histological Assessment...
INDICATIONS FOR LIVER BIOPSY
Liver biopsy and histological assessment of the liver has now taken on an important role in clinical
management. Therefore liver biopsy currently has two major roles:
(A) Diagnostic purposes: Liver biopsy is helpful in diagnosis of many forms of liver disease such as
acute and chronic hepatitis (Wilson disease, alpha 1 antitrypsin disease, glycogen storage diseases,
AIH, NiemannPick disease and others), cholestatic disorders, fatty liver disease, vascular diseases,
infiltrative or storage diseases, some infectious diseases, and other disorders that may be associated
with characteristic histological abnormalities. It also plays a role in the diagnosis of patients with
abnormal liver tests of unknown etiology (Czaja et al., 2007). (B) Liver biopsy in the assessment of
known liver disease: Liver histology is also commonly used in disease monitoring of patients with
AIH. First, the portal based plasma cell infiltrate may predict relapse and second, liver biopsy is often
obtained prior to steroid dose reduction and/or discontinuation of immunosuppressive therapy
(Rockey et al., 2009). 1 Neonatal Cholestasis Some forms of neonatal cholestasis can be identified
biochemically and genetically, but others require LB.
Biliary atresia (BA): Typically neonates with BA have acholic stools, firm livers, and abnormal values
for biochemical markers of hepatobiliary injury. Histopathologic evaluation permits diagnosis of BA
in 96% of adequate LB

To determine the opportunity cost of capital, Marriott required three inputs: debt capacity, debt cost,
and equity cost consistent with the amount of debt. The cost of capital depends on each division. In
fact the evaluation of the WACC is an appropriate tool to calculate the cost of capital for the
corporation as a whole and for each division. The cost of equity One of the two major component of
WACC is the cost of equity. The cost of equity model takes into account three values which we must
calculate a risk free rate (rf), risk premium rate (expected market return rf), and Beta Value. Before
doing the calculations, we will justify our choices. We based it on the Stocks, Bonds, Bills and
Inflation (SBBI). This workmanship is a standard reference source for business appraisers. It has been
published annually since 1983. The beta value As it is said in the case, we already know the equity
beta (0,97). But the capital structure (leverage) affects beta estimates. In order to eliminate the effect
of leverage, we will calculate the asset beta, which reflects the sensitivity of the firm s assets
abstracting from capital structure. That is why we have to convert the equity beta into the asset beta.
Then we can calculate the equity beta without the leverage effect. To calculate the asset beta, we need
the current debt value. The ratio D/V for the company is set at 41% so we can find the ratio E/V is set
at 59%. It comes from the exhibit 3 which

then compared those words with the stolen encrypted passwords file to find out passwords of user

Project Delivery Methods For Distinct Allocation Of Risk...
Project delivery methods allow for distinct allocation of risk and responsibilities within a construction
contract. Each unique construction project calls for a defined delivery method and a written contract in
order to ensure the success of the venture. A project delivery option is defined as a method for
procurement which the owner s assignment of delivery risk and performance for design and
construction has been transferred to another party (Mahdi 564). After a legal and appropriate contract
is signed, contractual privity exists which allows the contracting parties to hold each other responsible
for their actions. The design bid build delivery method is often referred to the traditional method of
contractual relationships in the construction industry. This method allows the owner to select a design
professional based off of the quality of their work, whereas the selection of the construction manager
is based off competitive bids submitted after the completion of the design. The traditional method may
be viewed as the tried and true system of creating successful contractual relationships, but the
evolution of the industry has called for this method to take on different forms. One such form is the
construction manager at risk (CMR) method, which allows for collaboration between the owner,
designer, and construction manager during the early stages of the design process and continues
throughout the life of the construction project. This agreement makes up thirty percent

Eat This Now Analysis
America, an Obese Nation
The choices American s make about their eating habits has drastically changed over time. Today
America is an obese nation, because food is everywhere: at the grocery store, on billboard signs, or
even at the hardware store. There are statistics that prove America is an obese nation, the public just
has to go search for those. Many diets and experts have tips to give to help American s and others lose
weight. This is the point that Susan Brink and Elizabeth Querna are trying to get across in their article,

The eating habits that Americans have are either healthy or unhealthy. The healthy individuals are
probably the ones that work out, eat the right foods, and watch their daily consumption. While the
unhealthy ones are probably, just eating whatever is in their face at the time, drive everywhere, and
don t watch their daily intake. Because of this fact, it is easy to see why obesity is becoming a huge
part in the nation. The authors are trying to prove that Americans eat everywhere, all day long an
average of five meals a day, including snacks (2012, p. 621). Many people don t think they are
actually eating a lot because their proportion size is smaller than a normal meal but if someone were to
look back in the past they would find that the size would be much smaller. There are many
consequences that come from being obese, the authors only use one but it is one that really puts a
prospective on things. Obesity already reduces the current life expectancy in the United States by four
to nine months...Obesity rates among children and teens could knock off as many as five years from
todays average of 77 (2012, p. 620). Knowing this statistic helps the reader, look at their own life and

Film Analysis Of Nanook Of The North
Nanook of the North: Directed by Robert Flaherty, Nanook of the North (1922) is one of the most
famous travel films, or scenics, of all time. Flaherty spent years in Canada learning the culture of the
Inuit (eskimo) people there. What makes this story so captivating is that it is presented as more of a
drama than a documentary. Flaherty staged many scenes to portray Nanook as a protagonist, and the
harsh snowy environment as the antagonist. The way the footage was edited together helped make the
film interesting, since many of the sequences by themselves are boring. After being turned down by
many distribution companies, Flaherty eventually was able to get his film in theaters, where it became
a huge success, even so much as to become a staple of pop culture of the time. Over time, the film has
come to represent the eternal struggle between man and nature.
Agitki : At the dawn of the USSR, Vladimir Lenin proclaimed: Of all the arts, for us the cinema is the
most important. Lenin believed this because cinema was the easiest way to spread propaganda at the
time. Much of the people living in the Russian countryside were impoverished and illiterate. By
sending out propaganda films, called agitki, Lenin found the perfect method of educating the rural
masses on the new state of their government. This type of propaganda was meant to agitate and
enthuse audiences. They were typically very short, but also effective in spreading news to the
uneducated rural masses. In addition

Michael Kimmel s Impact Of The Media On Men
Impact of the Media on Men When boys are young they are told to toughen up or to stop acting like a
girl when they are sad or want to cry. Michael Kimmel, author of Bros Before Hos : The Guy Code,
discusses how there is a code guys are supposed to follow and how being taught natural behaviors,
such as crying or talking about emotions, are wrong at a young age negatively impacts boys for their
whole life. Emily Smith, the author of Life on the Island, talks about how a decrease in places that
have a feeling of community increases the suicide rate among men. Everyone tells boys to act a
certain way their father, coach, even people they don t know, but this is not the only place they hear
these negative statements. Television and magazine advertisements often depict men in an unrealistic
way that feels unachievable and because of this young boys who view these ads feel negatively about
themselves and because of the guy code they can t share their feelings and emotions which can lead to
depression or even suicide. Almost everyone is exposed to advertisements when they are children. Ads
are everywhere and they make people feel a certain way towards what they are trying to sell even if
the people involved feel unaffected. Ads are supposed to do this and can make their audience feel
happy, but there is a chance that they will do the opposite. Many ads make men feel like they are not
strong or tough enough. A study done on the effects of media images from magazines on the body and
self Esteem said, Men s Health and GQ both focus primarily on men s bodies and send very overt
messages about what men should look like. Therefore, it may be very easy for men who read these
magazines to feel as though they do not measure up (Hobza, Cody L., et al. 168). Ads in magazines or
on tv don t usually show men crying or talking about their emotions with their friends because that is
something men are not supposed to do; instead ads show them being strong, tough, and emotionally
stable. When guys or advertisements make other guys feel like they are not good enough or strong
enough, they have to deal with it themselves because they don t want to be emasculated by their
friends and family. Some men may feel like there is

already embodies her. To add further to her shame she chances upon a holy man who paints exerts
from the bible around the countryside. In red accusatory letters she reads THY, DAMNATION,
SLUMBERETH, NOT and is horrified to think how relevant it is to her recent misfortunes. Tess at
this stage is a victim to her own self conscience; she becomes a recluse trapped within her home,
while in reality she has broken no law of nature.
Returning to work in the field, Tess witnesses the rabbits forced further into shelter as the cornrows in
which they dwell are reaped. This is symbolic of Tess s own situation as she is being separated little
by little from family and friends and more importantly from her own childhood innocence. The baby
she has baptized as Sorrow dies, his name being an indication of the anguish that has taken place
within Tess due to the circumstances of his conception. It also epitomizes what is going to take place
in the rest of her sorrowful life.

Comparing The Lives Of Sheila And Eva Smith
In 1912, the time in which An Inspector calls is set, British society was in a state of great unrest. Even
though the play was written in 1946, Priestly reveals his opposition to materialism in society by
attacking an Edwardian family with his criticism. He writes about his worries about society at the time
and how they affect the community. By setting the play back in the Edwardian times, Priestly seems to
be warning everyone about how the way things used to be and the dangers of the same system
returning to our present society. The rich were getting richer and the poor were getting poorer. There
were genuine fears of a revolution. The community was divided into three different classes. The

She refuses to notice all the pain and suffering in the outside world, just like her father. Mr Birling,
who is rather portentous , is so morally blind that he rules out any possibility that there will be a World

was written, the titanic had sunk and the World War Two had finished. Not only was Mr Birling
content with his life, but also his wife, Mrs Birling is very much the same. She is even more
hypocritical and arrogant than her husband and is a rather cold woman . She considers anybody in the
class below her to be impertinent and worthless; almost as if they are another species. Girls of that
class Therefore she cannot see how the death of a lower class person can be of any importance to the

and also refuses to believe that Alderman Meggarty is a womaniser simply because of his status. Well,
really! Alderman Meggarty! I must say, we are learning something tonight. Sheila also seems to
follow in their footsteps at the beginning of the play. She uses her wealth and power to lose Eva Smith

1. If I were Palmer, I would let Olds to leave the team and request for an additional resource whose
interest aligns with the departmental goals. Having him on the team should be discontinued, because
his interest has been shifted to another team. 2. He should have discussed the issue with Sands at the
early stage before it escalated out of control. He should have had everybody committed to the terms of
using Crosby. Not only that but, also disallowed the carry over of Springfield Metals work to his
office. By so doing his department would not have been sub changed on the use of the resource Olds
in this instance. Olds discussion should have ended at the allotted time for each project without using
one project s time on the other. 3. There was a conflict of interest. In this case, there was a
dysfunctional conflict between the two mangers. Olds was at the center of the conflict. There was a
silent infighting between Palmer and Crosby for sharing the resource Olds. The stress level was high
for Olds because he was dealing with two managers performing two different tasks. This was also
extended to his home front. Palmer s project deliverables were lagging behind because of his
magnanimity of allowing Olds to be shared between him and Crosby. The advantage of shearing

Question 1a. Write a one page concise or two pages double spaced summary explaining the Federal
Reserve.
Basically, the Federal Reserve System is a banking system of the United States. It was created in
1913, with the enactment of the Federal reserve Act (2014). There are many responsibilities the
Federal Reserves has which include, supervision and regulation, monetary policy, payment services
and finally the financial stability. President Woodrow Wilson signed the Federal Reserve Act, into a
law. There are also many events that led up to the signing of the Federal Reserve Act that stuck out to
me.
The money and banking systems weren t the same in Colonial America. Colonial banks were not
allowed to accept deposits from the public or make loans. Instead, they issued paper currency backed
by metals and goals. Colonists were also limited to using bartering, European coinage as their primary
means of exchange. The legislation created a uniform national currency and permitted only nationally
chartered banks to issue bank notes (2014).
There was a period of a free banking era. There was a huge need for a reliable banking system during
the civil war. Many banks did not keep enough money on hand to meet the normal demands. People
lost their confidence in the banks and then began to go take their money out. This triggered a
succession of bank failures. The Federal Reserve System had a severe financial crisis, in

It can be argued that reproduction is one of, if not the sole purpose of all life. As creatures of higher

Being diagnosed as, or considering that you may be infertile can be world shattering.
Consider the following experience: You and your spouse of ten years are having difficulty conceiving

how this lot in life affects a variety of individuals.
Infertility is defined as the inability to conceive a child after 12 to 18 months of unprotected sex with a
partner. Infertility in women can be a result of failure of egg release, hormone imbalances, damage to
fallopian tubes and a number of other things, while in men it is usually considered a result of too few
sperm being produced. Eighty percent of couples, who will ultimately conceive, do so in the first 12
months (Feldman, 2017, p. 72). Now we examine the plight of the remaining 20% of couples,
beginning with the emotional aspects.

How Did Mao s Use Of Communism Affect China
Mao had a very questionable rule over China. Beginning in 1934, he used communism as his guide
and transformed China and its policies. From kicking out Chiang and the GMD, to causing the deaths
of millions of innocent chinese citizens, he shifted how citizens in China live their everyday life. His
death in 1976 ended his reign, but the horrors and atrocities still continued on, disrupting the personal
lives of all of China. As the chinese government creates new reforms and policies in China from 1945
1991, all human rights were constantly being violated, resulting in mass amounts of death caused by
Mao s poor leadership. The Hundred Flowers Campaign (1956 1957) and The Great Leap Forward

China s position as a superpower was achieved through the great suffrage of all of its citizens. Many
would argue that China doesn t deserve its position in the world, due to the millions of innocent deaths
due to the violations of human rights. However, China s future is bright. For example, China changed
its One Child Policy to a Two Child Policy in 2016, after about 35 years of loss of rights, family
control, and murders. This improvement is one of many that China has taken into their hands to
improve. The world should look at China s improvement, rather than its past, and acknowledge that
China is trying to make China a better place than its previous China, no matter how hard that may

Culture And The Culture Of Immigrants
Culture/pg. 34: the language, beliefs, values, norms, behaviors, and even material objects that
characterize a group and are passed from one generation to the next. In the video documentary called
Wetback, the culture of immigrants was very thoroughly seen. All of them struggle to find work at
their home country, and they want nothing more than to provide for themselves and their family. They
manage to live off of very little, but it is not enough and is obviously not the best way to go through
life. Because of this, the culture of the immigrant is created. People of all ages and each gender make
the decision to migrate to other countries such as the U.S. in hopes of finding a better paying job in
order to send money back to their families. This would also be known as a better life to most of them.
The idea of not worrying about if they will eat tomorrow sounds heavenly to them, and if there is a
chance that they may find that somewhere else, no matter how dangerous, they will take it. Their
culture is based off of poverty and hopes of finding a better life for the people surrounding them.
Every parent works as hard as they can for their child s education, but sadly a lot of the people are not
able to afford it. Because of these awful living conditions and non beneficial outcomes, many people
are forced to take on the tough, dangerous, and terrifying journey to another country in hopes of a
better lifestyle. Unfortunately, their culture experiences terrible things, from

I Am Legend
The movie I am Legend is a great movie. I really enjoy I am Legend because it is a story about Robert
Neville (Will Smith) and his dog Samantha, a German shepherd, surviving in a zombie apocalypse in
the heart of New York City. Now these are not your normal zombies they are more or less just
infected, but they cannot go into sunlight because it burns their skin very quickly. They are infected
with a virus that started out having the ability to cure cancer, but then later mutated the host into these
zombie like creature that are stronger, faster, and all senses increased from a human.

solutions on infected rats, and he found one that made ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
That night the infected find their way to Robert s house, they start to attack and get inside. Robert,
Anna, and Ethan go down to his lab in the basement, and lock themselves in a protected room with the
infected that he captured. The infected he capture was not infected anymore and was slowly becoming
human again, but the other infected started beating on the glass trying to break their way into the
room. So Robert takes a blood sample, which has the cure in it, of the captured infected gives it to
Anna and Ethan. He then locks them in a smaller emergency locker, and tells them to get the cure to
other scientists and fix it all. He then shuts the door and pulls a grenade out of a desk drawer. Looking
at all the infected in the room he pulls the pin and opens the door ending his life and killing all the
infected in the area. Anna and Ethan then find their way to other people and scientists and were able to
save the world because of the work of Robert Neville. In my opinion, the movie I am Legend is a
fantastic movie for many reasons being from plot, to characters, and to the producer. The plot was
based on a 1954 horror book I am Legend by Richard Matheson. This story is what he is most well
known for and made him popular. Richard had many great works and those got him the chance to
write sixteen episodes for the popular television show The Twilight Zone. This television show aired
from 1959 to 1964 with five seasons and 156 episodes. Making the book into a movie shows that it

Why An Individual Colleague Has Difficult Behavior
Running any business has its own challenges; however, most companies encounter difficult
employees, how can this issues be solved? First and foremost understanding why an individual
colleague has difficult behaviour. I have chosen to analysis why difficult staffs could be problematical
to any business. How does the role of a manager/leader play within the business to have effective
employees, whom can work as team player and perform at high standard? Furthermore looking into
the negative impact it has on a business and what could be the solution of having great working
efficient staffs. I based my research finding on google books, as well as using online articles. Firstly,
every business establishment has leaders whom play major role in, managing productive staffs. The
managers must have effective communication skills; for staffs to understand their roles within the
business, what their daily duties are. Instruction must be given as to when deadline must be
implemented. Adequate tools and equipment s must be provided, for example within the retail industry
merchandise products must be replenished on the shop floor and never should it be out of stock as this
will prevail the input of staffs to feel lack of motivation, therefore the employees will call in sick
rather than go into work place, that has no stocks to sell to customers. If staffs do not apprehend the
role of their jobs and responsibilities, these might bring on stress and inadequate of performing daily
tasks.

The Mona Lisa By Leonardo Da Vinci
One of the world s most famous paintings is the Mona Lisa. It was created by the Renaissance s most
highly praised artist, Leonardo da Vinci, in the years 1503 to 1506. Leonardo worked on this painting
while he lived in Florence, Italy, and it is made using oil paints on a poplar wood panel. The painting
depicts, simply, a woman in front of an expansive landscape of rocky hills, valleys, mountains, and
bodies of water. It was discovered in King Francis I s royal collection, but this is no surprise
considering that Leonardo worked for him in France from 1516 up until Leonardo s death in 1519. It
was transported to the Louvre, which is a museum in Paris, France. The painting was stolen in 1911 by
a widely known Italian art thief named Vincenzo Peruggio. It was recovered two years later and
returned to the Louvre, where it still resides today. In 1951, the panel it was painted on showed signs
of warping, and so a wooden frame was added to the piece, as well as braces in 1970. Dovetails were
also a necessity in preserving the work, due to a crack that had started to spread. As of 2012, the value
of the painting sits at $760 million. Leonardo used sfumato to create the fine shading of Mona Lisa s
clothes and hair, as well as using it to compliment the landscape behind her. Upon closer inspection,
one can see that she does not have any eyebrows. There are multiple theories for this, including
Leonardo s decision to not give her any, or maybe she simply didn t have any, as it was

Moot Court Panel 1
A.C.L.U and Planned Parenthood v. Pence Opinion
The case of A.C.L.U and Planned Parenthood v. Pence has brought attention to the Supreme Court
with the question of which of the two is of greater importance: the duty to honor the woman s
autonomy versus the duty to respect potential life. Indiana s governor, Mike Pence, has signed a
House Enrolled Act No.1337 to amend the Indiana health code, which will go in effect on July 1 of
2016. The act affects abortions in several ways which include that doctors much provide perinatal
hospice care information to women considering abortion after receiving a diagnosis of a lethal fetal
anomaly, prohibits all abortions solely based on fetus s race, color, national origin, ancestry, sex, or
diagnosis of the fetus having any disability, and lastly requires the women to take responsibility
financially for the disposal of the remain of any abortion or miscarriage. After the act was signed into
law, A.C.L.U of Indiana and Planned Parenthood of Indiana and Kentucky sued Governor Pence on
the grounds that the law was unconstitutional. The A.C.L.U and Planned Parenthood won in the
district court. The case was appealed to the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals and was reversed. Today, the
court responds to the petitioners appeal by holding that Indiana s House Enrolled Act No.1337 is

Businesses that use a cash drawer, can be particularly susceptible to employee theft. Cash is always a
higher temptation because it is easy to take and easy to hide and difficult for employers to trace. Still,
there are quite a few processes that can be put into place to dissuade employees from stealing and
from the business. A few options include:
1) Separate Cash Drawers At the beginning of every shift a counted cash drawer should be given to
each cashier. This provides a definitive starting amount for reference. Each cashier should be
responsible for their own individual drawer. Shared drawers will make it impossible to pinpoint which
employee might be the one stealing if a situation occurs.
2) Verifying Cash Drawer Counts Each cashier should count the cash in the drawer provided to them
at the beginning of the shift. After counting, the employee must sign the register tape to confirm that
the cash amount and the sales tape are in balance. This prevents discrepancies regarding the amount a
drawer had when the shift began.
3) Mid shift Readings At some point during each shift, without advanced notice, a manager should
take the current drawer and provide a new drawer to each cashier. A sales report should be run on the
used drawer to verify that it is in balance. This measure will prevent cashiers from storing stolen cash
in the drawer during their shift. A second drawer swap should periodically be conducted as well to
prevent predictability of the

A Formal Analysis of Potential Career Choices
A Formal Analysis Of Potential Career Choices
Introduction A formal analysis of the characteristics and outlook for two possible career choices
Policeman vs. Lawyer is a valuable tool in the decision making process used by an employment
candidate to make a successful selection between them. New entrants into the job market face a very
competitive environment and training (or re training) for jobs is frequently expensive and time
consuming. Therefore there is a definite need to make one s career decisions using a comprehensive,
formal analysis in order to promote a successful and satisfying career choice. Background information
was gathered by a search of peer reviewed articles from governmental and professional journal
sources in the literature. These articles provided several important variables to be considered in the
methodology, including: (a) candidate gender; (b) candidate ethnicity; (c) educational level; (d)
physical demands; (e) mental/analytical demands; (f) pathways to advancement; and (g) employment
outlook. These decision variables are identified for each potential career choice and then compared
and contrasted between the career options. A conclusion is then reached as to a recommended best fit
option relative to a candidate s career goals and interests.

colonization, western cowboys of the 19th century all the up to today s modern era. The revolver has
long since been a staple of American portrayals in pop culture. On June 21, 1968 TIME magazine
debuted its weekly issue with the cover dawning a cartoon hand and smoking revolver accompanied
by brightly contrasting colors. The image comes weeks after Senator Robert Kennedy was
assassinated in the lobby of a Los Angeles hotel. Nearly three months prior to that atrocity, Martin
Luther King Jr was shot and killed standing on the balcony of a motel room in Memphis, Tennessee.
That same year, American households were still gripping to the striking images ... Show more content

Roy Lichtenstein s color usage and choice ties in perfectly with the magazine s legacy and heritage.
Sticking with primary colors, the blue background offers a patriotic sense to the cover in conjunction
with the red perimeter. The color choice relates to the traditional American colors and displays
Lichtenstein s classic usage of irony. Usage of the blue and red with the smoking gun characterizes the
undying pride American s have for their country even during times of chaos. The portrayal of how
American s choose to turn away from seeing the harm that is being done not only to the country s
reputation but to the citizens as well. Choosing to use yellow not only continues the comic style theme
but it also gives the audience a major contrast in relation to the more classical colors. The yellow
forces the reader s conscious to make the connection between the smoke and the importance of the
text to the right of it. Keeping the colors, and the cover as a whole, relatively basic allows the reader to

Environmental Contamination
The question lies does environmental contamination have a major effect on real estate properties?
Well environmental contamination turns out can cost the owner of the property or a potential buyer.
Environmental contamination on a property may have some implication on the on the property value.
Not only could potentially hurt the owner or potential buyer financially it could also do physical
damage to the property as well.
As a property owner or potential buyer they must be aware of what environmental contamination can
do to the property. There can be a range of things from toxic waste, noise pollution, the quality of
water and condemned properties. The risk of toxic waste left on or contaminates a property could
cause the property to sell at a lower price compared to similar properties. These toxic in ... Show more

It also has a lot to do with where these properties are located, most properties that are contaminated
are located near facilities such as landfills, power plants, and refineries. These properties value are
affect through the bundle rights of real estate. Bundle rights are the right of possession, the right of
control, the right of exclusion, the right of enjoyment and the right of disposition. With the property
being contaminated some may say property owners losses some of the rights under bundle rights. It
can be said that rights of enjoyment and disposal are not easily accessible. Therefore the loss on the
properties will be recognized as capital loss when the properties are sold if they can be sold.
In conclusion contamination of the environment usually has a negative impact on real estate.
Contamination will end up costing the owner or the potential buyer to weather it toxic noise or water
pollution. Contamination on the properties can also infringe on the owner bundle rights as

Meaning Of Sports Michael Mandelbaum Summary
Rejected by Rose, screamed, TNT broadcaster, Kevin Harlan. Derrick Rose s block on Rajon Rondo s
shot was the play that forced game 7 and kept the Bull s season alive. The 2009 first round series
between the Chicago Bulls and the reigning NBA champions, Boston Celtics was the best playoff
series I ever watched. What does Rose s late game heroics have to do with anything? The excitement
of the sport of basketball. My paper will be about my favorite sport to watch and play I will also
mention about my favorite sport to participate in ancillary. Afterward, I will relate my favorite sport to
Michael Mandelbaum s The Meaning of Sports and offer my opinion on the book. Out of the three
professionalized, spectator driven sports my favorite to watch ... Show more content on

For starters, Mandelbaum is very long winded his chapters go on forever. There are certain ideas that
he can convey in 5 pages but instead, he chooses to do so in 15 pages. His writing style is so plain that
it makes following the chapters that much harder. The information that Mandelbaum presents about in
relation to the sports of baseball, football and basketball are good I just wish his chapters were shorter.
Information can get lost quickly if there are 80 pages of information to read about one sport. Aside
from that, I learned a lot from his chapter about basketball. In chronological order, Mandelbaum
writes how the game of basketball shifted from a sport that was primarily white to primarily African
American. The first African American player to enter the NBA was in 1950. By the 1980s four out of
every five starting players in the league were black. Mandelbaum makes the argument that African
Americans were needed in the league or else the game would not have been as developed as it is now.
The game as it developed would have been far poorer in every way without them (Mandelbaum,248).
The same time that the professional game was developing so too was the street game. In chapter 4 I
learned about the winner take all market. According to investopedia.com, this is a concept in which
the best performers are able to capture a very large share of the rewards, and the remaining
competitors are left with very little. The chances of most African American making it to the NBA is
very slim, according to the book chances are 135,800 to

  • 3. Jacks Causes And Disadvantages form an underlying foundation for many of the tensions between Sierra Leone which contributed to the initial lack of economic prosperity for the settlement of freed slaves. Initial interactions founded these tensions. Newly arrived freed slaves that settled in colonies in Sierra Leone employed local Africans to help with building their settlements. However, despite this aid, the strains on the settlers in terms of disease and disorder caused the initial settlements to fail. After this failure, more freed slaves attempted to settle again at a different time of the year. They were warned that if they behaved improperly, local African rulers would take them and sell them on slave ships (Braidwood 1994). Indigenous Africans challenged this arrival of settlers and aggravated them, and settlers requested defense supplies from Europe for fear of being massacred (Braidwood 1994). One of the shortfalls of Thompson s perspective is that he seems to be unaware of the magnitude of the tensions between indigenous Africans and freed slaves. Tribal chiefs led movements in resistance to European influence, and Thompson is largely ignorant of this. The Temne chiefs who sold Freetown to British abolitionists initiated a series of misunderstandings that would later incite conflict between the groups. This founded some of the conflicts between indigenous Africans and Europeans, but Tribal chiefs were not only provoked by European influence. The decline of the slave trade also meant that tribal ... Therefore liver biopsy currently has two major roles: (A) Diagnostic purposes: Liver biopsy is helpful in diagnosis of many forms of liver disease such as acute and chronic hepatitis (Wilson disease, alpha 1 antitrypsin disease, glycogen storage diseases, AIH, NiemannPick disease and others), cholestatic disorders, fatty liver disease, vascular diseases, infiltrative or storage diseases, some infectious diseases, and other disorders that may be associated with characteristic histological abnormalities. The cost of capital depends on each division. In fact the evaluation of the WACC is an appropriate tool to calculate the cost of capital for the corporation as a whole and for each division. The cost of equity One of the two major component of WACC is the cost of equity. The cost of equity model takes into account three values which we must calculate a risk free rate (rf), risk premium rate (expected market return rf), and Beta Value. It has been published annually since 1983. The beta value As it is said in the case, we already know the equity beta (0,97). But the capital structure (leverage) affects beta estimates. In order to eliminate the effect of leverage, we will calculate the asset beta, which reflects the sensitivity of the firm s assets abstracting from capital structure. That is why we have to convert the equity beta into the asset beta. Then we can calculate the equity beta without the leverage effect. To calculate the asset beta, we need the current debt value. Each unique construction project calls for a defined delivery method and a written contract in order to ensure the success of the venture. A project delivery option is defined as a method for procurement which the owner s assignment of delivery risk and performance for design and construction has been transferred to another party (Mahdi 564). After a legal and appropriate contract is signed, contractual privity exists which allows the contracting parties to hold each other responsible for their actions. The design bid build delivery method is often referred to the traditional method of contractual relationships in the construction industry. This method allows the owner to select a design professional based off of the quality of their work, whereas the selection of the construction manager is based off competitive bids submitted after the completion of the design. Flaherty spent years in Canada learning the culture of the Inuit (eskimo) people there. What makes this story so captivating is that it is presented as more of a drama than a documentary. Flaherty staged many scenes to portray Nanook as a protagonist, and the harsh snowy environment as the antagonist. The way the footage was edited together helped make the film interesting, since many of the sequences by themselves are boring. After being turned down by many distribution companies, Flaherty eventually was able to get his film in theaters, where it became a huge success, even so much as to become a staple of pop culture of the time. Write a one page concise or two pages double spaced summary explaining the Federal Reserve. Basically, the Federal Reserve System is a banking system of the United States. It was created in 1913, with the enactment of the Federal reserve Act (2014). There are many responsibilities the Federal Reserves has which include, supervision and regulation, monetary policy, payment services and finally the financial stability. President Woodrow Wilson signed the Federal Reserve Act, into a law. There are also many events that led up to the signing of the Federal Reserve Act that stuck out to me. The money and banking systems weren t the same in Colonial America. Colonial banks were not allowed to accept deposits from the public or make loans. Instead, they issued paper currency backed by metals and goals. Colonists were also limited to using bartering, European coinage as their primary means of exchange. The legislation created a uniform national currency and permitted only nationally chartered banks to issue bank notes (2014). There was a period of a free banking era. There was a huge need for a reliable banking system during the civil war. Many banks did not keep enough money on hand to meet the normal demands. People lost their confidence in the banks and then began to go take their money out. This triggered a succession of bank failures. The Federal Reserve System had a severe financial crisis, in ... In the video documentary called Wetback, the culture of immigrants was very thoroughly seen. All of them struggle to find work at their home country, and they want nothing more than to provide for themselves and their family. They manage to live off of very little, but it is not enough and is obviously not the best way to go through life. Because of this, the culture of the immigrant is created. People of all ages and each gender make the decision to migrate to other countries such as the U.S. in hopes of finding a better paying job in order to send money back to their families. This would also be known as a better life to most of them. The idea of not worrying about if they will eat tomorrow sounds heavenly to them, and if there is a chance that they may find that somewhere else, no matter how dangerous, they will take it. Their culture is based off of poverty and hopes of finding a better life for the people surrounding them. Every parent works as hard as they can for their child s education, but sadly a lot of the people are not able to afford it. So Robert takes a blood sample, which has the cure in it, of the captured infected gives it to Anna and Ethan. He then locks them in a smaller emergency locker, and tells them to get the cure to other scientists and fix it all. He then shuts the door and pulls a grenade out of a desk drawer. It was created by the Renaissance s most highly praised artist, Leonardo da Vinci, in the years 1503 to 1506. Leonardo worked on this painting while he lived in Florence, Italy, and it is made using oil paints on a poplar wood panel. The painting depicts, simply, a woman in front of an expansive landscape of rocky hills, valleys, mountains, and bodies of water. It was discovered in King Francis I s royal collection, but this is no surprise considering that Leonardo worked for him in France from 1516 up until Leonardo s death in 1519. It was transported to the Louvre, which is a museum in Paris, France. The painting was stolen in 1911 by a widely known Italian art thief named Vincenzo Peruggio. It was recovered two years later and returned to the Louvre, where it still resides today. In 1951, the panel it was painted on showed signs of warping, and so a wooden frame was added to the piece, as well as braces in 1970. Dovetails were also a necessity in preserving the work, due to a crack that had started to spread. As of 2012, the value of the painting sits at $760 million. Leonardo used sfumato to create the fine shading of Mona Lisa s clothes and hair, as well as using it to compliment the landscape behind her. Upon closer inspection, one can see that she does not have any eyebrows. There are multiple theories for this, including Leonardo s decision to not give her any, or maybe she simply didn t have any, as it was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 41. A Note On Crime Prevention Crime Prevention Businesses that use a cash drawer, can be particularly susceptible to employee theft. Cash is always a higher temptation because it is easy to take and easy to hide and difficult for employers to trace. Still, there are quite a few processes that can be put into place to dissuade employees from stealing and from the business. A few options include: 1) Separate Cash Drawers At the beginning of every shift a counted cash drawer should be given to each cashier. This provides a definitive starting amount for reference. Each cashier should be responsible for their own individual drawer. Shared drawers will make it impossible to pinpoint which employee might be the one stealing if a situation occurs. 2) Verifying Cash Drawer Counts Each cashier should count the cash in the drawer provided to them at the beginning of the shift. After counting, the employee must sign the register tape to confirm that the cash amount and the sales tape are in balance. This prevents discrepancies regarding the amount a drawer had when the shift began. 3) Mid shift Readings At some point during each shift, without advanced notice, a manager should take the current drawer and provide a new drawer to each cashier. A sales report should be run on the used drawer to verify that it is in balance. This measure will prevent cashiers from storing stolen cash in the drawer during their shift.
