independent investigation for an Officer Involved Shooting/Use of Force and an alleged Aggravated
Assault of a Police Officer in the early morning hours of September 13, 2016. Sherry Hall, an officer
for the Jackson Police Department, was patrolling in the area of Camellia Court just after midnight

Political Ideas of Niccolo Machiavelli, Francesco Guicciardini, and Thomas Hobbes
The sections that I will be presenting are 73, 74, and 75. I will discuss the political ideas of Niccolo
Machiavelli, Francesco Guicciardini, and Thomas Hobbes during the time of Florence Republic. First,
Niccolo Machiavelli was born in Florence, Italy in 1469 at a time when the country was in political
upheaval. Italy was divided between four dominant city states, by which each of them was always at
the mercy of the continual changing of princes and governments.
In Donald Kelley s Version of History, the Medici family had brought a form of stability to Florence,
but the golden age of Florentine republic soon declined after the death of Lorenzo ... Show more

Machiavelli recognizes Lycurgus of deserving the highest praise for the governing of Sparta in
distributing power to the king, the nobles, and the people. He established a government, which lasted
for over eight hundred years. Machiavelli uses the Roman Empire as an example because they
conquered the world and held their power for over a thousand years. They accomplished this from
having strength and stability. Florence needs to replicate the ideologies of Rome in order to become as
powerful and great. Machiavelli wants Florence to adopt these patterns so that ultimately Florence will
have the same success as Rome. In short, I think Machiavelli is emphasizing the importance of
decisive action and courage. He uses bold writings to encourage men, so that they will build a safe and
stable world for people.
Francesco Guicciardini: Section 74 Francesco Guicciardini was born in 1483 and died in 1540, like
Machiavelli he worked for government of Florence and wrote about the history of his city and country
as well as about the politics of his time. His philosophies toward politics were formed after the
invasion of the French invasions of 1494. Francesco and Machiavelli had one thing in common their
love for the city of Florence. However, unlike Machiavelli who chooses to use examples of past
empires to talk about history. Guicciardini finds that to judge

Understanding Learning and Memory with the Morris Water Maze
Abstract
The overstimulation of GABA inhibitory receptors in the hippocampus has been found to obstruct
spatial learning and memory. Ethanol was administered to male Swiss Webster mice in low and high
doses in order to test its pharmacological effects on memory. The Morris water maze experiment was
conducted as the experimental basis of understanding ethanol s capacity to inhibit and/or suppress
cognition, specifically memory in the hippocampus. Three individually marked, male, 47 day old
Swiss Webster mice per 5 groups were used to conduct the Morris water maze experiment. The
average time spent in the water amongst all 3 experimental groups decreased post injection; with the
10% ethanol treated mice having the best memory recall. There were a few factors that may have
contributed to the surprising results of the experiment, such as a small sample size and varying
tolerance levels. Understanding the role of GABA and glutamate in cognition can provide the
foundation for further research and experimentation of memory formation and recall in the
hippocampus.
Introduction
Learning and memory have been topics of particular interest to neuroscientists and neurophysiologists

The Dilemma of Macular Degeneration
According to Baily and Hall, while visual impairment early in life is associated with inherited
congenital disorders, abnormal fetal devepment, and problems associated with premature birth, most
eye conditions are associated with aging. They claim that over 70% of the visually impaired
population in the United States is over 65. Age related maculopathy, also called macular degeneration,
or AMD, impairs the center of vision in older individuals. The macula is the region in the back of the
retina that surrounds and includes the fovea (Goldstein 1999). It is important to understand that when
this degeneration progresses enough, the condition constitutes blindness because the foveal area is

Danger can exist for victims of the condition when simply walking down the street or even through
their own homes. While there is yet no cure for macular degeneration the research is in progress. Two
main areas of research include investigating the causes and exploring potential treatments.
According to Friedman, progress in the effort to stop or prevent AMD will be slow until the cause is
learned. He claims retinal pigmant epithelium damage to be the prominant theory explaining the
choroidal circulation changes that lead to AMD. Although Friedmal himself does not subscribe to this
theory, other researchers do and use it as a basis for study. Grunwald, Harisprasad, Dupont, M. G.
Mguire, Fine, Bruker, A.M. Maguire, and Ho compared choroidal blood flow in subjects with AMD to
a control group. They used laser doppler flowmetry to asess the volume, velocity, and flow of blood in
the center of the fovea. Ten subjects with no drusen (cellular debris) were compared to 20 subjects
with ten or more large drusen. The average visual acuities of the two groups was very close. No
significant differences between age, blood pressure, or intraocular pressure was revealed between the
subjects. Spraul, G. E. Lang, Grossnik laus, and G. K. Lang questioned the validity of the study. They
claim doppler flowmetry to be an imperfect method for such a study because of multiple light
scattering properties of the tissue. They also

10. Negative Consequences Of The Dust Bowl
I ve seen very often that some people seem to think their actions won t have any negative
consequences, or effect on anything around them. This can lead them to make decisions that have can
create major consequences for others and themselves, all for personal gain. This idea was widely acted
upon in the 1920 s, where so many people had not known that their actions would lead to, creating
The Great Depression. One of the more important Consequences was called the Dust Bowl. The Dust
Bowl was an event caused by the rise of farming in the 1920 s, which continues to affect the way we
grow our crops to this very day. The Dust Bowl was known as a large section of the US that was
covered in a large amount of powerful dust storms, which was caused by over excessive farming
during the 1920 s. Like many things during the time period, farming had started to become more and
more profitable. In fact, farming had been getting more profitable since WW1. However, this caused
people to become greedy. People would farm more and more land each year, in an effort to produce
better results. Farmers plowed away at field after field, unaware that anything negative would occur
from it. As said in the article The Dust Bowl on USHistory.com, What was unknown to these early
pioneers was that the grass and trees of the plains essentially nourished and held the soil in place with
their tough roots, (3). So when farmers would plow the land, they were disturbing what was keeping

a combination of fact and fiction writing. The literary journalists of this time period wrote about real

dialogue. They wrote longer and more complex pieces similar to novels, consisting of more than one
larger truth. The journalists pursued sources in the same manner as a conventional journalist; however,

Introduction
Virtual Universities are on the rise and are a legitimate threat to replace the traditional University. The
most prominent reason for the current explosion in student enrollment in the virtual universities, are
advancements in telecommunications technologies. This paper presents a methodology for
quantitatively testing the relationship between growth in telecommunications technologies, and
parallel growth in student enrollment in Category 1, Title IV 2yr and 4yr degree granting distance

As advancements in telecommunications technologies go forward the costs associated with such
technologies have decreased while the benefits increased. New cutting edge technologies are always
priced at a premium when they are introduced into the market. As competitors enter the market the
cost of the technology gradually declines and demand rises following the law of demand.
In this project one of the major questions that must be answered is whether the value of low cost
distance education programs, supported by new and innovative telecommunication technologies, is
greater than the value of traditional educational programs costing much more. The researcher proposes
that the explosive growth in student enrollment in on line programs answer this question affirmatively.
The researcher will use quantitative analysis to support the null hypothesis identified in the document.
Within the context of this quasi experimental study the researcher has carefully investigated the role
advancements in telecommunications technologies have played in the establishment and growth of
virtual universities in the U.S., the impact telecommunications technologies have had on Title IV, Post
Secondary 2yr and 4yr degree granting colleges and universities, how the explosive growth in on line

15. Night, By Elie Wiesel
The Holocaust is arguably one of the most horrific events in human history. As the last Jewish
survivors are passing away from old age, the importance of Holocaust related documentation is going
to be imperative in teaching the next generations about the monstrosities that went on during this time.
In the 1960 novel, Night, Elie Wiesel utilizes several literary devices, including the symbology of
nighttime, motif of religious practices, and theme of father son relationships, in order to emphasize the
atrocities of the Holocaust specifically for Jews. Wiesel s first hand experience in concentration camps
allows for a vivid retelling of what many people had to endure.
The symbolic portrayal of the nighttime helps to add a deeper meaning to the text. The title of the
novel, Night, brings the symbol to the forefront of the reader s mind. Nightfall is a time full of fear
and lack of clarity due to the lack of light. This immediately presents an environment without safety or
predictability. Similarly, the first mention of nighttime in the story is when Elie s father receives the
news that all of the Jews in his area are going to be moved into another confined section of the town.
The introduction of the night signifies the end of the sun s appearance and a plunging into darkness.
There is no longer any light which Wiesel uses to mark the descent into the unknown as they enter the
confined areas and later the work/concentration camps. Additionally, when Elie and his father are

Yet, his blindness of knowledge is not the only factor leads him to this sudden downfall, from the king

The children in the first group displayed highly imitative behaviour (Artino 2006).
The results of the Bobo Doll Experiment created a surge of interest into the possible correlation
between media violence and violent behaviour. Meyers (2002) conducted a study on the effects of
violent video games and violent television (T.V) programs on primary school boys. The school boys
were divided into non violent and violent conditions; watching a violent or non violent T.V program,
playing a violent or non violent video game or playing a game and watching a T.V program thereafter
(Meyers 2002). The children then had to answer a questionnaire ,whereby they had to finish a sentence
using a violent or non violent word, for example; I want to ___ the book (tear/read) (Meyers 2002, p.
17). The second test of violent behaviour was the placement of the children in identical conditions to
the Bobo Doll Experiment . According to Meyers (2002), the children in the violent conditions
portrayed more aggressive behaviour patterns than the boys in the non violent condition, the boys in
the combined condition (playing a video game and watching a violent television program) had
significantly higher aggression levels than those in any other condition.

24. Essay about Racial Privilege in America Past and Present
The Blame Game: a Prelude to Racial Privilege In order to fully understand an easily debatable and
highly controversial policy, such as racial privilege, one must first understand the political and social
climates that led up to it. Racial privilege has been practiced during two periods in America s past: the
post reconstruction era, via Jim Crow laws, and today, by way of affirmative action. After
Reconstruction in the American south, landowners reorganized their land in such a way that it could
be farmed without the use of slaves. The most common structure employed sharecropping, in which
the land owner divided his property into several plots of land, each farmed by different individuals
who paid for the use of this land with a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ironically, this economic downfall was actually caused by the wealthy landowners and lenders who,
for the most part, made up this Democratic leadership. Poor whites, eager to find a scapegoat for their
problems, endorsed the idea of racial privilege. By seeking restitution, whites in the south successfully
managed to evade personal responsibility, while also evading the possibility of a true solution to their
problems. Thus began the Jim Crow era of racial oppression. In a related string of events, the Civil
Rights movement of the 1960s failed to bring about solutions to the problem of racial inequality
plaguing America. Not until the death of one of its most prominent leaders, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.,
did the Civil Rights Movement transform from a movement for racial equality to a movement for
racial privilege. King, in his speech during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, makes
clear the ideal of racial equality: I have a dream... that my four little children will one day live in a
nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.
After King s assassination, new leaders arose claiming that it is not enough that blacks and whites are
treated equally, but that, in order for deliverance from their troubled past, they must be given
preference over those who

25. The Effects Of Coercion During Interrogations
The Effects of Coercion During Interrogations
Nicholas Cox
Troy University Abstract
The interrogation process that police use requires planning, preparation, and skill. In this paper, I will
break down each element that makes up the police interrogation process and describe how flawed
interrogation tactics can make the interrogation less than completely accurate. Coercion and duress are
similar in that they both create an environment of intimidation during the interrogation process.
Coercion is defined as the use or threat of use of illegal physical methods to induce a suspect to make
an admission or confession. Accordingly, duress is the imposition of restrictions on physical behavior
such as prolonged interrogation, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Because of pressure from peers and family members who might be present on the scene, it is
important to remove the suspect from familiar surroundings, take him or her to a location with a more
sterile and less threatening atmosphere (Lyman, 1993). If an investigator selects an inappropriate area
to conduct the interrogation, the suspect may be pressured into responses or statements that are not
true. For example, if a suspect is questioned in an environment where family is present, they might be
inclined to give deceptive responses in order to hide the truth from their family. If a suspect is
questioned in an intimidating environment, they might get pressured into a false confession if they feel
that no matter what they say the investigators already have the evidence required for a conviction.
The CIA report on enhanced interrogation techniques has a perfect example on how the place of the
interrogation is used as a factor for achieving the desired results in an interrogation. The Senate
Intelligence Committee released a report on the alleged use of torture and enhanced interrogation
techniques used at various locations to interrogate suspected terrorists. Conditions at CIA detention
sites were poor, and were especially bleak early in the program. CIA detainees at the COBALT
detention facility were kept in complete darkness and constantly shackled in isolated cells with loud
noise or music

26. Compare And Contrast The Four Careers In Anthropology
Archaeologists are those who study past human cultures and behaviors. They examine material
remains of previous human societies, which include human fossils, food remains, ruins, and also
things like tools, pottery, and jewelry. Archaeologists try to reconstruct the past from their studies.
Anthropology is the comparative study of human societies and cultures and their development.
Anthropology looks for the basis of behavior that applies to the entire populace. There are four
primary fields of anthropology which are biological anthropology, cultural anthropology, linguistic
anthropology, and archaeology. Archaeologists are anthropologists who specialize in ancient societies.

In the case of Martha Vandenberg, Joe Swanson did what he could in order to rid her from Cornelius
Mercker Elementary School. Although limited, as principal of the school, there were a couple of
powers that he utilized in order to deal with Martha. It is important to note that Joe only had
organizational power, and no personal power in this situation. The first power Joe used was legitimate
power. Often known as formal authority, legitimate power comes from having a position in an
organization that commands authority (pg. 414). When Martha claimed she could not teach on the
second floor due to a fractured toe, as her boss, Joe had the power to ask for a doctor s note and deny

The January precept states that you are far too smart to be the only thing standing in your way. I

perspective, and thought about what it means. After several days of contemplation I decided to directly
apply the precept to different life situations. By the end of the month I had learned many new things
about myself. This time also helped me gain insight on the true meaning behind the January precept.
Ultimately I decided to agree with the principle of the January Precept. In my life, the January precept

living by the principal of the January precept. In the past I often allowed myself to get in the way of

30. Industrialization Of America
What factors led to Industrialization of America? Industrialization is growing or development of
industries and factories in a country or region. The United States were far behind most countries in the
1700a 1800s. The US was a young nation and they had no loyalty or respect given to them by any
country at this time. The people of the US wanted change, they wanted respect, and they wanted to be
independent form all of the surrounding countries and civilizations. One of the main things that lead to
the Industrialization of America, was the Embargo Act of 1807. In 1807, Britain began to blockade all

After the war was over, it was time for change. The US couldn t get any of the things they needed
because of the Embargo Act of 1807, which stop mostly all of the trade with foreign nations. This
meant the United States needed things such as tools, parts for newly advanced transportation, and
many other items that people needed to make a living. Samuel Salter saw that the US was needing
change, so he constructed in first British style textile factory in the United States, which was in Rhode
Island. This was booming thing in America because it opened up many jobs. Not only did it open up
jobs, these jobs paid at least two times the amount as a farming job. The formation of the factory and
Industrialization in the United States created something new and far between, the Middling class. The
middle class were the people that were neither rich nor poor. Though the Embargo Act and the War of
1812 were mainly focused on in this essay, there are many other things that caused the Industrial
Revolution. The Embargo Act of 1807 sparked the War of 1812, which sparked the beginning of a
period that would change the world forever. The period of Industrialization in the United States of
America was the greatest thing the country has ever seen. The Industrial revolution worked toward
and even created many new ways of transportation. Many different forms of technology were created
to make the working man s life easier.

The ability to do anything effectively is through knowledge of the different tools to do the task, and
which tool would be most effective. Persuading an audience with an advertisement is no different. The
goal of an advertisement is for viewers to purchase a product or learn about a subject. An
advertisement is considered effective when the targeted audience is persuaded to take the action that
the advertisement is suggesting. An advertisement by the Sandy Hook Promise, Evan, focuses on a
boy in high school. The advertisement shows him exchanging messages on a desk with an unknown

The study surveyed participants attitudes towards organizations after watching advertisements by
organizations. The advertisements varied in levels of guilt evoked. The purpose of the study was to see
how appealing to guilt would influence the effectiveness of the advertisement. What the researchers
found was guilt appeals can have positive effects on behavioral intentions, notably donating behavior
(2007, p. 729). This suggests that when someone feels guilty, they want to get rid of the guilt and
believe that they can do so through their own actions and help society. Even though the study is
focused on donations, the concept regarding an advertisement s effectiveness is the same. Donating
money is a simple action, since it is sometimes a one time thing people do, and does impose a burden
of time to the donator. Visiting a website is no different because it too is an action that is only taken
once, and is not extremely time consuming. The study also discovered that children s charities are of
high personal importance to the majority of people (Hibbert et al., 2007). This is related to the Sandy
Hook Promise advertisement because when people see the source of the advertisement, Sandy Hook
Promise, they see the organization as one that affects the

The factors looked at such as the profit margin, ROE, and ROA do paint the picture that the current
state of the business is good. Revenues have increased on average 10% each year from 2002 to 2005.
However during this time cash balances have decreased. Accounts receivable and inventory have
increased in the same time span. Cash has decreased from $120.1 to $9.4, a decline of 92% over the

This can be done by generating more revenues or by reducing operating costs. Increasing revenues
seems complicated in an industry that decreased revenues in 2004 by 1.8% and considering that HH
has been aggressively growing for the last years (12.5% in 2004 and 15.5% in 2005). One strategy that
can be pursued at this point is increase prices to improve the margins and decrease the number of units
sold. Although this seems like a good idea the move implies initially an investment in additional
inventory which at this moment and with the given business conditions doesn t seem viable.
Reduction in operating costs looks somehow complicated as well because it is stated in the case that
the business is running efficiently.
Another alternative that the Brown s have to manage HH current situation is to reduce the receivables
days. This seems doable since HH is way above the industry average, 48 days compared to 21.8 for
the industry in 2004. They can also reduce the inventory days in an effort to recover some capital; this
also seems like something that HH should be able to do as they have higher inventory days than the
benchmark, 436.5 versus 386.3 in 2004. The return on assets has been growing on the past years and
is high compared to the benchmark, this is saying that HH is being more efficient every year in the use
of assets; this also says that they might require higher capital expenditures going forward.
