You want to teach your child to read, but before a child can learn to read, he or she must first learn
at least some of the letters in the alphabet, their names, and the sounds that they represent. To be
able to read, a child must be able to recognize the letters, know the sound of the letters, and be able
to recognize the letters quickly and say the sound without hesitation.
There is plenty of discussion and disagreement on whether it's better to teach children using whole
language programs or using methods which incorporate phonics and phonemic awareness
instructions.
I think the debate on this is settled when the National Reading Panel stated from their findings of
reviewing over 1,900 studies that phonics and phonemic awareness produces superior reading
results than whole language programs.
National PTA and Kindle are renewing their commitment to support increased family engagement in literacy efforts. This webinar provides an overview of the 50 Classrooms of Kindles donation, the Family Reading Experience, and a sneak peek at the Summer Reading Challenge National PTA will launch in 2015.

Mother Tongue-Based Bilingual Education and Concept Formation in Children in ...ijtsrd
This study aimed at investigating mother tongue-based bilingual education and concept formation of children in Bafut in the North West Region of Cameroon. A quasi-experimental design was adopted whereby 20 male and female children were purposefully selected for the study. An adapted version of the Mayer and Mayer 1975 picture description task, a language comprehension test, as well as a sociolinguistic Questionnaire were used to measure the language proficiency of participants. Both the bilingual and monolingual samples were administered the symbol substitution task, the Dimension Change Card Sort DCCS , Test of Linear measurement and object classification task to measure their concept formation abilities. Data were analyzed using a pre-designed EpiData Version 3.1, SPSS version 21.0, Mann-Whitney U test and Spearmans Rho correlation test. Results indicate that there was no bilingual advantage in the various tasks. The main explanation for no bilingual advantage lies in the fact that a predominantly subtractive bilingual sample was used. Recommendations were made to stake holders, as well as suggestions for further research and conclusion. Phonological awareness is a listening and oral language skill that does not involve print. It is the ability to hear and produce the individual sounds heard within words. The early stages of phonological awareness emerge when babies and toddlers mimic sounds heard to say their first words. It is an essential skill because it sets the foundation for phonics - the ability to match sounds to their
correct letter or letter patterns to read words.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
