Phased array antennas contain multiple antenna elements that can each have their phase and amplitude controlled individually. This allows the beam direction and pattern of the overall antenna to be steered electronically without mechanical movement. Phased array antennas are used where rapid target tracking is required, such as in communications, direction finding, weather research, and military applications like with the Army. They provide an advantage over mechanically steered antennas by allowing electronic beam steering without inertial limitations.
