Joker and Batman Essay
Batman (originally referred to as the Bat Man and still sometimes as the Batman) is a DC
Comics fictional superhero who first appeared in Detective Comics #27 in May 1939. He has
since become, along with Superman and Spider Man, one of the world s most recognized
superheroes.[1] Batman was co created by artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger, although only
Kane receives official credit for the character. Batmans secret identity is Bruce Wayne, billionaire
industrialist, playboy, and philanthropist. Witnessing the murder of his parents as a child leads him
to train himself to the peak of physical and intellectual perfection, don a costume, and fight crime.
Unlike most superheroes, he does not possess any superhuman powers or abilities; he... Show more

Finger, like Joe Shuster, Jerry Siegel, and some other creators during and after the Golden Age
of Comic Books, would resent National s denying him the money and credit that, he felt, he was
owed for his creations. At the time of Finger s death, in 1974, he had not been officially credited
as a co creator of the character. Kane himself, however, in later years willingly acknowledged
Finger s contributions to the character while also insisting on his own role. [5]
[edit] Early years (1939 1949) Batman debuted in Detective Comics #27 (May 1939)The first
Batman story, The Case of the Chemical Syndicate, appeared in Detective Comics #27, cover
dated May 1939. Finger wrote the first Batman strip and Kane provided the art. Finger said,
Batman was originally written in the style of the pulps [6] and this influence was evident with
Batman showing little remorse over killing or maiming criminals. The Bat Man was a breakout
hit, with sales on Detective Comics soaring to the point that the character was given his own title
in 1940. By that time National was the top selling and most influential publisher in the industry,
and Batman and National s other major hero Superman were the cornerstones of the company s
success.[7] The two characters were featured side by side as the stars of World s Finest Comics,
which was originally titled World s Best Comics when it debuted in fall 1940. Creators including

The Impact Of Zombies On Society
In the modern world, media outlets and pop culture constantly revive the idea of zombies taking
over human society. From The Walking Dead to Michael Jackson s Thriller, zombies are
portrayed as slow moving living dead creatures shown in mass amounts to create the idea of
consumption. While this monster as it is depicted in movies and television shows is nonexistent,
there are living zombies walking the surface every day. They hide in the shadows of town and
often only wear the clothes on their back. They spend every day trying to survive with the little
amount of money they can scavenge. Money to them acts as the cure to help them get the
necessary resources they need. Many people in this nation and across the world are categorized as
living under the povertyline. The spectrum of people ranges from homeless and sleeping on the
streets to large families settling in garage sized apartments. Even when taking out of consideration
the similarities in physical appearance, zombies are an accurate representation of the major issue of
poverty in today s society due to the instant eeriness that the stereotypes of both subjects represent
and the idea that the poor are unable to receive the necessary health treatments.
The way higher income families degrade the poor or even the lack of support given to help is
mainly due to the negative stereotypes that are placed on social status. In the article Monsters and
Messiahs, UC Riverside professor Mike Davis examines how and why

A Defining Moment Essay
Many people influenced and events my reading and writing development throughout my childhood
from my mother, my elementary librarian, and Sesame Street, to getting my first pair of glasses.
We all have defining moments in our lives where we can look back and say, That moment
changed my life. This is the story of the defining moment that changed the way I read and write,
and I learned it from a whale!
It was the beginning of my seventh grade year. I was about twelve years old and, I guess you could
say a nerd. I did well in school so I was placed in the Gifted and Talented program with other nerds
in my class. As part of this program we were required to read at a certain level or read a certain
number of books each semester. You... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I thought to myself, hey, I like whales. I ve read stories about ships and pirates and stuff before.
This looks like something I might like. I can still smell the old paper and threaded binding
resonating in my mind as I opened the book and scrolled through the pages, soaking in the vibrant
illustrations of what would soon become my obsession for the next six months.
Happy with my selection and feeling fairly proud of myself, I take the book to the check out desk.
The desk is occupied by the stereotypical librarian. She is an older lady probably in her sixties with
gray wiry hair and half square bi focal glasses that sit on the end of her nose. As I place the book
on the counter, she looks down her nose and through her glasses at me with a look of skepticism.
Frowning as she speaks, she tells me that maybe I should choose something else. Undaunted, I
refuse and ask to check out the book. She gives a few other suggestions but again, I refuse. She
wishes me luck as she slides it back to me and I stuff the hefty book into my backpack.
I start reading the book and right away it is intimidating from the very first paragraph. I am faced
with language and sentence structure I do not understand, what is a bedfellow and why does he
carry a purse? Is he gay? Immediately I am second guessing my decision but I am determined to
get through this book. It takes me the better part of a week to get through the first chapter. I

Essay Fiber Optics
Fiber Optics
What are Fiber Optics?
Fiber optics are thin transparent fibers of glass or plastic enclosed by a material of a lower index
of refraction and that transmit light throughout their length by internal reflections. Real fiber optic
cables are made out of very pure glass, glass so pure that if it were miles thick, light would still be
able to pass through. The fiber optic strand, although thin in diameter, is stretched to miles in length.
Therefore only the purest of glass would be efficient and useful for sending light signals. The
glass of these fiber optic cables is drawn into a very thin strand (as thin as human hair), then it is
coated in two layers of plastic. By coating the glass in plastic (this is called the ... Show more

Single Mode cable is a single strand of glass fiber, while multimode cable is made of multiple
strands of glass fibers. Each fiber in multimode cable is capable of carrying a different signal
independent from those on the other fibers in the cable bundle.
Light pulses beam into the fiber s core with an LED (light emitting diode), or laser and these
signals are sent over miles and miles. However, the signal over time will begin to weaken. In order
o maintain the signal over great distances, there are repeater stations at about every 40 to 60 miles
that retransmit these light signalsto ensure the signal reaches its destination.
Because light is being used, large amounts of data can be sent at an extremely rapid speed(at the
speed of light). Modern day fiber systems can transmit billions of bits per second with a single
laser. This can be achieved by the the laser can turn on and off billions of times per second, which
would allow for such a high transmission rate. In addition to high rate of transmission, the newest
systems increase the number of signals that can be transmitted into each fiber by utiliizing multiple
lasers with different colors. The increased data carrying ability and cost savings potential that fiber
optics possesses over copper wire cable has already changed the communications and holds many
promises for the future of information technology.

Dietary Guidelines For The Diet And Chronic Disease Essay
This article was to examine how the US government uses dietary guidelines for Americans and
how the guidelines were supposed to help us eat and stay healthy. Diet and chronic diseases are
sometimes connected. For example, it is proven that nutrient deficiency disease like scurvy can be
cured by consuming the lost nutrients. However, it is also shown that some nutrient exposure can
cause chronic illness such as energy, fats, sodium dietary fiber, and food exposures, etc. making it
difficult to set dietary guidelines. In addition to some nutrient causing chronic diseases, nondietary
factors such as stress, lack of exercise, smoking and other environmental factors are linked to
causing chronic illnesses (Slavin, 2012).
The relationship between diet and chronic disease made the federal government to issue dietary
guidelines for Americans since1980 and publication of dietary guidelines were made every five
years. The dietary guideline is in response to the public s desire for authoritative, consistent
guidelines on diet and health (Slavin, 2012). One of the reasons for developing the dietary
guidelines was to provide science based advice for two years old or older to help prevent chronic
diseases and promote health. Another reason why dietary guidelines were created was to lay a good
foundation for federal nutrition programs and nutrition education programs and serve as a basis for
research gaps and priorities (Slavin, 2012). Also, the government wants to make sure the

Why Writing Is Important To Me
I do not think of myself as a very good writer. I feel that my writing is always scrambled, and
doesn t quite flow like it should. I do like to write however, if the subject interests me. I would
much rather write about a topic that I know a lot about, and care about. If I was to write a paper
about dragons, it most likely would not be written very well because I don t care about that
subject. I like to write because it is something that I think can be fun. It also is a great way to
express yourself in words. A memorable writingassignment would be the DAR paperthat I wrote in
fifth grade. DAR stands for Daughters of the American Revolution. DAR is a history writing
competition. You write about an assigned topic or time period and you make up a story that later
gets judged. One of the reasons that this specific writing assignment was so memorable to me is
because I think that it was one of the best papers that I... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
My writing never seems to go together like it should. To me almost all of my writing seems
weak. I always think that there is a lot more that I could have fixed. My writing would be so
much better if I knew what exactly it is that I want to change and how to change it. One of the
main reasons that I think my writing assignments aren t very good is because they aren t very
creative. Even though I think that my weaknesses outweigh my strengths I do have some
strengths. Some of these would be that I can easily follow the rubric and can usually get a good
grade on my papers. I also think that I am pretty good at the grammar and spelling part of writing
assignments. One of my goals this year is to become a more confident writer. If I could think that I
am a good writer, it will probably show in my writing pieces. I would also like to work on showing
voice in my papers. Some of the goals that I have as a writer in my life would be to learn to like my
writing, and to become a better

Rayleigh BпїЅnard Fargination Problem
Rayleigh BГ©nard convection problem involves an unstable temperature gradient driving the pertur
bations to grow for a single fluid or even a mixture of fluids without phase transformation. However,
when the mixture of fluids involve phase transformation, apart from the cooling experienced by the
parcel as it relaxes to the temperature of its surrounding, it also experiences the latent heatrelease or
absorption associated with the phase transformation. Troposphere, the convectiondominated regime
of the atmosphere, has a temperature gradient of 70 K from 288 K at the surface to 222
K at the tropopause and the pressure also decreases exponentially with an e folding height of 7.64
km the combined effect of both pressure and temperature implies the phase transformation of the
water vapor. A rising parcel of air can have phase transformation of water vapor to liquid droplets
and ice particles, and further, the liquid droplets and ice particles can also transform back to the
vapor form. One would expect the effect of phase transformation can be captured as a source/sink
term in the energy equation, but the intricacy of the system is furthered by the momentum driving
characteristic of the moisture present in the atmosphere.
**Buckingham Pi analysis of a moist system reveals two additional dimensionless numbers, Ra v
and Le apart from Ra T , P r and Re, appearing in a single phase natural convection problem. The
dimensionless parameters are Lewis number (Le), Prandtl number(P r), moisture driven Rayleigh
number (Ra v ), analogous to thermally driven Rayleigh number(Ra T ) and Reynolds number(Re).
Of these 5 dimensionless numbers, Le and P r capture the properties of the fluid, Ra T and Ra v
represents the surrounding conditions and Re represents the nature of resulting flow.**
In atmosphere owing to the wide variety of processes and further limited by our measurement
capabilities, phenomena at fine ranges are not always captured. And MTU О chamber facilitates to
the investigation of this complex problem by a well controlled environment. A relevant example for
our is the isolation entrainment associated with the turbulence, thus ensuring the isomorphic nature
of dry and moist convection. To investigate the

Symbolism Of A Butterfly In The Holocaust
The butterfly has become a symbol for the 1.5 million children murdered in the holocaust. During
the holocaust many children were put into concentration camps, they knew they were going to die.
They carved hundreds of butterflies with their nails or stones on the walls of the prisons. I believe
these butterflies represented their souls. They had a meaning. The butterflies were supposedly a
message of hope, that despite the fact that they would be dead before long, their souls would not
die. Just like how a larva turns out into a butterflyan flies out of the cocoon, similar once they die,
they would completely come out of their suffering and hardships and once again live life in peace
and freedom. A butterfly is so awakening and charming which

Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson
From the violent and brutal clash between Indians [1], and British colonists in Massachusetts during
King Philip s War (1675 6) grew a new literary genre. After their redemption, some colonists who
had been prisoners of the Indians wrote autobiographical accounts of their experiences. These
captivity narratives developed a large audience, and interest in the narratives continued into the
nineteenth century.[2] After her capture and redemption, Mary Rowlandsonpublished what some
historians call America s first best seller, entitled Narrative Of the Captivity and Restoratio;t of

Betrayal in Maus Essay
During World War II and the Holocaust, there was not only mistrust for the government but there
was also plenty of mistrust for prior friends and neighbors. In the graphic novel, Maus (Volume I
and II) Vladek Spiegelman makes it very clear to his son, Artie, that one cannot count on their
friends. He makes the point that in time of hardship, friends will abandon you quite quickly.
Vladek says, Friends? Your friends...if you lock them together in a room with no food for a
week...then you could see what it is, friends! (Maus, VI. 5 6). Throughout the novel, we see
examples of this gloomy point proven repeatedly. In the first volume of the novel, Haskel, a cousin

The Spiegelman family and their comrades were trying to be compassionate and help someone
that they identified with, someone who, through a shared desperate situation (or so they
thought) they tried to befriend. Unfortunately, he was so quick to turn his back on the people
who had treated him so kindly. Yet again, it becomes evident that no one can be trusted when the
prisoners are being marched from the concentration camp due to the Nazis fear that the United
States and allies soon would discover their operation. The Jewish prisoners arrange a plan with
some of the German guards marching alongside them. The prisoners pay the guards with the
agreement that when they try to run the German soldiers will fire over their heads and not kill
them. When the time came to run, the prisoners break away from the pack and start towards the
woods, however, the same soldiers that promised not to shoot them shot them in the back as they
ran (Maus V II 82 83). The Germans that were supposed to be the friends of the Jews and help
them escape took their gold and did not hesitate to shoot them in the back as they ran. Fortunately,
for everyone s sake, not everyone was only out to save himself or herself. In contrast to the many
examples where betrayal was the norm there are several examples of friends who were genuine and
helped to make the situation better for someone even they could not make it better

The Sherlock Holmes By Dr. James Watson
One of the things that make the Sherlock Holmes books distinctive is their point of view. The
books are written as an account Sherlock Holmes case, written by Dr. James Watson,
chronicling the achievements of the detective. This book, in particular, is unique in its point of
view. The first few chapters are told in past tense, as Watson recalls the events; the next few
chapters are present tense, in the form of extracts from Watson s diary or letters sent to Holmes
from the hall; the last few chapters shift back to past tense recollections. Having Watson tell the
tale instead of Holmes was a compelling choice. Holmes, with his straightforward logical mind,
would have been unable to provide the imagery that Watson did. Watson, who has more of an
artistic flair, was able to beautifully describe the disturbing way the fog rolled on the moor, or
how the Hall at night was desolate and gloomy. Holmes would have only given a bare boned
factual account of events; none of the dramatic scenes emotional description gifted by Watson.
Furthermore, having Watson tell the tale makes Holmes methods seem more enigmatic as the
perspective is not from inside Holmes head. Having this veil of mystery around the techniques
Holmes uses makes him seem more impressive and worthy of the reader s respect. Watson s
perspective also enabled the reader to discover clues and unravel the case along with him. Watson
began the case and went to Dartmoor without any idea of who caused Sir Charles death,

Hyperthyroidism Occurs When The Thyroid Gland
Hyperthyroid Disease Hyperthyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland, a butterfly shape in front of
the neck, overproduces thyroid hormone. The thyroid gland is abundant with blood vessels and it
secretes thyroid hormone (Kumar 22). Thyroid hormone influences many different internal body
functions such as, metabolism, growth, development, turning food into energy, and increases body
temperature. Thyroidhormone is very important for brain development and normal growth during
infancy; furthermore, a newborn s blood drawn from their heel and sent for screening determines of
level of thyroid stimulating hormone (Samuels 2). However, when the thyroid gland over produces
thyroid hormonea lot of things in the body development can go wrong. The over produced thyroid
hormone forces the body to expedite. It is important to know that one has hyperthyroidism, because
it can result in heart, bone problems, and thyroid storm; which heart rate, blood pressure, and the
increase in body temperature can be fatal. Hyperthyroidism is more common in females than males
and the older a person is the more likely they will have it. Around 27 millions of American have
thyroid disease, however only 14 million receive treatment. Also, stress is the main aspect that
affects the thyroid gland in either over producing or under producing thyroid hormone (Kumar 22).

The Correlation Between Two Hardships
Imagine your older sister was just diagnosed with Leukemia. How does that make you feel? How
do you think she feels? I wanted to research the thoughts and feelings someone who has cancer
might go through. From the research, I found depression to play a big role in the outcome of the
patient s therapies and quality of life with cancer. In fact, a study shows there is a direct
correlation between the two, which is quite fascinating; it amazes me how the brain, the body,
and the unconscious mind work together. This topic hits home when it comes to cancer. Sadly,
we have all lost someone to the deadly disease or know someone who is battling it right now. I ve
always wondered what my loved one might be feeling. Do they believe they can fight cancerous
cells or will they succumb to the illness and fall into depression? I find it upsetting to see the second
choice happen, but what if there was something we could do? These questions lead me to research
the correlation between two hardships: cancer and depression. In the event of being diagnosed with
cancer, one may experience many emotions, from anger to hatred, or sadness to even the feeling of
guilt. Along with emotional strain, a patient will experience treatments and therapies to help fight
the cancerous cells. The type of treatment cancer patients receive has multiple side effects,
including depression as a dominant effect. From these two different yet relatively relatable
conditions, many clinical trials

St. Joseph s Day Altar
Italian Americans, especially Sicilians, celebrate St. Joseph s Day, since he is regarded as a
patron saint. Joseph (San Giuseppe) is believed to protect the family, and the poor or otherwise ill
fated. That s why large feasts, at time accommodating somewhere around 100 people, are typically
held on March 19 in his honor, though honor is clearly shown to more than Joseph.
The altar is usually built inside the hostess s (altar makers ) home, usually in the living room.
The everyday altars are normally permeant and out of the way and subtle and simplistic. The St.
Joseph s Day altar however is made to draw the eye and adorned with food. The altar consists of
many different foods and lots of sweets. There are some general aspects in the decorating for the
altar, but the details can vary widely from home to home. Offerings are made about everything for
health to money to the general protection of the family.
The day before the feast, the men are given their one culinary task of spaghetti, gravy, eggs and
sauce, with ingredients made up by the woman. This is usually done within a garage or tent, the
woman checking in or even supervising. This is one of the few task the men have due to the event
mostly being managed by the women, on the day of as well as long before the day arrives. The
authors point out the men often remarking they having nothing to do for the most part until this
point.

Body Paragraphs In Lord Of The Flies
Body paragraphs: Transgression of Man Golding starts off his story with a civilized society
which slowly descends into savagery and tyranny. For instance, Ralph and Jack are utterly
ashamed of not knowing how to build a fire in the beginning of the story because as leaders, they
are responsible for the others who follow them. This shows that a sense of responsibility, a sign of
a civil school of thought, is present in the minds of Jack and Ralph. At this moment, both of the
boys feel embarrassed for being incompetent and not living up to the expectations of their
followers. This reassures the reader of the presence of civilization. As time progresses, a drastic
change in the entire group can be observed. Starting with the hunters, barbarism... Show more

Golding uses Simon as a Christ figure as he journeys the inner depths of human nature, discovers
enlightenment on top of the mountain and as he is finally, brutally murdered by his peers.
Golding also creates a conflicted hero who single handedly makes a final stand against an army
of barbarians and gains enlightenment during this battle. He fought for nobility, survival and
the fallen and gained a greater understanding about how this universe works and what makes it
tick, only this one received the boon from drops of blood and at the point of a spear, in the heat
of battle. Here, we see Ralph become comparable to pre existing legends. Like Ralph, Publius
Horatius Cocles, a Roman soldier who, along with two veteran generals, allowed for the Roman
Army to pass across the Tiber while keeping the invading army of Lars Porsena, king of Clusium
at bay. When the going got tough, and their defensive gear began to be rendered useless by the
continuous blows of the enemy, the two generals retreated but Horatius was to protect Rome
and his comrades, so he stood his ground and kept fighting an entire army by himself. Dionysus
goes on to say, ... The enemy view of him as a madman determined to commit suicide taking
them with him protected him to some extent, as did his taking refuge behind the pile of slain...
To this day, the man is praised for his feats and is also often referred to as a demigod: a Son of
Mars. Ralph can also be compared to Parshuram, an ancient aryan priest who took up warfare and

How Global Economic Environment is affecting International Marketers? By Md. Jafar Sadique,

International business is taking different shades and is unavoidable today. This dynamic world is
rapidly changing to the extent that is has been reduced to a Global village .

Over the years, many banks in the US started the practice of offering home loans to high risk
individuals, i.e., individuals who had a high probability of defaulting on their loans. The banks
justified this move by saying that even if these individuals defaulted on their loans, the amount
could be recovered by selling off the property in question.
Over a period of time, many of these individuals defaulted on their payments, as was expected,
and the banks put the properties back on the market. However, when so many properties were put
on sale at the same time, the property prices, which were already over inflated to begin with,
plummeted. The unprecedented drop in property rates proved fatal for banks that had already
invested most of their money in these speculative deals, and they were forced to close down.
The collapse of these banks is just one of the indicative causes of the present recession. The roots
of this recession can be said to lie in over inflated property prices, oil prices, and commodity
prices. Artificially inflated prices are typical of a profitable market. When the market is doing
well, the sellers eventually become greedy and raise the prices. All is well, as long as the buyers
continue to be able to afford the inflated prices. However, the day the prices reach a level where
the majority of the buyers cannot afford them, a crash in the prices, and consequently a recession, is
inevitable.
3. Present Global Economic Environment:
The year 2008

Similarities And Differences Between Gilgamesh And Achilles
Each mythological hero by all accounts seems to be on a quest searching for what he desire most
on the planet. The same can be said for the two heroes I chose, Gilgamesh and Achilles. Gilgamesh
s greatest fear was dying, while Achilles fear was his legacy lost and overlooked. Although their
wishes differ, their quest share numerous similarities. In the end it all comes down to the same
thing. Both Gilgamesh and Achilleswanted immortality regardless of anything else, but each in his
own particular manner. In spite of the fact that immortality has a different meaning for Gilgamesh,
as it does for Achilles, each choice and additionally every one of the sacrifices they make, all
depend on their fear of dying and death. Both Gilgamesh and Achilles actions showed insight into
their cultures. It somewhat proved an answer to the way they did things and why they.
First, Gilgamesh and Achilles are two epic heroes who share some differences. Among the
differences there are also some similarities. Achilles and Gilgamesh were to a great degree
different with respect to their identity and how they reacted to death. Achilles was a warrior and
Gilgamesh was a ruler, each all around respected and feared in their role. They both demonstrated
fearlessness and toughness in their parts, yet their responses to the passing of their best friend
varied greatly. Combined Achilles and Gilgamesh participated in many battles, as discussed in
Homer s Iliad and the Mesopotamian Epic of Gilgamesh .

How Did Steam Engines Change People s Lives
Steam engines were invented on February 21, 1804 by Richard Trevithick. The locomotives use
steam as a power source. These locomotives use combustible material such as coal, wood, and oil
as fuel. Water and fuel supplies are usually on the locomotive or in a trailer behind it. Steam
engines were first invented in great britain in the 19th century. It was mostly used for railroad
transport until about halfway through the 20th century. In this paper I will explain the history of
steam locomotives and how they changed people s lives and America as a whole. One great

killing her sons without hesitation or lament. She demands to be feared rather than pitied and does
not hesitate to do what she feels she must in order to right the wrongs against her.
The Chorus Seneca s chorus is objective and does not hesitate in condemning the actions they are
witnessing. This is fine because Medea does not need their sympathy or permission, she is a
woman who makes things happen and does not rely on the gods.
Jason
In my opinion Jason takes the feminine role in the play. He comes across as rather weak and
helpless allowing the fates to dictate his course rather than fighting. He is also too willing to try to
help Medea and to trust her, when she pretends to have a change of heart. Also the fact that at the
end of the play he laments to the gods able why they allow such things to happen, rather than
vowing to avenge his son s deaths, confirms to me that he has taken the feminine role in the play.

Sleep Deprivation and Reduction, Sleep Disorders, and the...
It is important for everyone to get enough sleep, but many people often ignore it. If people do
not get enough sleep they may experience sleep deprivation. Sleep deprivation can have
negative effects. When people do not get enough sleep or less, they may feel crabby and unable
to function as well as they usually do the next day. Balancing work and parenting as a single
parent in today s society is tough. Juggling children, work, taking care of home, and cart the
children to extracurricular activities are a lot for one s plate. As single parent I had my share of
sleepless nights as well, mostly when either my children fall sick or when I work extra shift at

Pros And Cons Of The Removal Of Confederate Monuments
The removal of the Confederate soldier monuments and memorials, such as the Robert E. Lee
statue, and the Confederate Soldiers Monument in Tampa, Florida are sparking massive debates
across the nation. Southern communities such as Virginia and South Carolina are being pressured
by citizens into removing the Confederate monuments in the town square, claiming that the
monuments are a brutal reminder of America s history of slavery. Despite the monuments
representation of American history, this is a national debate. Inn some states this has emerged into
a deadly conflict in the streets, due to the violent protests and riots in the town square.

The Cask Of Amontillado By Edgar Allen Poe
Edgar Allen Poe sets the story in Italy during the rise of the Freemasons. As thinkers and
specialists began to enter the stonemason guilds, they saw a need for the creation of exclusive
social clubs. These social clubs provided members with access to other members with similar
ideologies. These ideas lead to networking that would enable members to share personal
networking such as financial, political, and social ties. As the social clubs grew, they eventually
formed Freemasonry. With a secure network, the Masons would be able to challenge the power of
the aristocratic families. The masons would support the revolutions that would lead to democracy.

The black clothing Montresor wears tells two stories of the character. The image he projects is a
calm and disciplined persona that lacks impulsive behaviors (Stepp 451). The clothing and black
mask also give off the appearance of a defacto executioner accompanying his victim on his last walk
(Platizky 207). In the end, Montresor s upbringing in the old money class of the elite has shaped his
view of the world. Just as Montresor was constructed to be calm and decisive, Fortunato is portrayed
as impulsive and immature. At the beginning of the story, Fortunato is introduced wearing a motley
outfit. Fortunato s outfit brilliantly represents his personality and how he is viewed by the
aristocratic families of the time (Whatley 56,58). The costume builds the idea in the reader s mind
that Fortunato is the exact opposite of Montresor. This opposite effect is shown through many
variations throughout the story. First, Fortunato inadvertently insults Montresor when he admits
that he has forgotten the Montresor family crest and motto (Stepp 447, 449). While his ignorance is
not the reason for the revenge, it lets Poe depict Fortunato s naivety (White 551). Secondly,
Fortunato s ego is on display during the walk to his demise when Fortunato is informed that Luchesi
will be the one to get to test the authenticity of the Amontillado (Poe 209). This information brings
out Fortunato s ego. Fortunato believes

This is a comparative analytical paper that will analyze selected financial ratios for Nike Inc. and
Armour Inc. The paper will also discuss the implications of the ratios on the overall business
performances for each entity. Financial ratios, in this case, will act as performance metrics for
different business operations. The ratios indicate the actual financial and performance health of
any business at a particular time. The earnings per share of the common stock is a financial metric
for a business net income believed to be available to reward the common stock shareholders. The
ratiois usually calculated by dividing the difference between the net after tax profits and
dividends attributed to preferred shareholders with the average number of outstanding common
shares. Significantly higher earnings per share imply that the business is capable of paying
reasonable dividends to the common shareholders while a low ratio indicates a reduced ability
for the entity to declare and pay reasonable dividends to its common shareholders. From the
comparison, Nike has a higher EPS ratio at 1.05 compared to 0.98 for Under Armour. This implies
that Nike is performing better than Under Armour and that Nike could be either making increasing

living on campus. There are many resources throughout the University that make it possible for
students that do not have a car, to get around. The highly organized and preferred transportation is
the campus shuttles that go around to every dorm village and pick up students to bring them to the

On the FGCU website, there is a section called Transportation that shows all of the opportunities
students get to utilize. If not the shuttles, there is carpooling, bicycle rentals, and car rentals that are
offered to students 18 years and up. Campus shuttles are used by the majority of FGCU students
that live on campus. These shuttles are made so that students can have transportation other than

The Inter relationship between pathways to drug discovery, drug development and drug
manufacturing
When it comes to small molecule drugs specifically, the journey to eventually becoming an
approved and marketed drug ready for the public is an exhausting and comprehensive odyssey
which involves the following components: basic research, finding the medicine, initial testing,
complex clinical trials involving human beings and then eventually hard sought after approval by
the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) (Corr Williams, 2009). On average, the process
generally takes a decade to a decade and a half, millions upon millions of dollars and the most
ideal circumstances before the drug is approved this overall reason attributes to why drug
discovery and development is one of the drug discovery and development is widely recognized
as one of the most financially risky endeavors in all of science and a major challenge for the
biomedical industry. Much of this cost comes from failures, which account for 75 percent of the
total research and development costs (Corr Williams, 2009). Corr and Williams are wise to
point out that despite the fact that these failures are expensive and can chip away at morale, they
still add to a collective body of knowledge on the process of disease: this knowledge is gained from
carrying out research and clinical trials, even ones that fail (2009). One could even argue that the
path to approval for biologics is even more arduous because they

Absorption
Alcohol is absorbed from all parts of the gastrointestinal tract largely by simple diffusion into the
blood. However the small intestine is by far the most efficient region of the gastrointestinal tract
for alcohol absorption because of its very large surface area. In a fasting individual, it is generally
agreed that 10% to 20% of a dose of alcohol is absorbed from the stomach (the volume of alcohol
affects the absorption) and 75% to 80% is absorbed from the small ... Show more content on

Alcohol Content
It s not how many drinks that you have, but how much alcohol that you consume. The concentration
of the drinks that one ingest can have a slight effect on the peak alcohol concentration due to the
differences in absorption rate of different concentrations of alcohol. Alcohol is most rapidly
absorbed when the concentration of the drink is between 10% and 30%. Below 10% the
concentration gradient in the gastrointestinal tract is low and slows absorption and the added
volumes of liquid involved slow gastric emptying. On the other hand concentrations higher than
30% tend to irritate the mucous membranes of the gastrointestinal tract and the pyloric sphincter,
causing increased secretion of mucous and delayed gastric emptying.
Food
Food taken along with alcohol results in a lower, delayed blood alcohol concentration peak (the
point of greatest intoxication). There are two major factors involved in this phenomenon.
First, because alcohol is absorbed most efficiently in the small intestine, the ingestion of food can
slow down the absorption of alcohol into one s system. The pyloric valve at the bottom of the
stomach will close in order to hold food in the stomach for digestion and thus keep the alcohol from
reaching the small intestine.

Information Security Awareness Among Privileged Users of a Company
Information is the backbone of every organization and the need to aptly manage and control the
security of information is necessary for its sustainability (Kerry Lynn Rossouw, 2004). Few
employees have elevated rights on organization provided work PCs, which allow them to install or
modify applications without consent. Such actions which are against the organization s information
security policies may lead to information security breach. Typically, the employee thinks they are
insusceptible to security attacks and an awareness is needed to prevent it. I worked as an IT
Analyst for a multinational construction company. While my job role was to provide IT
solutions for the assembly line and troubleshoot the issues, I have had a fair experience of
dealing with IT related problems for users. Especially with the users who have no prior
experience in the field of IT. Users were provided with administrative rights local to their work
PCs to run the business application. This further allowed them to install noncompliant software
for their personal use. In one such incident, a user installed a malware inadvertently and hundreds
of work PCs were affected which were on the same network. The production of the assembly line
was stopped for a few hours and company had to incur the loss. Employees should realize that they

And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die. (Gen 3:4) The demon like traits of

Garden of Eden that tempts Eve into eating the forbidden fruit. Similarly, the goblin men used
their fruit to possess Laura into a trance. As Laura is lured by the goblins to purchase the fruit,
she expresses to them that she has no copper or silver coins to pay for the tender fruit. However,
the goblins negotiate that only a precious golden lock from Laura s head serves as an alternate

Romantic love may be around every corner whether between an old couple or a young teenage

difficult thing to actually have a person s hands on.
Most people nowadays will yearn for something more commonly known as true love. True love

someone we love to a certain degree that we feel happy, complete, and contented.
The definition may be thrown out there in whatever way, but meeting eye to eye with said true love

classmates, all of them waiting for the sunto come out again. 7 years ago was the sun s last
appearance, and the children on Venus eagerly wait for the sun to show itself one more time.
However, they don t entirely remember what the sun is like, except for shy little Margot for
whom the other children all hate and ignore. When Margot describes to them what the sun is like,
they don t believe her and think she is just making it all up. This is because Margot s different, for
she lived on Earth 5 years ago and still actually remembers the sun and its beautiful presence and
warmth. Unfortunately, the other children on Venus hate her for that, for they never got to
experience what Margot has experienced. Unlike Margot, they have lived on Venus their whole
lives. Due to Margot s prior experiences on Earth, the children on Venus act negatively and jealous
towards her. This major theme can be shown through denial, depression, and harassment.
One way the children on Venus act jealous towards Margot is that deny her beliefs about the sun
and think that she is making it all up. Ray Bradbury shows this when he writes, It s like a penny
she said once, eyes closed. No it s not! the children cried.

Examples Of Proactive Personality Construct
The proactive personality construct was introduced by Bateman and Crant (1993) who defined it as
a relatively stable tendency to effect environmental change (p. 107). Since that time proactive
personality has emerged as a heuristic construct in organizational settings, showing significant
relationships with such variables as job performance, career success, and leadership quality (e.g.,
Crant Bateman, 2000; Crant, 1995; Seibert et al., 1999; Thompson, 2005).
Proactive personality is most frequently measured by Bateman and Crant s (1993) scale. The
internal consistency of this scale ranged from .83 to .89 across three college student samples. The
construct validity of Bateman and Crant s (1993) 17 item proactive personality scale was tested in
relation to other personality constructs, such as conscientiousness (r = .43,p .01) and social
desirability (r = .004,n.s.). In order to test for criterion validity, Bateman and Crant (1993)
correlated their measure with several criteria including, extra curricular activities aimed at

Employees with this disposition tend to perceive opportunities for positive changes in the
workplace and then actively work to bring about these changes (Bateman Crant, 1993; Grant
Ashford, 2008). Proactive employees demonstrate initiation, perceive their work roles more
broadly, take active steps to get work done, initiate changes, follow through until completion, and
subsequently perform well at work; hence, proactive personality has been linked to a number of
positive work outcomes (see Crant Bateman, 2000; Crant, 1995; Seibert et al., 1999; Thompson,
2005), which makes proactive employees desirable to their organizations. Crant (1995) noted that
proactive personality is a potentially useful tool for selection due to its strong relationship with job
performance, making it a valid

Experiential Family Therapy
Experiential family therapy (EFT) was first developed in the 1960 s by physician and
psychotherapy pioneer Carl Whitaker and is aimed at helping individual family members feel
fulfilled and self actualized within the family unit by means of improving cooperation and intimacy
among family members. Unlike other schools of familytherapy, EFT does not focus on the
perceived problems of individual family members but examines how family interactions and
communications cause problems for the individual family members. It is important to remember
that, due to the level of interpersonal involvement needed in this style of therapy it requires every
family member involved to fully participate in the process. For optimum effectiveness, the family
should already be relatively stable. /p Whitaker s approach to EFT is known as the symbolic
experiential model. This model emphasizes immediate, here and now experiences rather than the
introspective methods of earlier theories and promotes emotional expression as a medium of shared
experience and as a means of both personal and family fulfillment. Symbolic experiential family
therapyis predicated on the existential idea that there is a great deal more to a family s dynamics
and existence than is empirically observable; unconscious dynamics, histories of shared and
individual experiences, secrets, etc. This model attempts to integrate two different aspects of
human experience; experience and symbols. Experience is what is taken in

The process of making meaning of a text (analysing). The particular interpretations of a text. Types:

Kino s physical and spiritual existence is intimately connected with the natural world. An
important element of the novella is nature imagery. Kino observes the world of his garden in the
opening scene of Chapter 1 and the world of the ocean in Chapter 2. Kino and Juana s final
journey up the mountain takes place on a dark night full of animal noises and cries. Steinbeck
mirrors the human word as he depicts the natural world as a realm. Collectively, the works of
Steinbeck s nature imagery parallels the natural worlds idyllic innocence to that of Kino s at the
beginning of the novella. The natural world described in the novella s darker qualities, at the end
of story, reflect that of the struggle and fight Kino experiences at the novellas end, once greed,
power and wealth had corrupted his soul. For example there was a parallel created between Kino s
relationship to nature and the god s relationship to Kino (he towers over the ants in the same way
that the gods tower over

made him his lover, but he never felt the same way about her he always would think about the

Odysseus since she was the one who saved his life Calypso said to Hermes that Gods are jealous of

easyInternetcafe s Situation
easyInternetcafe was launched in 1999 under the umbrella of the easyGroup. The mission of elc
was to provide consumers with access to the Internet at the lowest cost. Despite the excellent
support and recognition from the public, elc was experiencing adversity of keeping their business
profitable after the Internet Investment bubble burst. The original concept of owning many of the
large stand alone cafes with 250 500 PC terminals at each cafГ© was not working well. elc
undertook a dramatic restructuring of the company by downsizing the cafes. Many of the large,
original stand alone elc stores will be run by franchisees. These franchised stores will become

Yield Management Model Stelios is an enthusiast of Yield Management Model and he applies the
model to his business. According to Wikipedia, yield management is the process of understanding,
anticipating and influencing consumer behavior in order to maximize revenue or profits from a
fixed, perishable resource (such as airline seats or hotel room reservations). Stelios believes that
lowering the price will increase the demands of the customers significantly. By locating all the
large internet cafes in high traffic areas, elc aimed to capture the maximum revenue by providing
internet services with a variety of price points at different points in time (peak hours or off peak
hours). The price for Internet access varies based on demand, raising the price in dollar per hour in
mid afternoon, when stores are nearly full. That gives bargain hunters an incentive to visit in the
non peak hours, when price is dropping. The model is well suited for business with high

States By Edward Said Essay
The essay States, by Edward Said, describes the trouble for Palestinians to find their identity due to
the loss of their homeland. He also describes the situation of the Palestinians and the isolation that
they feel through photographs that he had taken. Said has many different pictures throughout this
essay and each of them play a part in supporting the main point of this essay. Said believes that,
without a homeland, the Palestinians cannot have an identity and the Palestinians should not be
content with being exiles forever. So the purpose of the pictures is to support and further strengthen
this idea. The photographer wants the viewer to understand the struggle that the Palestinians are
going through. To begin, Said is trying to describe... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The second image (18) shows a man and a woman both inside what looks like a respectable
house. However, the captions explains, A village of settled nomads near Beersheba. Some years
ago, these people still lived in a tent, under the desert sky [...] (18). So Said provides this image
to show how people struggle, these people once lived in just a tent in extreme conditions. He
also chose this to show to the reader that this exile treatment happened to everyone no matter
who you are and what your status is. The third image also supports the notion that no matter
which palestinian it was he or she was till oiled and treated no better than the rest (20). The
image shows a man and a woman sitting down in what looks like the living room area of a house.
However, the caption says, A visit to the former mayor of Jerusalem and his wife, in exile in Jordan
(20). So even people of high importance in the Palestine are in exiled and are being treated the
same. This reveals to the reader that no matter who you were you still struggled if you were a
Palestinian exile. The sixth image (25) shows a picture of a tent encampment in what looks like a
very dry desert. The tent looks as if it is either broken or just one side is missing. This picture is
significant because it shows the harsh

Short Trip To The Metropolitan Museum
Museum experience Museum is a magic place for human beings to talk to the greatest artists in the
history regardless of time and space. Visiting a museum is like taking a long walk in the history of
human beings. Artworks are designated to record either the unique thoughts of artists or the
indelible history of a period. A short trip of the Metropolitan Museumbrings me not only the joy of
visiting, but also the decorous feeling of baroque art. It is not surprise that many baroque art is
devoted to demonstrate the majesty and solemnity. Ferdinando de Medici (1663 1713), Grand
Prince of Tuscany ,which is created by Giovanni Battista Foggini, deeply impress me.

  • 2. Joker and Batman Essay Batman (originally referred to as the Bat Man and still sometimes as the Batman) is a DC Comics fictional superhero who first appeared in Detective Comics #27 in May 1939. He has since become, along with Superman and Spider Man, one of the world s most recognized superheroes.[1] Batman was co created by artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger, although only Kane receives official credit for the character. Batmans secret identity is Bruce Wayne, billionaire industrialist, playboy, and philanthropist. Witnessing the murder of his parents as a child leads him to train himself to the peak of physical and intellectual perfection, don a costume, and fight crime. Unlike most superheroes, he does not possess any superhuman powers or abilities; he... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Finger, like Joe Shuster, Jerry Siegel, and some other creators during and after the Golden Age of Comic Books, would resent National s denying him the money and credit that, he felt, he was owed for his creations. At the time of Finger s death, in 1974, he had not been officially credited as a co creator of the character. Kane himself, however, in later years willingly acknowledged Finger s contributions to the character while also insisting on his own role. [5] [edit] Early years (1939 1949) Batman debuted in Detective Comics #27 (May 1939)The first Batman story, The Case of the Chemical Syndicate, appeared in Detective Comics #27, cover dated May 1939. Finger wrote the first Batman strip and Kane provided the art. Finger said, Batman was originally written in the style of the pulps [6] and this influence was evident with Batman showing little remorse over killing or maiming criminals. The Bat Man was a breakout hit, with sales on Detective Comics soaring to the point that the character was given his own title in 1940. By that time National was the top selling and most influential publisher in the industry, and Batman and National s other major hero Superman were the cornerstones of the company s success.[7] The two characters were featured side by side as the stars of World s Finest Comics, which was originally titled World s Best Comics when it debuted in fall 1940. • 3. The Impact Of Zombies On Society In the modern world, media outlets and pop culture constantly revive the idea of zombies taking over human society. From The Walking Dead to Michael Jackson s Thriller, zombies are portrayed as slow moving living dead creatures shown in mass amounts to create the idea of consumption. While this monster as it is depicted in movies and television shows is nonexistent, there are living zombies walking the surface every day. They hide in the shadows of town and often only wear the clothes on their back. They spend every day trying to survive with the little amount of money they can scavenge. Money to them acts as the cure to help them get the necessary resources they need. Many people in this nation and across the world are categorized as living under the povertyline. The spectrum of people ranges from homeless and sleeping on the streets to large families settling in garage sized apartments. Even when taking out of consideration the similarities in physical appearance, zombies are an accurate representation of the major issue of poverty in today s society due to the instant eeriness that the stereotypes of both subjects represent and the idea that the poor are unable to receive the necessary health treatments. The way higher income families degrade the poor or even the lack of support given to help is mainly due to the negative stereotypes that are placed on social status. In the article Monsters and Messiahs, UC Riverside professor Mike Davis examines how and why ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. A Defining Moment Essay Many people influenced and events my reading and writing development throughout my childhood from my mother, my elementary librarian, and Sesame Street, to getting my first pair of glasses. We all have defining moments in our lives where we can look back and say, That moment changed my life. This is the story of the defining moment that changed the way I read and write, and I learned it from a whale! It was the beginning of my seventh grade year. I was about twelve years old and, I guess you could say a nerd. I did well in school so I was placed in the Gifted and Talented program with other nerds in my class. As part of this program we were required to read at a certain level or read a certain number of books each semester. You... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I thought to myself, hey, I like whales. I ve read stories about ships and pirates and stuff before. This looks like something I might like. I can still smell the old paper and threaded binding resonating in my mind as I opened the book and scrolled through the pages, soaking in the vibrant illustrations of what would soon become my obsession for the next six months. Happy with my selection and feeling fairly proud of myself, I take the book to the check out desk. The desk is occupied by the stereotypical librarian. She is an older lady probably in her sixties with gray wiry hair and half square bi focal glasses that sit on the end of her nose. As I place the book on the counter, she looks down her nose and through her glasses at me with a look of skepticism. Frowning as she speaks, she tells me that maybe I should choose something else. Undaunted, I refuse and ask to check out the book. She gives a few other suggestions but again, I refuse. She wishes me luck as she slides it back to me and I stuff the hefty book into my backpack. I start reading the book and right away it is intimidating from the very first paragraph. I am faced with language and sentence structure I do not understand, what is a bedfellow and why does he carry a purse? Is he gay? Immediately I am second guessing my decision but I am determined to get through this book. It takes me the better part of a week to get through the first chapter. I ... • 5. Essay Fiber Optics Fiber Optics What are Fiber Optics? Fiber optics are thin transparent fibers of glass or plastic enclosed by a material of a lower index of refraction and that transmit light throughout their length by internal reflections. Real fiber optic cables are made out of very pure glass, glass so pure that if it were miles thick, light would still be able to pass through. The fiber optic strand, although thin in diameter, is stretched to miles in length. Therefore only the purest of glass would be efficient and useful for sending light signals. The glass of these fiber optic cables is drawn into a very thin strand (as thin as human hair), then it is coated in two layers of plastic. By coating the glass in plastic (this is called the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Single Mode cable is a single strand of glass fiber, while multimode cable is made of multiple strands of glass fibers. Each fiber in multimode cable is capable of carrying a different signal independent from those on the other fibers in the cable bundle. Light pulses beam into the fiber s core with an LED (light emitting diode), or laser and these signals are sent over miles and miles. However, the signal over time will begin to weaken. In order o maintain the signal over great distances, there are repeater stations at about every 40 to 60 miles that retransmit these light signalsto ensure the signal reaches its destination. Because light is being used, large amounts of data can be sent at an extremely rapid speed(at the speed of light). Modern day fiber systems can transmit billions of bits per second with a single laser. This can be achieved by the the laser can turn on and off billions of times per second, which would allow for such a high transmission rate. In addition to high rate of transmission, the newest systems increase the number of signals that can be transmitted into each fiber by utiliizing multiple lasers with different colors. The increased data carrying ability and cost savings potential that fiber optics possesses over copper wire cable has already changed the communications and holds many promises for the future of information technology. • 6. Dietary Guidelines For The Diet And Chronic Disease Essay This article was to examine how the US government uses dietary guidelines for Americans and how the guidelines were supposed to help us eat and stay healthy. Diet and chronic diseases are sometimes connected. For example, it is proven that nutrient deficiency disease like scurvy can be cured by consuming the lost nutrients. However, it is also shown that some nutrient exposure can cause chronic illness such as energy, fats, sodium dietary fiber, and food exposures, etc. making it difficult to set dietary guidelines. In addition to some nutrient causing chronic diseases, nondietary factors such as stress, lack of exercise, smoking and other environmental factors are linked to causing chronic illnesses (Slavin, 2012). The relationship between diet and chronic disease made the federal government to issue dietary guidelines for Americans since1980 and publication of dietary guidelines were made every five years. The dietary guideline is in response to the public s desire for authoritative, consistent guidelines on diet and health (Slavin, 2012). One of the reasons for developing the dietary guidelines was to provide science based advice for two years old or older to help prevent chronic diseases and promote health. Another reason why dietary guidelines were created was to lay a good foundation for federal nutrition programs and nutrition education programs and serve as a basis for research gaps and priorities (Slavin, 2012). Also, the government wants to make sure the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Why Writing Is Important To Me I do not think of myself as a very good writer. I feel that my writing is always scrambled, and doesn t quite flow like it should. I do like to write however, if the subject interests me. I would much rather write about a topic that I know a lot about, and care about. If I was to write a paper about dragons, it most likely would not be written very well because I don t care about that subject. I like to write because it is something that I think can be fun. It also is a great way to express yourself in words. A memorable writingassignment would be the DAR paperthat I wrote in fifth grade. DAR stands for Daughters of the American Revolution. DAR is a history writing competition. You write about an assigned topic or time period and you make up a story that later gets judged. One of the main reasons that I think my writing assignments aren t very good is because they aren t very creative. • 8. Rayleigh BпїЅnard Fargination Problem Rayleigh BГ©nard convection problem involves an unstable temperature gradient driving the pertur bations to grow for a single fluid or even a mixture of fluids without phase transformation. However, when the mixture of fluids involve phase transformation, apart from the cooling experienced by the parcel as it relaxes to the temperature of its surrounding, it also experiences the latent heatrelease or absorption associated with the phase transformation. Troposphere, the convectiondominated regime of the atmosphere, has a temperature gradient of 70 K from 288 K at the surface to 222 K at the tropopause and the pressure also decreases exponentially with an e folding height of 7.64 km the combined effect of both pressure and temperature implies the phase transformation of the water vapor. A rising parcel of air can have phase transformation of water vapor to liquid droplets and ice particles, and further, the liquid droplets and ice particles can also transform back to the vapor form. One would expect the effect of phase transformation can be captured as a source/sink term in the energy equation, but the intricacy of the system is furthered by the momentum driving characteristic of the moisture present in the atmosphere. **Buckingham Pi analysis of a moist system reveals two additional dimensionless numbers, Ra v and Le apart from Ra T , P r and Re, appearing in a single phase natural convection problem. The dimensionless parameters are Lewis number (Le), Prandtl number(P r), moisture driven Rayleigh number (Ra v ), analogous to thermally driven Rayleigh number(Ra T ) and Reynolds number(Re). Of these 5 dimensionless numbers, Le and P r capture the properties of the fluid, Ra T and Ra v represents the surrounding conditions and Re represents the nature of resulting flow.** In atmosphere owing to the wide variety of processes and further limited by our measurement capabilities, phenomena at fine ranges are not always captured. I believe these butterflies represented their souls. They had a meaning. The butterflies were supposedly a message of hope, that despite the fact that they would be dead before long, their souls would not die. Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson From the violent and brutal clash between Indians [1], and British colonists in Massachusetts during King Philip s War (1675 6) grew a new literary genre. In the graphic novel, Maus (Volume I and II) Vladek Spiegelman makes it very clear to his son, Artie, that one cannot count on their friends. He makes the point that in time of hardship, friends will abandon you quite quickly. Vladek says, Friends? Your friends...if you lock them together in a room with no food for a week...then you could see what it is, friends! (Maus, VI. 5 6). Unfortunately, he was so quick to turn his back on the people who had treated him so kindly. Yet again, it becomes evident that no one can be trusted when the prisoners are being marched from the concentration camp due to the Nazis fear that the United States and allies soon would discover their operation. The Jewish prisoners arrange a plan with some of the German guards marching alongside them. The prisoners pay the guards with the agreement that when they try to run the German soldiers will fire over their heads and not kill them. When the time came to run, the prisoners break away from the pack and start towards the woods, however, the same soldiers that promised not to shoot them shot them in the back as they ran (Maus V II 82 83). The Germans that were supposed to be the friends of the Jews and help them escape took their gold and did not hesitate to shoot them in the back as they ran. Fortunately, for everyone s sake, not everyone was only out to save himself or herself. In contrast to the many examples where betrayal was the norm there are several examples of friends who were genuine and helped to make the situation better for someone even they could not make it better ... • 13. The Sherlock Holmes By Dr. James Watson One of the things that make the Sherlock Holmes books distinctive is their point of view. The books are written as an account Sherlock Holmes case, written by Dr. James Watson, chronicling the achievements of the detective. This book, in particular, is unique in its point of view. The first few chapters are told in past tense, as Watson recalls the events; the next few chapters are present tense, in the form of extracts from Watson s diary or letters sent to Holmes from the hall; the last few chapters shift back to past tense recollections. Having Watson tell the tale instead of Holmes was a compelling choice. Holmes, with his straightforward logical mind, would have been unable to provide the imagery that Watson did. Watson, who has more of an artistic flair, was able to beautifully describe the disturbing way the fog rolled on the moor, or how the Hall at night was desolate and gloomy. Holmes would have only given a bare boned factual account of events; none of the dramatic scenes emotional description gifted by Watson. Furthermore, having Watson tell the tale makes Holmes methods seem more enigmatic as the perspective is not from inside Holmes head. Having this veil of mystery around the techniques Holmes uses makes him seem more impressive and worthy of the reader s respect. Watson s perspective also enabled the reader to discover clues and unravel the case along with him. Watson began the case and went to Dartmoor without any idea of who caused Sir Charles death, ... The thyroid gland is abundant with blood vessels and it secretes thyroid hormone (Kumar 22). Thyroid hormone influences many different internal body functions such as, metabolism, growth, development, turning food into energy, and increases body temperature. Thyroidhormone is very important for brain development and normal growth during infancy; furthermore, a newborn s blood drawn from their heel and sent for screening determines of level of thyroid stimulating hormone (Samuels 2). I wanted to research the thoughts and feelings someone who has cancer might go through. From the research, I found depression to play a big role in the outcome of the patient s therapies and quality of life with cancer. In fact, a study shows there is a direct correlation between the two, which is quite fascinating; it amazes me how the brain, the body, and the unconscious mind work together. This topic hits home when it comes to cancer. Sadly, we have all lost someone to the deadly disease or know someone who is battling it right now. I ve always wondered what my loved one might be feeling. Do they believe they can fight cancerous cells or will they succumb to the illness and fall into depression? I find it upsetting to see the second choice happen, but what if there was something we could do? These questions lead me to research the correlation between two hardships: cancer and depression. In the event of being diagnosed with cancer, one may experience many emotions, from anger to hatred, or sadness to even the feeling of guilt. Joseph (San Giuseppe) is believed to protect the family, and the poor or otherwise ill fated. That s why large feasts, at time accommodating somewhere around 100 people, are typically held on March 19 in his honor, though honor is clearly shown to more than Joseph. The altar is usually built inside the hostess s (altar makers ) home, usually in the living room. The everyday altars are normally permeant and out of the way and subtle and simplistic. The St. Joseph s Day altar however is made to draw the eye and adorned with food. The altar consists of many different foods and lots of sweets. There are some general aspects in the decorating for the altar, but the details can vary widely from home to home. Offerings are made about everything for health to money to the general protection of the family. The day before the feast, the men are given their one culinary task of spaghetti, gravy, eggs and sauce, with ingredients made up by the woman. This is usually done within a garage or tent, the woman checking in or even supervising. This is one of the few task the men have due to the event mostly being managed by the women, on the day of as well as long before the day arrives. He fought for nobility, survival and the fallen and gained a greater understanding about how this universe works and what makes it tick, only this one received the boon from drops of blood and at the point of a spear, in the heat of battle. Over the years, many banks in the US started the practice of offering home loans to high risk individuals, i.e., individuals who had a high probability of defaulting on their loans. The banks justified this move by saying that even if these individuals defaulted on their loans, the amount could be recovered by selling off the property in question. Over a period of time, many of these individuals defaulted on their payments, as was expected, and the banks put the properties back on the market. However, when so many properties were put on sale at the same time, the property prices, which were already over inflated to begin with, plummeted. The unprecedented drop in property rates proved fatal for banks that had already invested most of their money in these speculative deals, and they were forced to close down. The collapse of these banks is just one of the indicative causes of the present recession. The roots of this recession can be said to lie in over inflated property prices, oil prices, and commodity prices. Artificially inflated prices are typical of a profitable market. When the market is doing well, the sellers eventually become greedy and raise the prices. All is well, as long as the buyers continue to be able to afford the inflated prices. However, the day the prices reach a level where the majority of the buyers cannot afford them, a crash in the prices, and consequently a recession, is inevitable. 3. In spite of the fact that immortality has a different meaning for Gilgamesh, as it does for Achilles, each choice and additionally every one of the sacrifices they make, all depend on their fear of dying and death. Both Gilgamesh and Achilles actions showed insight into their cultures. It somewhat proved an answer to the way they did things and why they. First, Gilgamesh and Achilles are two epic heroes who share some differences. Among the differences there are also some similarities. Achilles and Gilgamesh were to a great degree different with respect to their identity and how they reacted to death. Achilles was a warrior and Gilgamesh was a ruler, each all around respected and feared in their role. They both demonstrated fearlessness and toughness in their parts, yet their responses to the passing of their best friend varied greatly. Combined Achilles and Gilgamesh participated in many battles, as discussed in Homer s Iliad and the Mesopotamian Epic of Gilgamesh . ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. Medea s Quest For The Golden Fleece Synopsis The play of Medea was written by Seneca around 50 CE. In Greek Myth Medea is the daughter of King Aeetes of Colchis, granddaughter of Helios and niece of Circe. She seeks revenge on her husband Jason after he abandons her in Corinth in order to marry Creon s daughter. Over ten years before the start of the play Medea had met Jason when she assisted him in his quest for the Golden Fleece using her powers to aid him in impossible tasks that her father had set in front of Jason as his price for obtaining the Golden Fleece. As assisting Jason meant that she was betraying both her family and her country she fled with Jason to Thessaly. Their peace did not last long and they were forced to flee back to Corinth where everything was fine ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She is set on getting revenge for the wrongs done against her right from the beginning of the play. The Medea in Seneca s play is no weak damsel or victim of fate, she is a strong and powerful woman, a force of nature, who will destroy anyone or anything that wrongs her, even killing her sons without hesitation or lament. She demands to be feared rather than pitied and does not hesitate to do what she feels she must in order to right the wrongs against her. The Chorus Seneca s chorus is objective and does not hesitate in condemning the actions they are witnessing. This is fine because Medea does not need their sympathy or permission, she is a woman who makes things happen and does not rely on the gods. Jason In my opinion Jason takes the feminine role in the play. He comes across as rather weak and helpless allowing the fates to dictate his course rather than fighting. He is also too willing to try to help Medea and to trust her, when she pretends to have a change of heart. Also the fact that at the end of the play he laments to the gods able why they allow such things to happen, rather than vowing to avenge his son s deaths, confirms to me that he has taken the feminine role in the play. ... The clothing and black mask also give off the appearance of a defacto executioner accompanying his victim on his last walk (Platizky 207). In the end, Montresor s upbringing in the old money class of the elite has shaped his view of the world. Just as Montresor was constructed to be calm and decisive, Fortunato is portrayed as impulsive and immature. At the beginning of the story, Fortunato is introduced wearing a motley outfit. Fortunato s outfit brilliantly represents his personality and how he is viewed by the aristocratic families of the time (Whatley 56,58). The costume builds the idea in the reader s mind that Fortunato is the exact opposite of Montresor. This opposite effect is shown through many variations throughout the story. First, Fortunato inadvertently insults Montresor when he admits that he has forgotten the Montresor family crest and motto (Stepp 447, 449). While his ignorance is not the reason for the revenge, it lets Poe depict Fortunato s naivety (White 551). Financial ratios, in this case, will act as performance metrics for different business operations. The ratios indicate the actual financial and performance health of any business at a particular time. The earnings per share of the common stock is a financial metric for a business net income believed to be available to reward the common stock shareholders. The ratiois usually calculated by dividing the difference between the net after tax profits and dividends attributed to preferred shareholders with the average number of outstanding common shares. Significantly higher earnings per share imply that the business is capable of paying reasonable dividends to the common shareholders while a low ratio indicates a reduced ability for the entity to declare and pay reasonable dividends to its common shareholders. From the comparison, Nike has a higher EPS ratio at 1.05 compared to 0.98 for Under Armour. The Inter relationship between pathways to drug discovery, drug development and drug manufacturing When it comes to small molecule drugs specifically, the journey to eventually becoming an approved and marketed drug ready for the public is an exhausting and comprehensive odyssey which involves the following components: basic research, finding the medicine, initial testing, complex clinical trials involving human beings and then eventually hard sought after approval by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) (Corr Williams, 2009). However the small intestine is by far the most efficient region of the gastrointestinal tract for alcohol absorption because of its very large surface area. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Alcohol Content It s not how many drinks that you have, but how much alcohol that you consume. The concentration of the drinks that one ingest can have a slight effect on the peak alcohol concentration due to the differences in absorption rate of different concentrations of alcohol. Alcohol is most rapidly absorbed when the concentration of the drink is between 10% and 30%. Below 10% the concentration gradient in the gastrointestinal tract is low and slows absorption and the added volumes of liquid involved slow gastric emptying. On the other hand concentrations higher than 30% tend to irritate the mucous membranes of the gastrointestinal tract and the pyloric sphincter, causing increased secretion of mucous and delayed gastric emptying. Food Food taken along with alcohol results in a lower, delayed blood alcohol concentration peak (the point of greatest intoxication). There are two major factors involved in this phenomenon. First, because alcohol is absorbed most efficiently in the small intestine, the ingestion of food can slow down the absorption of alcohol into one s system. The pyloric valve at the bottom of the stomach will close in order to hold food in the stomach for digestion and thus keep the alcohol from reaching the small intestine. ... My father has said many times that, Pat was the most genuine person he has ever met , and until Cam Newton came along my Father thought that Pat was Auburn s best Quarterback ever. • 40. Volunteer Service In American Society In American society, helping those that are less fortunate has always served as one of our core values. Benjamin Franklin is credited as the first volunteer when he founded a volunteer firefighting company in 1736. During the Civil War, Ladies Aid Societies came together providing linen for bandages, wrappings, and many other cloth items. Often times, the volunteerwillingly makes concessions in their own schedule to help others or provide services for charitable organizations. What motivates the volunteer to sacrifice their own time in the service of others? In this paper, I will address a variety of factors that drive the individual to give back to their community. • 41. Argumentative Essay On Children On God Dark and gloomy clouds cover the gray sky as rain endlessly floods the planet Venus. No bright colors are to be found, and great jungles surround the entire planet and never stop growing. In a small school located on the drizzling planet , nine year old Margot stands apart from her fellow classmates, all of them waiting for the sunto come out again. 7 years ago was the sun s last appearance, and the children on Venus eagerly wait for the sun to show itself one more time. However, they don t entirely remember what the sun is like, except for shy little Margot for whom the other children all hate and ignore. When Margot describes to them what the sun is like, they don t believe her and think she is just making it all up. This is because Margot s different, for she lived on Earth 5 years ago and still actually remembers the sun and its beautiful presence and warmth. Unfortunately, the other children on Venus hate her for that, for they never got to experience what Margot has experienced. Unlike Margot, they have lived on Venus their whole lives. Due to Margot s prior experiences on Earth, the children on Venus act negatively and jealous towards her. This major theme can be shown through denial, depression, and harassment. One way the children on Venus act jealous towards Margot is that deny her beliefs about the sun and think that she is making it all up. Ray Bradbury shows this when he writes, It s like a penny she said once, eyes closed. No it s not! the children cried. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. Examples Of Proactive Personality Construct The proactive personality construct was introduced by Bateman and Crant (1993) who defined it as a relatively stable tendency to effect environmental change (p. 107). Since that time proactive personality has emerged as a heuristic construct in organizational settings, showing significant relationships with such variables as job performance, career success, and leadership quality (e.g., Crant Bateman, 2000; Crant, 1995; Seibert et al., 1999; Thompson, 2005). Proactive personality is most frequently measured by Bateman and Crant s (1993) scale. The internal consistency of this scale ranged from .83 to .89 across three college student samples. The construct validity of Bateman and Crant s (1993) 17 item proactive personality scale was tested in relation to other personality constructs, such as conscientiousness (r = .43,p .01) and social desirability (r = .004,n.s.). In order to test for criterion validity, Bateman and Crant (1993) correlated their measure with several criteria including, extra curricular activities aimed at constructive ... Employees with this disposition tend to perceive opportunities for positive changes in the workplace and then actively work to bring about these changes (Bateman Crant, 1993; Grant Ashford, 2008). Proactive employees demonstrate initiation, perceive their work roles more broadly, take active steps to get work done, initiate changes, follow through until completion, and subsequently perform well at work; hence, proactive personality has been linked to a number of positive work outcomes (see Crant Bateman, 2000; Crant, 1995; Seibert et al., 1999; Thompson, 2005), which makes proactive employees desirable to their organizations. • 43. Experiential Family Therapy Experiential family therapy (EFT) was first developed in the 1960 s by physician and psychotherapy pioneer Carl Whitaker and is aimed at helping individual family members feel fulfilled and self actualized within the family unit by means of improving cooperation and intimacy among family members. Unlike other schools of familytherapy, EFT does not focus on the perceived problems of individual family members but examines how family interactions and communications cause problems for the individual family members. It is important to remember that, due to the level of interpersonal involvement needed in this style of therapy it requires every family member involved to fully participate in the process. For optimum effectiveness, the family should already be relatively stable. /p Whitaker s approach to EFT is known as the symbolic experiential model. This model emphasizes immediate, here and now experiences rather than the introspective methods of earlier theories and promotes emotional expression as a medium of shared experience and as a means of both personal and family fulfillment. Symbolic experiential family therapyis predicated on the existential idea that there is a great deal more to a family s dynamics and existence than is empirically observable; unconscious dynamics, histories of shared and individual experiences, secrets, etc. This model attempts to integrate two different aspects of human experience; experience and symbols. Experience is what is taken in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Kino s physical and spiritual existence is intimately connected with the natural world. An important element of the novella is nature imagery. Kino observes the world of his garden in the opening scene of Chapter 1 and the world of the ocean in Chapter 2. Kino and Juana s final journey up the mountain takes place on a dark night full of animal noises and cries. Steinbeck mirrors the human word as he depicts the natural world as a realm. Collectively, the works of Steinbeck s nature imagery parallels the natural worlds idyllic innocence to that of Kino s at the beginning of the novella. The natural world described in the novella s darker qualities, at the end of story, reflect that of the struggle and fight Kino experiences at the novellas end, once greed, power and wealth had corrupted his soul. For example there was a parallel created between Kino s relationship to nature and the god s relationship to Kino (he towers over the ants in the same way that the gods tower over ... He also describes the situation of the Palestinians and the isolation that they feel through photographs that he had taken. Said has many different pictures throughout this essay and each of them play a part in supporting the main point of this essay. Said believes that, without a homeland, the Palestinians cannot have an identity and the Palestinians should not be content with being exiles forever. So the purpose of the pictures is to support and further strengthen this idea. The photographer wants the viewer to understand the struggle that the Palestinians are going through.
