PERSUASIVE STATEMENTS

 Learning Objective: learning to use language which makes you
  sound authoritative and like you are an exper t. To learn how to
  write persuasive statements.

 The way you use language can really make you sound
  authoritative; if you phrase things a certain way you can
  definitely sound important. Eg
 It is commonly stated that…
 It is often argued…
 Everyone agrees that…
 No one can be in any doubt that…

EXERCISE

 Take these statements and make them sound more
  authoritative and persuasive.

   Pupils think homework is a waste of time.
   Teachers hope homework might do their pupils some good.
   Animals are very sad when they are locked in cages.
   Football is sometimes quite interesting.

Choose a hobby/activity you REALLY like and write a persuasive
statement about it.

 It is commonly acknowledged that pupils think homework is a
  waste of time.
 There’s no doubt that teachers believe homework will help
  their pupils.
 Everyone agrees animals are miserable when they are locked
  up in cages.
 Everyone thinks that football is fascinating.

  • 2. PERSUASIVE STATEMENTS  Learning Objective: learning to use language which makes you sound authoritative and like you are an exper t. To learn how to write persuasive statements.  The way you use language can really make you sound authoritative; if you phrase things a certain way you can definitely sound important. Eg  It is commonly stated that…  It is often argued…  Everyone agrees that…  No one can be in any doubt that… 9/10/2012 2

EXERCISE  Take these statements and make them sound more authoritative and persuasive.  Pupils think homework is a waste of time.  Teachers hope homework might do their pupils some good.  Animals are very sad when they are locked in cages.  Football is sometimes quite interesting. Choose a hobby/activity you REALLY like and write a persuasive statement about it. 9/10/2012 3

ANSWERS??  It is commonly acknowledged that pupils think homework is a waste of time.  There’s no doubt that teachers believe homework will help their pupils.  Everyone agrees animals are miserable when they are locked up in cages.  Everyone thinks that football is fascinating. 9/10/2012 4
