The Darkness of Colonialism and Imperialism in Heart of...
The Light and Dark of Colonialism in Heart of Darkness
In the opening of his novel, Heart of Darkness, Conrad, through Marlow, establishes his thoughts on
colonialism. He says that conquerors only use brute force, nothing to boast of because it arises, by
accident, from another s weakness. Marlow compares his subsequent tale of colonialism with that
of the Roman colonization of Northern Europe and the fascination associated with such an
endeavor. However, Marlow challenges this viewpoint by painting a heinous picture of the horrors
of colonialist ventures as we delve deeper into the recesses of the novel. Here we find that Marlow
sees colonization as robbery with violence, aggravated murder on a great scale, and men going at ...

Like Marlow, Kurtz began his employment with the ivory company with noble intentions: he
wants to create a better way of life for the natives. However, because of extreme hardships placed
upon him by the manager, Kurtz becomes the dark half of the soul: he symbolizes what Marlow
may have become if placed in Kurtz position.
As the treacherous villain of the tale the manager, signifies total darkness and blackness of the soul,
as he is responsible for the severely unbalanced priorities of the company through the extreme
importance given to the obtaining of ivory and the deficiency of importance given to human lives.
Conrad also implements minor characters to further the unexpected distinction between dark and
light, black and white. The white pilgrims are portrayed as materialistic, ivory hungry opportunists
with black souls; their behavior is violent and savage. Contrariwise, the black natives are civil,
spiritual, and have white souls. In the beginning of the novel, Conrad creates the fellow seamen
who accompany Marlow on his present journey and listen to his tale of the Congo to establish the
contrast between the materialistic and the spiritual. The fellow sailors do not understand Marlow s
tale and chastise him throughout, showing their reluctance and inability to

John Steinbeck s The Last Of The Mohicans
The book Last of the Mohicans is about a group of Native Americans called the Mohicans. The
characters are Hawkeye, his adopted father Chingachgook, and his adopted brother Uncas. They
re are the last of the Mohicans, the last of the bloodline. The story takes place in the 18th century
during a seven year war between Britain and France. Hawkeye and the Mohicans try to save the
daughter of a British colonel when a conflict arises. Magua of the Hurons attempts to kill the
Mohicans and kidnap the two girls. Magua is the trouble maker and wants revenge against Col.
Munro by trying to marry one of the daughters and hurt his pride. There was a lot of racial
conflict between white and Indian race at a time when racism was at its height. The relationship
between Chingachgook and Uncas is a bit complicated. Their love for each other isn t portrayed
well in the story. It s a distant love that parents and children have endured throughout time. He s
very protective of his daughter. She doesn t like how restricting he can be. At times, they re both
stubborn toward one another. She gets so mad she wishes she could explode at him. Although she
s deeply angry at her father, she loves him more then life itself. Being her wise father, and a child

Old Ben And Fox Hunt Comparison Essay
Some things can be very similar, but also very different. For example, stories can be different.
They have different plots and different authors, but they can also have similar elements and plot
ideas. Some examples of that in a story could be that a character makes a friend, or attempts to
achieve a goal. In this essay, I will be comparing and contrasting Old Ben and Fox Hunt , two
stories with different plots and similar elements. While some similarities are evident between Old
Ben and Fox Hunt , the differences are also distinct.
There are many similarities between Old Ben and Fox Hunt . One of them is the use of
foreshadowing in both narratives. Foreshadowing is when there are indications throughout the
text that hint at events to come. In Old Ben , it is foreshadowed that the snake will die in the end.
In Fox Hunt , it is foreshadowed that Lee is the fox spirit. Another similarity is that the two
stories both have main characters that are either animals, or have animal characteristics, such as
Ben from Old Ben , who is a snake, and Andy, from Fox Hunt , who is part fox. A closing
similarity is that both of the stories use narrative structure. Narrative structure is when a narrative is
arranged in chronological order. Looking at these examples, we ... Show more content on

Conversely, there are also distinct differences. One of those differences is Fox Hunt using
flashbacks to tell a story. Flashbacks inform you of events that happened in the past. Old Ben does
not use any flashbacks at all. A second differenceis that Old Ben transpires over a longer period of
time; months pass during the story. In Fox Hunt , the story only takes place over a few weeks. A
concluding difference is that Fox Hunt uses fantasy ideas, such as fox spirits, while Old Ben does
not, and only uses real life ideas. Therefore, Old Ben and Fox Hunt are quite different in many

Prepared by Jing Wang
Abstract
This paper explores the question whether the financial statements can be made more useful. This
leads to an important concept in accounting the concept of decision usefulness. To properly
understand this concept, this paper outlines other theories from economics and finance to assist in
conceptualizing the meaning of useful financial statement information.
The main purpose of this paper is to introduce the concept of decision usefulness approach, related
... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore, in order to adopt the decision usefulness approach, three major questions must be
addressed:
1. Who are the users of financial statements?
It is helpful to categorize users into broad groups, such as investors, creditors, managers, unions,
standard setters, and governments, etc. These groups are called constituencies of accounting.
* Investors * Holders of equity securities, such as common stocks, preferred shares * Holders of
partnership interest * Other equity holders or owners
* Creditors * Purchaser of debt instrument * Lend economic resources
* Manager * Inside financial statements provider and user * Has a different incentive of using
financial statements than outsiders
* Other users (provide resources) * Employees provide human capital in exchange for salary,
remuneration and pension. * Suppliers extend credit to facilitate sales. * Customers prepay for
goods and services. * Union, standard setters and governments provide policies and regulations.
In order to take a close look into various financial statement users behaviour, two theories or
concepts should be outlined here:
* Single person decision theory
Single person decision theory takes the viewpoint of an individual who much make a decision
under conditions of uncertainty. * It suggests how a rational individual makes optimal decisions in
the presence of uncertainty. * It

Mold Experiment
Bread Mold Experiment
Mold is something that we often take for granted, as something that makes us have to throw the
bread away or the cheese smell bad.
Mold is, in fact, a fascinating organism which has had many different uses over the years and our
lives would not be the same without it.
Most of us know that food seems to become moldy more quickly in the summer than in the winter
when it is colder. Food in refrigerators seems to keep longer than food left out in the sun. Is this
true? Does temperature really affect the rate at which mold grows?
Mold grows quicker at higher temperatures. Companies pay large sums of money in maintaining
food refrigerated in house and on transport, so it is essential for them to know under what ... Show

The Book Thief Rhetorical Analysis
The Book Thief, written by Australian novelist Markus Zusak, follows a young girl living in Nazi
Germany, and employs innovative techniques to convey the central idea of the extremes of human
behavior. This central idea was explored through stylistic techniques and conventions such as Death
as the narrator, juxtaposition, irony, lack of chronological order, narrative voices, and themes,
namely the power of words.
In The Book Thief, Markus Zusak used narrative voices to convey extremes of human behavior.
The characters through which he conveyed these innovated techniques are Death, the narrator, and
Max Vandeburg, a central character. Death s narrative voice was distant and provided juxtaposition
on the kindness and cruelty of humans through ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

highlights Hitler s hatred for Jewish people. The words in this story enforced the cruelty of

The Performance Of Sense And Sensibility
I went to the performance of Sense and Sensibility on Thursday night and I sat in the second row,
which was very close to the performance. The layout of the theatre definitely provided a different
perspective depending on where the audience member sat. The theatre was close to completely
filled, but there were still a few seats that were empty. Overall the show was my favorite one yet
that I have attended at W L. Sense and Sensibilityis written by Kate Hamill who based the script
off the novel that was written by Jane Austen. The performance was directed by Stephanie
Sandberg and it was presented by the W L Department of Theater, Dance, and Film Studies with
special arrangements from Dramatists Play Service Inc. The performers were made up of
predominately W L students and after reading their bios it became clear to me that the performers
come from many different backgrounds and they have varying levels of experience performing.
The audience was made up of primarily elderly couples and families from the surrounding
Rockbridge area. I saw some professors in the audience with their families which was great to see.
W L students were definitely the minority in the audience that night. The audience reacted very
strongly to the actors performance and some members in the front row were actually part of the
performance. The room was very tight and was surrounded by stands where the audience was only
feet from the actual performance. During the performance the

Sasha: Hey Devon!
Devon: That class was crazy! There was so much information regarding animal rights...
Sasha: I know. But I don t know if any of that changed my views. I still think becoming a
vegetarian is the way to go.
Devon: You think? I still think that it is okay to eat meat. The animalsjust need to be raised in a
humane manner.
Sasha: Eh...I don t know. Animals should just be left alone and be free to roam around in the wild.
They should not be tortured like those animals that I saw while visiting that kill floor .

ones you saw on your field trip, but they still can live a good life on a farm and be treated with ...

Devon: I can agree with that too! So, when animals are on the farm, they really don t know what s
going to come in the future. Also, if they do get hurt, they are able to get over it quickly and not sit
there and think about the pain.
Sasha: But it still bothers me that they are not getting treated the same way as humans. I
remember in Peter Singers article when he talked about the idea of speciesism. He said that it was
an attitude of bias that favored the interest of members of their own species (4). The one species is
against the other species.
Devon: Well, I can see how that is a good argument.
Sasha: And the fact that we treat these animals based on intelligence is also ridiculous. Just because
a dog does not understand what it means to vote, society should not consider it less intelligent than
us. It is a living thing that deserves the best life.
Devon: Okay, but Sasha, you have to also remember that these animals do depend on us to
continue to live a good life. Without us, they would be put in the wild and be put at risk of dying
fast. In Pollan s article, he discussed how animals live longer in captivity and how domesticated
animals can t live on their own in the wild (6). Yeah, they will not be living the absolute free life,
but they will be protected and nourished if needed.
Sasha: Hmmm I never really noticed that. But, do you see how these animals are being treated like
a tool? In Regan s article, he said that animals should not be treated as a means

Essay On Organizational Culture In The Workplace
An organization always faces challenges when allowing new employees into their culture. Brethren
Woods Camp and Retreat Center encounters this change every year when they orient their summer
staff. Last summer, however, a new problem occurred to challenge their organizational culture.
During the fifth week of their six week summer camp program, they caught wind from a
stakeholder that some of their employees had been in violation of the personnel policy they all
signed earlier in the summer. After confirming this information with the employees in question,
they were quick to judge the situation. Two employees were fired while the rest were treated to a
talking circle. The incident was not explained to the entire staff and was never spoken... Show more

With roots in the Church of the Brethren, it is easy to trace where the organizational culture gets its
roots. In fact their mission statement is to provide Christian educational opportunities, facilities,
and programs for all ages in an inviting woodland setting; encouraging the formation of Christ
centered living, leadership, and stewardship of creation, leading toward wholeness in the kingdom
of God (Brethren Woods, 2017). These Christian beliefs are explicit in each camp week as the
organization values events including bible study, vespers, and morning watch. They can also be
seen in the expectations for employees from the dress code to the housing rules. Brethren Woods
also gets much of their funding from Brethren churches surrounding the area. As stakeholders, these
churches keep the camp accountable to their values because they do not want to put their money
into an organization that does not align with their beliefs. All of these elements of the camp s
organizational culture led to the way the handled the problem with their staff. First off, one of the
elements of their mission is to form leaders in Christ. With their leaders exhibiting behaviors
contrary to these values, something had to be done. Next, there was a culture set by the executive
director and two co program directors that they wanted to perpetuate. They could not allow the
culture to morph into something against their mission. Lastly, the stakeholders expect Brethren
Woods to uphold an

Project Mercury Thesis Statement
In 1957, the Soviet Union launched the satellite Sputnik, and the space race was on. The Soviet s
triumph jarred the American people and sparked a vigorous response in the federal government to
make sure the United States did not fall behind its communist rival.
A new space program, Project Mercury, was initiated two years later, during President Dwight D.
Eisenhower s administration. Seven men were selected to take part in the program: Scott
Carpenter, Leroy Gordon Cooper, John Glenn Jr., Virgil Grissom, Walter Schirra Jr., Alan Shepard
Jr., and Donald Slayton. Project Mercury s goals were to orbit a manned spacecraft around Earth,
investigate the ability of astronauts to function in space, and recover astronauts and spacecraft

served as communication relays for the landers once they touched down. It was highly successful
and formed most of the body of knowledge about Mars through the late 199os and early 2ooos.
Viking 1 was launched on August 2o, 1975, and the second craft, Viking 2, was launched on
September 9, 1975, both riding atop Titan III E rockets with Centaur upper stages. Viking 1
entered Mars orbit on June 19, 1976, with Viking 2 following suit on August 7.
After orbiting Mars for more than a month and returning images used for landing site selection, the
orbiters and landers detached; the landers then entered the Martian atmosphere and soft landed at
the sites that had been chosen. The Viking 1 lander touched down on the surface of Mars on July

Wayside Madonna
Wayside Madonna is an oil painting on canvas by Edith Catlin Phelps. It was painted around 1939.
Painted in southern California, it is a genre painting that is part of the regionalism movement but
also has a religious subject. This painting is currently part of the permanent collection at Bowers
Museum in Santa Ana, California. Phelps s oil paintingWayside Madonnaultimately focuses on the
lady in the foreground, providing a narrative about southern California culture, and places an
emphasis on the need for a more American focus and style of painting that does not rely so heavily
on European art. The painting is organized simply. The background of the painting is painted in an

However, the desert scene and mountains suggest that this was painted in Southern California. In
the background, one can see a man leading a pack animal, a woman, and an infant along a road
towards the church, identified by the cross on the rooftop. There are no shadows to define form in
the background. This is, again, a contrast to the shadows made by the Madonna in the foreground.
The lack of shadows, however, does not make the background look flat. The Impressionist styled
painting and the lack of detail in the background creates a distant look that gives depth to the
painting. The numerous contrasts between the background and the foreground allows the artist to
subtly draw the viewer?fs attention towards the foreground. These contrasts help grab the viewer?fs
gaze and direct it to the most important part of the painting: the woman and baby. Wayside
Madonna has some clear iconography. The woman dominating the foreground is a direct allusion to
the Virgin Mary. Seated and holding a sleeping male baby in her arms, a violet robe drapes over
the figure. The woman wears a simple white outfit and adoringly looks down towards the baby.
This depiction is very similar to the common depiction of the Virgin Mary holding baby Jesus in
religious European art. An important difference between the European religious Virgin Mary and
Wayside Madonna is the skin color. The Virgin Mary in European art is often painted as white
skinned.

French Education System Essay
French Education System:
France has a centralized education system, with a curriculum set at a national level. The majority of
schools are public, free, and state run (ecoles publiques). Some private schools (sous contrat) exist
that are run and subsidized by the French government, which charge nominal fees. Fully
independent private schools exist (ecoles prives hors contrat), which are fee paying. These
independent private scgools can be religiously oriented, or international / bilingual.
The learning style tends to be of a traditional nature, which entails classroom learning, testing, and
discipline. French schools value the authority of the teacher, competition, evaluating through
grading, and analytical thinking over creativity. Class sizes tend to be large, with 30 or more
students per class. Teachers teach one subject in most scenarios, which is typical of the traditional
method. Changes have been presented to reform the French schooling system, but is met with
opposition that prefers the traditional method. French schooling is split up into three primary and
secondary levels: primary school (Г©cole), middle school (collГЁge), and high school (lycГ©e).
After high school, students can attend university or enter the workforce.
French students take the baccalaurГ©at exam towards the end of their primary and secondary
schooling. Passing the test is necessary to attend university. Performance on the exam is highly
scrutinized, and high tier grades receive special honors.

Essay on Quentin Tarentino
Quentin Tarentino
Throughout the many years the film industry has grown, a certain type of filmmaker immerged,
known as an auteur. An auteur, usually a director, has a strong personal style and exercises creative
control over his or her works. Quentin Tarentino, for example, has proven himself to be an auteur in
various ways. Quentin Tarentino worked for four years as a clerk in a Los Angeles video store,
where he made his feature directorial and screenwriting debut of Reservoir Dogs, and where he
further expanded his great knowledge of film. Tarentino s personal style incorporates a lot of well

The last very brutal scene of the movie is when the whole crew of gangsters hold guns that are
pointed at each other for the sake of Mr. Orange s life. Eventually, the whole gang ends up dying,
even Mr. Orange. When he confesses to being a cop Mr. White puts a bullet in his head and is
instantly killed by the police officers that came in for the bust. All this violence portrays many
things about the film and about what Tarentino is trying to suggest. He manifests these gangster
characters with such disregard to living, going to jail, and swearing simply to show the audience
how he believes criminals act. Quentin therefore tries to present a criminal lifestyle as it most
likely is, not worth it. He suggests that a life of crime and violence leads to dead ends such as
jail, death, or predicaments such as having an informant on a well planned out diamond heist.
Quentin Tarentino uses tracking shots that also leave his mark on the movies he directs. For
instance, when Mr. Blonde starts to lead his fellow criminals out to the car to look at the cop he
has captured. The camera begins to follow the group out to the car from their backsides, and then
opens up to the outside of the warehouse, from dark to light. This shows the criminals containment
in the warehouse; in a way trapped from leaving. When they arrive to the car, the camera shows
the criminals from a low angle. This represents their power over the cop, and the feelings they hold
for their superiority over law, when

Edgar Allan Poe Silver The Golden Bells
The Bells is a very famous poem that was written by Edgar Allan Poe.The poem contains four
parts to it, each part becoming darker and darker as the poem progresses from the jingling and the
tinkling of the bells to the moaning and the groaning of the bells. The bells represent and describe
four specific points in a person s life. Poe does this by utilizing the various sounds of bells and
giving them some human characteristics. Each individual sound of the bellsexpress certain moods
to coincide with what they mean or represent. The silver bells represent the happiest stage of a
human s life. In the following quote Poe uses imagery and onomatopoeia to describe the mood and

Poe uses imagery and states, What a world of solemn thought their monody compels! (Poe IV.3).
This quote puts a picture in my mind of a gravesite where the living are mourning and the dead
lie silent. The beings in the steeple at first resembled the recently deceased loved ones watching
from afar. And the people ah, the people They that dwell up in the steeple All Alone. (IV.10 12).
Then as Poe continues to describe them in more detail They are neither man nor woman They
are neither brute nor human They are Ghouls; (IV.17 19).This lets me know that they are

ends with a portrayal of Satan and his demons dancing with enjoyment at capturing another soul
and possibly at the opportunity to take others. And his merry bosom swells With the paean of

how sad the poem is overall, To the sobbing of the bells . (IV.35). This last stage of the poem,
being sadder yet longer, is required to put an emphasis on the dreadful things that has happened to

overviews in accurately analyzing history. If overviews are skipped, historical analysis can get
bogged down in details, which can potentially lead to seeing the forest for the trees. Although
almost exclusively focused on foreign policy, McMahon reveals a president that is able to change
with the times. Even before Gorbachev, Reagan was willing to adjust his actual policy positions in
the face of political and public pressure as seen during... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He, and many conservative evangelical leaders, took advantage of cultural fears to create an
ideology where any compromise was seen as an existential threat to Christianity and the moral
goodness of America. Additionally, his explicit hostility to many government programs, which
might have had inefficiencies, amplified the general undermining of institutions that is bearing fruit
in society today. Reagan, like many leaders exhibited positive and negative attributes, most often
dependent on one s political affiliation. My main point is that the vilification or glorification of
Reagan simplifies the historical narrative into partisan, ideological silos. I focused on this point
while reading the documents because of the perturbing events transpiring in politics today. A
dialogue between liberal host Bill Maher and neoconservative writer David Frum on the most
recent Real Time show on HBO, vividly showed the growing realization that our institutions are
under threat. Sensationalism, whether it adheres to the liberal or conservative ideology, has given
rise to a dangerous form of cynicism that edges on

Stevie Wonder Accomplishments
256 million people worldwide have low vision (Marcovitz 32). 39 million of those people suffer
from the inability to see. The definition of blindness is not being able to see (20). However,
complete loss of vision is also used interchangeably for the definition ( Blindness ). Stevie Wonder
is one of the thirty nine million people who experience blindness(Brown 6).
Important to realize, blindness affects many people. Disabilities such as glaucoma, cataracts, age
related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, meningitis, and women who are pregnant with
syphilis are at risk of developing blindness (Marcovitz 10). Many children in less developed
countries live with vitamin A deficiencies which can lead to blindness ( Blindness ). Researchers...

Fin Position Lab Report
The worse thing that could happen is for you to sink on a ship. But with a submarine, that exactly
what you want! The purpose of my science fair project was to find out how the presence or
absence of a stabalazing fin will affect the movement and funcntion of the submarine. I was also
trying to find out what fin position is the best for the submarineto move properely as desired. My
hypothesis was that the submarine will need a fin to move and function properly, so that it doesn t
go out of control. I also think that the best position for the submarine is to put the fin in the centre
of the bottle because it will have an equal amount of buyoncy on both sides of the bottle. The
controlles variables or the constants (what I keep the same) in my experiment was the submarine

properley. This is becuase wothout one, the submarine seems to move randomly without a specific
dorection. However, when a stabalizing fin is present, the submarine moves at a specific rate and
direction. I also found out that if you move the fin to the right, the bottle will turn right aswell, and
same goes for the left side. The more right/left you push the fin, the wider the turns get, while if
you move the fin a little, the turns are quite sharp. According to my experiment, the best position
for the stabalizing fin was in the middle of the bottle because the submarine seems to move at a

2017 where PMTV has never been detected. Collected soil was dried at ambient temperature then
pulverized and stored at cold room (4 в„ѓ). Subsamples of soils were sterilized by autoclaving twice
at 121 C for 60 minutes before storing at 4 в„ѓ.
Soil was artificially contaminated with PMTV using Sporosori of Spongospora Subterranea

Analysis Of The Movie Return Streak And Winning A...
Manassas is an inner city high school in North Memphis Tennessee with a poorly funned football
program that holds a 110 year losing streak. Each individual athlete faces internal and external
challenges of growing up in a poor and dangerous neighborhood with little or no parental guidance
at all. Coach Bill Courtney devotes the majority of his time to Manassas s football program and
also steps in as a father figure to many of these boys and unites the team. In return, this causes the
team to perform better on the field, thus, breaking Manassas s losing streak and winning a playoff
game. In this documentary there was a mental skill that stood out the most, in particular, group
dynamics/ cohesion. Throughout the team s football season coach Courtney helps the boys feel
closer with their fellow teammates, thus, resulting in each individual to look out for one another.
With that said, in the movie the team worked together to achieve a common goal which was to win
a playoff game while also working on individual interpersonal relationships with other teammates.
With that in mind, different elements of task and social cohesion are emphasized in this
documentary. The theoretical development of group dynamics/ cohesion was exhibited through
O.C. Brown. To illustrate, in the beginning of the film O.C. Brown was a short tempered kid who
only looked out for himself, however, throughout this documentary O.C. Brown begins to improve
on his cohesion with the team and also reveals

One Solution to Global Overfishing Analysis
The first thing that comes to one s mind when fish is mentioned is usually, smelly, nasty, or to
some, delicious. In a nutritional aspect, fish is a top priority in a diet because of the protein that it
has. Many people fish for food, or just for leisure. Overfishing mainly started in the 19th century,
when humans started looking for blubber for oil lamps, which they used for light during the night.
When humans started overfishing for the whale blubber it severely reduced and damaged the whole
population of the sea life. In the fishpopulation, many fish such as the Atlantic cod and herring
were overfished to the point where they almost went extinct by the mid 1900 s. The depletion of the
fish population disrupted the aquatic food... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There have been many incidents where innocent lifeguards and individuals have been attacked by
sharks and other dangerous fish while spending time in waters. The overfishing of the shark s prey
has causes this. This is a very dangerous issue as it may take many lives away for nothing.
Another major cause is the subsides provided to fishermen from the government. Despite the
depleted state of the oceans, many governments provide major subsidies to their fishing sectors.
According to The Webster Merriam Dictionary, a subsidy is money that is paid usually by a
government to keep the price of a product or service low or to help a business or organization to
continue to function. Subsidies not only distort markets and support uneconomic activities, but also
are a major incentive to overfishing and other destructive fishing practices. These large subsidies
have helped produce a worldwide fishing fleet that is up to 250 percent larger than what is needed
to fish at sustainable levels (Fisheries Subsidies, Overcapacity and Overfishing, 2008). Some
subsidies support beneficial programs, such as management and research for overfishing. However,
the majority of subsidies influence the increase and intensity of overfishing. These subsidies
include those that reduce costs or enhance revenues and promote overcapacity, such as support for
boat construction and modernization, fuel, equipment, and other operating costs (EcoWatch, 2011).

Over the recent decades, the public sectors of the countries have implemented considerable reforms

The National Security Language Initiative For Youth
Last semester I was in India with a study abroad program sponsored by the State Department. The
National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI Y) was created in part to learn languages
not often spoken in the United States but also to create cross cultural education and understanding.
World peace can be achieved by broadening each other s perspectives through everyday
interactions. This idea forms an essential part of NSLI Y s mission: that we can improve
understanding between our country and others, and this is achievable if each one of us decides to
be the change that we hope to see in our communities. This mission aligns with both my personal
and future professional missions, and as a NSLI Y student and alumna, I am able to be ambassador,
building connections between communities through everyday interactions, volunteering, and
speaking about my study abroad experience. Therefore, as a study abroad participant, perhaps the
most simple, but one of the most important ways, to promote intercultural learning is to get
involved. As a member of my host community, I was able to open my ears and mind to every
opportunity available to me to participate in my community: through everyday traditions and once a
year celebrations, school activities, volunteer opportunities, and religious and extracurricular
activities. I said yes to all of the new opportunities that presented themselves to me, whether it was
trying a new, unidentifiable food or running a 5K. I let my passion

Executive Functions In Older Adults Essay
Introduction The present paper reviews the benefits of exercise on executive functions in older
adults and discusses a potential mechanism through which exercise may change the way the brain
processes information for better cognitive outcomes. Specifically, older adults who are more
physically active demonstrate a shift toward local neural processing that is associated with better
executive functions. We discuss the use of neural complexity as a sensitive measure of the neural
network plasticity that is enhanced through exercise. We conclude by highlighting the future work
needed to improve exercise prescriptions that help older adults maintain their cognitive and physical
functions for longer into their lifespan.

Age related neuromuscular junction (NMJ) plays a key role in musculoskeletal impairment that
occurs with aging. Changes in the NMJ precede or follow the decline of muscle mass and strength
remains unresolved. When a motor neuron is lost, fibers previously innervated by that neuron,
defined as a motor unit, are no longer controlled by the nervous system and fail to contribute to the
force generated during a volitional muscle contraction. In the attempt to counteract the functional
consequence of this process, denervated orphan fibers express proteins and produce chemotactic
signals that stimulate the sprouting of new dendrites from residual motor neurons. This process
leads re innervation by the expansion of pre existing motor units and is aimed at returning to
function previously denervated muscle fibers. There is evidence that this compensatory mechanism
starts failing with aging. The reason for a progressive impairment of the re innervation process with
aging is unknown, but some lines of evidence point to changes that occur with aging in the
neuromuscular junction (NMJ), which is the synaptic interface between a branch of a motor neuron
and muscle cells. The NMJ is composed of three elements: pre synaptic, intrasynaptic, and post
synaptic part. The function of the NMJ is to transmit signals from the motor neuron to the skeletal
muscle fibre quickly and

The Impact of the Tuberculosis Vaccine Essay
The Impact of the Tuberculosis Vaccine
Abstract
Tuberculosis is one of the most infectious diseases in the world. With almost one third of the world
infected with this virus, people are striving to help prevent the spread of this disease (NIAID,
2001). One prevention technique for tuberculosis is the BCG (Bacillus of Calmette and Guerin)
vaccine. In the early twentieth century Calmette and Guerin worked together to isolate a strain of
the disease creating the first BCG vaccine. Throughout the century the scientists improved the BCG
vaccine and today there are several different strains of the vaccine available. However, even today
its full effects on the disease are unknown. The exploration of the effects of the vaccine, the best ...

Tuberculosis Vaccine Page 2 organism, it will hopefully have adapted enough to the strain of
Mycobacterium bovis to immediately contain the Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The goal of the
vaccine is to keep the body functioning normally, even after contact with Mycobacterium

The BCG vaccine was first created in the early twentieth century. In 1906, in Paris, scientists
Calmette and Guerin began experimenting with the vaccine for tuberculosis (NIAID, 2001).
They isolated a strain of Mycobacterium bovis from a cow and began their experimentation on
the living organism. After running tests on animals for over a decade, genetic changes began
occurring in the original strain; this new strain was called the BCG vaccine. In Europe, in 1921,
Calmette and Guerin introduced their vaccine to their first human subjects (WHO, 5). They fed
the vaccine to baby patients orally. By 1928, the Health Committee of the League of Nations
admitted it into use (Pediatric Research, 2002). Tuberculosis got off to a rocky start when it was
first administered. In Lubeck, Germany, almost a quarter of the babies given the BCG vaccine got
the tuberculosis disease or infection from the vaccine itself. The scandal caused general public to
be skeptical of the vaccine. Following the outbreak, it was discovered that the vaccine had been

Analysis Of The Marble Column From The Temple Of Artemis...
The marble column from the Temple of Artemis at Sardis is from the Hellenistic period and can
be visited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC. It is part of the Ancient Greek exhibition.
This column stands over fifty eight feet high at the center of a room. Overall, it looks smooth and
very large. At the capital, the delicate foliate is symmetrically decorated with fine details. The
capital is slightly smaller than others found at the site, indicating that it does not belong to the outer
colonnade . Because this column was from the Ancient Greeks, we can assume that the sculptor
will focus on symmetry, fine details and perfect execution because these were characteristics
present in most of the art. The column was part of a temple dedicated to the goddess of the
wildness and childbirth, Artemis. The people in Sardis would worship her for a good harvest year
because most Ancient Greeks were polytheistic and believed that different Gods had different
attributes that could help them grant their wishes.
The column was standing by itself in the center of the hall, tall and impressive. Feelings of awe
caused viewers to reach out and touch the column, as if they could not believe that this marvelous
column was in front of them. Angry yet patience guards reminded them that this column is part of
the museum exhibition and not of a temple. In Ancient Greece, this column would have been part

The Link Between Social Interactions Among Peers And...
Introduction
Problem Formulation
Researchers have been discussing the link between social interactions among peers in school and
academic outcomes for over 40 years (Coleman, 1961). Children are categorized by the people they
associate with. Understanding the way social interactions affect academic achievement is
important. Major issue in the literature on peer pressure quality special mention are: cultural
patterns penalizing academic achievement and changes in the effect of peers over time.
Academics argue that peer pressure effects become important during adolescence (Steinberg, 1996).
Some literature says that is a cultural pattern within the African American and Latino population
where students discourage academic achievement (Ogbu, 1986). The purpose of this study is to
explain academic achievement by analyzing four factors: the peer pressure effect on students,
gender, and student s particular interest for education compared to their peers, and race and
ethnicity.
This research relates to social work in many ways. Social workers find this research important
because during the adolescent stage, students are finding their own personal identity and their
identity among their peers. Students are also learning how to socialize. They socialize with peers
who may share the same goals as one another. Students may also socialize with those peers that
have the same intellectual vocabulary as one another.

The Authoritative Parenting And The Style Of The Parenting...
The parenting style that my parents use is definitely authoritative. My parents have shown
authority towards me and my siblings but have always been flexible with their rules. My parents
have never stressed us out by being too strict with their rules. The first question I asked my
parents was, how would you react if one of my siblings or I asked to come home later than you
originally told us to come home? My parents responded that they would ask why we want to
come home later and then tell them they can come home later at a certain time but no later than
the extended time. This fits exactly with the authoritative parenting style because my parents
would extend the time which is being flexible and then also they would enforce a new time for
us to come home which shows authority. Next I asked my parents, what would you do if one of
my siblings or I got in trouble at school? My parents said they would have a talk with whoever
got in trouble and make sure they know not to ever do it again. Also, my parents said they would
discipline whoever got in trouble by doing more chores or taking away their phone for a day.
This fits with the authoritative parenting style as well because my parents are making us
understand what we did wrong and learn from it. They would also give a consequence because of
it but nothing that is too harsh because they trust us to learn from what we did. After that, I asked
my parents, what would your reaction be if I did not do my chores at the house?

The Social Institution Of Education
Education is perceived by society as a means to achieve high levels of success in all aspects of life.
Although steps have been taken to afford individuals the opportunity to obtain an education, there
still lies an inequality and therefore, a social problem is created. Using the sociological
perspectives of functionalist, conflict, feminist, and interactionist, we can see how each perspective
views how this inequality becomes prevalent and how social, as well as economic inequalities of
society are inherited through education. Functionalist define a social problem by looking for the
functions and dysfunctions of a given topic. The main function of the social institution of education
is to educate. Functionalists argue that education struggles to complete it s intended task of
education the youth due to the additional tasks that the institution has been assigned. The
educational system has taken on roles that normally would be the functions of other social
institutions. The education system provides services to students and parents for various problems
that they may have. It provides services for students who my have emotional needs, physical
challenges, as well as provide classes for parents.
Conflict theorists view education as a divider, rather than an equalizer. Conflict theorists focus on
social and economic inequalities inherent in our educational system. They also focus on how the
system perpetuates these inequalities. Depending on their social backgrounds,

Diego Rivera didn t have chance to be with her because he has lots of work. Been alone made her

As I already mention, she divides the picture in two. Her right represents Mexico and it has lots
of symbolical representation. The juxtapositions of the sun and moon represent the Azteca
culture and how they believe that the opposites like man and women, life and death, define life.
(PBS.org.). The Pre Columbian temple represents the rejection that she has to European
traditions. She also has two fertility dolls and their position represent the cycle of life and death.
In my opinion she paints this dolls to represent how she feels because she can t have babies. She
also has a Skulls that represents Mexican culture of death. The skulls is in most of Frida s
paintings. She painted because she has been in the edge of death . I also think that she paint the
skull because sometimes she wants to be death. She was obsessed with her husband Diego Rivera
but he didn t respect her feelings and he cheat her several times. The flowers and the clouds
represent the natural surrounding that Mexico has. In contrast she represents the United Sates with

Without Jerry s influence, the Grateful Dead would not have it s distinct earthy timbre or feel that
has been extremely significant in attracting their particular following.
Another contribution to the Dead s style was bassist Phil Lesh. With only formal jazz training on
the trumpet, Lesh picked up a bass and learned as he went while playing with the Grateful Dead s
then nucleus, The Warlocks. Lesh is famous for his jazz improvisational style. This particular style
usually finds his fingers running up and down the neck of a five or six string bass (seen right),
dropping what are affectionately known to fans as quot;Phil Bombs quot;, furiously low frequency
notes that tend to rumble in auditoriums and can only be created with a five or six string bass. As
one can well imagine, these two aforementioned styles together could create somewhat of an
interesting style. Well, it only gets better.
Bill Kreutzmann, the quot;heartbeat quot; of the Grateful Dead, had been behind a kit since the
age of eleven when Jerry Garcia met him in 1962. His early love of drums allowed him to be
heavily involved in the quot;rock and roll quot; scene. As a teen, Kreutzmann even created rock in
roll bands in which to play, as the interest was barely there. After meeting

Albigence Waldo Essay
There comes a soldier, his bare feet are seen thro his worn out shoes, his legs nearly naked from
the tatter d remains of an only pair of stockings... (Dr. Albigence Waldo, 1777) Dr. Waldo was
one of the thousands of soldiers barely scraping themselves through this mess. Sick soldiers, small
huts, poor ventilation, and vomiting. These are only some of the poor conditions at the American
Revolution winter camp known as Valley Forge. In the winter of 1777, soldiers were living under
ruthless predicaments with a 10% probability of death. Smallpox was spreading fast and many
would never see their family again. Washington s position as a general was being doubted by
members of congress, instead assuming that his leadership efforts will lead the Americans to
retreat. A soldierin the Continental Congress should leave, because of the rapid increase of death
and illness, living conditions in camp,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One poor condition that the continental army faced was the unbearable sickness. For instance Dr.
Albigence Waldo states, I am sick discontented and out of humour. (Dr. Albigence Waldo, 1777).
This shows that, from where they have started the living conditions have not improved. Dr.
Albigence Waldo also writes, Poor food hard lodging cold weather fatigue Nasty cloaths nasty
Cookery Vomit half my time smoak d out my senses... (Dr. Albigence Waldo, 1777) This statement
describes the terrible food, the sickness, the ripped clothes, and the terrible environment.
Furthermore, Dr. Albigence Waldo records, Heartily wish myself at home, my skin and eyes are
almost spoil d with continual smoke. (Dr. Albigence Waldo, 1777) Particularly, this shows the
quality of ventilation that the soldiers are bearing with. These living conditions have shown, that
the congress can t support them and give the army enough money for food or clothes at the very

The Important Aspects Of The Catholic Church
Elizabeth Stevinson
110 C
Catholicism is a world renowned faith and has expanded throughout history to become one of the
largest faiths known today. Two of the important aspects of the Catholic Church are the worship
rituals and the texts of the Sacred Scriptures. The worship rituals are important within the Catholic
church, because many rituals are used to Increase faith and to advance oneself to a higher state of
spiritual perfection. (Why The Rituals)
The sacraments are designed to build up the body of Christ and to worship God. It is also another
way to nourish and further strengthen our relationship with Christ as our lives progresses.
(Sacraments of the Catholic Church.)
Norton Herbst states in his article The term catholic comes from the Greek word katholikД“ which
means according to the whole or universal. The difference between (Protestantism and Catholicism).
The term was designated for the most accepted form of faith passed down from the first followers
of Christ. The worship rituals in the Catholic Church and the importance of the Scriptures make
Catholicism unique and help create something that has never been known.
The worship rituals in the Catholic Church include, mass, baptism, confession, anointing of the
sick, confirmation and Eucharist. The word mass is described as the source and summit of
Christian life. (The Eucharist: The source and summit of the Christian).
For centuries the Mass was celebrated almost all in Latin and was only based on

Juxtaposition The Blackamoors
The Blackamoors, representing black Africans, with their lowly status was a comforting
juxtaposition to the white wealthy aristocrat s fickle status position (pg.40 41). Additionally, the
Blackamoors worked to silently justify the slave trade in the minds of the white French aristocrat s
psyche (pg.54 55, 97 98). Whether being carved into furniture meant to hold the white Europeans
body or the Blackamoors faces designed with an inanimate benevolent expression towards their
white owners, agency and humanity were removed (pg.55). Indeed, the Blackamoors ever present,
docile expression, communicated to the white owner that the black African not only consented to
his enslavement, but enjoyed his servitude and was pleased to serve the white... Show more content

Therefore, it is only predictable that white French aristocrat s commissioned Blackamoors in
large numbers to reside in their homes. Blackamoors reminded white French owners of France s
wealth, the subjugation of black Africans, and supported a false pretense of African and Asian
inferiority in relation to Europe. However, most importantly, Blackamoors prompted their owners
to adopt a fortified white European colonizer identity that offered imagined power over peoples,
cultures, and the world. Similarly, white French aristocrat s possession of Blackamoors also
represented a desire to control time. By attempting to reduce the aliveness of black Africans to
eternal reminders of the slave trade, white French aristocrats were attempting to preserve a
prosperous time in French society (pg.41). However, the Blackamoors served another purpose in
relation to perseration, the white French aristocrat s economic and psychological dependence on
black Africans were similarly eternalized. The intimacy of violence that would bind white French
aristocrat s psyche and luxurious life to black African slave labor, eloquently made false any
possible French claim of cultural or moral

Tom Brennan Speech Outline
Good morning Teachers. New stages of life can often introduce change within a persons and
cause them to reassess who they are and what they value. These changes can surface due to
transitions faced by the individual and new relationships formed during this time, which allow
the individual to experience a personal transformation. The Story of Tom Brennan by J.C Bourke
and The Dead Poets Society both explore these concepts through the use of characters who
transform due to changes in their lives, which lead to a reevaluation of who they are and what
they value. In The Story of Tom Brennan by J.C Bourke , Tom s life completely changed due to
his brother, Daniel s, drink diving accident which left two people dead and one quadriplegic... Show

top of the hill with ease, this symbolic moment allows Tom to reflect of his transition personally
and how important his relationships with Brendan and Chrissy have been in supporting him.
Tom s thoughts of shedding with each kilometre, like layers of skin falling onto the track as he
runs with Brendan is a simile which allows the reader to understand how Tom is feeling and the
relief of not having the weight on his shoulders anymore. This achievement and realisation
symbolises the growth and change in values and perspective of self that have been achieved
through the support of new relationships which have allowed Tom to overcome past events.
Peter Weir s, The Dead Poets Society closely to The Story of Tom Brennan explores the life of an
individual Todd Anderson who s life changes once accepted into the prestigious Welton
Academy where new relationships are developed. The readers are introduced to Todd as a quiet,
introverted student who is unwilling to be apart of the new community. This is shown when Mr
Nolan says speak up Anderson , this displays how fragile and shy Todd is. However his new
relationships with Mr Keating and Neil Perry allow Todd to feel comfortable to be himself and

Should Child Beauty Pageants Be Allowed
Every year, about five thousand child beauty pageants are held, with over 250,000 contestants.
These beauty pageants, in which children compete for prizes and money, have been around since
the late 1800s and were derived off of women beauty pageants. However, what many people do not
realize is how damaging these contests can be for young children. Many countries, such as France,
have banned beauty pageants for those under the age of sixteen, hoping that other countries would
do the same. Despite this, the United States still has not taken any action about it. Childbeauty
pageants should not be allowed for many different reasons.
One of the reasons why child beauty pageants should not be allowed is because it can cause low
self confidence. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is a logical argument, as the point of these pageants is to recognize the best contestant, and
award them. Though the winner of the contest would be winning a generous amount of money,
there would be a lot of money being spent as well, and for contestants who do not win, it would
be a waste. For example, entry fees to contests usually cost as much as 400 dollars, dresses and
costumes cost hundreds of dollars, and coaching lessons cost money as well. On top of all that, is
it really worth risking health issues for a chance to win a beauty contest? There can be only one
winner, so the rest of the contestants are going to think that they are not good enough to be
victorious, which causes low self confidence. This is going to lead children to compare themselves
to others and try to change. Studies have shown that about 50% of previous beauty pageant
contestants between the ages of eleven and sixteen have considered getting cosmetic surgery, trying
to look like others, or changing what they do not like about themselves. It is not worth to
jeopardize all the health issues that can be caused by these contests just to have a chance to win

The School Of A Charter School
Being in a charter school, the academic school day is much different than in a public school. My
CT, has to have her lesson plan turned in and approved at least 2 weeks prior to the lesson. There
is no room for error, let alone the students not understanding any lesson. If a lesson is taught on a
Monday, the classroom will be moving on to the next lesson on Tuesday, regardless if the students
understand the lesson or not. There is also no differentiation in the classroom. All of the students
are given the same materials, lessons and the same amount of help. There are students with IEP s
and students with their English at basic proficiency levels. The only time that instruction is
differentiated is when one specific student struggles with... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The students should be instructed to use scaffolding and the teacher should be able to gage when
the students are starting to understand the information and send the individuals to their seats as she
sees fit.
When it comes to differentiated instruction, there is none. When it comes to the student whose L1
is not English, she is stuck guessing on many of their assessments. Many times, the language of the
test is content specific academic language, which is much more difficult for the individual to
understand. This could easily be adjusted by, making sure the student is taught the specific
language throughout the lesson and unit. Another course of action would be to differentiate the
assessment by adjusting the language so that the L2 is comprehensible to the student.
Language Allocation in Classroom Within the Spanish speaking community at this charter school,
there is little to no L1 used during the school day. The students instruction does now allow for the
individuals L1 to be used. Occasionally, when the students are not having a silent lunch or when
they are given recess, there will be murmurs in the students L1. Aside from the occasional
conversations during recess or lunch time, the students do not speak in their native language at
school. The teacher does

Bipolar Disorder ( Bipolar ) Essay
Bipolar Disorder or manic depressive disorder is a disorder characterized by highs, manias, and
lows, depressions, and can therefore be easily distinguished from unipolar depression, a major
depressive disorder in DSM 5, by the presence of manic or hypomanic episodes (Miklowitz
Gitlin, 2014). Bipolar disorder is generally an episodic, lifelong illness with a variable course
(American Psychiatric Association, 2010). There are two classifications of bipolar disorder;
bipolar I disorder and bipolar II disorder. If the episodes are primarily manic but there has been at
least one depressive episode, the diagnosis is bipolar I disorder (Early, 2009). If the episodes are
primarily depressed but there has been at least one episode of hypomania, increased mood that is
more euphoric than normal but not quite manic, the diagnosis is bipolar II disorder (Early, 2009).
A manic episode is characterized by an abnormality of mood that is euphoric, expansive, and
elevated or irritable with increased energy, along with signs and symptoms such as inflated self
esteem or grandiosity, decreased need for sleep. Pressure of speech or being extremely talkative,
racing thoughts or flight of ideas, distractibility, an increase in goal directed behavior, agitation,
poor judgment and impulsive decision making are more signs and symptoms of a manic episode. A
manic episode can result in unwise and potentially dangerous behavior. Destructive behaviors can
often occur with spending money, sexual

Essay about North Korea
This article deals with the United States and its attempts to deal with the dangerous matters of
North Korea. Some of the problems that were brought up in this article were North Korea s plan to
restart a plutonium based nuclear program at Yongbyon, North Korea s plan to build a new highly
enriched uranium (HEU) nuclear program, and the tension that emerged between the United States
and South Korea. Even though many problems were occurring, there were some positive things that
were happening at the time. The United States began negotiating with NorthKorea and South Korea
about establishing railroad links, demining portions of the demilitarized zone, allowing athletes to
compete in the Asian games, and allowing abductees to visit Japan.... Show more content on

There also have been various reasons why North Korea revealed to us their HEU plan. One theory
is that they wanted us to notice them. They did not want us to disengage and isolate from them.
At the beginning, our response to North Korea s HEU and plutonium programs was very hostile
and involved condemning them. Eventually, we took little baby steps to ease the tension. We also
agreed to talk to them, but limited the things we could talk about with them. At the very time all of
this chaos is happening, our relationship with the South Korea is reaching an all time low.
I think there are many things that the United States has to do in order to resolve the problems
that are occurring and to prevent more problems from happening in the future. The first thing that
I think the United States should do is to treat them as nicely as possible, even if it means going
against what we believe and letting them get away with bad behavior. In the long run it might be a
bad thing to do because it could influence other nations to think that they can walk over us and
take advantage of us. However, I think it would be the correct thing to do right now because the
last thing anyone wants is a nation that is angry with you that holds nuclear weapons. If, however,
North Korea refuses to accept our proposal for negotiations and does not agree with anything that
we have to offer, I think the only other option is to attack them with

Working Towards Your Dream Job
Working Towards Your Dream Job At some point in our lives, the majority of us will find ourselves
searching for a job. From deciding what position you want, to following up after an interview, you
must be intentional about your decisions throughout the job search process. Figuring out the job
you actually wantmight be the toughest and most important part of this. If you are working on a
degree or certification for a specific career, my advice is to search for an entry level position
with a company that you will be able to use your degree/certification in one day. Even if filing
documents or sweeping a warehouse isn t your dream job, doing these tasks at your dream
company is one of the best ways to realize your long term goal. This will not only be beneficial to
you, as you will be getting firsthand experience with the company to see if it is a place you
really want to work for, but the hiring manager for the entry level position could see you as a
long term investment, which will give you a leg up on the competition. Also, most companies
prefer to promote within the organization, so once you complete your degree and a position is
open, you will have that extra boost in your favor. Once you decide what job you re after, you need
to prepare your resume. The resume should be clean, simple, and no more than two pages. Keep it
updated with any major accomplishments, but other than that, leave it alone. Send your resume
only when you know that the company is hiring for

  • 2. The Darkness of Colonialism and Imperialism in Heart of... The Light and Dark of Colonialism in Heart of Darkness In the opening of his novel, Heart of Darkness, Conrad, through Marlow, establishes his thoughts on colonialism. He says that conquerors only use brute force, nothing to boast of because it arises, by accident, from another s weakness. Marlow compares his subsequent tale of colonialism with that of the Roman colonization of Northern Europe and the fascination associated with such an endeavor. However, Marlow challenges this viewpoint by painting a heinous picture of the horrors of colonialist ventures as we delve deeper into the recesses of the novel. Here we find that Marlow sees colonization as robbery with violence, aggravated murder on a great scale, and men going at ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Like Marlow, Kurtz began his employment with the ivory company with noble intentions: he wants to create a better way of life for the natives. However, because of extreme hardships placed upon him by the manager, Kurtz becomes the dark half of the soul: he symbolizes what Marlow may have become if placed in Kurtz position. As the treacherous villain of the tale the manager, signifies total darkness and blackness of the soul, as he is responsible for the severely unbalanced priorities of the company through the extreme importance given to the obtaining of ivory and the deficiency of importance given to human lives. Conrad also implements minor characters to further the unexpected distinction between dark and light, black and white. The white pilgrims are portrayed as materialistic, ivory hungry opportunists with black souls; their behavior is violent and savage. Contrariwise, the black natives are civil, spiritual, and have white souls. In the beginning of the novel, Conrad creates the fellow seamen who accompany Marlow on his present journey and listen to his tale of the Congo to establish the contrast between the materialistic and the spiritual. The fellow sailors do not understand Marlow s tale and chastise him throughout, showing their reluctance and inability to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. John Steinbeck s The Last Of The Mohicans The book Last of the Mohicans is about a group of Native Americans called the Mohicans. The characters are Hawkeye, his adopted father Chingachgook, and his adopted brother Uncas. They re are the last of the Mohicans, the last of the bloodline. The story takes place in the 18th century during a seven year war between Britain and France. Hawkeye and the Mohicans try to save the daughter of a British colonel when a conflict arises. Magua of the Hurons attempts to kill the Mohicans and kidnap the two girls. Magua is the trouble maker and wants revenge against Col. Munro by trying to marry one of the daughters and hurt his pride. There was a lot of racial conflict between white and Indian race at a time when racism was at its height. The relationship between Chingachgook and Uncas is a bit complicated. Their love for each other isn t portrayed well in the story. It s a distant love that parents and children have endured throughout time. He s very protective of his daughter. She doesn t like how restricting he can be. At times, they re both stubborn toward one another. She gets so mad she wishes she could explode at him. Although she s deeply angry at her father, she loves him more then life itself. Being her wise father, and a child never fully understanding the depths of love from a father; he... No one who loves someone would never behave in a hurtful way. I know it, my father means the world to me. I m positive he d defend my life at all times. • 4. Old Ben And Fox Hunt Comparison Essay Some things can be very similar, but also very different. For example, stories can be different. They have different plots and different authors, but they can also have similar elements and plot ideas. Some examples of that in a story could be that a character makes a friend, or attempts to achieve a goal. In this essay, I will be comparing and contrasting Old Ben and Fox Hunt , two stories with different plots and similar elements. While some similarities are evident between Old Ben and Fox Hunt , the differences are also distinct. There are many similarities between Old Ben and Fox Hunt . One of them is the use of foreshadowing in both narratives. Foreshadowing is when there are indications throughout the text that hint at events to come. In Old Ben , it is foreshadowed that the snake will die in the end. In Fox Hunt , it is foreshadowed that Lee is the fox spirit. Another similarity is that the two stories both have main characters that are either animals, or have animal characteristics, such as Ben from Old Ben , who is a snake, and Andy, from Fox Hunt , who is part fox. A closing similarity is that both of the stories use narrative structure. Narrative structure is when a narrative is arranged in chronological order. Looking at these examples, we ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Conversely, there are also distinct differences. One of those differences is Fox Hunt using flashbacks to tell a story. Flashbacks inform you of events that happened in the past. Old Ben does not use any flashbacks at all. A second differenceis that Old Ben transpires over a longer period of time; months pass during the story. In Fox Hunt , the story only takes place over a few weeks. A concluding difference is that Fox Hunt uses fantasy ideas, such as fox spirits, while Old Ben does not, and only uses real life ideas. Therefore, Old Ben and Fox Hunt are quite different in many ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Mold is, in fact, a fascinating organism which has had many different uses over the years and our lives would not be the same without it. Most of us know that food seems to become moldy more quickly in the summer than in the winter when it is colder. Food in refrigerators seems to keep longer than food left out in the sun. Is this true? Does temperature really affect the rate at which mold grows? Mold grows quicker at higher temperatures. The Book Thief Rhetorical Analysis The Book Thief, written by Australian novelist Markus Zusak, follows a young girl living in Nazi Germany, and employs innovative techniques to convey the central idea of the extremes of human behavior. This central idea was explored through stylistic techniques and conventions such as Death as the narrator, juxtaposition, irony, lack of chronological order, narrative voices, and themes, namely the power of words. In The Book Thief, Markus Zusak used narrative voices to convey extremes of human behavior. The characters through which he conveyed these innovated techniques are Death, the narrator, and Max Vandeburg, a central character. • 10. The Performance Of Sense And Sensibility I went to the performance of Sense and Sensibility on Thursday night and I sat in the second row, which was very close to the performance. The layout of the theatre definitely provided a different perspective depending on where the audience member sat. The theatre was close to completely filled, but there were still a few seats that were empty. Overall the show was my favorite one yet that I have attended at W L. Sense and Sensibilityis written by Kate Hamill who based the script off the novel that was written by Jane Austen. The performance was directed by Stephanie Sandberg and it was presented by the W L Department of Theater, Dance, and Film Studies with special arrangements from Dramatists Play Service Inc. The performers were made up of predominately W L students and after reading their bios it became clear to me that the performers come from many different backgrounds and they have varying levels of experience performing. The audience was made up of primarily elderly couples and families from the surrounding Rockbridge area. I saw some professors in the audience with their families which was great to see. W L students were definitely the minority in the audience that night. The audience reacted very strongly to the actors performance and some members in the front row were actually part of the performance. I remember in Peter Singers article when he talked about the idea of speciesism. He said that it was an attitude of bias that favored the interest of members of their own species (4). The one species is against the other species. Devon: Well, I can see how that is a good argument. Sasha: And the fact that we treat these animals based on intelligence is also ridiculous. Just because a dog does not understand what it means to vote, society should not consider it less intelligent than us. It is a living thing that deserves the best life. Devon: Okay, but Sasha, you have to also remember that these animals do depend on us to continue to live a good life. Without us, they would be put in the wild and be put at risk of dying fast. In Pollan s article, he discussed how animals live longer in captivity and how domesticated animals can t live on their own in the wild (6). Yeah, they will not be living the absolute free life, but they will be protected and nourished if needed. Sasha: Hmmm I never really noticed that. Brethren Woods Camp and Retreat Center encounters this change every year when they orient their summer staff. Last summer, however, a new problem occurred to challenge their organizational culture. During the fifth week of their six week summer camp program, they caught wind from a stakeholder that some of their employees had been in violation of the personnel policy they all signed earlier in the summer. After confirming this information with the employees in question, they were quick to judge the situation. Two employees were fired while the rest were treated to a talking circle. With roots in the Church of the Brethren, it is easy to trace where the organizational culture gets its roots. In fact their mission statement is to provide Christian educational opportunities, facilities, and programs for all ages in an inviting woodland setting; encouraging the formation of Christ centered living, leadership, and stewardship of creation, leading toward wholeness in the kingdom of God (Brethren Woods, 2017). These Christian beliefs are explicit in each camp week as the organization values events including bible study, vespers, and morning watch. They can also be seen in the expectations for employees from the dress code to the housing rules. Brethren Woods also gets much of their funding from Brethren churches surrounding the area. As stakeholders, these churches keep the camp accountable to their values because they do not want to put their money into an organization that does not align with their beliefs. All of these elements of the camp s organizational culture led to the way the handled the problem with their staff. First off, one of the elements of their mission is to form leaders in Christ. With their leaders exhibiting behaviors contrary to these values, something had to be done. Next, there was a culture set by the executive director and two co program directors that they wanted to perpetuate. They could not allow the culture to morph into something against their mission. However, the desert scene and mountains suggest that this was painted in Southern California. In the background, one can see a man leading a pack animal, a woman, and an infant along a road towards the church, identified by the cross on the rooftop. There are no shadows to define form in the background. This is, again, a contrast to the shadows made by the Madonna in the foreground. The lack of shadows, however, does not make the background look flat. The Impressionist styled painting and the lack of detail in the background creates a distant look that gives depth to the painting. The numerous contrasts between the background and the foreground allows the artist to subtly draw the viewer?fs attention towards the foreground. These contrasts help grab the viewer?fs gaze and direct it to the most important part of the painting: the woman and baby. Wayside Madonna has some clear iconography. The woman dominating the foreground is a direct allusion to the Virgin Mary. Seated and holding a sleeping male baby in her arms, a violet robe drapes over the figure. The woman wears a simple white outfit and adoringly looks down towards the baby. This depiction is very similar to the common depiction of the Virgin Mary holding baby Jesus in religious European art. An important difference between the European religious Virgin Mary and Wayside Madonna is the skin color. The Virgin Mary in European art is often painted as white skinned. ... The majority of schools are public, free, and state run (ecoles publiques). Some private schools (sous contrat) exist that are run and subsidized by the French government, which charge nominal fees. Fully independent private schools exist (ecoles prives hors contrat), which are fee paying. These independent private scgools can be religiously oriented, or international / bilingual. The learning style tends to be of a traditional nature, which entails classroom learning, testing, and discipline. French schools value the authority of the teacher, competition, evaluating through grading, and analytical thinking over creativity. Class sizes tend to be large, with 30 or more students per class. Teachers teach one subject in most scenarios, which is typical of the traditional method. Changes have been presented to reform the French schooling system, but is met with opposition that prefers the traditional method. French schooling is split up into three primary and secondary levels: primary school (Г©cole), middle school (collГЁge), and high school (lycГ©e). An auteur, usually a director, has a strong personal style and exercises creative control over his or her works. Quentin Tarentino, for example, has proven himself to be an auteur in various ways. Quentin Tarentino worked for four years as a clerk in a Los Angeles video store, where he made his feature directorial and screenwriting debut of Reservoir Dogs, and where he further expanded his great knowledge of film. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The last very brutal scene of the movie is when the whole crew of gangsters hold guns that are pointed at each other for the sake of Mr. Orange s life. Eventually, the whole gang ends up dying, even Mr. Orange. When he confesses to being a cop Mr. White puts a bullet in his head and is instantly killed by the police officers that came in for the bust. All this violence portrays many things about the film and about what Tarentino is trying to suggest. He manifests these gangster characters with such disregard to living, going to jail, and swearing simply to show the audience how he believes criminals act. Quentin therefore tries to present a criminal lifestyle as it most likely is, not worth it. He suggests that a life of crime and violence leads to dead ends such as jail, death, or predicaments such as having an informant on a well planned out diamond heist. Quentin Tarentino uses tracking shots that also leave his mark on the movies he directs. For instance, when Mr. Blonde starts to lead his fellow criminals out to the car to look at the cop he has captured. The camera begins to follow the group out to the car from their backsides, and then opens up to the outside of the warehouse, from dark to light. This shows the criminals containment in the warehouse; in a way trapped from leaving. When they arrive to the car, the camera shows the criminals from a low angle. This represents their power over the cop, and the feelings they hold for their superiority over law, when ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Poe does this by utilizing the various sounds of bells and giving them some human characteristics. Each individual sound of the bellsexpress certain moods to coincide with what they mean or represent. The silver bells represent the happiest stage of a human s life. If overviews are skipped, historical analysis can get bogged down in details, which can potentially lead to seeing the forest for the trees. When humans started overfishing for the whale blubber it severely reduced and damaged the whole population of the sea life. There have been many incidents where innocent lifeguards and individuals have been attacked by sharks and other dangerous fish while spending time in waters. The overfishing of the shark s prey has causes this. This is a very dangerous issue as it may take many lives away for nothing. Another major cause is the subsides provided to fishermen from the government. Despite the depleted state of the oceans, many governments provide major subsidies to their fishing sectors. According to The Webster Merriam Dictionary, a subsidy is money that is paid usually by a government to keep the price of a product or service low or to help a business or organization to continue to function. Subsidies not only distort markets and support uneconomic activities, but also are a major incentive to overfishing and other destructive fishing practices. These large subsidies have helped produce a worldwide fishing fleet that is up to 250 percent larger than what is needed to fish at sustainable levels (Fisheries Subsidies, Overcapacity and Overfishing, 2008). Some subsidies support beneficial programs, such as management and research for overfishing. However, the majority of subsidies influence the increase and intensity of overfishing. • 31. The National Security Language Initiative For Youth Last semester I was in India with a study abroad program sponsored by the State Department. The National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI Y) was created in part to learn languages not often spoken in the United States but also to create cross cultural education and understanding. World peace can be achieved by broadening each other s perspectives through everyday interactions. This idea forms an essential part of NSLI Y s mission: that we can improve understanding between our country and others, and this is achievable if each one of us decides to be the change that we hope to see in our communities. This mission aligns with both my personal and future professional missions, and as a NSLI Y student and alumna, I am able to be ambassador, building connections between communities through everyday interactions, volunteering, and speaking about my study abroad experience. Therefore, as a study abroad participant, perhaps the most simple, but one of the most important ways, to promote intercultural learning is to get involved. As a member of my host community, I was able to open my ears and mind to every opportunity available to me to participate in my community: through everyday traditions and once a year celebrations, school activities, volunteer opportunities, and religious and extracurricular activities. • 32. Executive Functions In Older Adults Essay Introduction The present paper reviews the benefits of exercise on executive functions in older adults and discusses a potential mechanism through which exercise may change the way the brain processes information for better cognitive outcomes. Specifically, older adults who are more physically active demonstrate a shift toward local neural processing that is associated with better executive functions. We discuss the use of neural complexity as a sensitive measure of the neural network plasticity that is enhanced through exercise. We conclude by highlighting the future work needed to improve exercise prescriptions that help older adults maintain their cognitive and physical functions for longer into their lifespan. Anatomy Physiology The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Age related neuromuscular junction (NMJ) plays a key role in musculoskeletal impairment that occurs with aging. Changes in the NMJ precede or follow the decline of muscle mass and strength remains unresolved. When a motor neuron is lost, fibers previously innervated by that neuron, defined as a motor unit, are no longer controlled by the nervous system and fail to contribute to the force generated during a volitional muscle contraction. In the attempt to counteract the functional consequence of this process, denervated orphan fibers express proteins and produce chemotactic signals that stimulate the sprouting of new dendrites from residual motor neurons. This process leads re innervation by the expansion of pre existing motor units and is aimed at returning to function previously denervated muscle fibers. There is evidence that this compensatory mechanism starts failing with aging. The reason for a progressive impairment of the re innervation process with aging is unknown, but some lines of evidence point to changes that occur with aging in the neuromuscular junction (NMJ), which is the synaptic interface between a branch of a motor neuron and muscle cells. The NMJ is composed of three elements: pre synaptic, intrasynaptic, and post synaptic part. The function of the NMJ is to transmit signals from the motor neuron to the skeletal muscle fibre quickly and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

With almost one third of the world infected with this virus, people are striving to help prevent the spread of this disease (NIAID, 2001). One prevention technique for tuberculosis is the BCG (Bacillus of Calmette and Guerin) vaccine. In the early twentieth century Calmette and Guerin worked together to isolate a strain of the disease creating the first BCG vaccine. Throughout the century the scientists improved the BCG vaccine and today there are several different strains of the vaccine available. However, even today its full effects on the disease are unknown. When the body is finally faced with the Tuberculosis Vaccine Page 2 organism, it will hopefully have adapted enough to the strain of Mycobacterium bovis to immediately contain the Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The goal of the vaccine is to keep the body functioning normally, even after contact with Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The BCG vaccine was first created in the early twentieth century. In 1906, in Paris, scientists Calmette and Guerin began experimenting with the vaccine for tuberculosis (NIAID, 2001). They isolated a strain of Mycobacterium bovis from a cow and began their experimentation on the living organism. After running tests on animals for over a decade, genetic changes began occurring in the original strain; this new strain was called the BCG vaccine. In Europe, in 1921, Calmette and Guerin introduced their vaccine to their first human subjects (WHO, 5). They fed the vaccine to baby patients orally. By 1928, the Health Committee of the League of Nations admitted it into use (Pediatric Research, 2002). Tuberculosis got off to a rocky start when it was first administered. In Lubeck, Germany, almost a quarter of the babies given the BCG vaccine got the tuberculosis disease or infection from the vaccine itself. • 34. Analysis Of The Marble Column From The Temple Of Artemis... The marble column from the Temple of Artemis at Sardis is from the Hellenistic period and can be visited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC. It is part of the Ancient Greek exhibition. This column stands over fifty eight feet high at the center of a room. Overall, it looks smooth and very large. At the capital, the delicate foliate is symmetrically decorated with fine details. The capital is slightly smaller than others found at the site, indicating that it does not belong to the outer colonnade . Because this column was from the Ancient Greeks, we can assume that the sculptor will focus on symmetry, fine details and perfect execution because these were characteristics present in most of the art. The column was part of a temple dedicated to the goddess of the wildness and childbirth, Artemis. The people in Sardis would worship her for a good harvest year because most Ancient Greeks were polytheistic and believed that different Gods had different attributes that could help them grant their wishes. The column was standing by itself in the center of the hall, tall and impressive. Feelings of awe caused viewers to reach out and touch the column, as if they could not believe that this marvelous column was in front of them. • 36. The Link Between Social Interactions Among Peers And... Introduction Problem Formulation Researchers have been discussing the link between social interactions among peers in school and academic outcomes for over 40 years (Coleman, 1961). Children are categorized by the people they associate with. Understanding the way social interactions affect academic achievement is important. Major issue in the literature on peer pressure quality special mention are: cultural patterns penalizing academic achievement and changes in the effect of peers over time. Academics argue that peer pressure effects become important during adolescence (Steinberg, 1996). Some literature says that is a cultural pattern within the African American and Latino population where students discourage academic achievement (Ogbu, 1986). The purpose of this study is to explain academic achievement by analyzing four factors: the peer pressure effect on students, gender, and student s particular interest for education compared to their peers, and race and ethnicity. This research relates to social work in many ways. Social workers find this research important because during the adolescent stage, students are finding their own personal identity and their identity among their peers. Students are also learning how to socialize. They socialize with peers who may share the same goals as one another. Students may also socialize with those peers that have the same intellectual vocabulary as one another. Literature Review Introduction The purpose of this study is to ... My parents have shown authority towards me and my siblings but have always been flexible with their rules. My parents have never stressed us out by being too strict with their rules. The first question I asked my parents was, how would you react if one of my siblings or I asked to come home later than you originally told us to come home? My parents responded that they would ask why we want to come home later and then tell them they can come home later at a certain time but no later than the extended time. This fits exactly with the authoritative parenting style because my parents would extend the time which is being flexible and then also they would enforce a new time for us to come home which shows authority. Next I asked my parents, what would you do if one of my siblings or I got in trouble at school? My parents said they would have a talk with whoever got in trouble and make sure they know not to ever do it again. Also, my parents said they would discipline whoever got in trouble by doing more chores or taking away their phone for a day. This fits with the authoritative parenting style as well because my parents are making us understand what we did wrong and learn from it. They would also give a consequence because of it but nothing that is too harsh because they trust us to learn from what we did. • 38. The Social Institution Of Education Education is perceived by society as a means to achieve high levels of success in all aspects of life. Although steps have been taken to afford individuals the opportunity to obtain an education, there still lies an inequality and therefore, a social problem is created. Using the sociological perspectives of functionalist, conflict, feminist, and interactionist, we can see how each perspective views how this inequality becomes prevalent and how social, as well as economic inequalities of society are inherited through education. Functionalist define a social problem by looking for the functions and dysfunctions of a given topic. The main function of the social institution of education is to educate. Functionalists argue that education struggles to complete it s intended task of education the youth due to the additional tasks that the institution has been assigned. The educational system has taken on roles that normally would be the functions of other social institutions. The education system provides services to students and parents for various problems that they may have. It provides services for students who my have emotional needs, physical challenges, as well as provide classes for parents. Conflict theorists view education as a divider, rather than an equalizer. Bipolar Disorder ( Bipolar ) Essay Bipolar Disorder or manic depressive disorder is a disorder characterized by highs, manias, and lows, depressions, and can therefore be easily distinguished from unipolar depression, a major depressive disorder in DSM 5, by the presence of manic or hypomanic episodes (Miklowitz Gitlin, 2014). Bipolar disorder is generally an episodic, lifelong illness with a variable course (American Psychiatric Association, 2010). There are two classifications of bipolar disorder; bipolar I disorder and bipolar II disorder. If the episodes are primarily manic but there has been at least one depressive episode, the diagnosis is bipolar I disorder (Early, 2009). • 52. Essay about North Korea This article deals with the United States and its attempts to deal with the dangerous matters of North Korea. Some of the problems that were brought up in this article were North Korea s plan to restart a plutonium based nuclear program at Yongbyon, North Korea s plan to build a new highly enriched uranium (HEU) nuclear program, and the tension that emerged between the United States and South Korea. Even though many problems were occurring, there were some positive things that were happening at the time. The United States began negotiating with NorthKorea and South Korea about establishing railroad links, demining portions of the demilitarized zone, allowing athletes to compete in the Asian games, and allowing abductees to visit Japan.... They did not want us to disengage and isolate from them. At the beginning, our response to North Korea s HEU and plutonium programs was very hostile and involved condemning them. Eventually, we took little baby steps to ease the tension. We also agreed to talk to them, but limited the things we could talk about with them. At the very time all of this chaos is happening, our relationship with the South Korea is reaching an all time low. I think there are many things that the United States has to do in order to resolve the problems that are occurring and to prevent more problems from happening in the future. The first thing that I think the United States should do is to treat them as nicely as possible, even if it means going against what we believe and letting them get away with bad behavior. In the long run it might be a bad thing to do because it could influence other nations to think that they can walk over us and take advantage of us. However, I think it would be the correct thing to do right now because the last thing anyone wants is a nation that is angry with you that holds nuclear weapons. If, however, North Korea refuses to accept our proposal for negotiations and does not agree with anything that we have to offer, I think the only other option is to attack them with ...
