Persuasive Essay On Maternity Leave
Only 9% percent of American companies offer paid paternity leave for all their employees (Ramnarace,). Since Family and Medical Leave Act
(FMLA) are underpaid, it is very hard for fathers to be able to take a long absence from work and not be paid for the time off. 86 percent of men
said they would not take a paid leave unless they made at least 70 percent of their current salary (Ramnarace,). There are 79 countries that have
laws that require companies to offer paternity leave for fathers. There are 29 countries in Africa, 7 in Asia, 5 in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, 12
in Lain America, 2 in the Middle East, and 24 in the Developed Economies (Ramnarace,). The United States is still behind by only having 4 states
that have adopted the new laws allowing fathers a leave of absence from work with some sort of pay. While the current family leave law allows for 12
work weeks of unpaid, job–protected leave in a 12–month period, I believe the law should be expanded worldwide to allow paid leave for all fathers
without using their accumulated paid leave credits (Parental).
According to the Michigan Civil Service Commission (MCSC), "parental leave is a FMLA leave of absence for employees who become parents of

Many of them have the mindset that they are supposed to be the provider for the family. By only working part time or taking the unpaid time off
fathers feel they are not doing the right thing by bringing in a steady income for their family. If they were offered a few weeks off that allowed
them to receive 70% of more of their current hourly rate, I feel that more fathers would take advantage of this time to spend with their new child. Not
only will they be able to spend time and bond with their new child but also be bringing in a steady income during their requested time off from

Parental Leave
In an article by Bucklan & Sonenshein (2015), there are about 500 companies here in the US who are making billions every year, but, the sad part,
never paid parental leave. When a study was done by United States department of labor, through the Institute of Women's Policy research, it was
recommended that a more strategy planned should be used to ensure employers that total secrecy to any survey done by the agency in order to fully
understand reasons behind the problem. This means, a lot of companies are refusing to open–up details of their predicaments regarding parental leaves.
Although there is a basis for making parental paid leaves a reality, numerous companies still refuse to provide this kind of privileges due to some
financial reasons.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Not only that, while both are aiming for the ultimate goal of increase in production effort and quality, in one corner, a little baby wrapped on her
pink blanket, will be the one who will most likely get the most out of it all. As a parent, you have the chance to enjoy your baby without thinking
about workloads or keeping up the work because you know at the back of your mind, everything is settled with your company. New mothers have lots
of time breastfeeding their babies which eventually gets all the nutrients needed to let him grow and develop to the fullest. Since you don't have the
work, you can visit your baby's doctor after one week or the first 3–4 months and see how well your baby now. If problems occur, early interventions
can be made because of the generous time given to you by the company.
So, going back to the question on whether or not the United States will ever offer parental leaves for all parents? Based on readings and sources that I
gathered, I think it will take a long time for all companies located in each 50 states of the United States finally agree upon a 100% parental leave with
pay. As of today, US is the only developed country that doesn't offer maternity leave. How can that

Should Father's Receive Paid Paternity Leave
In this day in age we find ourselves wondering if is feasible for men to get paid paternity leave, since women get paid maternity leave after they have
their baby. You have to really think about this though, because not all companies pay women to take maternity leave. So why would we pay our
men to take paternity leave when not all women get paid when they have no choice but to take off after having a baby. So I want you to ask yourself,
"Should father's get paid for paternity leave?" There are some good aspects to having the father take paternity leave. Say, companies did offer ... Show

Having the father home will help with daycare cost when the mother goes back to work. There are some potential downsides to men having paid
paternity leave. Most countries make parental leave open to both men and women; women take the vast majority of leave. When leave is long, this
can have some consequences for women's place in the labor market. For example, in Sweden parents have the right to a parental leave for up to 18
months, but women take nearly 85% of parental leave. The major goal of Swedish policy these days is to encourage men to take more parental
leave; already there are two month "daddy only" leaves, which are lost to the couple if the father doesn't take them. The problem with fathers taking
paternity leave is that the fathers are scared to take leave for the fear that they may lose their jobs. Companies should offer paternity leave for
expectant fathers. By offering paternity leave for fathers–to–be companies allow fathers to be a benefit of paid or unpaid time off work to care for their
child, make arrangements for the child's welfare, and preparation for the adoption of a child. Generally, offering paternity leave for fathers allows
them to benefit the birth of a child. Companies that provide the option of paternity leave grant these fathers the privilege of being present for labor,
delivery, and any other emergency procedures that may be necessary. Paternity leave provides the father with an advantage to be able to care for their

Argument Against A Paid Maternity Leave Essay
All of the above are strong arguments for the pressing necessity of a mandated paid maternity leave. Nevertheless, the many opponents of this initiative
are arguing otherwise.
One argument against a paid maternity leave is based on the assumption that one of the parents should not be working in the first place. In other words,
a full–time stay–at–home parent is beneficial to the development of the child and therefore a paid limited–time maternity leave is redundant and is
simply a waste of resources. Suzanne Venker, a writer, insists that "According to Public Agenda, 70% of parents with children under age five believe
"having a parent at home is best." And 63% disagree that children in daycare receive "just as good" care and attention as with a stay–at–home parent.
These findings are commensurate with 2014 Pew data that shows 60% of Americans say children are "better off when a parent stays home to focus
on the family."" ("Why Paid Maternity Leave Is Not the Answer.") According to these findings, Americans are unlikely to agree to encourage mothers
to put their children in childcare and go back to work, let alone spend money on a paid maternity leave.
Nice try, Ms. Venker, but let 's continue to read the mentioned 2014 Pew data till the end: "Stay
–at–home mothers are younger, poorer and less
educated than their working counterparts. For example, 34% of stay–at–home mothers are poor, compared with 12% of working mothers." ("7 Key
Findings about Stay–at–home Moms.") Let 's

The United States Is The Only Industrialized Country...
Currently, the United States is the only industrialized country without a statute requiring all employers to provide some kind of paid time off for its
employees to care for a newborn or a sick loved one. Data gathered from 38 member countries of the Organization for Economic Co–operation and
Development (OECD) support this claim. Figure 1 shows the member countries and the length of maternity leave provided to all employees. The
graph details only the averages. Maternity leave provisions can include 2 to 30 weeks paid at 100% of the employee's salary and an additional leave
that can be as long as 52 weeks at 90% of the salary, or less in other countries. The OECD calculated the average paid maternity leave in the member
countries to be 17 weeks, with an average payment rate of about 78%. There are 17 countries providing above–average paid maternity leave benefits,
including industrialized economies like the United Kingdom, Denmark, Finland, and Italy. On top of maternity leave, most OECD members also
have an additional paid parental and home care leave available only to mothers. The organization summarizes this benefit in Figure 2 which shows
that its average for the 38 member countries is about 37 weeks, with an average payout of 45% of the employee's original earnings. The United
States, with only FMLA for a legislation, falls way below the average for all categories with 0 weeks of guaranteed paid leave. In addition to the
maternity and other paid leave for mothers,

Parental Leave Benefits
Two of the parental leave policies that I find especially generous are offered by Netflix and Microsoft. I feel that Netflix's offering of paid leave for
new mothers or fathers for an entire year after the baby's birth is especially generous because most companies only offer a few months of maternity
leave and is not necessarily paid, and many companies offer a couple weeks of paternity leave paid if any at all. Microsoft was especially generous
when they nearly doubled their paid leave to twenty weeks for women who had just given birth. I find this generous because on average many women
only get up to 12 weeks unpaid leave.

She mentions that she planned to work throughout the pregnancy and take limited time away like she did with her son. The contradictory statement
happens against Yahoo, who lengthened their parental leave in 2013. This is said to be contradicting because she is a leader within the company who
offers a good amount of parental leave and if she does not take it herself than those coworkers beneath her are more likely not to take it.
I do agree that there is contradictory signaling going on to a certain extent because if workers of Yahoo see their boss not taking the leave the
company offers the other workers do not want to disappoint so they will not use the leave either. On the other hand, everyone lives their own life and
should make decisions that will best benefit them and their family and not base it off someone else.
I do not believe that there is a significant difference in the statements because the first statement is read as take all the time you need, so when that
person is ready to come back they should. With the other statement of "we'll see you in 12 weeks", I read that as in 12 weeks your job will still be
there even if you take the full 12 weeks. I feel as with either statement you could use the full 12 weeks or come back when you are

Parental Leave Policy Analysis
Parental Leave
The need for paid family leave has always been there, but finally is coming to the forefront of the presidential election in 2016. Both democratic front
runners have policies that they have spoken about openly and even a few republicans had some bare bones policies, but those politicians did not make
it this far. The best and most inclusive policy in my opinion is the one of Bernie Sanders. Sanders supports and is cosponsoring the FAMILYAct which
would provide 12 weeks of paid family and medical leave to care for a sick loved one or for the birth of a child. Also, he supports the Healthy Families
act that would guarantee 7 days of paid sick leave to every worker. The last part of his plan is to support the Guaranteed Paid Vacation... Show more

Finally, as millennials start to gain some power and pull in the workforce after graduating from college and starting families of their own it is
starting to get some traction. The generation as a whole is not willing to compromise their work life balance to fit the societal norm (Gilbert, 2011).
The demands of the generation that is larger than baby boomers will not be stifled, especially when the United States has many countries to catch up
to when it comes to workers' rights policies like family leave. It is estimated that millennials will be over 50% of the workforce in the next 4 years
(PWC, 2016). That kind of majority in the workforce and thus voting population forces change and opens windows for policy makers that have been
patiently waiting in the wings for the chance to push their policies through. Sanders policies that he is supporting and co–sponsoring are a perfect
example of this. Sanders has supported family leave since the early 1980s but did not have the policy window to push his policy through. Power
structure within society is something else that is changing with the millennial generation. Millennials are a generation that is very aware of who has
power in society and why they have it. As a whole they are fighting to reverse the inequity and racism that is often found within that power. Many

Paid Parental Leave Case Study
Paid parental leave has been an issue of public and political debate since the early 1970s (Brennan, 2009), stemming from lobbying of the women's
movement and women's liberation groups (Kramarae & Spender, 2000). The first development towards paid parental leave was made in the late 1970s.
At this time the union movement, in particular, the Australian Council of Trade Unions, successfully pushed for a woman's rights to access maternity
leave by applying political pressure on the government of the day (Baird & Murray, 2014). As a result women were able to access 52 weeks of
unpaid maternity leave with jobs protected, access to this leave was granted to adoptive parents and fathers from the mid 1980's (McCarthy, Jenkin &
Stewart, 2011). Throughout ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The release of the 2002 Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission Report amplified the public and political pressure placed on the
government to implement a national scheme (Baird & Murray, 2014). A change in government at the 2001 election brought with it the strong
conservative pragmatist approach of The Coalition government under the leadership of John Howard (Sawer, 1997). Policy changes made under the
government during this time placed emphasis on women's fertility and motherhood rather than their contribution and importance within the labour
market (Baird, 2005). Resulting from political pressure felt from paid leave advocates from both political and public spheres, the conservative
government introduced the Baby bonus in 2002 to appease their constituents while maintaining their opposition to the introduction of a paid parental
leave scheme. This demonstrates the government compromising to maintain a balance between the government's ideology and public and political
support. The baby bonus supplied a small monetary bonus upon the birth of a child and was available, controversially, to both working and
non–working women (Baird, 2005). The government's implementation of various policies during their time in office showed ambivalence or
possibly divides within the government surrounding whether women were to be supported as housewives or as wage earners (Brennan, 2007) with
the baby bonus placing emphasis on a women's role as a carer rather than a contributor to the economy (Hill, 2006). Changes in family policies can be
linked to demographic trends, especially when birth rates and women's workforce participation rose, resulting in increased demand on policy makers
to alter policies to provide support and alleviate pressures felt by families (Gauthier,

The Issue Of Paid Parental Leave
INTRODUCTION
Is America falling behind the rest of the world in terms of the services it provides? As a proud citizen of this great nation I, unfortunately, have to say
"yes." Our once outstanding country has been falling behind in a number of areas including technology, education, economics, and yes, even in family
care! America is now one of only three industrialized countries that hasn't set up a nationwide policy for paid parental leave. With this knowledge I
desired to know more, particularly if we as a nation are not doing much to rectify the situation. Then, to learn if any states were doing something
about this issue which effects so many people in the workforce. I wanted to see exactly how far behind, compared to the rest world, we are in the
issue of paid parental leave. The Pew Research Center conducted a study of government supported leave in 38 OECD countries, and found that the
US had the lowest figures with zero weeks of paid leave. Though we did fare better when it came to the number of weeks provided for protected
leave with 12 weeks. We were still far worse than most other OECD countries (see Figure 1 at right). Knowing that we were rated worse I wanted to
know what people are saying that we can and should be doing to change this situation?

Paternal Leave Model
Paternal Leave
Another portion of the family model that is changing for fathers is the aspect of paternal leave. In Canada, the amount of paternal leave offered for
families is 35 weeks and originally had to be split between the two parents. The Global News reported that the 2018 federal government budget
included a five–week, use–it–or–lose–it incentive for new dads to take parental leave with the statement that this will "help families balance or
reconcile work and family responsibilities" (Blatchford, 2018). Marshall (2008) explored the traditional use of the parental leave; initially revealing it
as primarily allocated to the mothers. Marshall noted that assuming parental leave is primarily a mother's benefit makes it difficult for fathers to take
leave as it fuels conflicts in the workplace culture and societal expectations about the appropriate behaviour for men (Marshall, 2008). However,
evidence from Statistics Canada indicated the proportion of fathers receiving paid parental leave benefits had increased ... Show more content on

According to Bradly and Slade (2011), the birth of a child inevitably results in changes to men's lives and the transition to fatherhood is easier for
some men than others. However, fathers experiencing mental difficulties can impact the development of the child. Unfortunately, Bradly and Slade's
clinical implications were based on 20 year old data and focused primarily on depressive symptoms. More research is needed into other areas of
mental health as it relates to fatherhood. (Bradley and Slade, 2011) A study by Garfield et al (2014) presented results which showed that depressive
symptoms for fathers increased through the child's first 5 years of life. However, the authors noted several studies reported the positive aspects of being
a father, including being less angry, more enthusiastic, happier and increased bonding and attachment to their

Research from Israel shows that when more time is given off to new fathers, the more their brain changes to better suit them to be a parent
(Thompson). Being around the new child and caring for them allows the father to share responsibilities that a baby brings along. Having time to
dedicate solely to the child gives the father the ability to bond with their baby. A study by two Columbia University professors discovered that fathers
who are given time off (two or more weeks) are more involved with their child's lives in nine months, proving that better parental relationships come
from paid paternity leave ("Columbia News"). Paternity leave also creates a foundation of trust between father and child, and relieves the pressure put
on mothers. When fathers are around immediately after the baby is born, mothers are not forced to do all the work around the house while caring for a
newborn. The two–week (or more) time frame when fathers are around would allow for a period where both parents can get settled and adapt to
taking care of the child. In Sweden, to qualify for government benefits, the father is required to take off two months from work before the child
becomes eight years old. More research has proven that for every month that fathers took leave to take care of their child, the income of mothers
increased about 7% (Johansson, Elly–Ann). Thus, paternity leave not only benefits the newborn child, but also mothers. This paid leave can give new
parents the ability to get to know their child and adapt to the new responsibilities. There are a multitude of countries that provide paid paternity leave,
and the United States is one of nine counties who does not have this option. There is no reason that fathers should not have an allotted time to spend at
home with their child and spouse, and so this country should mandate the option of giving paid paternity

Defending Paid Parental Leave
In the spirit of debate I speak to the following representatives/senators of the concept bill C addresses. Should parents be forced to suffer financially
and mentally because they gave birth to a baby? They should not and I am in affirmation of this bill because it protects families from financial stress
and has health benefits to the mothers and their children.
Paid maternity leave protects families from financial stress and bombardment. Per the Washington Post in the article "Defending PaidParental leave" on
September 2, 2009, "One of the side effects of the bad economy is that good ideas that sound expensive begin getting ignored. Take paid parental
leave. Making sure that parents can afford to take time off to have a baby is a good idea on a number of fronts. It protects families from the choice of
financial calamity or time with a newborn." ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Not only does us make us in the minority of something but it is also illogical. Paid maternity leave offers a chance for mothers of newborns to take
care of their children yet still stay financially stable. This is especially important when a husband is not available as financial support. 80.6% of
mothers are currently single. If women are having children and their partner absconds then that leaves many women vulnerable to the ghastly teeth of
the economy. The cost of baby for one year is about $36,750 if the mother must find someone to care for the baby. This is due to her job she must
keep up to provide income. On the other hand, if the mother can stay home with the baby then it only costs about $4,194. This immensely lessens the
amount. Therefore, this could all be avoided if paid maternity leave was provided. Mothers wouldn't have to worry about where the money comes

Benefits And Benefits Of Parental Leave
Our society is changing each and every day, new technology advancements, new medical practices, and new industrial technology advancements, just to
name a few. With this being said, shouldn't the benefits be changing along with this? You have medical leave, maternity leave and in rare occasions,
paternity leave. Why shouldn't parents be able to take off time together to bond with their newborns or new family members in such a case as
adoption? So I took some time to study about parental leave, this is when I came across some very interesting information. When looking at the
statistics, the benefits really out weigh the disadvantages. Parental leave policies with a required minimum of twelve weeks paid leave to use at the
parents will within the first four years of the child 's life should be offered in United States, like in Sweden, because children and parents will both
benefit from this.
A person will have to make observations of the current parental leave policies in the United States and in Sweden. I will discuss the benefits and
costs of having parental leave policies which include: government involvement, effects of the temporary workforce, and the requirements of parental
leave. To do justice for this research I have limited my parental leave to focus on adoptive and biological family members only. I acknowledge other
forms of parental leave, but I will remain focused on adoptive and biological leave. Finally, I will propose possible solutions to parental

Paid maternity leave Tara is an American female who was nine months pregnant. She was working full time at home and care for her one–year–old
toddler. In several days in of end in her pregnant, she was focused not just on her expected date of confinement, but also on another deadline which
she would have to go back at work 20 days after giving birth. Actually Tara's situation is pretty typical in the U.S. America is the only developed

have the right to provide the unpaid break for new moms when they are during the month before and after childbirth. Recently, more and more citizens

Parental Leave:
Paid parental leave should be equal and for both parents once a child is born
Recently women's rights and women's equality in the workplace has come back to the fore as a topic for discussion in government agencies and the
United Nations. Whilst this is a very important topic, when it comes to time off from work when a new child is born, women in the US have some
provision, whereas men have none.
The Family and Medical Aid Act (FLMA), of 1993, provides for 12 weeks of unpaid, job protected leave for certain specified events (8). Whilst one
could refer to this as maternity or paternity leave if taken because of a pregnancy, this would not be strictly true. Where maternity and paternity leave

There is no distinction made for mother or father, as both are deemed as important, therefore they can carve up the 16 months as needed. If the U.S.
was concerned about the cost of paid parental leave, it only has to look to it's neighbors to the north for some ideas. In the state of QuГ©bec in
Canada, the government has a plan called the QPIP, or QuГ©bec Parental Insurance Plan (2). QPIP is specifically designed for the father as the
mother is provided for by other means. It is, as the name states, effectively an insurance plan that gets paid into by the father, if eligible, to help
provide for paid leave at the time of birth. One distinction made clear in this model though, is that the benefits are for the biological father, which
could be different from the male adult who will be bringing up the child.
It has been argued that maternity leave is not only harmful to business but also to women themselves, and that it can be a burden on businesses so
they may think twice about employing women. (7) Where leave is given, whether paid or unpaid, businesses have to fill the position vacated by the
parents and this in itself creates additional work and cost for employers who have to pay for job advertisements, background checks and time for
interviews. They are also faced with the cost of training the temporary

In 2013, 88.2 percent of families with children under 18 had at least one parent in the workforce, which means the employers seeking to recruit and

Parental Leave At The United States Essay
III. Parental Leave in the United States
The lack of a paid parental leave law in the country does not necessarily mean that it is absent in the U.S. labor market. Some generous and more
progressive companies do recognize the importance of the leave to employees and do offer it. According to the Employee Benefits Survey of 2015,
21% of employers nationally offer some paid maternity leave while 17% offer some paid paternity/adoption leave. However, about a fifth don't have
any kind of protected maternity, paternity, or adoptive leave. (Ray, 8; Time, n. pag.)
An article online from Time Inc. Network lists some U.S. companies that do offer paid parental leave. Most of these companies use the leave to attract
talented employees and most are in the information and/or technology industry. The list include:
Adobe– 26 weeks of paid maternity leave and 16 weeks of paid leave for primary caregivers
Amazon– 20 weeks of paid maternity leave, 2 of which can be taken before the birth of the child, and 6 weeks of paid paternal and adoptive parents

Apple– 18 weeks of paid maternity leave, 4 of which can be taken before the birth of the child, and 6 weeks of paid paternal and adoptive parents leave

Happiness In America
Happiness is the only thing in this world that is neither measurable, profitable, nor tradeable. Despite this fact, it is still desperately sought by all.
They want to have happiness, and want to know they have a lot of it. However happiness, like air or water, is a hard thing to grasp in one's hand. It
is intangible and nebulous. So how do people know if they have it? That is for them to decide. Generally, happiness has to do with an emotional and
mental state of welfare that can be characterized through pleasant and positive emotion such as contentment and joy. Like beauty, happiness is
indiscernible. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder similar to how happiness is in the mind of a human. Happiness can only be measured on an

The parenting happiness gap is an idea that parents are not as happy as adults without children. In America, the happiness gap is one of the largest
among first world countries. American parents report being 12% less happier after having kids CITATION. Researchers discovered that the gap could

financial and emotional burden. The average middle–class American family will have spent more than $245,340 on each child by the time they are 18.
The United States provides minimal assistance to parents, including paid parental leave, mandatory paid sick and vacation days, subsidized child care,

How Bonding Helps A Child Physically Secure, Safe, And...
Bonding helps a child feel secure, safe, and helps new parents understand their child's needs and how to respond to them. When parents take the time to
bond with their child, it allows them to build more successful relationships in the future. I strongly believe in this and that's what led me to my topic
which deals with parental leave. Many believe in parental leave because it allots time for bonding. I also believe that another important factor is
feeding. The healthiest way for your child to feed is through breast milk and it is best straight from the source. So, how can your child get the best
nutrition if you can only properly breast feed for a couple of weeks? In the United States, no company is required to give paid maternity or ... Show

Many women that were interviewed that weren't in the military said that they didn't want to enlist because of the limitations on reproduction and
several that quit did so for the same reason. Forty percent of women on active duty have children, about ten percent of women in the military become
pregnant each year, and women in general make up fifteen percent of the military's population (Tyson). Since the numbers have increased drastically
over the past fifty years, the article provides supportive evidence as to why the unaccommodating constraints should change.
This source relates to the side of my topic where I compare the previous rules to the new ones that have evolved. The article was published in 2008,
and the new laws weren't enforced until 2016. One of the issues in the article discusses how women that would be deployed to a war zone when their
child was only four months old felt and how it encouraged post–partum depression because the mother was not ready to be away from the child so
soon. Another issue in the article that relates to the bigger picture of my topic is where it mentions how the constraints stopped women from wanting to

All business (sales, logistics, transportation, investments) that take place between two or more countries or nations is called International Business.
International Business is a practice that not only involves commercial transactions, but also the exchange of economic resources, skills, people, capital,

Many conflicts that arise are based on cross–cultural differences. Cross–cultural differences is a discourse or misunderstanding of one's culture when the
cultures interact. The confusion and offensives can happen as easily as not understanding the holding of a business card or greeting someone in the
wrong way according to their culture. Source: Newdirectconsulting.com
When cultures are not respected or appreciated it will effect negotiations and operations. The mix of the cultures within the departments collaborating
on project teams and managing can take its toll if the organization has not been cross–trained on cultural differences. The cultural differences on
conflict resolution, teamwork, and problem solving can be profound. For example, in the Japanese culture the board room is not used to have
discussions. Instead the boardroom and meetings are meant for progress reports. Unlike the Western culture where we use meetings to have
discussions, debate, and sometimes physically display our views when we disagree with someone. It is examples like these that can take a place in
the business that will set the company back or destroy it before it can even begin. While personality cannot be changed our cultural response can be. It
is a learned set of beliefs, values, assumptions, and can be constantly evolving with the right training. Two models that have been

Benefits Of Implementing The Parental Leave Policy
The United States and the United States Army had made several revisions to the paternity/ maternity leave policies. Even with current changes we are
not where we need to be. The United States Army currently offers 10 days of paternity leave to Soldiers that are marriedВ№ and 12 weeks of
maternity leave for female Soldiers.ВІ The Army should convert these two policies into one policy titled parental leave. Some of the benefits of
implementing the parental leave policy are mother's physical and mental readiness, increased performance, and equality.
Maternity leave is to allow for the women to heal after delivering a baby. Having the father/ spouse home during the first ten days is helpful but not
enough time. The father/ spouse being present can allow for them to take on some of the child rearing activities. These activities can range from
bathing, diapering, feeding and etc. This helping hand will allow for the mother to get more rest aiding in a faster recovery, provide breaks from child
rearing that reduces the likeness of postpartum depression and create more flexibility. Parental leave will provide the ability for the father/ spouse to
support the maternal mother through the duration of her medical recovery, which is an average of six weeks. This can be a stressful time as the female
body regulates its hormones. Another important medical factor is the father/ spouse can help monitor the mother's signs and symptoms and get the help
if necessary. In addition, having both

New Fathers Should Have A Paid Parental Leave Law Essay
New fathers are showing more interest in the day–to–day activities of their children. They are wanting to be more than just breadwinners; they want to
be more attached to their children. As was pointed out earlier, 86 percent of fathers said they would take paternity leave if it paid 70% of their income.
For a lot men in the Citation survey, the expected income reduction did not dissuade them from taking parental leave to be with their newborn and wife.
My own survey showed me that the majority of respondents, and perhaps of the population, is unaware that there is currently no paid parental leave
law in the country. This came as a surprise since only one of them did not have kids. Expectant father Philip Holt said that he was also unaware of
the lack of a paid parental leave law in the country. However, when asked if they think the country should have a paid parental leave law, most replied
"yes" ("Parental Leave Awareness", n. pag.).
Perhaps these survey results also coincide with the assertion by some researchers that nurturing and caretaking is not just an inborn characteristic but
an acquired one. The result of this Citation survey points us to the strong possibility of re–defining gender roles. But gender redefining aside, in order
for a parental leave law to promote the medical, societal, and economic benefits it entails, it needs to be practical for everybody to take.
The results of my own survey further gave merit to my proposal for a paid parental leave law. The

The Importance Of Equal Pay For Equal Work
Despite the numerous benefits society reaps from 'equal pay for equal work', there is still a prevalent gender inequality that persists. Research indicates
that Australia's female senior executives earn drastically less money than their male co–workers across all types of pay, not just performance based
(Hutchinson et al. 2015, p. 785). It was found that executives who were female, represented 8.2 per cent of the study sample, earnt approximately
22.58 per cent less in base salary compared to men during the same sample period (Hutchinson et al. 2015, p. 787). Furthermore, if executives were
granted performance–based pay, "women were awarded roughly 16.26 per cent less in cash bonus and 18.21 per cent less in long–term incentive pay"
(Hutchinson et al. 2015, p. 783). Provided women are awarded less money in all forms of compensation, the idea of women breaking the 'class ceiling'
is a difficult task that seems unobtainable to most. In such circumstances despite entering the workforce, women may experience reduced motivation to
seek management or board positions due to the extended effort they have to provide over men.
Important gender differences still influence numerous labour market outcomes and possibilities (Farre, 2016). Women's discontinuous labour market
participation is a major contributor to gender inequality within the labour force (Arnarson & Aparna, 2010). Women are often forced to exit the labour
market for an extended duration of time due to many reasons such

Paid Paternity Leave
Apart from maternity leave, there is inclusive paid parental leave or paid paternity leave which permits dads to take time off to take care and bond
with their child. Research shows that conservative attitudes toward parental leaves are changing to a more inclusive approach where men want to be
more involved and have as much time as the mother with their kid (Harrington 2013). HR policies that offer gender–inclusive leave provide significant
benefits to everyone in the family. Child rearing, particularly at the beginning of the baby's life, is important because during this bonding time families
create emotional benefits that establish the building blocks for more involved parenting in the future (Allen and Daly 2007). Additionally, men taking
more responsibility for child nurturing benefits women since it improves ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even if there is a policy in place, men, for the most part, are not willing to take the leave if it means they will jeopardize their career growth or
development. Research shows that men who do take advantage of friendly–family policies are not taken as serious about their jobs which can later
affect their chances of getting recommendations for pay increases and other work rewards (Allen 1991; Scheneer and Reitman 1990). Moreover, men
are giving short–term burden and are perceived as less committed for taking parental leave in comparison to women since child rearing is not
considered to be necessary under their arena (Allen 1991; Allen and Russell 1999). Organizations not only need to offer paternity leave, but they need
to encourage employees to take it by helping eliminate the stigma and rewarding positive behavior. One of the options could be to encourage and

Discrimination, Policies, And The Gender Wage Gap
Discrimination, Policies, and The Gender Wage–Gap For decades, the gender wage–gap has been an ongoing issue in Canada. Since then, women's
rights have changed and allowed them to obtain career positions much like men. Although women have successfully fought for their rights, the issues
of the gender wage gap, and sexist stereotypes continue in Canada. The Canadian Government needs to strengthen its discrimination policies so it can
rectify and allow for equal opportunity, support parental leave, and narrow the gender wage–gap. Gender–based stereotyping in the workforce informs
societal perceptions and assumptions of what is accepted as a typical 'male' or 'female' roles within the workplace. Experts still disagree as to which
variables inform each stereotype. One expert, Morley Gunderson suggests that the difference in preference towards the chosen occupation is the key
indicator, not gender profiling (M. Baker, M. Drolet 2010). Another opinion is that women are more likely to pursue careers within health and
education sectors, whereas men are more inclined to pursue engineering and other related technological fields (J. Cool, 2010). This shows a strong
sense of gender bias, and harsh stereotyping of the gender roles in society. Both men and women have a place within technological, and educational
fields of work. Gender–based stereotyping is also present in the expectations of women outside of the workforce. Employers and executives may

In the US, paid parental leave is considered to be a benefit provided by employers, but not required. Yet, only 12% of workers reported having such

Department of Labor, paid maternity leave can increase female labor force participation by making it easier for women to stay in the workforce after
giving birth, which contributes to economic growth. Furthermore, when parents are better supported at work through paid family and medical leave,
they are also less likely to rely on public assistance benefits. Paid leave leads to better outcomes for parents and ... Show more content on

Pay Parental Leave : Is It A Necessity?

Paid Parental Leave: Is it a necessity? Are the 6–12 weeks of paid parental leave for both mothers and fathers as well as adoptive parents more
beneficial or harmful? Most parents believe that paid parental leave for both the birth or adoption of a baby should be considered a right. However,
many also argue that this paid time off should be seen as a privilege, and an unnecessary privilege at that. How crucial are those first 6–12 weeks for
both new parents as well as the baby? There are arguments that if you cannot avoid to take the time off, you cannot afford the care behind raising a
child. Although there may not be a black and white, yes or no answer, because everyone has their own opinions, there is a line we can get at least get
close to as to whether or not this is really a necessity or if it is not necessary for these new parents and children. There is more evidence that paid
parental leave would be beneficial to both mother and child than there is evidence that it would be harmful to our economy, however there are
proposed downsides in making paid parental leave a requirement in the U.S. Cambridge Dictionary's definition of parental leave is "time that a
parent is allowed to spend away from work to take care of his or her baby" (Cambridge Dictionary). In an article on the Huffington Post written by

come with raising a child of their own. The people also say parental leave "goes beyond the scope of the government."

As one can see, the topic of parental leave has many factors that play major roles in what and how and how much should be done with parental leave.
Now that you've heard all the facts, how could the United States achieve a parental leave program for new families? Here are a few things to
consider, FMLA, cost, job employment, and benefits to offer. I'm proposing a plan to help new families and even other families that are in need of
some work. I think that with the statistics being stated above, the United States needs to have a paid parental leave benefit system offered in their
contracts. I believe this will help many people and families in the bonding process. We would go about this in first setting aside some money and
getting the government to approve this policy. Then, FMLA would also be the ones helping out with parental leave. New parents would be able to
leave their job knowing they could still come back after their leave was up. While the newly parents were gone, the employer could offer a temporary
job to someone seeking a job. They wouldn't have to give them the full benefit system they offer because the job seeker wouldn't be with them forever.
As part of the solution, if a person knew they wanted to start a family by having or adopting a child, they could start a process of the company taking

Companies Should Receive Parental Leave
Some companies are approving parental leave, even for dads. Besides the mother, the father needs to take time off and take care of his wife and
newborn. The father should not be required to go to work if he has to stay up all night with his child. Moreover, he should be eligible to receive parental
leave benefits.
Currently, there are some companies that have started giving parental leave for dads. Before this practice, the parent who commonly received paid leave
was the pregnant mother and she had to work 40 hours a week for more than a year. It is important for everyone to get assistance when they need it,
especially a mother who has given birth. Sometimes a father will be fired from his job because his company does not offer any parental leave. A
mother who is working less than 30 hours is now able to get parental leave with full benefits. In addition to mothers and fathers, foster parents and
parents who adopt are also receiving the benefits of parental leave. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To be eligible for these benefits, the mothers must have worked at least 20 hours a week for more than two years at the company. The mothers can
get six weeks of paid leave and 12 weeks of unpaid leave, which is a federal regulation. However, other parents can only receive up to twelve weeks
of unpaid leave. Parents other than the birth mother, such as the father, still cannot receive full benefits. The only benefit the father can receive is
that he can leave his job to take care of his new baby without the risk of being fired. However, fathers' job titles are not always secure. For that reason,
some men are not willing to risk their job position, and thus they do not like to take parental

In recent years, fathers have taken on increased roles in child rearing. It is now a common place for a father to be a full–time, stay–at–home parent, or

NBC News reported that 14 percent of U.S. employers offer paid leave for new dads , which has made the country into the only developed nation that
does not guarantee the paid time off. Most employers do not support the idea of men and women together getting maternity leave and that the mother
should be the only one to get paid time off. Apparently men do not deserve paternity leave, because if companies were forced to give paternity leave
to men and women, for months at a time, it would seriously injure the economy and all the businesses. This opportunity cost is much greater then the
necessity for men to be at home with the mother taking care of the baby. On the other hand if dads stay home take and take care of the newborn they
will be more directly involved in childcare. The Organizations for Economic Co–Operation and Development released a study in January 2013 and
found out that dads who spent more time with their kids, at least two weeks after birth are more likely to be involved in their care in the years to
follow. Despite how much it would injure the company's business, the opportunity cost would be worth it if studies have shown that father would play
more of an active role in the child's life.

Netflix's Case : Netflix : Parental Leave For Family Leave
Recently, Netflix restructured their parental leave policies for both new mothers and fathers to receive an unlimited paid leave for up to a year. The
company then permits the workers to return part–time or full–time as needed for a better transition into the balance between a career and a new child
(Spar 98). At first, this generous plan singularly applied to salaried workers in the streaming division; however, after a few months of persuasive input
from employees and customers, Netflix decided to offer restricted benefits to hourly workers, with up to sixteen weeks of full pay ("ValueWalk").
Although uncommon to companies in the United States, a plan of this nature will amplify economic prospects by enhancing recruiting ability and
promoting the health of workers. Thus, business should have policies that mirror this support and flexibility of providing paid parental leave benefits.
Despite the advantages of paid parental leave, the United States trails behind other developed countries in guaranteeing these options. In fact, America
is currently "one of the only two nations (the other being Papua New Guinea) that do not guarantee paid maternity leave to new mothers" (Baum II and

Should Parents Leave For Unpaid Leave? Essay
First, it is important to emphasize why parental leave needs not only be available but why it also needs to be paid. An unpaid leave can be very
expensive for most people. Providing only unpaid leave would defeat the purpose of having it in the first place because most would not even use
it. In a survey by the Boston College Centre for Work and Family, they found that 86% of men would take paternity leave if it paid at least 70% of
their wages. (Citation, n. pag.) On the other hand, women without access to paid maternity leave are forced to into a loss of income or loss of job
altogether. This comes at a time when more expenses are sure to arise and more income is sure to be needed.
In the data gathered by OECD, in most nations the government pays part of the cost of providing parental leave benefits through payroll taxes. In these
nations, the employee contributes, the employer contributes, and the government contributes to make sure that benefits are universal. They have
regulators, like Social Security, that takes in the contributions and distributes it to qualified citizens. Everybody contributes to minimize the burden on
just one organization and to discourage discrimination against potential leave–takers. (Ray, 17) This information is in congruence with the data
gathered by the International Labour Organization which is represented in Figure 4. (30)
As we can see from the map, in some nations the employer shoulders the expense of payments for parental leave.

life situations such as the return to work following parental leave. According to Valerie Yow, "the recorded in

questions that no other methodology can provide" (Yow 2005, 9). In her introductory chapter on in–depth interviewing, Yow specifically mentions
complex decisions as a case where in–depth interviews allow us to pose questions that remain invisible in statistics and official records. Thus, while the

Nor, the policy gives exclusive importance to employees own health. At the early developing stages of the program, there was hesitation around the

This is an excellent option as it would allow parents to take paid leave but there are also many disadvantages to this approach. First, some
employees, especially if they are new, often accumulate very little sick or vacation time. If someone is earning four hours a pay period and there
are 26 pay periods in a year, they would only accumulate approximately 13 days of leave. If they accrue sick leave at the same rate, that would give the
employee a total of 26 days of paid leave, not even a month. Adding in a typical 10 federal holidays, an employee would have approximately 36

weeks of leave offered by FMLA. Using up all of one's leave can also create issues. If the employee catches the flu but has used up all of their
leave, they will have to take leave without pay. If the employee has more than one child and that child becomes ill, they will not have to take leave
without pay in order to stay home and nurse the child. This leave without pay could be covered under FMLA but if all of the benefits were used up
during paternity leave, their position could be in jeopardy if they needed to take leave without pay for unforeseen reasons. Using holiday pay could
prove to be difficult because employees may not always get

Persuasive Essay On Maternity Leave

  • 1. Persuasive Essay On Maternity Leave Only 9% percent of American companies offer paid paternity leave for all their employees (Ramnarace,). Since Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) are underpaid, it is very hard for fathers to be able to take a long absence from work and not be paid for the time off. 86 percent of men said they would not take a paid leave unless they made at least 70 percent of their current salary (Ramnarace,). There are 79 countries that have laws that require companies to offer paternity leave for fathers. There are 29 countries in Africa, 7 in Asia, 5 in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, 12 in Lain America, 2 in the Middle East, and 24 in the Developed Economies (Ramnarace,). The United States is still behind by only having 4 states that have adopted the new laws allowing fathers a leave of absence from work with some sort of pay. While the current family leave law allows for 12 work weeks of unpaid, job–protected leave in a 12–month period, I believe the law should be expanded worldwide to allow paid leave for all fathers without using their accumulated paid leave credits (Parental). According to the Michigan Civil Service Commission (MCSC), "parental leave is a FMLA leave of absence for employees who become parents of newly born, adopted or fostered ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many of them have the mindset that they are supposed to be the provider for the family. By only working part time or taking the unpaid time off fathers feel they are not doing the right thing by bringing in a steady income for their family. If they were offered a few weeks off that allowed them to receive 70% of more of their current hourly rate, I feel that more fathers would take advantage of this time to spend with their new child. Not only will they be able to spend time and bond with their new child but also be bringing in a steady income during their requested time off from ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Parental Leave In an article by Bucklan & Sonenshein (2015), there are about 500 companies here in the US who are making billions every year, but, the sad part, never paid parental leave. When a study was done by United States department of labor, through the Institute of Women's Policy research, it was recommended that a more strategy planned should be used to ensure employers that total secrecy to any survey done by the agency in order to fully understand reasons behind the problem. This means, a lot of companies are refusing to open–up details of their predicaments regarding parental leaves. Although there is a basis for making parental paid leaves a reality, numerous companies still refuse to provide this kind of privileges due to some financial reasons.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Not only that, while both are aiming for the ultimate goal of increase in production effort and quality, in one corner, a little baby wrapped on her pink blanket, will be the one who will most likely get the most out of it all. As a parent, you have the chance to enjoy your baby without thinking about workloads or keeping up the work because you know at the back of your mind, everything is settled with your company. New mothers have lots of time breastfeeding their babies which eventually gets all the nutrients needed to let him grow and develop to the fullest. Since you don't have the work, you can visit your baby's doctor after one week or the first 3–4 months and see how well your baby now. If problems occur, early interventions can be made because of the generous time given to you by the company. So, going back to the question on whether or not the United States will ever offer parental leaves for all parents? Based on readings and sources that I gathered, I think it will take a long time for all companies located in each 50 states of the United States finally agree upon a 100% parental leave with pay. As of today, US is the only developed country that doesn't offer maternity leave. How can that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Should Father's Receive Paternity Leave Essay EN3100: Week 3 – Assignment: Argumentative Essay 06/24/2012 Ciera Clark National American University Should Father's Receive Paid Paternity Leave In this day in age we find ourselves wondering if is feasible for men to get paid paternity leave, since women get paid maternity leave after they have their baby. You have to really think about this though, because not all companies pay women to take maternity leave. So why would we pay our men to take paternity leave when not all women get paid when they have no choice but to take off after having a baby. So I want you to ask yourself, "Should father's get paid for paternity leave?" There are some good aspects to having the father take paternity leave. Say, companies did offer ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Having the father home will help with daycare cost when the mother goes back to work. There are some potential downsides to men having paid paternity leave. Most countries make parental leave open to both men and women; women take the vast majority of leave. When leave is long, this can have some consequences for women's place in the labor market. For example, in Sweden parents have the right to a parental leave for up to 18 months, but women take nearly 85% of parental leave. The major goal of Swedish policy these days is to encourage men to take more parental leave; already there are two month "daddy only" leaves, which are lost to the couple if the father doesn't take them. The problem with fathers taking paternity leave is that the fathers are scared to take leave for the fear that they may lose their jobs. Companies should offer paternity leave for expectant fathers. By offering paternity leave for fathers–to–be companies allow fathers to be a benefit of paid or unpaid time off work to care for their child, make arrangements for the child's welfare, and preparation for the adoption of a child. Generally, offering paternity leave for fathers allows them to benefit the birth of a child. Companies that provide the option of paternity leave grant these fathers the privilege of being present for labor, delivery, and any other emergency procedures that may be necessary. Paternity leave provides the father with an advantage to be able to care for their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Argument Against A Paid Maternity Leave Essay All of the above are strong arguments for the pressing necessity of a mandated paid maternity leave. Nevertheless, the many opponents of this initiative are arguing otherwise. One argument against a paid maternity leave is based on the assumption that one of the parents should not be working in the first place. In other words, a full–time stay–at–home parent is beneficial to the development of the child and therefore a paid limited–time maternity leave is redundant and is simply a waste of resources. Suzanne Venker, a writer, insists that "According to Public Agenda, 70% of parents with children under age five believe "having a parent at home is best." And 63% disagree that children in daycare receive "just as good" care and attention as with a stay–at–home parent. These findings are commensurate with 2014 Pew data that shows 60% of Americans say children are "better off when a parent stays home to focus on the family."" ("Why Paid Maternity Leave Is Not the Answer.") According to these findings, Americans are unlikely to agree to encourage mothers to put their children in childcare and go back to work, let alone spend money on a paid maternity leave. Nice try, Ms. Venker, but let 's continue to read the mentioned 2014 Pew data till the end: "Stay –at–home mothers are younger, poorer and less educated than their working counterparts. For example, 34% of stay–at–home mothers are poor, compared with 12% of working mothers." ("7 Key Findings about Stay–at–home Moms.") Let 's ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The United States Is The Only Industrialized Country... Currently, the United States is the only industrialized country without a statute requiring all employers to provide some kind of paid time off for its employees to care for a newborn or a sick loved one. Data gathered from 38 member countries of the Organization for Economic Co–operation and Development (OECD) support this claim. Figure 1 shows the member countries and the length of maternity leave provided to all employees. The graph details only the averages. Maternity leave provisions can include 2 to 30 weeks paid at 100% of the employee's salary and an additional leave that can be as long as 52 weeks at 90% of the salary, or less in other countries. The OECD calculated the average paid maternity leave in the member countries to be 17 weeks, with an average payment rate of about 78%. There are 17 countries providing above–average paid maternity leave benefits, including industrialized economies like the United Kingdom, Denmark, Finland, and Italy. On top of maternity leave, most OECD members also have an additional paid parental and home care leave available only to mothers. The organization summarizes this benefit in Figure 2 which shows that its average for the 38 member countries is about 37 weeks, with an average payout of 45% of the employee's original earnings. The United States, with only FMLA for a legislation, falls way below the average for all categories with 0 weeks of guaranteed paid leave. • 6. Parental Leave Benefits Two of the parental leave policies that I find especially generous are offered by Netflix and Microsoft. I feel that Netflix's offering of paid leave for new mothers or fathers for an entire year after the baby's birth is especially generous because most companies only offer a few months of maternity leave and is not necessarily paid, and many companies offer a couple weeks of paternity leave paid if any at all. Microsoft was especially generous when they nearly doubled their paid leave to twenty weeks for women who had just given birth. I find this generous because on average many women only get up to 12 weeks unpaid leave. There is a question that workers will take parental leave benefits because workers may think that taking the leave ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She mentions that she planned to work throughout the pregnancy and take limited time away like she did with her son. The contradictory statement happens against Yahoo, who lengthened their parental leave in 2013. This is said to be contradicting because she is a leader within the company who offers a good amount of parental leave and if she does not take it herself than those coworkers beneath her are more likely not to take it. I do agree that there is contradictory signaling going on to a certain extent because if workers of Yahoo see their boss not taking the leave the company offers the other workers do not want to disappoint so they will not use the leave either. On the other hand, everyone lives their own life and should make decisions that will best benefit them and their family and not base it off someone else. I do not believe that there is a significant difference in the statements because the first statement is read as take all the time you need, so when that person is ready to come back they should. With the other statement of "we'll see you in 12 weeks", I read that as in 12 weeks your job will still be there even if you take the full 12 weeks. I feel as with either statement you could use the full 12 weeks or come back when you are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Parental Leave Policy Analysis Parental Leave The need for paid family leave has always been there, but finally is coming to the forefront of the presidential election in 2016. Both democratic front runners have policies that they have spoken about openly and even a few republicans had some bare bones policies, but those politicians did not make it this far. The best and most inclusive policy in my opinion is the one of Bernie Sanders. Sanders supports and is cosponsoring the FAMILYAct which would provide 12 weeks of paid family and medical leave to care for a sick loved one or for the birth of a child. Also, he supports the Healthy Families act that would guarantee 7 days of paid sick leave to every worker. The last part of his plan is to support the Guaranteed Paid Vacation... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Finally, as millennials start to gain some power and pull in the workforce after graduating from college and starting families of their own it is starting to get some traction. The generation as a whole is not willing to compromise their work life balance to fit the societal norm (Gilbert, 2011). The demands of the generation that is larger than baby boomers will not be stifled, especially when the United States has many countries to catch up to when it comes to workers' rights policies like family leave. It is estimated that millennials will be over 50% of the workforce in the next 4 years (PWC, 2016). That kind of majority in the workforce and thus voting population forces change and opens windows for policy makers that have been patiently waiting in the wings for the chance to push their policies through. Sanders policies that he is supporting and co–sponsoring are a perfect example of this. Sanders has supported family leave since the early 1980s but did not have the policy window to push his policy through. Power structure within society is something else that is changing with the millennial generation. Millennials are a generation that is very aware of who has power in society and why they have it. As a whole they are fighting to reverse the inequity and racism that is often found within that power. Many studies such as Social Change Impact Report, 2014 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Paid Parental Leave Case Study Paid parental leave has been an issue of public and political debate since the early 1970s (Brennan, 2009), stemming from lobbying of the women's movement and women's liberation groups (Kramarae & Spender, 2000). The first development towards paid parental leave was made in the late 1970s. At this time the union movement, in particular, the Australian Council of Trade Unions, successfully pushed for a woman's rights to access maternity leave by applying political pressure on the government of the day (Baird & Murray, 2014). As a result women were able to access 52 weeks of unpaid maternity leave with jobs protected, access to this leave was granted to adoptive parents and fathers from the mid 1980's (McCarthy, Jenkin & Stewart, 2011). Throughout ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The release of the 2002 Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission Report amplified the public and political pressure placed on the government to implement a national scheme (Baird & Murray, 2014). A change in government at the 2001 election brought with it the strong conservative pragmatist approach of The Coalition government under the leadership of John Howard (Sawer, 1997). Policy changes made under the government during this time placed emphasis on women's fertility and motherhood rather than their contribution and importance within the labour market (Baird, 2005). Resulting from political pressure felt from paid leave advocates from both political and public spheres, the conservative government introduced the Baby bonus in 2002 to appease their constituents while maintaining their opposition to the introduction of a paid parental leave scheme. This demonstrates the government compromising to maintain a balance between the government's ideology and public and political support. The baby bonus supplied a small monetary bonus upon the birth of a child and was available, controversially, to both working and non–working women (Baird, 2005). The government's implementation of various policies during their time in office showed ambivalence or possibly divides within the government surrounding whether women were to be supported as housewives or as wage earners (Brennan, 2007) with the baby bonus placing emphasis on a women's role as a carer rather than a contributor to the economy (Hill, 2006). Changes in family policies can be linked to demographic trends, especially when birth rates and women's workforce participation rose, resulting in increased demand on policy makers to alter policies to provide support and alleviate pressures felt by families (Gauthier, ... • 9. The Issue Of Paid Parental Leave INTRODUCTION Is America falling behind the rest of the world in terms of the services it provides? As a proud citizen of this great nation I, unfortunately, have to say "yes." Our once outstanding country has been falling behind in a number of areas including technology, education, economics, and yes, even in family care! America is now one of only three industrialized countries that hasn't set up a nationwide policy for paid parental leave. With this knowledge I desired to know more, particularly if we as a nation are not doing much to rectify the situation. Then, to learn if any states were doing something about this issue which effects so many people in the workforce. I wanted to see exactly how far behind, compared to the rest world, we are in the issue of paid parental leave. The Pew Research Center conducted a study of government supported leave in 38 OECD countries, and found that the US had the lowest figures with zero weeks of paid leave. Though we did fare better when it came to the number of weeks provided for protected leave with 12 weeks. We were still far worse than most other OECD countries (see Figure 1 at right). Knowing that we were rated worse I wanted to know what people are saying that we can and should be doing to change this situation? BACKGROUND The first recorded policy involving working pregnant women was in 1877 in Switzerland. It stated that a women could not work for at least six weeks after giving birth. Then in 1878 Germany issued a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Paternal Leave Model Paternal Leave Another portion of the family model that is changing for fathers is the aspect of paternal leave. In Canada, the amount of paternal leave offered for families is 35 weeks and originally had to be split between the two parents. The Global News reported that the 2018 federal government budget included a five–week, use–it–or–lose–it incentive for new dads to take parental leave with the statement that this will "help families balance or reconcile work and family responsibilities" (Blatchford, 2018). Marshall (2008) explored the traditional use of the parental leave; initially revealing it as primarily allocated to the mothers. Marshall noted that assuming parental leave is primarily a mother's benefit makes it difficult for fathers to take leave as it fuels conflicts in the workplace culture and societal expectations about the appropriate behaviour for men (Marshall, 2008). However, evidence from Statistics Canada indicated the proportion of fathers receiving paid parental leave benefits had increased ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Unfortunately, Bradly and Slade's clinical implications were based on 20 year old data and focused primarily on depressive symptoms. More research is needed into other areas of mental health as it relates to fatherhood. (Bradley and Slade, 2011) A study by Garfield et al (2014) presented results which showed that depressive symptoms for fathers increased through the child's first 5 years of life. • 11. Essay On Paid Parental Leave Take a moment to think about this: you and your significant other just took the step to become parents. Though you are young, you both believed it was time and went ahead and brought a baby into your lives. Staring at your baby and your spouse with loving eyes, you do not think life can get any better. However blissful life may seem, things soon come crashing down. You and your significant other work average wage jobs and are having a hard–enough time supporting each other, and now the cost of diapers, clothes, furniture, formula and baby food are creeping in on you and sucking the life out of your bank account. You want to spend time with your new bundle of joy, but suddenly, your baby is being ripped out of your hands and being sent to an... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Research from Israel shows that when more time is given off to new fathers, the more their brain changes to better suit them to be a parent (Thompson). Being around the new child and caring for them allows the father to share responsibilities that a baby brings along. Having time to dedicate solely to the child gives the father the ability to bond with their baby. A study by two Columbia University professors discovered that fathers who are given time off (two or more weeks) are more involved with their child's lives in nine months, proving that better parental relationships come from paid paternity leave ("Columbia News"). Paternity leave also creates a foundation of trust between father and child, and relieves the pressure put on mothers. When fathers are around immediately after the baby is born, mothers are not forced to do all the work around the house while caring for a newborn. The two–week (or more) time frame when fathers are around would allow for a period where both parents can get settled and adapt to taking care of the child. In Sweden, to qualify for government benefits, the father is required to take off two months from work before the child becomes eight years old. More research has proven that for every month that fathers took leave to take care of their child, the income of mothers increased about 7% (Johansson, Elly–Ann). Thus, paternity leave not only benefits the newborn child, but also mothers. This paid leave can give new parents the ability to get to know their child and adapt to the new responsibilities. There are a multitude of countries that provide paid paternity leave, and the United States is one of nine counties who does not have this option. There is no reason that fathers should not have an allotted time to spend at home with their child and spouse, and so this country should mandate the option of giving paid paternity ... • 12. Defending Paid Parental Leave In the spirit of debate I speak to the following representatives/senators of the concept bill C addresses. Should parents be forced to suffer financially and mentally because they gave birth to a baby? They should not and I am in affirmation of this bill because it protects families from financial stress and has health benefits to the mothers and their children. Paid maternity leave protects families from financial stress and bombardment. Per the Washington Post in the article "Defending PaidParental leave" on September 2, 2009, "One of the side effects of the bad economy is that good ideas that sound expensive begin getting ignored. Take paid parental leave. Making sure that parents can afford to take time off to have a baby is a good idea on a number of fronts. It protects families from the choice of financial calamity or time with a newborn." ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Not only does us make us in the minority of something but it is also illogical. Paid maternity leave offers a chance for mothers of newborns to take care of their children yet still stay financially stable. This is especially important when a husband is not available as financial support. 80.6% of mothers are currently single. If women are having children and their partner absconds then that leaves many women vulnerable to the ghastly teeth of the economy. The cost of baby for one year is about $36,750 if the mother must find someone to care for the baby. This is due to her job she must keep up to provide income. On the other hand, if the mother can stay home with the baby then it only costs about $4,194. This immensely lessens the amount. Therefore, this could all be avoided if paid maternity leave was provided. Mothers wouldn't have to worry about where the money comes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Why shouldn't parents be able to take off time together to bond with their newborns or new family members in such a case as adoption? The Family and Medical Aid Act (FLMA), of 1993, provides for 12 weeks of unpaid, job protected leave for certain specified events (8). In the state of QuГ©bec in Canada, the government has a plan called the QPIP, or QuГ©bec Parental Insurance Plan (2). QPIP is specifically designed for the father as the mother is provided for by other means. It is, as the name states, effectively an insurance plan that gets paid into by the father, if eligible, to help provide for paid leave at the time of birth. One distinction made clear in this model though, is that the benefits are for the biological father, which could be different from the male adult who will be bringing up the child. It has been argued that maternity leave is not only harmful to business but also to women themselves, and that it can be a burden on businesses so they may think twice about employing women. (7) Where leave is given, whether paid or unpaid, businesses have to fill the position vacated by the parents and this in itself creates additional work and cost for employers who have to pay for job advertisements, background checks and time for interviews. It was found that executives who were female, represented 8.2 per cent of the study sample, earnt approximately 22.58 per cent less in base salary compared to men during the same sample period (Hutchinson et al. 2015, p. 787). This time provides long–term benefits that improve a child's brain development, social development and overall well–being. • 30. Pay Parental Leave : Is It A Necessity? Devoree Peace Amanda Morris ENG 101 10/17/16 Paid Parental Leave: Is it a necessity? Are the 6–12 weeks of paid parental leave for both mothers and fathers as well as adoptive parents more beneficial or harmful? Most parents believe that paid parental leave for both the birth or adoption of a baby should be considered a right. However, many also argue that this paid time off should be seen as a privilege, and an unnecessary privilege at that. How crucial are those first 6–12 weeks for both new parents as well as the baby? There are arguments that if you cannot avoid to take the time off, you cannot afford the care behind raising a child. Although there may not be a black and white, yes or no answer, because everyone has their own opinions, there is a line we can get at least get close to as to whether or not this is really a necessity or if it is not necessary for these new parents and children. There is more evidence that paid parental leave would be beneficial to both mother and child than there is evidence that it would be harmful to our economy, however there are proposed downsides in making paid parental leave a requirement in the U.S. Cambridge Dictionary's definition of parental leave is "time that a parent is allowed to spend away from work to take care of his or her baby" (Cambridge Dictionary). Other challenges that parental leave and "birth and adoption unemployment compensation (BAA–UC), face are their opponents who think the government would be overstepping their boundaries if the government stepped in and changed parental leave. These opponents say that it would cost too much money to enforce. Others who are against BAA–UC believe that it is the parents' concerns to provide for the daycare and the duties that come with raising a child of their own. The people also say parental leave "goes beyond the scope of the government." While still others say they, "do not object to the concept of paid leave for the new parents, but believe the employment compensation program is the wrong vehicle for providing such benefits." Randy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As one can see, the topic of parental leave has many factors that play major roles in what and how and how much should be done with parental leave. Now that you've heard all the facts, how could the United States achieve a parental leave program for new families? Here are a few things to consider, FMLA, cost, job employment, and benefits to offer. I'm proposing a plan to help new families and even other families that are in need of some work. I think that with the statistics being stated above, the United States needs to have a paid parental leave benefit system offered in their contracts. I believe this will help many people and families in the bonding process. We would go about this in first setting aside some money and getting the government to approve this policy. Then, FMLA would also be the ones helping out with parental leave. New parents would be able to leave their job knowing they could still come back after their leave was up. While the newly parents were gone, the employer could offer a temporary job to someone seeking a job. They wouldn't have to give them the full benefit system they offer because the job seeker wouldn't be with them forever. As part of the solution, if a person knew they wanted to start a family by having or adopting a child, they could start a process of the company taking out a certain ... • 32. Companies Should Receive Parental Leave Some companies are approving parental leave, even for dads. Besides the mother, the father needs to take time off and take care of his wife and newborn. The father should not be required to go to work if he has to stay up all night with his child. Moreover, he should be eligible to receive parental leave benefits. Currently, there are some companies that have started giving parental leave for dads. Before this practice, the parent who commonly received paid leave was the pregnant mother and she had to work 40 hours a week for more than a year. It is important for everyone to get assistance when they need it, especially a mother who has given birth. Sometimes a father will be fired from his job because his company does not offer any parental leave. A mother who is working less than 30 hours is now able to get parental leave with full benefits. In addition to mothers and fathers, foster parents and parents who adopt are also receiving the benefits of parental leave. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To be eligible for these benefits, the mothers must have worked at least 20 hours a week for more than two years at the company. The mothers can get six weeks of paid leave and 12 weeks of unpaid leave, which is a federal regulation. However, other parents can only receive up to twelve weeks of unpaid leave. Parents other than the birth mother, such as the father, still cannot receive full benefits. The only benefit the father can receive is that he can leave his job to take care of his new baby without the risk of being fired. However, fathers' job titles are not always secure. For that reason, some men are not willing to risk their job position, and thus they do not like to take parental ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. Paternity Leave : The Time A Father Takes Off Work At The... Paternity leave is the time a father takes off work at the birth or adoption his child. Paternity leave is should not just be for mothers, fathers, too, should be able to take days or weeks off after having a new baby. One of the greatest challenges facing American workers is balancing work and family. In recent years, fathers have taken on increased roles in child rearing. It is now a common place for a father to be a full–time, stay–at–home parent, or for a father to share equally in the household and child rearing tasks. There are several general legal requirements for employers offering parental leave to both male and female employees. NBC News reported that 14 percent of U.S. employers offer paid leave for new dads , which has made the country into the only developed nation that does not guarantee the paid time off. Most employers do not support the idea of men and women together getting maternity leave and that the mother should be the only one to get paid time off. Apparently men do not deserve paternity leave, because if companies were forced to give paternity leave to men and women, for months at a time, it would seriously injure the economy and all the businesses. This opportunity cost is much greater then the necessity for men to be at home with the mother taking care of the baby. On the other hand if dads stay home take and take care of the newborn they will be more directly involved in childcare. The Organizations for Economic Co–Operation and Development released a study in January 2013 and found out that dads who spent more time with their kids, at least two weeks after birth are more likely to be involved in their care in the years to follow. Despite how much it would injure the company's business, the opportunity cost would be worth it if studies have shown that father would play more of an active role in the child's life. On an equal standpoint women are able to take care of the baby and themselves. Men can always see and interact wither their children after work and on the weekends, there is simply no need to pay two people for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Netflix's Case : Netflix : Parental Leave For Family Leave Recently, Netflix restructured their parental leave policies for both new mothers and fathers to receive an unlimited paid leave for up to a year. The company then permits the workers to return part–time or full–time as needed for a better transition into the balance between a career and a new child (Spar 98). At first, this generous plan singularly applied to salaried workers in the streaming division; however, after a few months of persuasive input from employees and customers, Netflix decided to offer restricted benefits to hourly workers, with up to sixteen weeks of full pay ("ValueWalk"). Although uncommon to companies in the United States, a plan of this nature will amplify economic prospects by enhancing recruiting ability and promoting the health of workers. Thus, business should have policies that mirror this support and flexibility of providing paid parental leave benefits. Despite the advantages of paid parental leave, the United States trails behind other developed countries in guaranteeing these options. In fact, America is currently "one of the only two nations (the other being Papua New Guinea) that do not guarantee paid maternity leave to new mothers" (Baum II and Ruhm 333). Last year, according to the Pew Research Center, only fourteen percent of workers had access to paid family leave (Desilver). Instead of choosing to extend paid leave for their employees, many American businesses opt to offer unpaid family leave that is available to almost ninety ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Should Parents Leave For Unpaid Leave? Essay First, it is important to emphasize why parental leave needs not only be available but why it also needs to be paid. An unpaid leave can be very expensive for most people. Providing only unpaid leave would defeat the purpose of having it in the first place because most would not even use it. In a survey by the Boston College Centre for Work and Family, they found that 86% of men would take paternity leave if it paid at least 70% of their wages. (Citation, n. pag.) On the other hand, women without access to paid maternity leave are forced to into a loss of income or loss of job altogether. This comes at a time when more expenses are sure to arise and more income is sure to be needed. In the data gathered by OECD, in most nations the government pays part of the cost of providing parental leave benefits through payroll taxes. In these nations, the employee contributes, the employer contributes, and the government contributes to make sure that benefits are universal. They have regulators, like Social Security, that takes in the contributions and distributes it to qualified citizens. Everybody contributes to minimize the burden on just one organization and to discourage discrimination against potential leave–takers. (Ray, 17) This information is in congruence with the data gathered by the International Labour Organization which is represented in Figure 4. (30) As we can see from the map, in some nations the employer shoulders the expense of payments for parental leave. VI. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Examples Of In-Depth Interview To answer my research question, I chose semi–structured in–depth interviews because it particularly lends itself to exploring challenging and complex life situations such as the return to work following parental leave. According to Valerie Yow, "the recorded in –depth interview can offer answers to questions that no other methodology can provide" (Yow 2005, 9). In her introductory chapter on in–depth interviewing, Yow specifically mentions complex decisions as a case where in–depth interviews allow us to pose questions that remain invisible in statistics and official records. Thus, while the OECD family database statistics might provide us with useful information about Hungarian mothers' decisions concerning employment, in my research I would like to ask women to explain the various and differing factors contributing to these choices.... To argue the importance of focusing on this policy over other ones, they presented the following points. First, the HR team argued that regardless of worker's age, they will eventually face a circumstance that will require them to take off to provide care to a close relative. Secondly, the company wants to remain competitive to attract and retain the best talent. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, only 13% of U.S. employers provide this benefit (March 2016). According to dictionary.com parental leave is "a leave of absence from a job for a parent to care for a new baby." Paternal leave can either be paid or unpaid and refers to many different types of leave including maternity, paternity, and adoption leave. Cambridge Dictionaries Online defines maternity leave as "the period when a woman can legally be absent from work in the weeks before and after she has a baby" and paternity leave as "a period of time that a father is legally allowed to be away from his job so that he can spend time with his new baby." This is an excellent option as it would allow parents to take paid leave but there are also many disadvantages to this approach. First, some employees, especially if they are new, often accumulate very little sick or vacation time. If someone is earning four hours a pay period and there are 26 pay periods in a year, they would only accumulate approximately 13 days of leave. If they accrue sick leave at the same rate, that would give the employee a total of 26 days of paid leave, not even a month. Adding in a typical 10 federal holidays, an employee would have approximately 36 days for which they could take leave and be paid for which does not provide adequate income for an employee who has chosen to take the full 12 weeks of leave offered by FMLA. Using up all of one's leave can also create issues. If the employee catches the flu but has used up all of their leave, they will have to take leave without pay. If the employee has more than one child and that child becomes ill, they will not have to take leave without pay in order to stay home and nurse the child. This leave without pay could be covered under FMLA but if all of the benefits were used up during paternity leave, their position could be in jeopardy if they needed to take leave without pay for unforeseen reasons.
