Unit 3
What is a Vanishing Point?
• The point where the parallel lines appear to
converge on the horizon line
1-point perspective
All lines vanish to ONE single point on the Horizon
Where are the Vanishing points?
So how many vanishing points are
there?

History of Perspective in Art
• Filippo Brunelleschi practiced perspective by
drawing outlines of buildings on mirrors. He
noticed the lines all converged on the horizon.
• Brunelleschi would then create paintings, have
the viewer look through a tiny hole in the
painting at the actual building, then in a
mirror-both the painting and the actual
building were nearly indistinguishable
Our Project: 2-Point Perspective
Cityscapes
• Draw a horizon line
• Draw 2 vanishing points
• All of the subjects in your piece should
converge on the 2 vanishing points
• Add details and be CREATIVE!
• Careful Craftsmanship is important!
