Personalized Student Support Model
Imagine this…
A learner has not logged into to the online portion of a course for a
week. The instructor receives an email alert. Student also receives
an automatic email encouraging her to reach out to the instructor.
The email provides predetermined information on how to get caught
up and a list of support staff who are in their “network of care.”
The alert and tasks are noted on the students “Individualized
learning to Career Pathway.”
Instructor looks at the student progress and “student profile” to
gather additional information. Instructor notices student has a child,
works full-time, and wants to become a chef.
Instructor sends a personal text to the students encouraging
participation and reminding student that the tutor in her network of
care can provide help with time management if needed. Instructor
also encourages learner to schedule appointment with him to talk
about finding a professional mentor. This information is recorded on
student’s ILP and tutor receives an automatic email alert.
Student completes tasks, becomes more engaged, and lands a
paid internship from her new mentor. Student successfully
completes current milestone on the ILP and progresses to the next.

Personalized Student Support Model
The Problem
Faculty and support staff often work in silos and do not communicate the needs of students.
Impact
The experience of students becomes disjointed, making students feel unsupported. This then leads to disengagement
and attrition.
Imperative
As higher education becomes more unbundled, offering multiple pathways to learning and credentials, student support
will need to adjust and become more unbundled as well. Faculty, professional advisors, tutors, librarians, and other
support professionals will need to work more intentionally and purposefully together to connect, personalize, and guide
the student experience and create a learning ecosystem where learning, development, and success are at the center.
Solution
The Personalized Student Support Model allows faculty and staff (Network of Care) to work together to create a clear
path to learning, development, and completion of academic goals. This can be achieved through the use of data and
analytics to provide indicators of student attrition (such as did not attend class, dropped a course, missed an advising
appointment, etc.) and displayed in the Individualized Learning to Career Plan Pathway Student Profile, which
nudge students to the next milestone toward completion.

Determine Network of CareDetermine Indicators to Measure
Institutions develop a shared responsibility and
commitment to student success by developing
indicators of success and attrition. These indicators
will be used to track students progress and alert
when appropriate. A pre-determined list can be
provided to get them started. Data can be
integrated from advising tools, existing early alert
systems, learning management systems, etc.
Determine Student Populations
Institutions decide which students will be in the
personalized model. They can choose by college,
department, at-risk populations, first-years,
transfers, dev ed, entire student body, etc.
Institutions decide roles within the students network
of care. They choose faculty, advisors, tutors, career
counselors, librarians, etc. These roles will work
collaboratively to provide just-in-time support for
students. The beauty of this model is that roles
do not need to change from existing roles. The
system allows better communication and
coordination among the roles.

Individualized Learning to Career Pathway and Student Profile
Individualized Learning to Career Pathway is a highly
personalized, automated system that assists students to complete
one milestone and progress to the next milestone. Each milestone
is customizable and leads to student completion. Each milestone
consists of tasks that need achieved. These tasks are automated
based on the students profile, grades, interests, academic
deficiencies, etc. The Network of Care can include additional
tasks. Members of the network receives alerts, depending on the
issue and role of the professional. The professional looks at the
student data and the Student Profile to determine the best
approach. Then, personalized outreach occurs.
