While the L&D community is increasingly familiar with the Experience API (xAPI) and its value for data collection and interoperability, few examples exist to clarify the value of xAPI as applied within different existing learning infrastructures. This session focused on sharing the ways xAPI can connect and provide value in any eLearning environment. These slides present a series of different learning ecosystem configurations and the ways xAPI and a learning record store (LRS) can provide value in each case. The three main learning ecosystem configurations examined range from the simplest (LMS and LRS) to three systems connected (LMS, LRS, and CMS) to the fully modular (LRS, LMS, simulations, microlearning, performance assessment, and other tools). For each of these configurations, the presentation shares specific values and practical applications gained by connecting an xAPI LRS to the existing system. This presentation was originally shared as part of the eLearning Guild's 2018 Learning Solutions conference on March 28, 2018.

When we think about creating an xAPI data ecosystem, we often focus on how will we collect and connect data from across the Learning & Development and HR ecosystem. But once we have that data all in one place in our Learning Record Store, now we can really get to using it. In this presentation to the Fall 2017 xAPI Cohort, we explored why and how we can use data visualizations and interactive analytics to help us see patterns in our data and apply that insight to our work. Additionally, we took a look at some role-specific xAPI data dashboards from the point of view of Managers, Instructors, and Learners.

Jisc’s research into students’ experiences and expectations of technology began in 2006 with the Learners’ Experiences of e-Learning programme. This became a reference study for the sector and helped change the way institutions understand students’ experiences with technology. Studies in partnership with the British Library, and work carried out by Jisc’s recent ‘Developing Digital Literacies' programme, have furthered our understanding of students' digital practices and needs. Now, through Jisc’s Co-Design programme, the Digital Student project has brought us up to date with how students' expectations are changing and what institutions are doing to keep up with them. This workshop will offer delegates an opportunity to engage with the findings and recommendations from the Digital Student study and to consider what impact these could have in their own institutional context. A large part of the session will be taken up with a scenario planning activity in which delegates explore different outcomes depending on whether or not institutions rise to the digital challenge. There will be an opportunity to share effective approaches and to inform the next phase of activities being planned by Jisc to support the Digital Student Experience into the future.

In recent months universities have rapidly implemented significant and often unplanned changes to the ways in which education is delivered. In large part, the nature of such changes will be temporary, although the significance of such changes may be longer lasting. But this has also allowed universities to explore opportunities that otherwise may not have been considered. One can foresee that many universities will need to focus more time and energy on their approach to technology for student learning, and as a result their digital leadership. Yet technology on its own is not the solution; it is an enabler. In this session Peter will reflect briefly on his own institution's journey towards technology-enhanced learning and support, one that encompasses a broad array of technological developments, and involved many colleagues and students, the aim of which is the delivery of a high-quality and inclusive student experience for all.

Science gateways allow science and engineering communities to access shared data, software, computing services, and instruments. Science gateways have gained a lot of traction in the last twenty years, as evidenced by projects such as the Science Gateways Community Institute (SGCI) and the Center of Excellence on Science Gateways (SGX3) in the US, The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) and its platforms in Australia, and the projects around Virtual Research Environments in Europe. A few mature frameworks have evolved with their different strengths and foci and have been taken up by a larger community such as the Globus Data Portal, Hubzero, Tapis, and Galaxy. However, even when gateways are built on successful frameworks, they continue to face the challenges of ongoing maintenance costs and how to meet the ever-expanding needs of the community they serve with enhanced features. It is not uncommon that gateways with compelling use cases are nonetheless unable to get past the prototype phase and become a full production service, or if they do, they don't survive more than a couple of years. While there is no guaranteed pathway to success, it seems likely that for any gateway there is a need for a strong community and/or solid funding streams to create and sustain its success. With over twenty years of examples to draw from, this presentation goes into detail for ten factors common to successful and enduring gateways that effectively serve as best practices for any new or developing gateway.
