- English was introduced to the Philippines in the early 1900s through American teachers brought over by the U.S. Army. Early Filipino writers imitated English and American authors as the medium of instruction transitioned to English. From 1910-1935, Filipino writers went through a period of apprenticeship where they emulated foreign styles and genres. Publications like the UP Folio and Philippine Magazine helped develop a market for literature in English. The short story became a favored form among early Filipino authors.
