Communication for Peace: How Digital Technologies can Enhance Empathy and Dia...FluidIT Solutions
This presentation explores how digital communication tools can contribute to dialogue and deeper understanding. It was presented at the Religion Communicators Congress 2010 in Chicago, USA.
~~~~~~~~~~
At all levels – from interpersonal and organizational, to community, country and world – human relationships experience conflict and need an infusion of deeper understanding and peace.
This workshop will explore ways that digital communication tools can contribute to peace building by enhancing our ability to empathize with each other more deeply, map conflict areas, or refocus dialogues around facts. Concrete case studies will ground this exploration in modern technical tools that can contribute to peace building, such as multimedia storytelling, Ushahidi conflict mapping software, and Web 2.0 tools.
This slideshow, originally done for the 2012 Computers and Writing conference, in a series of lightning round talks, is now being revised for publication.
Presentation for Computers and Writing, 2012 for the panel: Hacking the Academy. Here I examine the notion of "Hacking Narratives" through the collaborative storytelling project. A number of narratives are hacked from historical to authorial with displacement of time and authority producing new possibilities.
Few Words, Mass Effect. Travel writings and destination image. The case of Ve...Federica Montaguti
Images and words contribute to defining a tourist destination. Destinations are described both by promotional and organic sources. The narrative structures built by this mix of sources, synchronically and diachronically animate the discourse about places, defining - and being influenced by - tourist behaviour.
Focusing on the U.S. market, and using a semiotic approach to a corpus of "travel writings", combined with quantitative and qualitative market research, the study here presented shows how, even for a world-famous destination like Venice, only a few texts provided the main features of the destination image, and these same texts are still influencing it centuries afterwards.
Un evento che sarebbe stato impossibile senza il coinvolgimento di tantissimi volontari che hanno offerto il loro tempo e la loro competenza per accogliere i volontari della più grande e nota enciclopedia collaborativa della storia; una comunità di persone, associazioni, imprese, amministrazioni e istituzioni pubbliche e private di Esino Lario, della Provincia di Lecco, della Lombardia, italiane e internazionali che sostengono il sapere libero; un paese che grazie alla sua personale visione della shared economy dimostra che i piccoli posti non necessariamente fanno piccole cose, e che chiunque in ogni luogo può contribuire alla conoscenza del mondo.
A presentation which focuses on the power of Wikipedia and the issues of legitimacy and territorial control related to it. It looks at Wikipedia from a geopolitical perspective and it is based on the experience of the projects WikiAfrica (2006-2012) and Share Your Knowledge (2011-2012). The aim of the presentation is to specifically refer to 1. the offline fallout of Wikipedia and its nationalism; 2. how the offline fallout has been reinforced by the growing number of institutions interested in collaborating with Wikipedia (the so-called GLAMs) and 3. the relevance of Africa within this discourse.
As war and dispossession causes people to lose their homes and their beloved ones, on top of the trauma, it tends to leave people with strong feelings of nostalgia and melancholy. Perhaps it is this longing for the past that empowers those people and inspires them with their never-ending narratives. When their stories of tolerance, famine and prosecution are interwoven across generations, for the most part, many of them will be lost or forgotten. However, in male dominant cultures stories of women’s sufferings and tyranny are at greater risk of loss.
Sempre più musei, archivi e biblioteche nel mondo aprono i loro contenuti a vantaggio dei cittadini, rendendo disponibili le riproduzioni digitali delle loro collezioni in pubblico dominio e rilasciando la loro produzione di ricerca e materiali educativi con licenze libere. Questa presentazione raconta il progetto Empowering Italian GLAMs che ha invitato nel 2022-2024 tutti i musei italiani nell’adottare l’open access e mostra una serie di visualizzazioni che permettono di osservare il patrimonio e le istituzioni culturali italiane sui progetti Wikimedia e in particolare su Wikidata e Wikimedia Commons.
Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:
