The Effects Of Controlled Burns On Rangelands
The Effects of Controlled Burns on Rangelands
Shane J. Methvin
BYU Idaho
Abstract
There are many different techniques or methods used to manage rangelands. These methods have been
implemented to improve the health of a rangeland. One such technique that has been found to be
beneficial is controlled burning. Controlled burning can help improve rangelands for both livestock
and wildlife if managed properly. This is done by burning an area which kills undesirable woody
species, giving desirable, native grass species a chance to bounce back, as they can be choked out by
these competing woody species. Controlled burning can also have negative effects as well if managed
improperly. If controlled burns are managed properly, the overall ... Show more content on

Such was the case in the study conducted by a Texas AgriLife Research Range ecologist (Ledbetter,
2010). The focus of this study was observing the effects of summer patch fires on the reduction of
unwanted woody plants and prickly pear cacti. In this study, patches were burned rather than burning
pastures as a whole to allow livestock to continue to graze in other areas simultaneously with the
controlled burns. These burns took place in the summer rather than the winter because, prescribed fire
in the summer is more effective in controlling unwanted woody plants and prickly pear cactus than
winter fires because they burn hotter (Ledbetter, 2010). The results indicated that if controlled burning
and rotational grazing are carefully managed, success in reducing the number of unwanted plants can
be achieved (Ledbetter, 2010). Sometimes the public s opinion about burning rangelands and
regulations can influence the ability of landowners and range managers to perform controlled burns.
Many of the grasslands and areas managers wish to burn have adapted to occasional fires and native
grasses can recover quite well, while unwanted woody species are reduced. Suppression of controlled
burns, many times because of the public s opinion, can lead to an increase in these woody species,
competing for nutrients with native grasses. If controlled burns continue to be suppressed by the
public and

Taking a Look at Tessellations
Most people recognize the artistry of walls in ancient palaces, of mosaic pictures, and even of
honeycombs. Likewise, the artistry and intricacies of M.C. Escher s drawings astound most people.
When we look at these objects and artwork we recognize the shapes within them; we see squares,
hexagons and other shapes without giving them much thought. We might not even know that these
patterns of shapes have a name, and we certainly do not think of mathematics when we see them. But,
in fact, these patterns or tessellations are part of the field of geometry.
When a space is covered with a pattern of flat shapes with no overlaps or gaps it is known as a
tessellation or a tilling. Tessellations have been around for many centuries and in many different
cultures and are still prevalent today. In Latin the word tesserae means small stone cube they were
used to make up tessellata the mosaic pictures forming floors and tiling in Roman buildings. Making a
repeating pattern with a regular polygon creates regular tessellations. Triangles, squares and hexagons
are the only three shapes that can make a regular tessellation. In order for a tessellation to be regular
the pattern is identical at each vertex. A tessellation created with two or more regular polygons is
known as a semi regular tessellation. Just like in a regular tessellation in a semi regular tessellation the
pattern at each vertex is the same. The third type of tessellation is a demi regular tessellation however

The Built Environment At The Gardens Of Versailles
A review of the built environment at the Gardens of Versailles provides a rich perspective into the
political culture during the Age of Enlightenment as one defined by the absolute rule of the monarch.
Gardens at Versailles were first built by Louis XIII; however, it was during the reign of Louis XIV that
the gardens were extensively expanded and adorned into the spectacle Versailles is known for today.
Perhaps catalyzed by a hurt ego after the construction of Fouquet s grand Vaux le Vicomte which was
suspected to have been built using embezzled crown funds1, in 1661 Louis XIV began his epic project
of the gardens designed almost entirely as an expression of his absolute power. Andres Le Nôtre,
Versailles leading landscape architect, believed in the basic conception that landscape should be more
impressive than the buildings it comprehends2. With over 800 hectares of gardens, the size of
Versailles alone is quite daunting. Using forced perspective, Le Nôtre, further extended the site in the
mind s eye creating a scale incomparable to the surrounding villages3. No doubt those who visited the
gardens were filled with awe, perhaps even fear. Versailles provided an almost urban environment,
housing France s aristocracy. Though the nobility was relatively pampered, there was no question that
the king was in charge. Elaborate terracing, for example, gave the gardens hierarchical structure
symbolizing feudal society, purposefully reinforcing the nobility s servility by literally

Wrestling Meet Research Paper
When people are at a wrestling meet there are many things that people might notice. The most
noticeable ones are smell, taste, touch, sound, and sight. Just like in ordinary life there are many things
that you can smell, taste, touch, hear, and see. Most of the time when people walk into a place the first
thing you will notice it the smell. When you walk into a wrestling meet there can be many different
smells, but it can depend on when you get there. The most noticeable smells that you will notice are
sweat, food, and the mat cleaner. The most noticeable smell is the sweat, or the food. If you get to the
meet before it starts you are going to smell the food first, because the wrestlers have not started
wrestling yet. Most of the time you ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are many different noises at a wrestling meet. The most noticeable one is the coach s and the
people in the crowd yelling. The coach s yell to get the wrestler to do what they say, and the people in
the crowd yell at the referee s if they think that they did something wrong. You can hear the
cheerleaders pounding on the mat and yelling their cheers. These things can be a negative if you are
sensitive to sounds. If you are in the crowd you will most likely hear kids running up and down the
bleachers when they are either going to the bathroom, or they are trying to find something to do.
When the wrestlers lose their match then they get mad and take off their headgear as fast as they can
and go to the sides. When they throw their gear you can either hear it hit a chair or the floor and it will
make a loud noise. When the wrestlers lose most people stay quiet because they know that if you
cheer then it can make the person that lost feel worse about losing. If the wrestlers lose their meet then
on the way home on the bus the cheerleaders and everyone else have to be quiet so that they can think
about what to do better and not to make them feel worse about

Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Inflammatory Bowel Disease
1. Describe the pathopysiology of the disease you have chosen What is the spectrum of
disease/pathology the disease? Is the disease characterized by inflammation, etc? Is it an infectious
and/or chronic disease? If so what is the agent, its reservoir, mode of transmission etc.
Inflammatory bowel disease is a chronic illness characterized by inflammation in the gastrointestinal
tract (Wolf, CDC, Mayo clinic, health direct, NHS choices). Patients suffering from inflammatory
bowel disease usually face with severe chronic pain in their stomach, diarrhea, which may contain
blood, loss of appetite, joint pains, skin problems, fever, fatigue, etc. Symptoms can appear for periods
of time and can appear in different ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Though anyone at any age can develop inflammatory bowel disease, the people between the ages of
fifteen and thirty are more likely to get diagnosed with the disease, with about 10% of cases occurring
to individuals younger than eighteen (CDC). People who are direct descendents of those with
inflammatory bowel disease and other gastrointestinal problems are more likely to develop the disease
themselves (CDC, Wolf, Mayo clinic). Though anyone can develop the disease, inflammatory bowel
disease is most common in those with a European and Jewish descent, who are Caucasian, and those
who are White (CDC, Wolf, Mayo clinic). Females are more likely to develop Crohn s, while males
are more likely to develop Crohn s (CDC).
Inflammatory bowel disease is more common in developed countries, with a greater frequency in
urban areas than in rural areas, indicating globalization to be a contributing factor for inflammatory
bowel disease (CDC, Ghosh and Almadi). Australia seems to have one of the highest incidence rates
of the disease in the world with about 33,000 having colitis and 28,000 (health direct). Inflammatory
bowel disease is also one of the most prevalent gastrointestinal disease in the United States with the
prevalence of the disease being greater than 200 cases per 100,000 and a total of about one million to
1.5 million people having the disease currently (CDC, Wolf, Rubin et al).

Evidence In Mandel s Evidence
The set of archive images that constitute Sultan and Mandel s Evidence, were the culmination of two
years research within an array of government agencies, educational institutions and corporations: from
the Aeronutronic Ford Corporation, Newport Beach to the Veterans Administration Hospital, Palo
Alto. The artists were granted access to millions of photographs within these spaces and therein
embarked on a critical process of appropriation. As Sultan states, Mike and I, through the act of
selection, became authors (BAMPFA, 2012). Throughout the work we are focused on the notion of the
photograph as index: the trace of a footprint on wet paving slabs, a passport photo next to a hand print
in sand. Despite this very specific reference the status of the photograph, as an empiric document, is
continually questioned, not least in the title of the work. The concept of ... Show more content on

function. As Mandel states it is that, duet between a depicted document and a world that is out of
control (BAMPFA, 2012). The photographs seem to have a transparent nature that is illustrative, but in
the context of the artwork, devoid of the original information structure they once had, they are weird
and fascinating. We are directed to experiments, to physical journeys into the substrata of spaces, into
tunnels, down holes, into freezing basements, inside machines. The focus of an object within some of
the photographs may be intended for post production cropping. However objects are only half isolated
within the confines of the image through the creation of makeshift studio spaces. In this context
participants are absorbed within the confines of their activity, and by implication a system of meaning
that we, as the audience, are not privy

Legalized Gambling In The United States
Obviously, there are glaring inconsistencies with legalized gambling from state to state. Sports
gambling and Internet poker are very popular among American gamblers in every state, but both
remain almost entirely illegal in the U.S. There are some other gambling black markets, but sports
gambling and online poker are the two primary underground markets of truly significant size. Millions
of Americans skirt the law by gambling with companies based in different countries where that
activity is legal. This is a lucrative market as approximately $30 billion was gambled by Americans
with foreign Internet gambling sites from 2003 to 2010. Consequently, the Department of Justice and
the FBI have shut down several high profile offshore gambling companies. Nonetheless, this type of
activity remains readily available for American consumers as there are 85 countries with sanctioned
Internet gambling.
It s necessary to understand the history behind these failed policies. The Federal Wire Act of 1961 has
been the primary federal statute for prosecuting illegal sports gambling and decades later it has
remained as the legal basis behind shutting down several offshore gambling operations. The Wire Act
was a creation of Robert F. Kennedy while he served as the U.S. Attorney General. The primary ...

Essay on The Meaning of Love
The Meaning of Love Love has many different meanings to different people. For a child, love is what
he or she feels for his mommy and daddy. To teenage boy, love is what he should feel for his girlfriend
of the moment, only because she says she loves him. But as we get older and wiser, love becomes
more and more confusing. Along with poets and philosophers, people have been trying to answer that
age old question for centuries: What is love? One definition of love in The Merriam Webster
dictionary is attraction based on sexual desire (439). Some people believe that love and sex are one in
the same. If two people are in love, they should be having sex. And, on the flipside, if two people are
having sex, they must be in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This passage obviously alludes to sex, but sex is not completely necessary when there is love. The
speaker in Sharon Olds Sex without Love asks, How do they do it, the ones who make love / without
love? (1 2). Love is deeper and more meaningful than just physical or sexual attraction. Love is a
feeling an emotion. Love is also defined in the dictionary as strong affection, warm attachment, and
unselfish loyal and benevolent concern for others (439). All of these definitions are completely
correct, but the dictionary does not explain how it feels to love someone. The reason that an
explanation for this feeling is not found in the dictionary may be because love is so different for each
individual person. In my experience, strong affection does not even begin to cover the sensation and
emotions a person feels when he or she is in love. Love is compared to the extraordinary sun /
splashing its light / into astonished trees in Denise Levertov s Love Poem (2 4). Like the sun, love is
great and bright and fills a person with extreme joy. Love is greater than anything else a person could
ever experience. A lover can even be better than a summer s day, as the speaker in Shakespeare s poem
suggests. He compares his lover to a summer s day by saying that she is more

Themes In The Chrysanthemums
In the story The Chrysanthemums by John Steinbeck, a woman name Elisa and her husband live in a
valley closed off from the people and places around them. Elisa is a very lonely and confided person,
who is unsure of her green thumb abilities. She has a garden full of Chrysanthemums which to most
green thumbs are some of the hardest to care for, but Elisa dose it effortlessly. The story sets a scene of
a dark and closed off area in which they live. The first paragraph says The high grey flannel fog of
winter closed off the Salinas Valley from the sky and from all the rest of the world. On every side, it
sat like a lid on the mountains and made of the great valley a closed pot (Steinbeck 1). This hints at us
how where they live might affect the confidence of Elisa. Living in an area closed off from the world
around you will keep you from growing and building as a person. Elisa already is unsure of herself.
Elisa s appearance shows how she never is worried about her looking her best, Her figure looked
blocked and heavy in her gardening costume, a man s black hat pulled low down over her eyes,
clodhopper shoes, a figured print dress almost completely covered by a big corduroy apron with four
big pockets to hold the snips (Steinbeck 1). Elisa being in such a closed off environment dose not add
to her social interaction.
The house they live in is a farmhouse with lots of land separating one another from their neighbors.
This means the contact Elisa has is just of her husband on a day to day basis. Her husband, Henry,
believes she is a great green thumb. He leans over the fence to tell Elisa You got a strong new crop
coming (Steinbeck 2). He goes out without her to the city to watch fights, but only jokingly asks her to
come. Henry loves his wife, but when she talks about expanding her garden he never really says much
back to her. For example, Elisa begins to talk about how she thinks maybe growing her garden would
be a good idea and he doesn t encourage her, he just skips to talking about date night. He says, And I
thought, he continued, I thought how it s Saturday afternoon, and we might go into Salinas for dinner
at a restaurant, and then to a picture show to celebrate, you see (Steinbeck 3).

Currently, 79% of the workforce of 1320 employees are Caucasian and the other 21% can be broken
down into minority groups of 10% Latino, 7% Asian, 1% Black, and 3% Native American/Pacific
Islander (Ratliffe, February 2014). Current initiatives that Tuality has in the works for 2015 is to
improve diversity of its workforce and, therefore, improve its service to the minority population in the
area. Based on the Community Health Needs Assessment Report, the population configuration of
whom Tuality serves averages roughly 25% Latino patients (Tuality Healthcare, 2014). To better serve
those patients, Tuality must attract, hire and retain more minority employee in direct patient care
professions such as physicians and nurses that will reflect a better match to the patient base.
The third pillar, community reputation for unparalleled value, is perhaps the largest hurdle to
overcome. It is hard to expect patients to use Tuality if they do not believe they will get good value for
their money and have positive health outcomes. Because of being a small organization, Tuality has to
work harder to achieve similar outcomes of patient satisfaction than its larger Portland area
counterparts. Tuality serves a smaller number of patients, and when mistakes happen it increases the
percentage of bad experiences for patients and lowers the HCAHPS scores. The HCAHPS

The Importance Of Colors In Gilead
Imagery, particularly when describing beautiful colors before Gilead and contrasting them with the
dull colors described in Gilead reveal how drastically life has changed. Offred mentions that in the
past when she took her daughter to get ice cream, everything was colored so delicately, pale orange,
pale green, pale pink and that her daughter, dressed in similar ice cream pastels would choose her treat
by the color (Atwood 165). In life before Gilead, colors were vivid and cheerful, something to make
objects more enjoyable to look at. People could wear whatever color they please, and colors had no
additional meaning to them other than to show people had freedom to make their own decisions.
However, in Gilead, color imagery shows the lack of decision and the rigid societal structure the
government imposes. Each group has their own colors even in minor aspects of life, such as with
umbrellas categorized as black, for the Commander, blue, for the Commander s Wife, and the one
assigned to [Offred], which is red (Atwood 9). Each color labels members of the society as part of a
certain category and defines their roles without further consideration. Here, colors serve as a way to
restrict peoples freedoms unlike when colors previously served as way to enhance freedom of choice
and expression. In Gilead, The women... are color coded to strip them of their individual identities and
to mark their social status and relationships to men restricting everyone s freedom, even the

Discounted Cash Flow
discounted cash flow (DCF
In finance, discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis is a method of valuing a project, company, or asset
using the concepts of the time value of money. All future cash flows are estimated and discounted to
give their present values (PVs) the sum of all future cash flows, both incoming and outgoing, is the net
present value (NPV), which is taken as the value or price of the cash flows in question.
Using DCF analysis to compute the NPV takes as input cash flows and a discount rate and gives as
output a price; the opposite process taking cash flows and a price and inferring a discount rate, is
called the yield.
Discounted cash flow analysis is widely used in investment finance, real estate development, and
corporate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Using the DPV formula above (FV=$150,000, i=0.05, n=3), that means that the value of $150,000
received in three years actually has a present value of $129,576 (rounded off). In other words we
would need to invest $129,576 in a T Bond now to get $150,000 in 3 years almost risk free. This is a
quantitative way of showing that money in the future is not as valuable as money in the present
($150,000 in 3 years isn t worth the same as $150,000 now; it is worth $129,576 now).
Subtracting the purchase price of the house ($100,000) from the present value results in the net present
value of the whole transaction, which would be $29,576 or a little more than 29% of the purchase
price.
Another way of looking at the deal as the excess return achieved (over the risk free rate) is (14.5%
5.0%)/(100%+5%) or approximately 9.0% (still very respectable).
But what about risk?
We assume that the $150,000 is John s best estimate of the sale price that he will be able to achieve in
3 years time (after deducting all expenses, of course). There is of course a lot of uncertainty about
house prices, and the outcome may end up higher or lower than this estimate.
(The house John is buying is in a good neighborhood, but market values have been rising quite a lot
lately and the real estate market analysts in the media are talking about a slow down and higher
interest rates. There is a probability that John might not be able to get the full

students that had high regards for character, service, and education. In order to apply one had to have a
GPA of a 3.5 or higher and once you were able to apply you must have 30 recorded hours of
community service and then an essay explaining yourself in terms of character, service, and education.
Once welcomed into the society, we did volunteer work for the community and other events to help
other students improve their abilities in a variety of school topics. The volunteer work from both clubs

Callicles Vs Socrates
In Gorgias, Plato presents a series of conversations Socrates has with Gorgias and Callicles that
explore oratory and the rules of law and nature. Socrates criticism of oratory and espousement of the
rule of law imply a dislike for democracy, but for different reasons than Callicles dislike. Through
these conversations, Plato suggests that democracy is actually a rule of nature with orators as the
superiors. Socrates and Callicles converse about the rule of law and the rule of nature because
Callicles wants Socrates to talk only about one, especially the rule of nature. Callicles has a problem

As stated before, Callicles believes the people who institute ... laws are the weak and many and that it
s a just thing for the better man and the more capable man to have a greater share than the worse man
and the less capable man (483b, 483d). He wishes for a society where the better deserve to have more
and do get more than what the lesser get. Thus, he hates democracy. He believes democracy would
take away from those who deserve more and would give the lesser more power than needed. Socrates,
on the other hand, fears the power of orators over uneducated masses. Socrates makes clear from
Gorgias that oratory doesn t need to have any knowledge of the state of their subject matters and that it
only needs to have discovered a persuasion device to make itself appear to those who don t have any
knowledge that it knows more than those who actually do have it (459c). Socrates is concerned that
the public can be convinced by orators to do things that orators have no knowledge of. Socrates wants
people s soul to stay pure and avoid corruption. However, if people listen to an orator in a democracy
and do something unjust, they would have no punishment because they would be the ones who agreed
upon the action. Thus, Socrates favors when the masses listen to someone who knows what is just. For
Socrates, democracy can be arbitrary based on the whims of orators and what they see fit ending up in

The Theory Of Psychology And Personality Development
Personality Report
There are many theorists that have made psychology incredible, and have paved the way for what we
believe psychology to consist of today. Some important theorists that I believe have made a huge
contribution are Sigmund Freud, Karen Horney, and Dollard and Miller. These theorists have all had
their own view on personality development, and I believe that these ideas have shaped the way in
which we view psychology today. The many interpretations of conflict, psychotherapy, and cultural
and biological aspects of personality have shaped their views and differences as well.
Sigmund Freud, known as the father of psychology, developed some of the first theories of modern
psychology. One of his well known theories is the structural model of the psyche. According to Freud,
most of what drives individuals is buried in the unconscious mind. There are three main forces that
drive humans, which include the id, the ego, and the super ego. The id is the summation of basic
personal needs and desires. It is completely self centered, and has no care for sensibility or reality. It
strives for what it wants, when it wants it with no other considerations. The second part of the
personality is the ego. The ego is the realization of reality. It is the ego s job to, in a sense, counteract
the selfishness and impractically if the id. The third part, the super ego, is morals and acquired beliefs
of right and wrong. According to Freud, in order to have a healthy personality, one s

The Cranberries Pros And Cons
The Cranberries The cranberries originally started out at The Cranberry Saw Us. Based out of
Limerick Ireland. After their original singer left the band put out an ad in 1990 for a female singer.
Dolores O Riordan responded and after coming up with a rough draft of the song Linger was hired
immediately. After Dolores joined the band released a mix tape that sold out the 300 original copies.
After this the band decided to shorten its name to The Cranberries. The band consisted of vocalist
Dolores O Riordan, Noel Hogan as guitarist, Mike Hogan as the bassist and Fergal Lawler as the
drummer. The band s music style fell under the alternative rock genre but is sometimes referred to as
Celtic Rock. A few of the main influences that the band listed are R.E.M, U2, and Peter Gabriel.
Fallowing their initial success the band decided to release another mix tape that consisted of the early
versions of two of their biggest songs. The hype from this release caught the band a lot of attention
which eventually ended up in record labels in a bidding war over the young band. When the dust
settled the band had signed on with island records. The all of the albums that the band released in the

Nazca Research Paper
Nazca Traveling somewhere new and gaining new experiences is exceedingly beneficial. Challenging
yourself, expanding your perspective, and learning about new cultures are just some of the benefits. If
I could travel anywhere in the world where would I go? Somewhere like the beach or the mountains?
The one place I would choose to visit is the town of Nazca. This town is specifically known for The
Nazca Lines. The Nazca lines are large geoglyphs created by removing large amounts of rock and dirt,
located in the Peruvian Desert within southern Peru. These lines are believed to be created by the
Nazca tribe somewhere between 500 BC and 500 AD. the lines were discovered by Peruvian
archaeologist Toribio Mejia Xesspe in 1927. The nazca lines depict creatures such as fish, birds, and
other animals. They are said to be made up over 800 straight lines, 300 geometric designs. Most of the
lines are between 10 to 30 cm deep. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to some scientist and conspiracist these lines were created to attract aliens. Others believe it
was a monument to their gods. However the biggest mystery is how the Nazca people were able to
create such precise geoglyphs without an aerial view. The largest figure stretches about 200 meters
long. There are some scholars who believe that the Nazca Lines is one of the earliest examples of
applied geometry. Tens of thousands of visitors vacation there every year. Other than the preeminent
architectural sites another entrancing point is the Nazca Channels. The ancient Nazca people created
an underground aqueduct system irrigates the drylands. However, undeterred by this harsh climate the
Nazcas, aided by the aqueducts were able to grow cotton fields, corn, beans, potatoes, and numerous
fruits. For the Nazcas when it came to pottery and textiles they were ahead of their

Social Autonomy In Canada In The 1900 s
Between 1900 and 1929, Canada became significantly more autonomous socially, politically, and
economically from Britain and the United States; however, there were still times where Canada s
autonomy had decreased due to Canada s dependence on Britain and the United States. Canada had
gained political autonomy from Britain when it was officially and internationally recognized as an
independent nation. Economically, Canada was very reliant on British and American investment.
However, Canada s social autonomy had increased because of the first world war and entertainment,
like art and literature.
Politically, Canada s autonomy had increased greatly from 1900 to 1929. In the early 1900 s, the

As young men gathered and worked together at Valcartier for wartime training, they began to develop
a sense of Canadian identity. During the war, Canadian soldiers gained social autonomy from Britain
as Canada s expeditionary force maintained independent from British units. For the first time,
Canadian troops were chosen to lead an assault in the Battle of Vimy Ridge. They had captured more
land, guns, and prisoners than any other British troop. Following this triumph, a Canadian, Arthur
Currie, was selected to command Canada s troops in the Battle of Passchendaele. The success of
Canadian soldiers had given them sense of national pride and identity. In the soaring 1920 s, all types
of entertainment and leisure were developed, the two major forms of entertainment being film and
radio. American radio companies diminished Canada s sense of social autonomy because they were far
too big for Canadian radio stations to compete with. As a result, many Canadians tuned into American
stations for entertainment and their news. Furthermore, the film industry was also dominated by the
Americans and Canadian made films could not compete with productions from the big studios in the
United States. However, Canadians developed a sense of national identity in the form of art and
literature. A Canadian art movement swept across Canada and artists like the Group of Seven gained

common arrangement today. The biologic manufacturers that choose to work under the sole
manufacturing model prefer to use either multi use facilities or pilot plants. Multi use facilities and
pilot plans permit production of several products. Cooperative manufacturing concept has four
additional types of manufacturing arrangement: Short supply arrangement The most limited

World Gains From Optimism
What the world gains from Optimism:
Usually, when you think of an optimist, you might think of a bright cheery person wearing bright
happy colors skipping happily down a sidewalk, right? And while that sounds like a wonderful way to
live, that s not quite how optimism always looks. (But hey, if it works for you, be my guest!)
Optimism is often overlooked and misunderstood in today s society. We really have no idea how
beneficial the effects of optimism are for us. From healthier hearts to even living longer, optimism
sure is a helpful tool that s easily accessible and makes the journey of life a lot more fun!
Optimism shockingly, has a direct correlation to physical health as seen in many researches conducted
by multiple people. A healthier ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Researchers actually found that individual factors like age, income level, education, gender, etc. had a
smaller than expected impact on optimism, and that national factors like GDP and life expectancy didn
t really have an impact on optimism at all. So really no matter how harsh the circumstances, we all can
be positive.
Findings from a study conducted a few years ago by neuroscientist Elizabeth Phelps suggest that
directing our thoughts of the future toward the positive is a result of our frontal cortex communicating
with subcortical regions deep in our brain. The frontal cortex, a large area behind the forehead, is the
most recently evolved part of the brain. It is larger in humans than in other primates and is critical for
many complex human functions such as language and goal setting. We just have to use that frontal
cortex and decide to choose the positive route.
So now we know how beneficial it is for us to use that daily optimistic thinking. From heart health,
boosted immune systems, and longer lives optimism can do it all for us. Lots of people in our society
don t always adapt to this system because of older primal habit, but as proven, anyone can change to
the positive side as long as their willing. So are you ready to smile nonstop, wear bright clothes, and
skip everywhere? Let s be

During his lifetime, Alexander has completed many long conquests and gained victory in vital wars

conquest was the Battle of Granicus River which occurred on May 334 BCE. It was fought near the
city of Troy and the first of three major battles that was fought between Alexander and the Persian
Empire. Alexander s army faced the Persians on the third day of May from Abydos. Parmenion, the
second in command of Alexander, suggested crossing the river upstream and attacking at dawn the
next day, but Alexander attacked immediately. This tactic caught the Persians off guard. The
Macedonian had special way of attacking. The phalanx tactic to attack consisted of a line that was
arrayed with the heavy combat soldiers in the middle, and cavalry on either side. The Persians
expected that the main assault would come from Alexander s position and moved units from their
center to that flank. The total casualties for the Greeks were between 300 and 400. Likewise, the
Persians had 1,000 cavalries and 3,000 infantry killed. After being victorious in the battle, Alexander

The Experience of Media Violence for Children
Media Violence By the time a child reaches the age of one, they see about 200,000 acts of violence on
television. (Nakaya, 3). The Media has been becoming more and more violent over the years. A poll in
an issue of Times Magazine, from 2005, showed that 66 percent of Americans think that there is an
abundant amount of graphic acts of violence on televisions (Nakaya, 18). People are exposed to
thousands of acts of violence through video games, television, and movies. Many studies show that
media violence increases violent behavior in in humans. Studies show, violent video games, and
graphic television have physiological effects on children. The government has very few regulations on
media violence. Some people believe the government shouldn t limit content because others might be
insulted by its material. Even though the government shouldn t censor the media, Media violence is
becoming a serious issue because it is becoming more violent, it makes people behave violently, and it
has little regulations. The regularity and asperity of media violence has dramatically increased over
the years. Media violence is such a broad topic, so we cannot simple get rid of it. People are exposed
violent acts in the media everyday between video games, movies, and television. The Federal

purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between selected student and school level
variables and mathematics performance of Turkish students using PISA 2012 dataset. Two research
questions were investigated: (1) How much do schools vary in their mean mathematics achievement in
Turkey? (2) Which student and school level variables are associated with students mathematics
performance in Turkey based on PISA 2012 results? Theoretical Framework PISA is a 3 year cycle of
international assessment, which has been organized by Organization for Economic Co operation and
Development (OECD) since 2000. The primary aim of the PISA assessments is to determine the
extent to which young people, who are 15 years old, have acquired the wider knowledge and skills
that they will need in their real life challenges with considering a literacy perspective in reading,
mathematics, and science. According to PISA 2012 overall results, Turkey ranked 44th, 42nd, and
43rd positions across the 65 countries in mathematics, reading and science, respectively (OECD,
2014b). In this present study, some student and school variables were chosen to determine if there is

Austen had been dead for 70 years when family members gave permission to exploit that portray in

The Combustion Of Household Fuels
The Combustion of Household Fuels
Introduction
Fire, from humans first interactions with it, has been terrifying, delighting, and mysterious all at once.
Yet it is impossible to imagine a day passing without any interactions with the phenomenon. From
burning wood in the fireplace, to preparing tea on a stove operating with natural gas, to using charcoal
for a backyard barbecue, different objects are chosen as the source of combustion depending on the
task that they need to accomplish. Furthermore, with parents, teachers, and firefighters incessantly
warning students not to place certain substances close to nearby ignition sources, one cannot help but
wonder how the chemical characteristics of these substances play a role in determining ... Show more

Further experiments would then need to be performed to gain a complete understanding of the benefits
and consequences of combusting certain fuels.
Background Information
The combustion of the hydrocarbons and organic molecules found in fuels is a chemical reaction that
primarily involves the oxidation of carbon and hydrogen in various compounds to release heat and
produce water and carbon dioxide. When the environment lacks sufficient oxygen, rendering oxygen
as the limiting reagent in the reaction, incomplete combustion would occur. This involves the
production of other chemicals such as carbon monoxide and solid carbon in addition to water and
carbon dioxide. The general chemical equations for the incomplete and complete combustion of
hydrocarbons are as follows:
Complete: CxHy + O2(g) → H2O(l) + CO2(g)
Incomplete: CxHy + O2(g) → H2O(l) + CO2(g) + CO(g) + C(s)
Of course, the composition of each fuel varies, yet the main organic molecule they contain can be used
to formulate the basic chemical reaction that is undergone when each substance is combusted. In the
case with fondue fuel, methanol is the main substance that is responsible for combustion and can be
represented with the following equation (NIST 2015):
2 CH3OH(l) + 3 O2(g) → 2 CO2(g) + 4 H2O(l),where is 725.7 kJ/mol

immigrants are illegally crossing the border causing issues and tension with existing United States

Once immigrants become citizens they ultimately benefit society for everyone by paying taxes and
serving others. Making the naturalization process easier would create jobs for immigrants and help
them to live legally in the US safely. Some oppose this option because they believe citizens would
begin to overpopulate. Actually, the only number that would increase would be the number of United
States citizens, not the number of immigrants overall. Making the citizenship process easier and
simpler would accommodate the immigrants by making them eligible for jobs and legal, steady
income with all the benefits of a United States citizen. Because of the inability to find legal labor as an
illegal immigrant, many turn to human trafficking as an occupation. As stated by Tsin Yen Koh, a
graduate student from Harvard, Tightening immigration policies and controls increases human
trafficking. It becomes more difficult for labor migrants to enter and work in the destination country
legally. (Koh). Koh is explaining in this article that if the policies on one entering the United States
along with citizenship were loosened, trafficking would not be such a major issue. Similarly, Marissa
Urgate wrote in her Journal of Trauma Practice as a result of the United States creating restrictions
against illegal immigrants, they engage in labor jobs such as prostitution and trafficking (Urgate).

The Importance Of Creon In Shakespeare By Sophocles ...
In Antigone, it is generally believed that the gods possess limitless power and are able to control the
fate of every mortal, no matter how powerful. However, there are also people who believe that they
can change their fate, only if they have enough power. Creon, the most powerful mortal in the play, is
one of those people. Due to the unmatched amount of power he has over Thebes, Creon feels he is
able to challenge the gods and the fate given to him. After attempting to do so, he finds himself stuck
with a tragic fate, resulting in the loss of everything dear to him, including his power. Sophocles uses
Creon as a way to show that everyone has a physical limit, but not a mental limit. When our thoughts
and beliefs cause us to act beyond that physical limit, fate will always be there to provide the

The play introduces Creon as a character whose power enables him to do as he pleases. After
becoming the king of Thebes, he immediately recognizes his power. Shortly after being introduced
into the play, Creon passes a proclamation stating, Never at my hand will the traitor be honored above
the patriot. (Lines 232 233). Due to his personal beliefs towards the sons of Oedipus, Creon passes a
law forbidding the burial of Polynices, the brother who fought against Thebes during war. In no
attempt to object, the Leader responds saying, The power is yours, I suppose, to enforce it with the
laws, both for the dead and all of us, the living. (Lines 238 240).

African American Health Paper
Marlen Macedo
Intro to Sociology
03/05/16
African Americans Health Paper African American men have a lower exposure to tobacco, yet 50%
are more likely to get lung cancer compared to white men. There are several diseases that strike or
target African Americans, it may be a genetic or a non genetic health issue, but very common to them.
Non genetic diseases that are more common within the African Americans are lung diseases, heart
diseases, and diabetes. A genetic disorder would be sickle cell anemia. While they affect other races as
well, african americans are more likely to get them. Lung diseases in african americans vary from
asthma, sarcoidosis, and lung cancer. Asthma is a lung disease in which causes inflammation and

Type two diabetes is a condition that affects the way the body produces blood sugar, glucose. Diabetes
is 60% more common in black americans than white americans. DeNoon mentioned that they are also
2.5 times more likely to suffer a limb amputation. Most people with type two diabetes do not know
they have it or recognize the early signs. Some common early signs and symptoms are increased thirst
and hunger, frequent urination or urinary tract infections and also blurred vision. It is not a genetic
disorder but can be associated by older relatives whom were diagnosed. A reason why diabetes gets
worse to an african american rather than a white american is because many of them are in a high crime
neighborhood location. They cannot just walk out and exercise because they simply just don t feel safe
to do so. They don t have a decent local grocery with fresh vegetables and fruits. Regular exercise and
a healthy diet is a key role for diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity. But since they are in a
location where it is not safe or the supplies are not decentable enough, they are more likely to be
having these common conditions more than

Ancient Empires Political Power Analysis
Philanthropist Walter Annenberg once said, The greatest power is not money power, but political
power. This can be seen in how ancient empires rose and stayed in power. Before 600 C.E. ancient
empires exerted political power through a variety of methods, including military importance, creating
legal systems, and using punishments.
Ancient empires used military importance, legal systems, and punishments to exert political power.
The use of military importance can be seen in documents 1, and 2. Both of these documents speak of
the pride taken in the achievements of their military and the goods that have been procured because of
their conquest. An example from document 1 is the statement, Next to prowess in arms, it is regarded
as the greatest proof of manly excellence to be the father of many sons... and in document 2 it says,
Because of the greatness of our city the fruits of the whole earth flow in upon us; so that we enjoy the
goods of other countries as freely as of our own . The use of legal systems can be seen in documents 2,
3, 4, and 5. All these documents express laws in place to ensure equality, obedience, and moral values.
Some examples can be seen in document 2, The law secures equal justice to all alike in their private
disputes... and document 3, Strict laws are used by rulers to prevent disobedience and expel the
selfish... This is effective because it creates order, which causes an empire to be easier to manage for
the ruler, allowing him/her to focus on

Track Developmental Milestones
The reason why Ms. Carolyn stated that it is important to track developmental milestones is because
you will never know when you will catch something different from the child. It also helps with
making a milestone checklist because it helps with keeping up with each child s progress. Because of
using a checklist, it helps keep Ms. Carolyn in check and helps with thinking of things her children
should be doing next. It s also important to track developmental milestone because it s useful for the
families of the children. The reason why it is important for the families is because it can give great
information with families so they know what to look for next along with her. One of the
developmental milestones for nine months of age was language/communication.

Advertising Strategies Essay
Advertising Strategies
When an advertiser places one of their advertisements into a newspaper, they want their advertisement
to appeal to the readers of that particular magazine. They could have the exact same message, but
considering their audience, they could make it more effective if they use a different strategy to market
their product. This is very common for advertising strategies to change when the content of the
magazine changes. You can relate the way that the magazine producers choose their ads by when
Steve Craig says that program producers and schedulers must consider the target audience needs of
their clients (162). The types of advertisements are driven by the content of the magazine. Sports
Illustrated provides a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At the top of that half of the page, the words The longer you wait are there. On the other side of the
advertisement, there is a professional fisherman standing in a professional fishing boat which is
sponsored by Evan Williams. He is also wearing a jacket that has the Evan Williams logo across the
front. He is clearly is more special then the average Joe seen on the left side of the advertisement. In
order for the professional fisherman to look better, that half of the ad is printed in color to give it a
more lively feeling. At the bottom of the picture, the words the better it gets. are there creating a
suggestion to the reader that if you have the patience, things will always become better. To tie the
picture back into a promotional opportunity for Evan Williams, there is a picture of a bottle of Evan
Williams whiskey in between the two pictures claiming that it is Extra Aged . In the bottom right hand
corner of the advertisement, it also says Evan Williams. Aged longer to taste smoother. The ad is
trying to sell the fact that because the fisherman waited a long time, he turned out to become a
professional, and since the whiskey they make was aged, it also became better, just like the fisherman.
The reason that they chose to connect the fisherman to the quality of their whiskey was because they
anticipated a lot of males that read Sports Illustrated to be sports minded and be just like that average
Joe fisherman. Evan

The World Is Flat by Thomas Friedman
The book, The World is Flat, by Thomas Friedman draws attention to some very good points
concerning globalization and the world economy today. Friedman emphasizes the status of America
today in relation to the other countries of the world. As I looked at the things in which he warned
about or highlighted, I realized the importance of this issue. He talks about a few aspects in which
need to be kept competitive in order for America to retain their current standing in the world market.
First of all, Friedman talks about the different levels of globalization. There are 3 different time
periods in which the society has differed and changed, bringing us to where we are today.
Globalization 1.0, which took place from 1492 to 1800, was the ... Show more content on

This is the area in which I think Friedman s theory is slightly flawed. He seems to say that there was
almost no sort of international communication, relation, or business before the discovery of the new
world.
Following globalization 1.0 came 2.0. This was the time from 1800 to 2000. There were many
advances in this period that drastically changed the world in which we live today. Communication,
transportation, and growing trade markets influenced and brought us to multinational companies,
which greatly shrunk the world down to yet another smaller size.
Today, we are in the globalization 3.0 phase, in which communication (mostly through the Internet)
and transportation are at a level in which distance hardly poses any problem at all. Another very large
issue in this era is the concept of outsourcing. This is the idea that if an item can be produced more
cheaply outside of the company/region, it will be. The market will go to the cheapest source of
production.
Many of the countries or cultures that have been transformed by the flattening of the world have been
affected because of their upper hand through education. We as Americans have gotten used to being
elite over the years due to our high economic standing and educational excellence, but in recent years,
the educational agenda has increased in other countries, while America s education has seemed to
decline. This is an area in which we need to

Australia Soft Drink Market
Cultural Background
The FSANZ phone survey of adolescents and young adults in Australia found that Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islanders were more likely to consume sugar sweetened soft drinks compared to other
Australians (72 per cent versus 50 per cent) and consumed significantly larger amounts (249 ml versus
128 ml per day) (Food Standards Australia New Zealand 2003a). The 2004 SPANS survey of children
in Years 6 10 in NSW found consumption of soft drinks to be lowest among students of Asian
background and highest among boys of Southern European and Middle Eastern background (Booth et
al. 2006).

One of the few studies examining the factors affecting soft drink consumption in adults showed that
consumption of sugar sweetened soft drinks was associated with less restrained and more external
eating, i.e. sensitive to external stimuli such as taste (Elfhag et al. 2007). The study, conducted among
3265 adults in Sweden showed that, in contrast, diet soft drinks were consumed by persons with a
higher body mass index (BMI) (possibly in an attempt to reduce their weight), more restrained eating
and more emotional eating.
Parents as Models
A study in Australia showed that the influence of mothers, either as models of eating behaviours or as
the providers of food, is pervasive (Campbell et al. 2007). Parental soft drink consumption was
positively associated with younger children s intake in two studies (Grimm et al. 2004; Vereecken et
al. 2004). Mother s consumption was found to be an independent predictor for regular soft drink
consumption among children in Belgium (Vereecken et al. 2004). In the US, children aged 8 13 years
whose parents regularly drank soft drinks were nearly three times more likely to consume soft drinks
five or more times per week compared with those whose parents did not regularly drink soft drinks
(Grimm et al. 2004).
A higher frequency of preparing food was found to be related to lower intakes of carbonated
beverages among female adolescents in the US (Larson

Tsa Policies Essay
As an aviation management major airport security is a concern that I have taken a huge interest in.
Making travel safer to air travelers is one of the biggest tasks that will never end as long as there is a
plane in the sky. However, there are many problems that come about when traveling because
passengers feel as if they are being harassed, which doesn t set a good look for the Transportation
Security Administration. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) consist of 50,000 security
officers, inspectors, directors, air marshals and managers who protect the nation s transportation
systems so you and your family can travel safely. They look for bombs at checkpoints in airports, they
inspect rail cars, they patrol subways with our ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Finally, the DHS found that the TSA had implemented procedures to investigate and resolve passenger
complaints regarding the screening process.
The TSA maintains a screening Performance Management Information System (PMIS) where
recorded complaints are logged. Operations research analysis teams and federal security directors
review complaints logged in the database to track trends and identify areas of concern and take
appropriate actions, including possible disciplinary actions, to resolve specific issues. Complaints
involving allegations of discrimination based on color, race, gender, religion, or national or ethnic
origin are forwarded to the TSA s Office of Civil Rights for further investigation. Despite considerable
concern raised by some regarding inappropriate behavior during pat down screening procedures, the
DHS found no problems with the technique.
Nonetheless, privacy groups, such as the American Civil Liberties Union (ALCU), continue to express
concern over potential intrusion on individual rights and alleged cases of sexual harassment and abuse
of passengers, particularly female passengers, by TSA screeners. These concerns, however, raise a
significant challenge for the TSA: to maintain high levels of security, which require resolving all
alarms and screening in detail those passengers ascertained to pose an elevated security risk, while
maintaining the privacy rights and dignity of passengers identified for these secondary

Social Class And Learning
Furthermore, social class influences an individual s learning. Social class refers to a hierarchical
stratification or layering of people in social groups, communities, and societies, representing prestige,
power, influence, and income (Cushner, McClelland, and Safford 442). It plays a critical role in
education and closely related to educational attainment. Children living in a family with upper middle
class can access to better education, and thus, are more likely to achieve higher educational status.
However, those from disadvantaged areas are less likely to have better education achievement because
of poverty. Because Shirley was born in a wealthy family, she could always receive the elite education
from elementary school to university.

Observation Reflection
A few weeks ago our group sat in the Starbucks located on campus for 20 minutes observing people
who sat, stood and walked around. In this time we had four different sets of eyes looking around and
taking notes. The following is a summary of our observations to answer the required questions. A
difficulty we may have encountered if we would have stayed in the same location longer is people
would have noticed. People were extremely busy, but as time went by one girl did notice there was
something odd about our table and began to stare. That would have made it awkward and caused a
distraction of what our goal if more people noticed us. Another difficulty would be our notes would
have been repetitive and it would have been hard focusing. As observers, constantly seeing the same
thing, it would just be too much for us.
During the observation period we conducted as a group, we felt that it would be very easy since we
naturally observe people in our free time. Though through time we felt very creepy and somewhat
stupid just sitting around staring at people and writing notes. Nevertheless, an overall feeling was that
it was interesting sitting. We observed our fellow classmates, Rutgers students and faculty staff who
passed by.
Overall, in the quality and accuracy of our field notes and conclusions, we would be very confident
since we had four different perspectives observing the same location, front, back and sides of the
room. All of us coming up with both similarities in our

Ozone Depletion Essay
Ozone Depletion
In this world of rapid change, it s extremely difficult for a company to stay ahead of the game even
using all the resources available to them. So, it s difficult to imagine the problems they would run into
when a group of environmentalists decide to boycott a substance which is the foundation of their
company. These chemicals, although very useful, cause consequences that need to be dealt with now
in order to prevent further damage.
The chemicals in question are numerous, but the two gaining the most attention are chloroflurocarbons
(CFC s) and carbon tetrachloride. CFC s have a wide range of uses, but are popularly used in aerosol
propellants and air ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Most importantly it affects quot;microscopic photoplankton quot; which rest at the bottom of the food
chain, placing us in extreme danger (Goldfarb 288). Henry Lee, leading researcher on ozone depletion
for the
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), says that UV rays will only have a slight effect on oceans,
though. He says the problem lies on the fact that 70 percent of the Earth s surface is covered with
water, making it a widespread problem.
In addition to that, humans exposed to excess UV rays over a period of time are likely to develop
some form of cancer (Singer and Crandall npg). The EPA released a report that stated if CFC s weren t
controlled, in the future there will be approximately quot;40 million additional cases of non melanoma
skin cancer found and 800,000 additional skin cancer deaths quot; (Singer and Crandall npg).
Now that scientists know what these and other quot;culprits quot; do, they re trying to find solutions to
this world wide problem. When they found these chemicals to be harmful, environmentalists didn t
hesitate in taking action.
They placed a boycott on the use of aerosol spray cans. The U.S. and Canada responded by banning
quot;CFC powered spray cans, quot; and that, along with Europe agreeing to cut back by 35 percent,
caused the rate of damage to fall drastically (Singer and Crandall npg). Therefore, manufacturers have
to stop using these. The only other

  • 2. The Effects Of Controlled Burns On Rangelands The Effects of Controlled Burns on Rangelands Shane J. Methvin BYU Idaho Abstract There are many different techniques or methods used to manage rangelands. These methods have been implemented to improve the health of a rangeland. One such technique that has been found to be beneficial is controlled burning. Controlled burning can help improve rangelands for both livestock and wildlife if managed properly. This is done by burning an area which kills undesirable woody species, giving desirable, native grass species a chance to bounce back, as they can be choked out by these competing woody species. Controlled burning can also have negative effects as well if managed improperly. If controlled burns are managed properly, the overall ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Such was the case in the study conducted by a Texas AgriLife Research Range ecologist (Ledbetter, 2010). The focus of this study was observing the effects of summer patch fires on the reduction of unwanted woody plants and prickly pear cacti. In this study, patches were burned rather than burning pastures as a whole to allow livestock to continue to graze in other areas simultaneously with the controlled burns. These burns took place in the summer rather than the winter because, prescribed fire in the summer is more effective in controlling unwanted woody plants and prickly pear cactus than winter fires because they burn hotter (Ledbetter, 2010). The results indicated that if controlled burning and rotational grazing are carefully managed, success in reducing the number of unwanted plants can be achieved (Ledbetter, 2010). Sometimes the public s opinion about burning rangelands and regulations can influence the ability of landowners and range managers to perform controlled burns. Many of the grasslands and areas managers wish to burn have adapted to occasional fires and native grasses can recover quite well, while unwanted woody species are reduced. Suppression of controlled burns, many times because of the public s opinion, can lead to an increase in these woody species, competing for nutrients with native grasses. If controlled burns continue to be suppressed by the public and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Taking a Look at Tessellations Most people recognize the artistry of walls in ancient palaces, of mosaic pictures, and even of honeycombs. Likewise, the artistry and intricacies of M.C. Escher s drawings astound most people. When we look at these objects and artwork we recognize the shapes within them; we see squares, hexagons and other shapes without giving them much thought. We might not even know that these patterns of shapes have a name, and we certainly do not think of mathematics when we see them. But, in fact, these patterns or tessellations are part of the field of geometry. When a space is covered with a pattern of flat shapes with no overlaps or gaps it is known as a tessellation or a tilling. Tessellations have been around for many centuries and in many different cultures and are still prevalent today. In Latin the word tesserae means small stone cube they were used to make up tessellata the mosaic pictures forming floors and tiling in Roman buildings. Making a repeating pattern with a regular polygon creates regular tessellations. Triangles, squares and hexagons are the only three shapes that can make a regular tessellation. In order for a tessellation to be regular the pattern is identical at each vertex. A tessellation created with two or more regular polygons is known as a semi regular tessellation. Just like in a regular tessellation in a semi regular tessellation the pattern at each vertex is the same. The third type of tessellation is a demi regular tessellation however ... • 4. The Built Environment At The Gardens Of Versailles A review of the built environment at the Gardens of Versailles provides a rich perspective into the political culture during the Age of Enlightenment as one defined by the absolute rule of the monarch. Gardens at Versailles were first built by Louis XIII; however, it was during the reign of Louis XIV that the gardens were extensively expanded and adorned into the spectacle Versailles is known for today. Perhaps catalyzed by a hurt ego after the construction of Fouquet s grand Vaux le Vicomte which was suspected to have been built using embezzled crown funds1, in 1661 Louis XIV began his epic project of the gardens designed almost entirely as an expression of his absolute power. Andres Le Nôtre, Versailles leading landscape architect, believed in the basic conception that landscape should be more impressive than the buildings it comprehends2. With over 800 hectares of gardens, the size of Versailles alone is quite daunting. Using forced perspective, Le Nôtre, further extended the site in the mind s eye creating a scale incomparable to the surrounding villages3. No doubt those who visited the gardens were filled with awe, perhaps even fear. Versailles provided an almost urban environment, housing France s aristocracy. Though the nobility was relatively pampered, there was no question that the king was in charge. Elaborate terracing, for example, gave the gardens hierarchical structure symbolizing feudal society, purposefully reinforcing the nobility s servility by literally ... If you are in the crowd you will most likely hear kids running up and down the bleachers when they are either going to the bathroom, or they are trying to find something to do. When the wrestlers lose their match then they get mad and take off their headgear as fast as they can and go to the sides. When they throw their gear you can either hear it hit a chair or the floor and it will make a loud noise. When the wrestlers lose most people stay quiet because they know that if you cheer then it can make the person that lost feel worse about losing. Sports gambling and Internet poker are very popular among American gamblers in every state, but both remain almost entirely illegal in the U.S. There are some other gambling black markets, but sports gambling and online poker are the two primary underground markets of truly significant size. Millions of Americans skirt the law by gambling with companies based in different countries where that activity is legal. This is a lucrative market as approximately $30 billion was gambled by Americans with foreign Internet gambling sites from 2003 to 2010. Consequently, the Department of Justice and the FBI have shut down several high profile offshore gambling companies. Nonetheless, this type of activity remains readily available for American consumers as there are 85 countries with sanctioned Internet gambling. It s necessary to understand the history behind these failed policies. The Federal Wire Act of 1961 has been the primary federal statute for prosecuting illegal sports gambling and decades later it has remained as the legal basis behind shutting down several offshore gambling operations. To teenage boy, love is what he should feel for his girlfriend of the moment, only because she says she loves him. But as we get older and wiser, love becomes more and more confusing. Along with poets and philosophers, people have been trying to answer that age old question for centuries: What is love? One definition of love in The Merriam Webster dictionary is attraction based on sexual desire (439). Some people believe that love and sex are one in the same. The speaker in Sharon Olds Sex without Love asks, How do they do it, the ones who make love / without love? (1 2). Love is deeper and more meaningful than just physical or sexual attraction. Love is a feeling an emotion. Love is also defined in the dictionary as strong affection, warm attachment, and unselfish loyal and benevolent concern for others (439). All of these definitions are completely correct, but the dictionary does not explain how it feels to love someone. The reason that an explanation for this feeling is not found in the dictionary may be because love is so different for each individual person. In my experience, strong affection does not even begin to cover the sensation and emotions a person feels when he or she is in love. Love is compared to the extraordinary sun / splashing its light / into astonished trees in Denise Levertov s Love Poem (2 4). Like the sun, love is great and bright and fills a person with extreme joy. Love is greater than anything else a person could ever experience. • 13. Themes In The Chrysanthemums In the story The Chrysanthemums by John Steinbeck, a woman name Elisa and her husband live in a valley closed off from the people and places around them. Elisa is a very lonely and confided person, who is unsure of her green thumb abilities. She has a garden full of Chrysanthemums which to most green thumbs are some of the hardest to care for, but Elisa dose it effortlessly. The story sets a scene of a dark and closed off area in which they live. The first paragraph says The high grey flannel fog of winter closed off the Salinas Valley from the sky and from all the rest of the world. On every side, it sat like a lid on the mountains and made of the great valley a closed pot (Steinbeck 1). This hints at us how where they live might affect the confidence of Elisa. Living in an area closed off from the world around you will keep you from growing and building as a person. Elisa already is unsure of herself. Elisa s appearance shows how she never is worried about her looking her best, Her figure looked blocked and heavy in her gardening costume, a man s black hat pulled low down over her eyes, clodhopper shoes, a figured print dress almost completely covered by a big corduroy apron with four big pockets to hold the snips (Steinbeck 1). Elisa being in such a closed off environment dose not add to her social interaction. The house they live in is a farmhouse with lots of land separating one another from their neighbors. This means the contact Elisa has is just of her husband on a day to day basis. Her husband, Henry, believes she is a great green thumb. He leans over the fence to tell Elisa You got a strong new crop coming (Steinbeck 2). He goes out without her to the city to watch fights, but only jokingly asks her to come. Henry loves his wife, but when she talks about expanding her garden he never really says much back to her. For example, Elisa begins to talk about how she thinks maybe growing her garden would be a good idea and he doesn t encourage her, he just skips to talking about date night. He says, And I thought, he continued, I thought how it s Saturday afternoon, and we might go into Salinas for dinner at a restaurant, and then to a picture show to celebrate, you see (Steinbeck 3). ... Current initiatives that Tuality has in the works for 2015 is to improve diversity of its workforce and, therefore, improve its service to the minority population in the area. The Importance Of Colors In Gilead Imagery, particularly when describing beautiful colors before Gilead and contrasting them with the dull colors described in Gilead reveal how drastically life has changed. Offred mentions that in the past when she took her daughter to get ice cream, everything was colored so delicately, pale orange, pale green, pale pink and that her daughter, dressed in similar ice cream pastels would choose her treat by the color (Atwood 165). In life before Gilead, colors were vivid and cheerful, something to make objects more enjoyable to look at. People could wear whatever color they please, and colors had no additional meaning to them other than to show people had freedom to make their own decisions. However, in Gilead, color imagery shows the lack of decision and the rigid societal structure the government imposes. Each group has their own colors even in minor aspects of life, such as with umbrellas categorized as black, for the Commander, blue, for the Commander s Wife, and the one assigned to [Offred], which is red (Atwood 9). Each color labels members of the society as part of a certain category and defines their roles without further consideration. All future cash flows are estimated and discounted to give their present values (PVs) the sum of all future cash flows, both incoming and outgoing, is the net present value (NPV), which is taken as the value or price of the cash flows in question. Using DCF analysis to compute the NPV takes as input cash flows and a discount rate and gives as output a price; the opposite process taking cash flows and a price and inferring a discount rate, is called the yield. Using the DPV formula above (FV=$150,000, i=0.05, n=3), that means that the value of $150,000 received in three years actually has a present value of $129,576 (rounded off). In other words we would need to invest $129,576 in a T Bond now to get $150,000 in 3 years almost risk free. This is a quantitative way of showing that money in the future is not as valuable as money in the present ($150,000 in 3 years isn t worth the same as $150,000 now; it is worth $129,576 now). Subtracting the purchase price of the house ($100,000) from the present value results in the net present value of the whole transaction, which would be $29,576 or a little more than 29% of the purchase price. Another way of looking at the deal as the excess return achieved (over the risk free rate) is (14.5% 5.0%)/(100%+5%) or approximately 9.0% (still very respectable). But what about risk? We assume that the $150,000 is John s best estimate of the sale price that he will be able to achieve in 3 years time (after deducting all expenses, of course). There is of course a lot of uncertainty about house prices, and the outcome may end up higher or lower than this estimate. The Theory Of Psychology And Personality Development Personality Report There are many theorists that have made psychology incredible, and have paved the way for what we believe psychology to consist of today. Some important theorists that I believe have made a huge contribution are Sigmund Freud, Karen Horney, and Dollard and Miller. These theorists have all had their own view on personality development, and I believe that these ideas have shaped the way in which we view psychology today. The many interpretations of conflict, psychotherapy, and cultural and biological aspects of personality have shaped their views and differences as well. Sigmund Freud, known as the father of psychology, developed some of the first theories of modern psychology. One of his well known theories is the structural model of the psyche. According to Freud, most of what drives individuals is buried in the unconscious mind. There are three main forces that drive humans, which include the id, the ego, and the super ego. The id is the summation of basic personal needs and desires. It is completely self centered, and has no care for sensibility or reality. It strives for what it wants, when it wants it with no other considerations. The second part of the personality is the ego. The ego is the realization of reality. It is the ego s job to, in a sense, counteract the selfishness and impractically if the id. The third part, the super ego, is morals and acquired beliefs of right and wrong. Challenging yourself, expanding your perspective, and learning about new cultures are just some of the benefits. If I could travel anywhere in the world where would I go? Somewhere like the beach or the mountains? The one place I would choose to visit is the town of Nazca. This town is specifically known for The Nazca Lines. The Nazca lines are large geoglyphs created by removing large amounts of rock and dirt, located in the Peruvian Desert within southern Peru. These lines are believed to be created by the Nazca tribe somewhere between 500 BC and 500 AD. the lines were discovered by Peruvian archaeologist Toribio Mejia Xesspe in 1927. Researchers actually found that individual factors like age, income level, education, gender, etc. had a smaller than expected impact on optimism, and that national factors like GDP and life expectancy didn t really have an impact on optimism at all. So really no matter how harsh the circumstances, we all can be positive. Findings from a study conducted a few years ago by neuroscientist Elizabeth Phelps suggest that directing our thoughts of the future toward the positive is a result of our frontal cortex communicating with subcortical regions deep in our brain. The frontal cortex, a large area behind the forehead, is the most recently evolved part of the brain. It is larger in humans than in other primates and is critical for many complex human functions such as language and goal setting. We just have to use that frontal cortex and decide to choose the positive route. So now we know how beneficial it is for us to use that daily optimistic thinking. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Further experiments would then need to be performed to gain a complete understanding of the benefits and consequences of combusting certain fuels. Background Information The combustion of the hydrocarbons and organic molecules found in fuels is a chemical reaction that primarily involves the oxidation of carbon and hydrogen in various compounds to release heat and produce water and carbon dioxide. When the environment lacks sufficient oxygen, rendering oxygen as the limiting reagent in the reaction, incomplete combustion would occur. This involves the production of other chemicals such as carbon monoxide and solid carbon in addition to water and carbon dioxide. The general chemical equations for the incomplete and complete combustion of hydrocarbons are as follows: Complete: CxHy + O2(g) → H2O(l) + CO2(g) Incomplete: CxHy + O2(g) → H2O(l) + CO2(g) + CO(g) + C(s) Of course, the composition of each fuel varies, yet the main organic molecule they contain can be used to formulate the basic chemical reaction that is undergone when each substance is combusted. In the case with fondue fuel, methanol is the main substance that is responsible for combustion and can be represented with the following equation (NIST 2015): 2 CH3OH(l) + 3 O2(g) → 2 CO2(g) + 4 H2O(l),where is 725.7 kJ/mol Fondue fuel is ... • 39. The Importance Of Creon In Shakespeare By Sophocles ... In Antigone, it is generally believed that the gods possess limitless power and are able to control the fate of every mortal, no matter how powerful. However, there are also people who believe that they can change their fate, only if they have enough power. Creon, the most powerful mortal in the play, is one of those people. Due to the unmatched amount of power he has over Thebes, Creon feels he is able to challenge the gods and the fate given to him. After attempting to do so, he finds himself stuck with a tragic fate, resulting in the loss of everything dear to him, including his power. Sophocles uses Creon as a way to show that everyone has a physical limit, but not a mental limit. When our thoughts and beliefs cause us to act beyond that physical limit, fate will always be there to provide the acceptable consequences. The play introduces Creon as a character whose power enables him to do as he pleases. After becoming the king of Thebes, he immediately recognizes his power. Shortly after being introduced into the play, Creon passes a proclamation stating, Never at my hand will the traitor be honored above the patriot. (Lines 232 233). Due to his personal beliefs towards the sons of Oedipus, Creon passes a law forbidding the burial of Polynices, the brother who fought against Thebes during war. • 41. Ancient Empires Political Power Analysis Philanthropist Walter Annenberg once said, The greatest power is not money power, but political power. This can be seen in how ancient empires rose and stayed in power. Before 600 C.E. ancient empires exerted political power through a variety of methods, including military importance, creating legal systems, and using punishments. Ancient empires used military importance, legal systems, and punishments to exert political power. The use of military importance can be seen in documents 1, and 2. Both of these documents speak of the pride taken in the achievements of their military and the goods that have been procured because of their conquest. An example from document 1 is the statement, Next to prowess in arms, it is regarded as the greatest proof of manly excellence to be the father of many sons... and in document 2 it says, Because of the greatness of our city the fruits of the whole earth flow in upon us; so that we enjoy the goods of other countries as freely as of our own . The use of legal systems can be seen in documents 2, 3, 4, and 5. All these documents express laws in place to ensure equality, obedience, and moral values. Some examples can be seen in document 2, The law secures equal justice to all alike in their private disputes... and document 3, Strict laws are used by rulers to prevent disobedience and expel the selfish... • 43. Advertising Strategies Essay Advertising Strategies When an advertiser places one of their advertisements into a newspaper, they want their advertisement to appeal to the readers of that particular magazine. They could have the exact same message, but considering their audience, they could make it more effective if they use a different strategy to market their product. This is very common for advertising strategies to change when the content of the magazine changes. You can relate the way that the magazine producers choose their ads by when Steve Craig says that program producers and schedulers must consider the target audience needs of their clients (162). The types of advertisements are driven by the content of the magazine. Sports Illustrated provides a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At the top of that half of the page, the words The longer you wait are there. On the other side of the advertisement, there is a professional fisherman standing in a professional fishing boat which is sponsored by Evan Williams. In order for the professional fisherman to look better, that half of the ad is printed in color to give it a more lively feeling. At the bottom of the picture, the words the better it gets. are there creating a suggestion to the reader that if you have the patience, things will always become better. To tie the picture back into a promotional opportunity for Evan Williams, there is a picture of a bottle of Evan Williams whiskey in between the two pictures claiming that it is Extra Aged . In the bottom right hand corner of the advertisement, it also says Evan Williams. Aged longer to taste smoother. The ad is trying to sell the fact that because the fisherman waited a long time, he turned out to become a professional, and since the whiskey they make was aged, it also became better, just like the fisherman. The reason that they chose to connect the fisherman to the quality of their whiskey was because they anticipated a lot of males that read Sports Illustrated to be sports minded and be just like that average Joe fisherman. • 44. The World Is Flat by Thomas Friedman The book, The World is Flat, by Thomas Friedman draws attention to some very good points concerning globalization and the world economy today. Friedman emphasizes the status of America today in relation to the other countries of the world. As I looked at the things in which he warned about or highlighted, I realized the importance of this issue. He talks about a few aspects in which need to be kept competitive in order for America to retain their current standing in the world market. First of all, Friedman talks about the different levels of globalization. There are 3 different time periods in which the society has differed and changed, bringing us to where we are today. Globalization 1.0, which took place from 1492 to 1800, was the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is the area in which I think Friedman s theory is slightly flawed. He seems to say that there was almost no sort of international communication, relation, or business before the discovery of the new world. Following globalization 1.0 came 2.0. This was the time from 1800 to 2000. There were many advances in this period that drastically changed the world in which we live today. Communication, transportation, and growing trade markets influenced and brought us to multinational companies, which greatly shrunk the world down to yet another smaller size. Today, we are in the globalization 3.0 phase, in which communication (mostly through the Internet) and transportation are at a level in which distance hardly poses any problem at all. Another very large issue in this era is the concept of outsourcing. This is the idea that if an item can be produced more cheaply outside of the company/region, it will be. The market will go to the cheapest source of production. Many of the countries or cultures that have been transformed by the flattening of the world have been affected because of their upper hand through education. We as Americans have gotten used to being elite over the years due to our high economic standing and educational excellence, but in recent years, the educational agenda has increased in other countries, while America s education has seemed to decline. Australia Soft Drink Market Cultural Background The FSANZ phone survey of adolescents and young adults in Australia found that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders were more likely to consume sugar sweetened soft drinks compared to other Australians (72 per cent versus 50 per cent) and consumed significantly larger amounts (249 ml versus 128 ml per day) (Food Standards Australia New Zealand 2003a). The 2004 SPANS survey of children in Years 6 10 in NSW found consumption of soft drinks to be lowest among students of Asian background and highest among boys of Southern European and Middle Eastern background (Booth et al. 2006). One of the few studies examining the factors affecting soft drink consumption in adults showed that consumption of sugar sweetened soft drinks was associated with less restrained and more external eating, i.e. sensitive to external stimuli such as taste (Elfhag et al. 2007). The study, conducted among 3265 adults in Sweden showed that, in contrast, diet soft drinks were consumed by persons with a higher body mass index (BMI) (possibly in an attempt to reduce their weight), more restrained eating and more emotional eating. Parents as Models A study in Australia showed that the influence of mothers, either as models of eating behaviours or as the providers of food, is pervasive (Campbell et al. 2007). Parental soft drink consumption was positively associated with younger children s intake in two studies (Grimm et al. 2004; Vereecken et al. 2004). Mother s consumption was found to be an independent predictor for regular soft drink consumption among children in Belgium (Vereecken et al. 2004). In the US, children aged 8 13 years whose parents regularly drank soft drinks were nearly three times more likely to consume soft drinks five or more times per week compared with those whose parents did not regularly drink soft drinks (Grimm et al. 2004). A higher frequency of preparing food was found to be related to lower intakes of carbonated beverages among female adolescents in the US (Larson ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Making travel safer to air travelers is one of the biggest tasks that will never end as long as there is a plane in the sky. However, there are many problems that come about when traveling because passengers feel as if they are being harassed, which doesn t set a good look for the Transportation Security Administration. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) consist of 50,000 security officers, inspectors, directors, air marshals and managers who protect the nation s transportation systems so you and your family can travel safely. Finally, the DHS found that the TSA had implemented procedures to investigate and resolve passenger complaints regarding the screening process. The TSA maintains a screening Performance Management Information System (PMIS) where recorded complaints are logged. Operations research analysis teams and federal security directors review complaints logged in the database to track trends and identify areas of concern and take appropriate actions, including possible disciplinary actions, to resolve specific issues. Complaints involving allegations of discrimination based on color, race, gender, religion, or national or ethnic origin are forwarded to the TSA s Office of Civil Rights for further investigation. Despite considerable concern raised by some regarding inappropriate behavior during pat down screening procedures, the DHS found no problems with the technique. Nonetheless, privacy groups, such as the American Civil Liberties Union (ALCU), continue to express concern over potential intrusion on individual rights and alleged cases of sexual harassment and abuse of passengers, particularly female passengers, by TSA screeners. These concerns, however, raise a significant challenge for the TSA: to maintain high levels of security, which require resolving all alarms and screening in detail those passengers ascertained to pose an elevated security risk, while maintaining the privacy rights and dignity of passengers identified for these secondary ... Social class refers to a hierarchical stratification or layering of people in social groups, communities, and societies, representing prestige, power, influence, and income (Cushner, McClelland, and Safford 442). It plays a critical role in education and closely related to educational attainment. Children living in a family with upper middle class can access to better education, and thus, are more likely to achieve higher educational status. • 48. Observation Reflection A few weeks ago our group sat in the Starbucks located on campus for 20 minutes observing people who sat, stood and walked around. In this time we had four different sets of eyes looking around and taking notes. The following is a summary of our observations to answer the required questions. A difficulty we may have encountered if we would have stayed in the same location longer is people would have noticed. People were extremely busy, but as time went by one girl did notice there was something odd about our table and began to stare. That would have made it awkward and caused a distraction of what our goal if more people noticed us. Another difficulty would be our notes would have been repetitive and it would have been hard focusing. As observers, constantly seeing the same thing, it would just be too much for us. During the observation period we conducted as a group, we felt that it would be very easy since we naturally observe people in our free time. Though through time we felt very creepy and somewhat stupid just sitting around staring at people and writing notes. Nevertheless, an overall feeling was that it was interesting sitting. We observed our fellow classmates, Rutgers students and faculty staff who passed by. Overall, in the quality and accuracy of our field notes and conclusions, we would be very confident since we had four different perspectives observing the same location, front, back and sides of the room. So, it s difficult to imagine the problems they would run into when a group of environmentalists decide to boycott a substance which is the foundation of their company. These chemicals, although very useful, cause consequences that need to be dealt with now in order to prevent further damage. Most importantly it affects quot;microscopic photoplankton quot; which rest at the bottom of the food chain, placing us in extreme danger (Goldfarb 288). Henry Lee, leading researcher on ozone depletion for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), says that UV rays will only have a slight effect on oceans, though. He says the problem lies on the fact that 70 percent of the Earth s surface is covered with water, making it a widespread problem. In addition to that, humans exposed to excess UV rays over a period of time are likely to develop some form of cancer (Singer and Crandall npg). The EPA released a report that stated if CFC s weren t controlled, in the future there will be approximately quot;40 million additional cases of non melanoma skin cancer found and 800,000 additional skin cancer deaths quot; (Singer and Crandall npg). Now that scientists know what these and other quot;culprits quot; do, they re trying to find solutions to this world wide problem. When they found these chemicals to be harmful, environmentalists didn t hesitate in taking action. They placed a boycott on the use of aerosol spray cans. The U.S. and Canada responded by banning quot;CFC powered spray cans, quot; and that, along with Europe agreeing to cut back by 35 percent, caused the rate of damage to fall drastically (Singer and Crandall npg). Therefore, manufacturers have to stop using these. The only other ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
