Walt Whitman, An Enemy Or A Model For Ezra Pound

Walt Whitman , an enemy or a model for Ezra Pound?
In this essay , I want to demonstrate if Walt Whitman is seen as an enemy or as a model by Ezra
Pound. Even if the poem is ambiguous at first, during its we see that Walt Whitman is seen as a model,
as a spiritual father endowed with artistic creed which will be taken by his child.
Poem can be divided into 2 parts, the first part corresponds to childhood and refusal to accept the style
of Whitman (line 1 2) and the second part corresponds to maturity , where Pound accepts his style (
the wood) that he carves to become better, more understandable by his era. (line 3 9)
Pound saw Walt Whitman gradually , he passed from considered him an enemy, a bad person ( i have
detested you long enough ) , to a stubborn father ( pig headed father) , a spiritual one who wants what
it is good for his child ,a genius, to a fatherland and also a forebear whose creation Pound will
continue. But according to ,,The Cambridge Companion to Walt Whitman : Whitman delineates a
composite figure: a father fashioned as much to resist as to obey, an older brother sharing secrets, a
lover making cryptic signs by which all comrades of manly love might recognize and greet each other,
a priestly poet ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nevertheless, he saw that it was a pill that had to be taken if he was to remain an American poet, true
to the vital sap and fibre as well as the crudity of America. (Beach,p69) Following this quote , we
deduce the idea that even if that period was sober, is still part of Ezra Pounds past . So , the poet
must appreciate this because it is an American poet and also must respect the work and sacrifice of

Is Bromden Dehumanize In One Flew Over The Cuckoo s Nest
In Kesey s novel, One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest, the narrator, Bromden, has a very vivid and
disturbing dream of the hospital as a slaughterhouse where the staff hang old Blastic on a meat hook
and cut him open. A bit of the horrifying dream is shown when Bromden describes, The worker takes
the scalpel and slices up the front of old Blastic with a clean swing and the old man stops thrashing
around. I expect to be sick, but there s no blood...just a shower of rush and ashes... (Kesey 88).
Symbolism of machinery is shown throughout the gruesome dream and specifically ash and rust pours
out of old Blastic. The symbolism shown is the hospital as place that dehumanizes the patients and
turns them into mechanical patients, taking away their uniqueness ... Show more content on

In Kesey s novel, One Flew Over the Cuckoos s Nest, McMurphy is the protagonist. Kesey throughout
the book has depicted McMurphy of trying to pull the patients out of the fog. Bromden s perception of
McMurphy s attempts to drag them out of the fog is showed when he states, There s no sense in it, any
fool can see; I wouldn t do it on my own (Kesey 142). This takes place when McMurphy is trying to
get the chronics to vote for the time of watching TV to be changed. Although this is before Bromden
realizes he voted because of his own free will, Bromden sees McMurphy s attempts to pull them out of
the fog as troubling, as it will increase tensions between the patients and Big Nurse. McMurphy
perceives his attempts to pull the other patients out of the fog as vital, this is show when he is trying to
get the chronics to vote for the time change to watch TV and he says, One of you guys for cryin out
loud! This is where you get the edge, don t you see that? We have to do this... (Kesey 142). As the
only one in the hospital that is different and still actually laughs, Mc Murphy still has his individuality
and sees the control that the Big Nurse is keeping over the patients. In recognizing this and the
dehumanization that the other patients have gone through, McMurphy constantly tries to pull the
patients out of the fog, seeing that Big Nurse will have no power if they all retaliate against her. At the
end of part one, McMurphy is shown with success of pulling the

Comparing Knowledge in Descartes’ Meditations on First...
Comparing Knowledge in Descartes Meditations on First Philosophy and Hume s An Enquiry
Concerning Human Understanding,
Rationalists would claim that knowledge comes from reason or ideas, while empiricists would answer
that knowledge is derived from the senses or impressions. The difference between these two
philosophical schools of thought, with respect to the distinction between ideas and impressions, can be
examined in order to determine how these schools determine the source of knowledge. The
distinguishing factor that determines the perspective on the foundation of knowledge is the concept of
the divine.
Descartes is a prime example of a rationalist. Descartes begins his Meditations on First ... Show more

Once the certainty of Res Cogitans is developed, clear and distinct perceptions are replaced with clear
and distinct ideas. It is these ideas from which Descartes derive knowledge, including the existence of
Res Extensa (corporeal things). Therefore, Descartes, a rationalist, derives his knowledge from ideas
and reason, all of which stem from an instance of natural light.
The empiricists, however, do not believe in natural light and therefore do not hold knowledge to be
derived from these innate ideas. David Hume is one of these empiricists. Hume was a scientist and an
atheist; his occupation and beliefs disallowed him from holding innate ideas to be a valid basis for
knowledge. In An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding, Hume points out a hierarchy that exists
among ideas and impressions: the most lively thought is still inferior to the most lively impression
(Hume: 10). Hume also establishes that for all of his ideas he can trace them back to impressions,
those for things which he has not had impressions of he cannot have an idea. What never was seen, or
heard of, may yet be conceived: (Hume: 11) A blind man can form no notion of colours; a deaf man of
sounds (Hume: 12).
From these impressions and ideas stem two kinds of knowledge: relations of ideas and matters of fact.
Relation of ideas are a priori and do not need to be

The Pros And Cons Of Open Carry
The open presence of guns in public life can quickly escalate everyday conflicts into deadly
altercations. It has been one cause of tragic, irreversible damage to innocent lives of citizens through
the long US history. Despite the evidence that openly carrying firearms in public spaces endangers
public safety, most states lack laws to limit open carry and some have even taken steps to weaken
regulation regarding the practice. Historically, most states either prohibited or strongly regulated the
carrying of firearms in public spaces. Over the past three decades, however, state laws have changed
dramatically. In that time, many states have significantly weakened their laws to permit more and
more people to carry guns in public places and to reduce or eliminate local law enforcement s ability
to keep potentially dangerous people from carrying guns in public. Open carry refers to the practice of
carrying a firearm in public. It has been legal in many states since the 19th century. Proponents of
open carry claim that criminals usually conceal their weapons in contrast to the law abiding citizens
who display their sidearms. Also the regulation of guns open carry would ... Show more content on

those who oppose guns and support gun control will be more active in contacting their representative

such as mass shootings, executive orders, etc. Open carry has been legal in many states and there are
lot of proponents that have an effect to even political decisions, in the meanwhile, although they are
still minority groups, opponents of open carry also keeps increasing their numbers as if literally

Why I Decided For The Army For Three Reasons
It is dark outside and many men lay sick on the cold dirt floor of the huts. I want to return to my
family, however I must serve my country until the end. Our huts only have mud and straw for our
bedding. Space was limited in the hut, there are no windows and only one door. The huts are 16 by 14
, not enough room for the 12 men inside. Still, many of the conditions at Valley Forge are okay for
living in. The living conditions occurred to be very harsh, but they happened to be bearable. I decided
to re enlist in the army for three reasons; the army needs more soldiers, in the end there is much pride
and glory, and many leaders are helping us get through the war.
In 1773, the Boston Tea Party commenced causing most of this drama with the British. Before we
arrived at camp we had victories in Princeton and Trenton, demonstrating that we can win this war.
Then in 1776, our Declaration of Independence had started to be written. Before I left to the war, my
home was quartered or taken over by the British. I knew that I had to leave my family to help support
them. In the year 1777 our army marched into the Valley Forge camp, home for me and my fellow
men for 9 months. We ate, slept, and trained for many days. Upon our arrival at Valley Forge many
soldiers started to desert, or in other words, they were leaving without permission from General
Washington. The war conditions were getting worse and I knew that I had a duty to help the army.
The first reason I will re enlist in

Self Creation In The Great Gatsby
In this life, you encounter friends who leave footprints on your path. The actions they take and the
words they use leave fragments of their impact on you. Other people s impressions are eluded along
your journey. You may not forget, but you do not cherish the essence of their time. In the book, The
Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald ties two concepts together, side by side. As he throws the main
character into a strikingly new environment, Nick Carraway seizes the opportunity to make true
friendships. At the same time, he is swayed and mixed into a crowd of shallow encounters with
untrustworthy people. To dive into this theme, Nick Carraway blatantly expresses his realization
regarding Jordan Baker. The bored haughty face that she turned ... Show more content on

Her intentions seem to be self motivated. She was incurably dishonest. (Fitzgerald 58) Carraway
proceeds to drop this idea by saying, It made no difference to me. Dishonesty in a woman is a thing
you never blame deeply I was casually sorry, and then I forgot. (Fitzgerald 58) In spite of thinking so
fondly of his interactions with Gatsby, Baker does not leave a huge impact on Carraway. Other than
false infatuation, she proves nothing more to him than another new face. A new face that he quite
obviously does not trust or seem to think of as mysteriously intricate, he drops the thought of Baker.
When it comes time for him to come to his senses and break up with her, she reveals something about
herself that confuses Carraway. I wanted to leave things in order and not just trust that obliging
indifferent sea to sweep my refuse away. (Fitzgerald 177) When Carraway states that he would like to
get his priorities straight, he shows the difference between him and the others around him. His true
colors are honest. He tries to put his real emotions on display with the means of keeping his situation
under control. This is a real effort to avoid the illusion of a meaningless relationship. His strides differ
from that of his cousin Daisy and her husband Tom. They were careless people, Tom and Daisy they
smashed up things and creatures and then retreated into their money or

Letter to Birmingham Jail
The Letter from Birmingham Jail or Letter from Birmingham City Jail, is an open letter written on
April 16, 1963, by Martin Luther King, Jr. King wrote the letter from the city jail in Birmingham,
Alabama, where he was confined after being arrested for his part in the Birmingham campaign, a
planned non violent protest conducted by the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights and
King s Southern Christian Leadership Conference against racial segregation by Birmingham s city
government and downtown retailers.

Frankly, I have yet to engage in a direct action campaign that was well timed in view of those who
have not suffered unduly from the disease of segregation. For years now I have heard the word wait! It
rings in the ear of every Negro with piercing familiarity. This Wait has almost always meant Never.
We must come to see, with one of our distinguished jurists, that justice too long delayed is justice
denied.
We have waited for more than 340 years for our constitutional and God given rights. The nations of
Asia and Africa are moving with jetlike speed toward gaining political independence, but we still

those who have never felt the stinging darts of segregation to say, Wait. But when you have seen
vicious mobs lynch your mothers and fathers at will and drown your sisters and brothers at whim;
when you have seen hate filled policemen curse, kick and even kill your black brothers and sisters;
when you see the vast majority of your twenty million Negro brothers smothering in an airtight cage
of poverty in the midst of an affluent society; when you suddenly find your tongue twisted and your
speech stammering as you seek to explain to your six year old daughter why she can t go to the public

“the Evacuation of Children in World War Two Was a Great...
The evacuation of children in World War Two was a great success. How far do the sources you have
used support this interpretation of evacuation in World War Two? (25 marks)
Before the War in September 1939, the government understood the risk of air raids and the danger
they bring upon major cities in England. Plans for evacuation started as early as 15 years before in
1924; the Air Raid Precaution Committee (ARPC) identified London as the main target, with children
as the biggest concern. The government identified, after the ARPC produced a report on the potential
disasters of air raid attacks in 1925, that maintaining civilian morale was a priority, and that the fear of
bombing would bring it down. So, to prevent low morale (and also ... Show more content on

To further justify evacuation and therefore show its success in keeping evacuees safe, source six
shows casualties in Liverpool. It shows that the death rate was generally over 100 and even in May
1941, at 1453. Again, this justifies the need to evacuate and the safety achieved through evacuation.
Finally, sources three shows the success in evacuation as the sources show effectiveness and good
organisation as a success of evacuation. This encompasses overall efficiency and pre evacuation
planning. To be able to transport the huge amount of 1million (intended 4million) to the countryside
required this efficiency and overall, sources three and source two mention the efficiency and order of
the transport (trains) and organisation in the countryside. In source three, a newspaper article from
Kent, says that the departures were efficient, reflecting that it was seen to that each child got milk and
food , and followed up with no confusion . Even source two, though showing evacuation in a negative
way, also comments that the trains ran to time and that evacuation came complete with teachers .
Having teachers is shown in sources one, three and four as well. In source one, it is shown as a teacher
with a group of children, in three there are mentioned teachers in charge and in four, the graph shows
about 103,000 teachers were evacuated. The fact that they were able to organise having teachers for
the children,

Action Is Morally Just Or Unjust
In philosophy, it is often difficult to formulate an accurate definition of whether an action is morally
just or unjust. In order to comprehensively explain the morality of a specific action, the definition
must meet the standards of both necessary and sufficient conditions. Necessary conditions are the
components of the definition that must be true of the action in order to classify the action as either
morally just or unjust. Although the necessary condition must be a component of the definition, it
alone does not solidify the morality of an action, which is why the sufficient condition must also be
addressed. The conditions that, if accurately met, guarantees that the definition achieves its purpose is
the sufficient condition. When applying these stipulations to the relativist view presented in class: If a
person S utters a statement of the form action A is morally wrong, this statement is true if and only if S
believes it is true, it is not difficult to argue that this particular view does not meet the standards of
necessary or sufficient conditions. Besides not meeting necessary and sufficient conditions, It is not
plausible that a moral claim can be true depending solely on whether or not the speaker believes it.
Human emotions are continuously changing; person S may believe action A is right today, but wrong
tomorrow, making the relativist view inconsistent. It is also impossible to say an action is universally
wrong based on the sole thought of one person, seeing as though each person has a different set of
beliefs, cultures, and customs. On the basis of necessary conditions, according to the relativist view
presented above, an action A is only moral wrong if speaker S deems it to be wrong at that particular
moment. However, the action may still be morally wrong, even if the speaker deems it otherwise,
meaning speaker S s definition is not necessarily correct. In terms of the sufficient condition, action A
may have been inflicted as an accident, although the speaker did not immediately know that.
Therefore, the speaker may have believed the action was morally wrong in the beginning, but when
speaker S obtains new knowledge pertaining to the action, they may think otherwise. It was suggested

The Negative Effects Of Pornography
With the surge of wider spread accessibility to the internet on mobile phones and laptops comes a
surge in the accessibility and viewing of pornography. Much research has been done to study how
such an increase in pornography consumption is impacting the marriage relationship. Some findings
have indicated that users incur serious negative effects, including a 25% higher divorce rate, are 101%
more likely to be unfaithful to a spouse, and were 12% less likely to describe their marriage as very
happy (Doran Price, 2014). Interestingly, various studies have also noted that the effects may be
different for men than they are for women, stating that for women who viewed pornography in ranges
between 2 3 times a month and once a day or more, their marital quality was actually higher than
those who never viewed pornography... (Perry, 2017). Considering such contradictory findings, it can
be difficult for couples to know how pornography use plays into a healthy marriage, if it does at all.
Pornography use, at the very least, has been shown to create conflict and stress between spouses if the
non using partner is more religious or has negative views surrounding pornography. Is has also been
linked with lower self esteem in women. The affects of this activity must be viewed not only through
an individual lens, but through a couple s view. Taking such a view may reveal that regardless of the
empirical outcomes of porn use, perceptions, even, can have a serious negative impact

Comparing Tokyo And Auckland s Development
Cities located globally increase significantly through the process of urbanisation, temporally and
spatially. Through urbanisation, technology is a huge advancement for cities. The main technology
advancement is transportation. I have chosen to compare Tokyo with Auckland. I will discuss Tokyo
and Auckland s development (1880 1930), outlining pressures and opportunities created by technology
advancements and how Tokyo is caused by urbanisation, comparing with Auckland.
Tokyo s population is approximately 13.35million with rapid urban growth. The land area of Tokyo is
approximately 2,187km2. Tokyo was first established in 1869. Tokyo was originally named Edo
(small fishing village) in early 1800 s. Tokyo was a part of the Musashi Province development. The
early 18th century, there were not much transportation in Edo, including planes, trains and cars. The
main transport mode was walking, boats or horseback. Any cargo transported by people, oxen/horses,
were by large carts or traditional boats. The Edo period (1603 1868), Edo did not have carriages
drawn by horses compared to horse back carriages in Auckland. The main cause of cargo were by
boats. Other transport were palanquins (equivalence to taxicabs). Palanquins were used in the city to
transport people. Road networks were then a main pressure for Tokyo as to transport freight to long
distances between cities. The Tokugawa government started to develop road infrastructure, by
connecting highways between Edo and

Before the flooding, Rodney was always on my case. Why don t I clean more? I mean, his view was,
once I quit working, the house should be immaculate. And for me, I never wanted to be a housewife
ever. So, Okay, Ill do a little cleaning. Ill do a little housewife stuff, and I ll do stuff with cooking. So
before the flood, he was like Cant we get this place a little cleaner? And ever since the flood, IM
downstairs cleaning, cleaning, cleaning, and he s been on my case: Cant you stop Cleaning. When I

Some of the families had a lot of tension and got mad at each other because they felt that the other did
not do enough to prepare for the flood. Most of the husbands and wives fought over nothing
substantial, just a lot fussing to fuss and some of the time this led to divorce. Divorce and separations
are common among people facing financial and emotional strain. Most of the women were very
emotional after the flood because they felt as if they had lost all of what they had worked so hard to
get so they turned their anger to their husbands. For example Diana, she took a lot of her frustration
out on her husband because she thought that he did not do much to help them out to prevent their
home from some of the damage before the flood. There were a lot of emotions fighting after the flood
while the men felt that they had to be the strong ones, but they still had the sadness in their hearts
because they blamed themselves because they looked at themselves as the protectors of their families.
Some of the couples turned to divorce because they felt it was the right time, they had nothing to fight
about because everything they had together was taken away by the flood while some of the couples
stayed together and fought it out. Many couples wanted to attempt to remain together because of their
children. But all after the flood

· Authorization, Access Controls
Authorization is the specification of a set of rules that specify who has which type of access to what
information. Authorization policies therefore govern the disclosure and modification of information.
Access controls are
3 procedures that are designed to control authorizations. They are responsible to limit access to stored
data to authorized users only.
· Integrity, Consistency
An integrity policy states a set of rules (i. e. semantic integrity constraints) that define the correct
states of the database during database operation and therefore can protect against malicious or
accidental modification of information. Closely related issues to integrity and consistency are
concurrency control and recovery. Concurrency control policies protect the integrity of the database in
the presence of concurrent transactions. If these transactions do not terminate normally due to system
crashes or security violations recovery techniques are used to reconstruct correct or valid database
states.
· Auditing
The requirement to keep records of all security relevant actions issued by a user is called auditing.
Resulting audit records are the basis for further reviews and examinations in order to test the adequacy
of system controls and to recommend any changes in the security policy.
In this Chapter such a broad perspective of database security is not taken.
Instead, main focus is directed towards aspects related to

Reasonable Expectation
Case law up to this point has not been determinative as to when a reasonable expectation of privacy
would exist in regards to text messages. Courts across Canada have been inconsistent in their
decisions on this issue, in some instances by directly claiming the approach taken in other jurisdictions
was blatantly incorrect. Accordingly, when making a claim to a reasonable expectation of privacy in
text messages on the recipient s phone, there are plenty of dissenting opinions to consider. However,
one thing that is well established is that in order to determine whether there is a valid claim for the
accused having a reasonable expectation of privacy the courts must apply the Edwards test and look to
the totality of the circumstances. Accordingly,

Word Accuracy And Word Frequency Essay
This study is a conceptualized replication of the Howes and Solomon (1951) experiment investigating
word accuracy and word frequency in short duration trials. It is hypothesized that words that appear
more often in printed text (easier to access in the lexicon) will be more accurately identified rather
than words that appear less commonly. A total of 83 participants in the study were presented with
words taken from the Throndike Lorge database. The words were presented for one second with a six
second rest in the middle. This was done sixty times and the results suggest a moderate strong
relationship between word accuracy and frequency. Though there are multiple factors that may have
influenced these results. Introduction Word recognition involves an individual s ability to identify
words independently without requiring related words for contextual help. A widely examined topic in
the field of cognitive psychology, it deals with understanding printed letters as a word which has been
kept in the lexicon. The word frequency effect is important in the recognition of words. It suggests
more common words in printed language are easier, faster and more accurate to distinguish than words
that appear less frequently. Outlined in their journal article, Howes and Solomon utilized Thorndike
Lorge s word count for word frequency and measured the threshold of recognition. They found
correlation coefficients of .68 to .75 between word frequency and threshold or duration.

for short term profits, despite the fatal and devastating impacts on the public.

As a company of such knowledge, skill, and practices, it was not a surprise to find that they desired to
enter the demanding market of birth control. This is especially true with the safety issues with the
birth control pill such as, blood clots. So when the Dalkon Shield came into to market for purchase it
is understandable that they were interested in an attractive alternative, and there was a vast
opportunity there. This new product was not just supposed to be a safer alternative, but it essentially
could replace the oral contraceptive all together when deemed as a safer, no side effect, type of
product.
Robins Company s anxiousness should not have misplaced the appropriate procedural testing of the
Shield, especially since this was an entirely new product line for them. First, this is a product that is
going inside of the human body, and was barely past experimental stages. Secondly, Robins has
absolutely no confirmation on the consistency of Davis and Lender s original test results and statistics.

Career Of AAutomotive Technician
Career College Research Paper I would like to be an automotive technician. Automotive technicians
inspect, maintain, and repair vehicles. I chose this this career because I have worked on cars since I
was young. Not many people want to be an automotive technician. As a result, there are more jobs
available than there are qualified technician. Most automotive technicians work in good environments.
Automotive technicians work in a well ventilated and lit repair shops or some will work in the pits at a
racetrack but, these locations can be very Tumultuous. I hope to be working in the pits. Technicians
work full time hours and overtime is common. Technicians can work in many urban areas, including
dealerships, and independent shops. Automotive technicians must first, show up a few minutes early.
In these ten minutes or so, they should unlock their toolbox, clean their work bay and tools, and check
their emails if necessary. Then they should open up the shop, and work on any unfinished projects.
Throughout the day, more work may show up. Depending on the severity of the work, it should either

A Pension Policy For The Province Of Ontario
A pension policy for the province of Ontario is being discussed, in an attempt to make it more
effective or being readily available. The existing issue is how it functions in low interests rates and
low returns in equity markets. Also, the low participation in such plans is failing the system as a
whole. It is important the government to protect workers in the private sector; as it is noted one third
of the paid workforce in 2005 was in a registered pension plan. Canada lacks when it comes to
voluntary employer sponsored pension plans and tax assisted programs, like the TFSA, who must
improve their services. The current pension plan fails to accommodate for private sector workers that
are provided with no other occupation related pension program other than the CPP. Many of the
solvency funding rules are still adopted from the Ontario Pension Benefits Act in 1966. The voluntary
participation system has failed in Canada. The government must change into a compulsory
contribution system for it to achieve the sufficient accumulation of assets. It is of concern that nearly
two thirds of private sector DB pensions plans operated either closed or frozen plans . All pension
plans should be based on individual circumstances, but currently the system lacks in regulating. The
other main issue is low household saving rates that are misbalancing pension funds reserves. Many
politicians are focusing on the type of pension scheme to use, instead of finding a way to increase the
level

Summary Of The Lottery
The Lottery 2 Mrs.Samantha walked down to the town square she was ready for the lottery. She was

crying because the lottery was sacred and Old Man Warner if he was still here would not be happy that
we have changed it. I can t believe that he had died in the winter I guess it was just too cold for his

Sherlock Holmes Vs Duin Research Paper
Sherlock Holmes and Dupin are both very good detectives, however they both have their merits and
disadvantages. In this essay I will argue that Sherlock Holmes makes a better Detective than Dupin.
Dupin is arrogant, selfish, and imaginative, while Sherlock Holmes is Selfless, Confident, and he is
also imaginative like Dupin, but he does not let that imagination interfere with is work. Even though
Dupin and Sherlock Holmes both have merit with imagination, Sherlocks ability to not let his
imagination interfere with his work and his selflessness makes him a better detective, even though he
may not always get his case right. Dupin is a very arrogant person an observation is made through

Sherlock Holmes is selfless in his acts in the fact that he does not want any sort of reward for his work

Artificial Intelligence in William Gibson’s Neuromancer...
Artificial Intelligence in William Gibson s Neuromancer Artificial Intelligence is a term not too
widely used in today s society. With today s technology we haven t found a way to enable someone to
leave their physical body and let their mind survive within a computer. Could it be possible? Maybe
someday, but for now it s just in theory. The novel by William Gibson, Neuromancer, has touched
greatly on the idea of artificial intelligence. He describes it as a world where many things are possible.
By simply logging on the computer, it opens up a world we could never comprehend. The possibilities

Effects Of The New Deal On African Americans
1. Discuss how the New Deal both assisted and discriminated against blacks and the effects that this
had on them.
In 1933 Franklin D. Roosevelt promise of the New Deal goal was to provide all Americans with
security and bolster the American economy, with the intention to assist the under privileged. There
was many inequities in the New Deal housing, agricultural and economic programs; blacks had
opportunities to obtain employment, some in areas previously closed to them. The Agricultural
Adjustment Act of 1933 was one of the laws that was passed to assist farmers by cutting production
and forcing up food prices. But instead it left many poor Black sharecroppers out of work and caused
black consumers to pay higher food prices. The New Deal program eventually made it harder to hire
individuals at a minimum wage if they lacked skills. As the result many Blacks in the South and North
was dealt a hard hand, which resulted in many losing their jobs. ... Show more content on

Effective Use Of Revenge In Shakespeare s Hamlet
Within William Shakespeare s tremendously successful Hamlet, various literary techniques are
implemented into the bombastic, dialogue based text in order to effectively convey the theme, which
drives the tragic tale: revenge. Hamlet is the Prince of Denmark, set on a quest for revenge by a
ghostly figure oddly resembling his recently murdered father. Within this gripping tale, Shakespeare
describes Hamlet s descent into madness as Hamlet becomes ruthlessly obsessed with the idea of
revenge. The literary technique most employed within this composition is a proficient use of
characterization that expresses Hamlet s continuous descent into madness, as he becomes consumed
with a lust for revenge. What furthers the reasoning that revenge is a dominant theme within the piece
is the recurrence of the yearning for retribution. It can be assessed that Shakespeare does not take
kindly to the idea of revenge, based upon the way in which it is ... Show more content on

To respond to any given situation, characters within this tragedy use the actions of others as a means
of justifying their own. This is an indirect example of revenge. An instance of this would be Hamlet s
mother responding to King Hamlet s death by going on to immediately marry the King s brother.
While her actions may not have been in spite, her response is still reactive and destructive of the
personal lives of those around her, specifically Hamlet, who quickly develops a loathing and distrust
for women, due to his mother s unfaithful ways.
Hamlet is not a performance piece that singularly focuses upon the horrendous consequences, caused
by the seeking of revenge. It may also be perceived as an intellectual piece that incorporates critical
thinking to pursue a reasonable response to situations. This is demonstrated in Hamlet s decision as of
whether or not to eliminate Claudius when the opportunity presented

Personal Leadership Style Of My Career Essay
1. Throughout my career, I have had the opportunity to work for several leaders who in one way or
another influenced and molded my personal leadership style. Although not all of them are revered as
positive influences, each one of them provided me with the building blocks to develop myself as a
leader and find my place within the organization.
2. Remembering a Boatswains Mate Master Chief at my first unit. He taught me to be fair but firm. I
can practically hear him right now saying Don t take it personal, keep it professional and always do
the right thing . That phrase, as simple as it might sound guided my early stages of development into
the leader I am today. After the BMCM, some time passed before I came across a young Lieutenant
Commander who is now a Rear Admiral. An extremely intelligent man who taught me to pursue a
higher education and never stop improving myself professionally, as a person, leader and parent. He
was often absent from the office tending to other affairs, but his presence was felt throughout. He told
us to find the one thing we liked to do and master it.
3. Years passed without much of a leader role model. Although I worked for some, they did not
influence me in any way. The next influential leader in my career came in the form of a Warrant
Officer who had a completely different approach to leadership from my two previous influences. For
him, it was his way or the highway. He did not value input from the Chiefs nor the crew. He did not

Gertrude s Tragic End Of Shakespeare s Hamlet
John (Zhiyao) Ma
21L.009, Shakespeare
March 11, 2015
Gertrude s Tragic End The nature of Shakespeare s plays, with its notable lack of stage directions,
gives way to multiple different interpretations of the characters, plot, and even of the purpose of the
play itself. The character of Gertrude is no exception. Gertrude s character and motives, being left
ambiguous, have been interpreted in many different ways in various productions of Hamlet. Was she
implicit in the death of King Hamlet, or was she merely a clueless bystander? Did she drink the poison
as an act of motherly self sacrifice, or was it an accidental tragedy? Zefferelli s Hamlet (1990) and
Almereyda s Hamlet (2000) provide two different interpretations on Gertrude s characterization. In
particular, there exist substantial differences in their renditions of Gertrude s death while Almereyda
portrays her death as a noble suicide, Zefferelli paints her death as a by product of her unceasing lust
for pleasure. Furthermore, in that scene, we also notice a difference in Hamlet s attitude towards
Gertrude. By analyzing these points along with other scenes within the context of the entire film, we
manage to develop an understanding of Almereyda s and Zefferelli s view on Gertrude and how use
that to develop the tragic conclusion of the final scene. Almereyda s rendition of Gertrude s death
portrays her death as a noble act of self sacrifice. [Clip 1 Gertrude s end]. At the beginning of the

Willa Cather s Neighbour Rosicky
After reading Willa Cather s Neighbour Rosicky story, one can see that there are puritan,
transcendental, regionalism, naturalism and realism characteristics in the story (1863). Cather was able
to identify Rosicky s puritan characteristics when describing his mental and physical toughness. The
transcendental characteristic is shown when Rosicky becomes a resident of New York, which becomes
as natural as walking the busy, noisy streets. In contrast, it can also be unnatural when the streets are
empty or when the nostalgia of the city wears off (Cather 1871). The regionalism characteristics are
illustrated throughout the story as it relates to the specific places and people being impacted.
Naturalism is discussed in the extreme situations that Rosicky experiences throughout his life. In one
perspective, the story follows the motivational theory in psychology that argues that while people aim
to meet basic needs, they seek to meet successively higher needs in the form of a pyramid (Maslow).
The focus of this paper is on the realism characteristics that Cather described distinctly as the poor,
middle class and ordinary stages of Rosicky s life. Rosicky was poor in many ways. He lost his
mother as a young boy and was forced to live with his grandparents in the country (Cather 1871). He
believed his life would get the better. When he was eighteen, he moved to London to live with his
cousin (Cather 1874). Fortune did not follow him to London, since his cousin had moved to

Creating A Blue Ocean Strategy
According to Michael Porter, a company strategist who understands that competition extends well
beyond existing rivals will detect wider competitive threats and be better equipped to address them
(Porter, 2008, p.16). Thinking comprehensively about the structure of the industry as well as its
customers can afford companies the ability to obtain superior performance. Therefore, it is key for
companies to focus on how to maintain existing customers as well as lure new ones.
Three tiers of non customers
As we have learned from our readings, to create a blue ocean strategy means to reach out to untapped
market space, demand creation, and the opportunity for highly profitable growth (Kim Mauborgne,
2005, p.4). These blue ocean strategies can exist beyond existing industries/markets or they can be
expanded upon in existing markets (red oceans). Either way, companies need to go beyond competing
(p.5). To do so companies should identify and attract non customers. The three tiers of non customers
identify different level of non customers companies can attract to convert them into new customers.
We will discuss these non customers as it applies to the Apple IPhone.
The first tier non customers are those smartphone users that are curious about the IPhone and
interested in possible switching. The launch of the IPhone 5 was geared towards two sets of buyers;
existing customers and first tier non customers. Both sets were disappointed with the previous IPhones
screen sizes. The

Hahn s founding of nuclear fission had created a big change to the world both during and after the
time he lives. The tremendous implications of this discovery have led to study on possible military
developments. Fission products are produced in nuclear weapon explosions, with the amount
depending on the type of weapon. The largest source of fission products is from nuclear reactor. Some
fission products are also used in industrial inventions and innovations. For example, some ion can
react with steel surfaces to form a corrosion resistant layer. In this way, it renders the steel surface
passive. In a similar way the release of radio iodine in a serious power reactor accident could be
retarded by adsorption on metal surfaces within the nuclear plant. Furthermore, nuclear fission also
takes part in medicine areas. Currently, nuclear fission is not used directly in medicine, however
radiation, radioactive isotopes, and scanning devices (X Rays, CAT scans e.t.c.) that use radiation are.
All of these inventions and innovation would not exist without his discovery. Therefore, I feel very

The Importance Of Gun Control Of Guns
In the article Get a Knife, Get a Dog, But Get Rid of Guns, Molly Ivins argues against ownership of
guns and suggests that knives and dogs should replace guns. According to the article, ownership of
guns by civilians is not justifiable and that the Second Amendment does not imply that ordinary
citizens should own guns. As seen in the article, there have been several discussions regarding gun
control with some supporting gun ownership while others supporting gun control. In this essay it will
be argued that civilians should own guns for their protection and security and because the Second
Amendment supports gun ownership.
According to Ivins, the Second Amendment allows well regulated militias to own and use guns.
However, the author acknowledges that while this is true, the well regulated militia does not include
unregulated citizens as it is this lack of gun control that is destroying the security of the nation. While
the Second Amendment and what it entails should be supported, it will be wrong to agree with the
article that gun ownership by unregulated citizens is jeopardizing the security of the country.
According to research, there is no relationship between gun ownership and the insecurity in the
country (Kates and Mauser 653). For instance, compared to America, Europe witnessed low homicide
and gun related crimes before and after the introduction of gun control laws. In addition, the gun
control laws were introduced after World War 1 and not because of high rates of

Class Inequality And The American Class
A response to Class in America 2009 makes some good points why Americans hate the word class.
Class is a word to classify a group of people to a certain social status. Americans do not like to be put
in a category based off of their money. Gregory Mantsios the author, explains how we view ourselves.
For example, most American citizens identify themselves with work. Mantsios gives other reasons,
and a solution to fix the American class labeling. Mantsios made some really good points about how
Americas view word class, and made me agree with some of his myth. He also presented a weak
solution that would go against our government to fix the problem of class in America. Class in
America by Gregory Mantsios is a profile of class inequality in today s society in America. He begins
by mentioning that people in America, rich or poor, do not seem to talk about class or class
differences. He says that is why classes divide. He mentions myths most Americans believe that this
country is classless, and full of equal opportunity, and replaces them with realities. These realities are
that class inequality is not pretty bad but getting worse. Emphasized by profiles of citizens of various
classes. He concludes that the main problems are capitalism, racism, and androcentric, and the
solution is redistribution of wealth. Mantsios says, Workers are most likely to identify with their
employer, industry, or occupational group (177). When you ask most people what they do for a living

Sakai is a two and a half year old boy who attends a preschool which is under supervision of a
Christian church. This preschool has three classes: one for preschool, the others for kindergarten 1 and
kindergarten 2; the children range from ages 3 to 5 years old. There are four main teachers and a
principal of the school, and there is a total of 26 students in the three classes. I chose Sakai because he
is the youngest one in the school and he has many behavior problems with his main teacher and with
his peers. Since he is the youngest, his behavior is of interest. I will use concepts of this course to
analyze ways to understand his behavior and help him grow and develop. I observed Sakai as a
teacher in Jumpstart program; I go there two ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When I ask Sakai to listen and try to guide him and tell him to be good, he listens to me, but his
behavior quickly changes. He will easily walk away without changing his attitude.
Sakai s inappropriate behavior is that he plays too rough with his toys and acts rough with his peers
and teachers. Rough behavior can become an entrenched habit by age 8. Furthermore, it sends a
message that hurting people is acceptable. Children at the preschool age are very active and
sometimes their play can get rough. Although this type of play may sometimes appear to be serious, a
teacher can usually tell if they are really fighting. They are just beginning to realize they have physical
power and strength. Most of the time, rough play is harmless, but fun. We have to step in when the
child punches a playmate or tries to hurt him. Sakai and his twin brother usually sit with their teacher
Mrs. O because they are smaller than the rest and their language skills are much less developed than
the rest of their peers. Sakai always plays alone. He does not even play with his brother. The teacher
always tries to separate them, so they do not play with each other. One day during free time, Sakai
joined the other students in play. While they were playing with a puzzle mat, he jumped onto the mat
and started to throw everything the other children had done. The other two boys, Abnor and Peter,
tried to tell him to leave their puzzle, but Sakai did not. Abnor then tried

How Dow Chemical Could Benefit From The Acquisition Of Dupont
Acquisitions and mergers is the growth strategy of many companies today. Sometime a company may
decide to buy shares in another company while other times a company may decide to acquire the
whole company. This paper discusses how Dow Chemical could benefit from the acquisition of
DuPont. It will also cover the various accounting methods used.
Introduction to Dow Chemical and DuPont Dow Chemical was founded in 1897 and became
incorporated in 1947. Dow Chemical is an integrated science and technology company which
produces chemicals, advance materials, agro science and plastic products. All Dow facilities are

DuPont has 6 major segments which include Agriculture, Electronic Communication, Industrial
Biosciences, Nutrition and Health and Performance Material and Safety. 54% of DuPont s agriculture
sales are outside the United States. DuPont is one of Dow s major competitors worldwide and is the
second largest chemical company in the United States [E I du Pont, 2015] and [Investor Relations,
2015]. DuPont has been facing several challenges over the past year. A recent Wall Street Journal
article outlines the challenges DuPont is dealing with as a decline in sales and disagreements amongst
shareholders. DuPont is blaming much of their troubles on the increase value of the U.S. dollar and
foreign currency translations. Shareholders believe that now is the time to streamline their processes
and spin off DuPont into 4 different companies [DuPont Forecast, 2015]. Financial Statements
retrieved from Market Watch support the articles claim that DuPont sales are declining. DuPont has
seen their sales growth decline to a negative 2.87% and their cost of goods sold growth decline to a
negative 16.65% [DuPont Financial, 2015].
Dow s Strategic Plan Dow Chemical is known best for acquiring other companies. In October, 2014
Dow formed a joint venture with Univation Technologies, LLC by purchasing ExxonMobil s shares of
this company. Exxon Mobile is also a major competitor of Dow. Acquisitions have allowed Dow
Chemical to diversify their product line and

The World Of Android Smartphones Essay
In the crowded world of Android smartphones, one way that vendors try to differentiate is through the
inclusion of ever better features and specifications. Samsung (NASDAQOTH: SSNLF ) , which ships

Oral Tradition Paper
It was the intention of this paper to situate The Oral Tradition Workshop for Educators and other
intercultural programs in Esmeraldas into the greater context of intercultural educational programs
globally. First, it aimed to illustrate that intercultural education is often a response to long standing
historical, political, and economic marginalization of one group by the dominate culture. For Afro
Ecuadorians, as in the cases of Europe and Latin America, the focus on intercultural education
emerged as a response to historical marginalization after the amendment to the constitution in 1998
calling for expanded collective rights of indigenous groups and Afro Ecuadorian. At the heart of
intercultural education programs is the assumption that the school and its key actors (students,
educators, administrators) play a critical role in eradicating inequality and negotiating spaces between
cultures (Aikman, 1997). This belief is evident in all of the cases presented in the paper as well as the
intercultural education programs in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These policies have left Afro Ecuadorians disproportionally poorer and less educated than other
groups in Ecuador. Thus, policy leaders intended to improve these conditions through inclusive
education policies that recognize the significance of the contributions of Afro Ecuadorians in the
national discourse.
The TTOA workshop is an example of this initiative. The decision to use the TTOA workshop to
explore the development of intercultural programs in the region is due to the fact that, in many ways,
the program is a replica of other intercultural education initiatives in the region. First, Juan Garcia, a
pioneer of Afro Ecuadorian educational programs, created it. It also aimed to emphasize the
historically, political, and economic significance of Afro Ecuadorians in the larger context of

You can find Quaking Aspen, Douglas fir, and Blue Spruce forest up on the mountain. The Ponderosa

Decolonization Of The British Empire
Decolonization in the British Empire is a deliberate process involving the colonial power and
emerging local elite. The discussions in Chapters 1 and 2 provide insights into colonial development
and the pre independence environment which provide context for answering the research questions
and testing the hypotheses. This chapter examines the first question why do some newly sovereign
states retain ties with the JCPC? Based on my theory that states chose the final appellant court it
expects to be a reliable partner in the new governing coalition. The emerging elite that form the
coalition are influence by the colonial experience of colony. For the purposes of this research the U.K.
s Westminster Act of 1931 or the official year of independence is considered the critical juncture. The
Westminster Act gives the Dominions Australia, Canada, and New Zealand, the option to abolish
appeals to the JCPC. The critical juncture for all other states is the year of independence starting with
India and Sri Lanka in 1948 to the most recent, Brunei, in 1984. I hypothesize that the longer length of
time the state was a colony increases the likelihood that the JCPC will be retained. Second, type of
colonial rule direct rule (as opposed to indirect) increases the likelihood that the JCPC will be retained
as the final appellant court at independence. This chapter proceeds in the following manner. First, I
explain the selection of former colonies for the sample. Second, I present the

The Working Poor by D. Shipler Essay
The Working Poor The objective of this essay is to illuminate my overall reaction to the reading of
The Working Poor conveying what I do not like while highlighting a sociological perspective, in
addition to explaining if the reading is applicable to my own life experience. Taking notice, the subject
at hand was very sobering alluding even if we ourselves have not been partakers of living in the
obscurity of prosperity between poverty and wellbeing, certainly we have encountered someone that
has become a victim to it. With this in mind, my reaction is there are countless victims of poverty;
surely one does not have to go very far to find them as we understand them to be the working class.
There are those that may express the thought of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We get a glimpse of the Social Darwinism perspective survival of the fittest and only the strong will
continue. We have been taught Democratic Egalitarianism and Individualism argue equality and
privileges should be demonstrated and given to all citizens, this would be the ideal situation,
unfortunately the poor was simply lazy and the master of their fate. Interestingly morality came into
view never looking at the devices engaged to inhibit access to a free membership of the American life
as the culprit. More over the article mentioned being poor is to be considered a religious factor by
many. Those that were poverty stricken was stigmatized as beliefs dictated by Puritans and numerous
religious communists an individual out of God s favor was doom to suffer; poverty aided as a symbol
of this social ill. Various subscriptions given however, with many prerequisites; such as acquiring
skills or obtaining a job whose initial pay was favorable would serve as a cure all; certainly one could
say, there is a degree of legitimacy as in some cases what was aforementioned has worked, but quite
often is not the end result. If the success story yielded a higher rate one possibly will walk away with a

Descriptive Essay On Ttto Bene
The smooth, heart felt voice of Jersey Boy Frank Sinatra floods my ears as I enter Mario s Tutto Bene.
The dim, lit dining room with hanging Tiffany Lamps and era style tables from the 1940 s takes you
back into an era of glamor and organized crime. The half moon Italian leather booths that surround the
outmost of the dinner room are soft and comfortable. The authentic Italian foods such as: Penne
Vodka, Chicken Saltimbocca, Shrimp Scampi and Veal Parmigiana engulf your sense of smell and
make your mouth water. The rich Red and White wines that are imported directly from Italy sing a
symphony across your taste buds. This is New Jersey dining at its best.
Mario s Tutto Bene is the very image of Italian beauty, comfort and cuisine. The walls are painted a
dark wine color with deep brown woodwork adorning the walls and doorways. The long dark brown
bar that stretches out before you is sculpted by hand and polished to a high gloss, reflecting your very
image off of it, like a mirror. There is a sleek, shiny, black Piano in perfect opposition of the bar, set up
on a small stage, enclosed by wood banisters that stand guard on either side of the stairs polished in
the same deep hue of the bar. The half moon Italian leather booths surround the outermost area of the
dining hall, leaving room for tables, large enough to accommodate 8 10 people in the middle.
If someone prefers to enjoy their meal outside, the hostess walks them through double glass doors out
onto the veranda. Hand

  • 2. Walt Whitman, An Enemy Or A Model For Ezra Pound Nicoleta Teodora Dincă Instructor s Name : Dragoș Manea 2 februarie 2017 Walt Whitman , an enemy or a model for Ezra Pound? In this essay , I want to demonstrate if Walt Whitman is seen as an enemy or as a model by Ezra Pound. Even if the poem is ambiguous at first, during its we see that Walt Whitman is seen as a model, as a spiritual father endowed with artistic creed which will be taken by his child. Poem can be divided into 2 parts, the first part corresponds to childhood and refusal to accept the style of Whitman (line 1 2) and the second part corresponds to maturity , where Pound accepts his style ( the wood) that he carves to become better, more understandable by his era. (line 3 9) Pound saw Walt Whitman gradually , he passed from considered him an enemy, a bad person ( i have detested you long enough ) , to a stubborn father ( pig headed father) , a spiritual one who wants what it is good for his child ,a genius, to a fatherland and also a forebear whose creation Pound will continue. But according to ,,The Cambridge Companion to Walt Whitman : Whitman delineates a composite figure: a father fashioned as much to resist as to obey, an older brother sharing secrets, a lover making cryptic signs by which all comrades of manly love might recognize and greet each other, a priestly poet ... • 3. Is Bromden Dehumanize In One Flew Over The Cuckoo s Nest In Kesey s novel, One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest, the narrator, Bromden, has a very vivid and disturbing dream of the hospital as a slaughterhouse where the staff hang old Blastic on a meat hook and cut him open. A bit of the horrifying dream is shown when Bromden describes, The worker takes the scalpel and slices up the front of old Blastic with a clean swing and the old man stops thrashing around. I expect to be sick, but there s no blood...just a shower of rush and ashes... (Kesey 88). Symbolism of machinery is shown throughout the gruesome dream and specifically ash and rust pours out of old Blastic. The symbolism shown is the hospital as place that dehumanizes the patients and turns them into mechanical patients, taking away their uniqueness ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Kesey s novel, One Flew Over the Cuckoos s Nest, McMurphy is the protagonist. Kesey throughout the book has depicted McMurphy of trying to pull the patients out of the fog. Bromden s perception of McMurphy s attempts to drag them out of the fog is showed when he states, There s no sense in it, any fool can see; I wouldn t do it on my own (Kesey 142). This takes place when McMurphy is trying to get the chronics to vote for the time of watching TV to be changed. Although this is before Bromden realizes he voted because of his own free will, Bromden sees McMurphy s attempts to pull them out of the fog as troubling, as it will increase tensions between the patients and Big Nurse. McMurphy perceives his attempts to pull the other patients out of the fog as vital, this is show when he is trying to get the chronics to vote for the time change to watch TV and he says, One of you guys for cryin out loud! This is where you get the edge, don t you see that? We have to do this... (Kesey 142). As the only one in the hospital that is different and still actually laughs, Mc Murphy still has his individuality and sees the control that the Big Nurse is keeping over the patients. In recognizing this and the dehumanization that the other patients have gone through, McMurphy constantly tries to pull the patients out of the fog, seeing that Big Nurse will have no power if they all retaliate against her. At the end of part one, McMurphy is shown with success of pulling the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Comparing Knowledge in Descartes’ Meditations on First... Comparing Knowledge in Descartes Meditations on First Philosophy and Hume s An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding, Rationalists would claim that knowledge comes from reason or ideas, while empiricists would answer that knowledge is derived from the senses or impressions. The difference between these two philosophical schools of thought, with respect to the distinction between ideas and impressions, can be examined in order to determine how these schools determine the source of knowledge. The distinguishing factor that determines the perspective on the foundation of knowledge is the concept of the divine. Descartes is a prime example of a rationalist. Descartes begins his Meditations on First ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Once the certainty of Res Cogitans is developed, clear and distinct perceptions are replaced with clear and distinct ideas. It is these ideas from which Descartes derive knowledge, including the existence of Res Extensa (corporeal things). Therefore, Descartes, a rationalist, derives his knowledge from ideas and reason, all of which stem from an instance of natural light. The empiricists, however, do not believe in natural light and therefore do not hold knowledge to be derived from these innate ideas. David Hume is one of these empiricists. Hume was a scientist and an atheist; his occupation and beliefs disallowed him from holding innate ideas to be a valid basis for knowledge. In An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding, Hume points out a hierarchy that exists among ideas and impressions: the most lively thought is still inferior to the most lively impression (Hume: 10). Hume also establishes that for all of his ideas he can trace them back to impressions, those for things which he has not had impressions of he cannot have an idea. What never was seen, or heard of, may yet be conceived: (Hume: 11) A blind man can form no notion of colours; a deaf man of sounds (Hume: 12). From these impressions and ideas stem two kinds of knowledge: relations of ideas and matters of fact. Relation of ideas are a priori and do not need to be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The Pros And Cons Of Open Carry The open presence of guns in public life can quickly escalate everyday conflicts into deadly altercations. It has been one cause of tragic, irreversible damage to innocent lives of citizens through the long US history. Despite the evidence that openly carrying firearms in public spaces endangers public safety, most states lack laws to limit open carry and some have even taken steps to weaken regulation regarding the practice. Historically, most states either prohibited or strongly regulated the carrying of firearms in public spaces. Over the past three decades, however, state laws have changed dramatically. In that time, many states have significantly weakened their laws to permit more and more people to carry guns in public places and to reduce or eliminate local law enforcement s ability to keep potentially dangerous people from carrying guns in public. Open carry refers to the practice of carrying a firearm in public. It has been legal in many states since the 19th century. Proponents of open carry claim that criminals usually conceal their weapons in contrast to the law abiding citizens who display their sidearms. Also the regulation of guns open carry would ... • 7. Why I Decided For The Army For Three Reasons It is dark outside and many men lay sick on the cold dirt floor of the huts. I want to return to my family, however I must serve my country until the end. Our huts only have mud and straw for our bedding. Space was limited in the hut, there are no windows and only one door. The huts are 16 by 14 , not enough room for the 12 men inside. Still, many of the conditions at Valley Forge are okay for living in. The living conditions occurred to be very harsh, but they happened to be bearable. I decided to re enlist in the army for three reasons; the army needs more soldiers, in the end there is much pride and glory, and many leaders are helping us get through the war. In 1773, the Boston Tea Party commenced causing most of this drama with the British. Before we arrived at camp we had victories in Princeton and Trenton, demonstrating that we can win this war. Then in 1776, our Declaration of Independence had started to be written. Before I left to the war, my home was quartered or taken over by the British. I knew that I had to leave my family to help support them. In the year 1777 our army marched into the Valley Forge camp, home for me and my fellow men for 9 months. We ate, slept, and trained for many days. Upon our arrival at Valley Forge many soldiers started to desert, or in other words, they were leaving without permission from General Washington. The war conditions were getting worse and I knew that I had a duty to help the army. The first reason I will re enlist in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Self Creation In The Great Gatsby In this life, you encounter friends who leave footprints on your path. The actions they take and the words they use leave fragments of their impact on you. Other people s impressions are eluded along your journey. You may not forget, but you do not cherish the essence of their time. In the book, The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald ties two concepts together, side by side. As he throws the main character into a strikingly new environment, Nick Carraway seizes the opportunity to make true friendships. At the same time, he is swayed and mixed into a crowd of shallow encounters with untrustworthy people. Dishonesty in a woman is a thing you never blame deeply I was casually sorry, and then I forgot. (Fitzgerald 58) In spite of thinking so fondly of his interactions with Gatsby, Baker does not leave a huge impact on Carraway. Other than false infatuation, she proves nothing more to him than another new face. A new face that he quite obviously does not trust or seem to think of as mysteriously intricate, he drops the thought of Baker. When it comes time for him to come to his senses and break up with her, she reveals something about herself that confuses Carraway. I wanted to leave things in order and not just trust that obliging indifferent sea to sweep my refuse away. (Fitzgerald 177) When Carraway states that he would like to get his priorities straight, he shows the difference between him and the others around him. His true colors are honest. He tries to put his real emotions on display with the means of keeping his situation under control. This is a real effort to avoid the illusion of a meaningless relationship. How far do the sources you have used support this interpretation of evacuation in World War Two? (25 marks) Before the War in September 1939, the government understood the risk of air raids and the danger they bring upon major cities in England. Plans for evacuation started as early as 15 years before in 1924; the Air Raid Precaution Committee (ARPC) identified London as the main target, with children as the biggest concern. The government identified, after the ARPC produced a report on the potential disasters of air raid attacks in 1925, that maintaining civilian morale was a priority, and that the fear of bombing would bring it down. To further justify evacuation and therefore show its success in keeping evacuees safe, source six shows casualties in Liverpool. It shows that the death rate was generally over 100 and even in May 1941, at 1453. Again, this justifies the need to evacuate and the safety achieved through evacuation. Finally, sources three shows the success in evacuation as the sources show effectiveness and good organisation as a success of evacuation. This encompasses overall efficiency and pre evacuation planning. To be able to transport the huge amount of 1million (intended 4million) to the countryside required this efficiency and overall, sources three and source two mention the efficiency and order of the transport (trains) and organisation in the countryside. In source three, a newspaper article from Kent, says that the departures were efficient, reflecting that it was seen to that each child got milk and food , and followed up with no confusion . Even source two, though showing evacuation in a negative way, also comments that the trains ran to time and that evacuation came complete with teachers . Having teachers is shown in sources one, three and four as well. • 11. Action Is Morally Just Or Unjust In philosophy, it is often difficult to formulate an accurate definition of whether an action is morally just or unjust. In order to comprehensively explain the morality of a specific action, the definition must meet the standards of both necessary and sufficient conditions. Necessary conditions are the components of the definition that must be true of the action in order to classify the action as either morally just or unjust. Although the necessary condition must be a component of the definition, it alone does not solidify the morality of an action, which is why the sufficient condition must also be addressed. The conditions that, if accurately met, guarantees that the definition achieves its purpose is the sufficient condition. When applying these stipulations to the relativist view presented in class: If a person S utters a statement of the form action A is morally wrong, this statement is true if and only if S believes it is true, it is not difficult to argue that this particular view does not meet the standards of necessary or sufficient conditions. Besides not meeting necessary and sufficient conditions, It is not plausible that a moral claim can be true depending solely on whether or not the speaker believes it. Human emotions are continuously changing; person S may believe action A is right today, but wrong tomorrow, making the relativist view inconsistent. It is also impossible to say an action is universally wrong based on the sole thought of one person, seeing as though each person has a different set of beliefs, cultures, and customs. On the basis of necessary conditions, according to the relativist view presented above, an action A is only moral wrong if speaker S deems it to be wrong at that particular moment. However, the action may still be morally wrong, even if the speaker deems it otherwise, meaning speaker S s definition is not necessarily correct. In terms of the sufficient condition, action A may have been inflicted as an accident, although the speaker did not immediately know that. Therefore, the speaker may have believed the action was morally wrong in the beginning, but when speaker S obtains new knowledge pertaining to the action, they may think otherwise. It was suggested in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. The Negative Effects Of Pornography With the surge of wider spread accessibility to the internet on mobile phones and laptops comes a surge in the accessibility and viewing of pornography. Much research has been done to study how such an increase in pornography consumption is impacting the marriage relationship. Some findings have indicated that users incur serious negative effects, including a 25% higher divorce rate, are 101% more likely to be unfaithful to a spouse, and were 12% less likely to describe their marriage as very happy (Doran Price, 2014). Interestingly, various studies have also noted that the effects may be different for men than they are for women, stating that for women who viewed pornography in ranges between 2 3 times a month and once a day or more, their marital quality was actually higher than those who never viewed pornography... (Perry, 2017). Considering such contradictory findings, it can be difficult for couples to know how pornography use plays into a healthy marriage, if it does at all. Pornography use, at the very least, has been shown to create conflict and stress between spouses if the non using partner is more religious or has negative views surrounding pornography. Is has also been linked with lower self esteem in women. The affects of this activity must be viewed not only through an individual lens, but through a couple s view. Taking such a view may reveal that regardless of the empirical outcomes of porn use, perceptions, even, can have a serious negative impact ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. Comparing Tokyo And Auckland s Development Cities located globally increase significantly through the process of urbanisation, temporally and spatially. Through urbanisation, technology is a huge advancement for cities. The main technology advancement is transportation. I have chosen to compare Tokyo with Auckland. I will discuss Tokyo and Auckland s development (1880 1930), outlining pressures and opportunities created by technology advancements and how Tokyo is caused by urbanisation, comparing with Auckland. Tokyo s population is approximately 13.35million with rapid urban growth. The land area of Tokyo is approximately 2,187km2. Tokyo was first established in 1869. Tokyo was originally named Edo (small fishing village) in early 1800 s. Tokyo was a part of the Musashi Province development. The early 18th century, there were not much transportation in Edo, including planes, trains and cars. The main transport mode was walking, boats or horseback. Any cargo transported by people, oxen/horses, were by large carts or traditional boats. The Edo period (1603 1868), Edo did not have carriages drawn by horses compared to horse back carriages in Auckland. The main cause of cargo were by boats. Other transport were palanquins (equivalence to taxicabs). Palanquins were used in the city to transport people. Road networks were then a main pressure for Tokyo as to transport freight to long distances between cities. I mean, his view was, once I quit working, the house should be immaculate. And for me, I never wanted to be a housewife ever. So, Okay, Ill do a little cleaning. Ill do a little housewife stuff, and I ll do stuff with cooking. So before the flood, he was like Cant we get this place a little cleaner? Divorce and separations are common among people facing financial and emotional strain. Most of the women were very emotional after the flood because they felt as if they had lost all of what they had worked so hard to get so they turned their anger to their husbands. For example Diana, she took a lot of her frustration out on her husband because she thought that he did not do much to help them out to prevent their home from some of the damage before the flood. There were a lot of emotions fighting after the flood while the men felt that they had to be the strong ones, but they still had the sadness in their hearts because they blamed themselves because they looked at themselves as the protectors of their families. Some of the couples turned to divorce because they felt it was the right time, they had nothing to fight about because everything they had together was taken away by the flood while some of the couples stayed together and fought it out. Authorization policies therefore govern the disclosure and modification of information. Access controls are 3 procedures that are designed to control authorizations. They are responsible to limit access to stored data to authorized users only. · Integrity, Consistency An integrity policy states a set of rules (i. e. semantic integrity constraints) that define the correct states of the database during database operation and therefore can protect against malicious or accidental modification of information. Closely related issues to integrity and consistency are concurrency control and recovery. Concurrency control policies protect the integrity of the database in the presence of concurrent transactions. If these transactions do not terminate normally due to system crashes or security violations recovery techniques are used to reconstruct correct or valid database states. · Auditing

  • 18. Word Accuracy And Word Frequency Essay This study is a conceptualized replication of the Howes and Solomon (1951) experiment investigating word accuracy and word frequency in short duration trials. It is hypothesized that words that appear more often in printed text (easier to access in the lexicon) will be more accurately identified rather than words that appear less commonly. A total of 83 participants in the study were presented with words taken from the Throndike Lorge database. The words were presented for one second with a six second rest in the middle. This was done sixty times and the results suggest a moderate strong relationship between word accuracy and frequency. Though there are multiple factors that may have influenced these results. Introduction Word recognition involves an individual s ability to identify words independently without requiring related words for contextual help. A widely examined topic in the field of cognitive psychology, it deals with understanding printed letters as a word which has been kept in the lexicon. The word frequency effect is important in the recognition of words. It suggests more common words in printed language are easier, faster and more accurate to distinguish than words that appear less frequently. Outlined in their journal article, Howes and Solomon utilized Thorndike Lorge s word count for word frequency and measured the threshold of recognition. They found correlation coefficients of .68 to .75 between word frequency and threshold or duration. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. A Pension Policy For The Province Of Ontario A pension policy for the province of Ontario is being discussed, in an attempt to make it more effective or being readily available. The existing issue is how it functions in low interests rates and low returns in equity markets. Also, the low participation in such plans is failing the system as a whole. It is important the government to protect workers in the private sector; as it is noted one third of the paid workforce in 2005 was in a registered pension plan. Canada lacks when it comes to voluntary employer sponsored pension plans and tax assisted programs, like the TFSA, who must improve their services. The current pension plan fails to accommodate for private sector workers that are provided with no other occupation related pension program other than the CPP. Many of the solvency funding rules are still adopted from the Ontario Pension Benefits Act in 1966. The voluntary participation system has failed in Canada. The government must change into a compulsory contribution system for it to achieve the sufficient accumulation of assets. It is of concern that nearly two thirds of private sector DB pensions plans operated either closed or frozen plans . All pension plans should be based on individual circumstances, but currently the system lacks in regulating. The other main issue is low household saving rates that are misbalancing pension funds reserves. Effective Use Of Revenge In Shakespeare s Hamlet Within William Shakespeare s tremendously successful Hamlet, various literary techniques are implemented into the bombastic, dialogue based text in order to effectively convey the theme, which drives the tragic tale: revenge. Hamlet is the Prince of Denmark, set on a quest for revenge by a ghostly figure oddly resembling his recently murdered father. Within this gripping tale, Shakespeare describes Hamlet s descent into madness as Hamlet becomes ruthlessly obsessed with the idea of revenge. The literary technique most employed within this composition is a proficient use of characterization that expresses Hamlet s continuous descent into madness, as he becomes consumed with a lust for revenge. What furthers the reasoning that revenge is a dominant theme within the piece is the recurrence of the yearning for retribution. It can be assessed that Shakespeare does not take kindly to the idea of revenge, based upon the way in which it is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To respond to any given situation, characters within this tragedy use the actions of others as a means of justifying their own. This is an indirect example of revenge. While her actions may not have been in spite, her response is still reactive and destructive of the personal lives of those around her, specifically Hamlet, who quickly develops a loathing and distrust for women, due to his mother s unfaithful ways. Gertrude s Tragic End Of Shakespeare s Hamlet John (Zhiyao) Ma 21L.009, Shakespeare March 11, 2015 Gertrude s Tragic End The nature of Shakespeare s plays, with its notable lack of stage directions, gives way to multiple different interpretations of the characters, plot, and even of the purpose of the play itself. The character of Gertrude is no exception. Gertrude s character and motives, being left ambiguous, have been interpreted in many different ways in various productions of Hamlet. Was she implicit in the death of King Hamlet, or was she merely a clueless bystander? Did she drink the poison as an act of motherly self sacrifice, or was it an accidental tragedy? Zefferelli s Hamlet (1990) and Almereyda s Hamlet (2000) provide two different interpretations on Gertrude s characterization. In particular, there exist substantial differences in their renditions of Gertrude s death while Almereyda portrays her death as a noble suicide, Zefferelli paints her death as a by product of her unceasing lust for pleasure. Furthermore, in that scene, we also notice a difference in Hamlet s attitude towards Gertrude. By analyzing these points along with other scenes within the context of the entire film, we manage to develop an understanding of Almereyda s and Zefferelli s view on Gertrude and how use that to develop the tragic conclusion of the final scene. Almereyda s rendition of Gertrude s death portrays her death as a noble act of self sacrifice. [Clip 1 Gertrude s end]. At the beginning of the fencing duel, we see her ... Willa Cather s Neighbour Rosicky After reading Willa Cather s Neighbour Rosicky story, one can see that there are puritan, transcendental, regionalism, naturalism and realism characteristics in the story (1863). Cather was able to identify Rosicky s puritan characteristics when describing his mental and physical toughness. The transcendental characteristic is shown when Rosicky becomes a resident of New York, which becomes as natural as walking the busy, noisy streets. In contrast, it can also be unnatural when the streets are empty or when the nostalgia of the city wears off (Cather 1871). The regionalism characteristics are illustrated throughout the story as it relates to the specific places and people being impacted. Naturalism is discussed in the extreme situations that Rosicky experiences throughout his life. In one perspective, the story follows the motivational theory in psychology that argues that while people aim to meet basic needs, they seek to meet successively higher needs in the form of a pyramid (Maslow). The focus of this paper is on the realism characteristics that Cather described distinctly as the poor, middle class and ordinary stages of Rosicky s life. Rosicky was poor in many ways. Therefore, it is key for companies to focus on how to maintain existing customers as well as lure new ones. Three tiers of non customers As we have learned from our readings, to create a blue ocean strategy means to reach out to untapped market space, demand creation, and the opportunity for highly profitable growth (Kim Mauborgne, 2005, p.4). These blue ocean strategies can exist beyond existing industries/markets or they can be expanded upon in existing markets (red oceans). Either way, companies need to go beyond competing (p.5). To do so companies should identify and attract non customers. The three tiers of non customers identify different level of non customers companies can attract to convert them into new customers. The Importance Of Gun Control Of Guns In the article Get a Knife, Get a Dog, But Get Rid of Guns, Molly Ivins argues against ownership of guns and suggests that knives and dogs should replace guns. According to the article, ownership of guns by civilians is not justifiable and that the Second Amendment does not imply that ordinary citizens should own guns. As seen in the article, there have been several discussions regarding gun control with some supporting gun ownership while others supporting gun control. In this essay it will be argued that civilians should own guns for their protection and security and because the Second Amendment supports gun ownership. According to Ivins, the Second Amendment allows well regulated militias to own and use guns. However, the author acknowledges that while this is true, the well regulated militia does not include unregulated citizens as it is this lack of gun control that is destroying the security of the nation. While the Second Amendment and what it entails should be supported, it will be wrong to agree with the article that gun ownership by unregulated citizens is jeopardizing the security of the country. According to research, there is no relationship between gun ownership and the insecurity in the country (Kates and Mauser 653). Class is a word to classify a group of people to a certain social status. Americans do not like to be put in a category based off of their money. Gregory Mantsios the author, explains how we view ourselves. For example, most American citizens identify themselves with work. Mantsios gives other reasons, and a solution to fix the American class labeling. Mantsios made some really good points about how Americas view word class, and made me agree with some of his myth. He also presented a weak solution that would go against our government to fix the problem of class in America. Class in America by Gregory Mantsios is a profile of class inequality in today s society in America. He begins by mentioning that people in America, rich or poor, do not seem to talk about class or class differences. He says that is why classes divide. He mentions myths most Americans believe that this country is classless, and full of equal opportunity, and replaces them with realities. These realities are that class inequality is not pretty bad but getting worse. Emphasized by profiles of citizens of various classes. He concludes that the main problems are capitalism, racism, and androcentric, and the solution is redistribution of wealth. Rough behavior can become an entrenched habit by age 8. Furthermore, it sends a message that hurting people is acceptable. Children at the preschool age are very active and sometimes their play can get rough. Although this type of play may sometimes appear to be serious, a teacher can usually tell if they are really fighting. They are just beginning to realize they have physical power and strength. • 45. Oral Tradition Paper It was the intention of this paper to situate The Oral Tradition Workshop for Educators and other intercultural programs in Esmeraldas into the greater context of intercultural educational programs globally. First, it aimed to illustrate that intercultural education is often a response to long standing historical, political, and economic marginalization of one group by the dominate culture. For Afro Ecuadorians, as in the cases of Europe and Latin America, the focus on intercultural education emerged as a response to historical marginalization after the amendment to the constitution in 1998 calling for expanded collective rights of indigenous groups and Afro Ecuadorian. At the heart of intercultural education programs is the assumption that the school and its key actors (students, educators, administrators) play a critical role in eradicating inequality and negotiating spaces between cultures (Aikman, 1997). The discussions in Chapters 1 and 2 provide insights into colonial development and the pre independence environment which provide context for answering the research questions and testing the hypotheses. This chapter examines the first question why do some newly sovereign states retain ties with the JCPC? Based on my theory that states chose the final appellant court it expects to be a reliable partner in the new governing coalition. The emerging elite that form the coalition are influence by the colonial experience of colony. For the purposes of this research the U.K. s Westminster Act of 1931 or the official year of independence is considered the critical juncture. The Westminster Act gives the Dominions Australia, Canada, and New Zealand, the option to abolish appeals to the JCPC. The critical juncture for all other states is the year of independence starting with India and Sri Lanka in 1948 to the most recent, Brunei, in 1984. I hypothesize that the longer length of time the state was a colony increases the likelihood that the JCPC will be retained. Second, type of colonial rule direct rule (as opposed to indirect) increases the likelihood that the JCPC will be retained as the final appellant court at independence. This chapter proceeds in the following manner. First, I explain the selection of former colonies for the sample. Second, I present the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
