TYPES OF CONFLICT
CONFLICT RESOLUTION
• Conflict resolution is the process by which two or more
parties engaged in a disagreement, dispute or debate
reach an agreement resolving it.
• Conflict resolution, otherwise known as reconciliation, is a
conceptualized as the methods and process involved in
facilitating the peaceful ending of conflict and retribution.
DEFINITIONS OF CONFLICT RESOLUTION
• “Conflict Resolution is a natural, vital part of life. When conflict is
understood, it can become an opportunity to learn and create. The
challenge of people in conflict is to apply the principles of creative
cooperation in their human relationships.
--- Richard Bodine,Donna Crawford, and Fred Schrumpf---
• “Conflict Resolution is the understanding of dynamics of human
negotiation among confiding interest groups and how to achieve mutual
agreement.
--- Bill Warters (2000)---
THE GOALS OF CONFLICT RESOLUTION
When a dispute arises, often the best course of
action is conflict resolution to resolve the
disagreement.
• To produce a solution that all parties can agree.
• To work as quickly as possible to find the solution.
• To improve, not hurt, the relationship between the
groups in conflict.
WHY SHOULD YOU RESOLVE CONFLICT?
Some other good reasons to resolve conflict are:
• To understand more about those whose ideas, beliefs,
and backgrounds may be different from your own.
• To ensure that your relationship with opponents
continue and grow.
• To find peaceful solutions to difficult situations.
HOW CAN WE RESOLVE CONFLICTS?
7 steps to successfully negotiating the resolution of a conflict;
1. Understand the conflict
2. Communicate with the opposition
3. Brainstorm positive resolutions
4. Choose the best resolution
5. Use a third party mediator
6. Explore alternatives
7. Cope with stressful situations and pressure tactics
WHAT IS CONFLICT RESOLUTION?
Conflict Resolution Education teaches social and emotional competencies
to children and adults to help them handle conflict more constructively.
Build healthy relationships, and create constructive communities.
Conflict Resolution Education, as a field, overlaps with violence prevention,
positive development, social and emotional learning, and law-related
education.
Conflict resolution is designed in Schools to provide students with a neutral,
safe, environment where they can express their point of view and discuss
issues in a mutually satisfactory manner.
INTRODUCTION TO CONFLICT RESOLUTION EDUCATION (CRE)
• Teaching conflict resolution does not just lead to
more peaceful and productive schools.
• Conflict resolution is a range of process aimed at
alleviating or eliminating source of conflict.
• The phrase “ Conflict Resolution” is sometime used
interchangeably with the term dispute resolution.
CRE ENHANCE STUDENTS’ SOCIAL AND
EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT
•Increases empathy and perspective taking
•Improves emotional awareness and
management
•Reduce aggression
•Increases use of constructive conflict
behaviors.
CRE CREATES A SAFE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
Decreases conflicts between
groups of students
Decreases suspension,
absenteeism, and drop out rates.
Decreases incidents of violence
CRE CREATES A CONSTRUCTIVE LEARNING
ENVIRONMENT
• Improves academic achievement
• Improves classroom climate
• Improves school climate
• Increases valuing diversity and tolerance
ROLE OF CONFLICT RESOLUTION EDUCATION IN
RESOLVING CONFLICT
• Conflict is a part of life. Conflict Resolution and its management techniques to
teach students how to take creative approaches to the conflict situations.
• CRE helps to understand where and why conflict occurs; and also offering skills (
for both adults and students ) to manage, reduce, and work toward, minimizing
conflict.
• Inclusion of conflict resolution principles in the Conflict Resolution Education
helps students’ better understanding towards the relationship between academic
and the real world.
• The international role in CRE is also expanding in preventing escalation and
reconciliation (understanding) of conflict between warring parties of individual,
community and international level.
PURPOSE OF CONFLICT RESOLUTION EDUCATION
To fulfill their mission of educating youth and preparing them to
function effectively in adult society, schools must first be safe
places. Our schools are challenge in which:
• Each learner can feel physically and psychologically free from threats and
danger and can find opportunities to work and learn with others for the
mutual achievement of all.
• The diversity of the school’s population is respected and celebrated.
• The ability to resolve disputes effectively and non-violently is central to
the peaceful expression of human rights.
• Conflict resolution can be viewed as a responsibility of law-abiding
members of our society. Responsible citizens in a democracy ex press
their concerns peacefully and seek resolutions to problems that take into
account common interests and recognize the human dignity of all
involved.
• Schools can be places where children learn to live in civil association with
one another and prepare to assume their future roles as parents, as
community members and leaders, and as productive members of the
workforce.
• Conflict resolution skills are essential to public life in schools,
communities and workplaces.
MANY CONFLICTS IN SCHOOL ARISE OUT OF
DIFFERENCES;
• Cultural conflicts
• Social conflicts
• Personal and institutional differences often take the form of prejudice, discrimination,
harassment, and even hate crimes.
These conflicts are complex because they are rooted not only in prejudice and
discrimination related to cultural and social differences but also in the resulting
structures and relationships of inequality and privilege.
Conflict resolution education programs provide a framework for addressing these
problems. The programs promote respect and acceptance through new ways of
communicating and understanding.
