The document describes research conducted in Finland from 1996-2006 that evaluated the use of optical and radar remote sensing for cereal yield estimation. Four optical vegetation index models were developed and validated using Landsat and SPOT data to estimate baseline yields of wheat, barley, and oats. The yields from the vegetation index models were then compared to yields estimated by a crop model and composite SAR/NDVI models. The research aimed to develop remote sensing techniques to support Finland's national agricultural inventory program and the EU's Common Agricultural Policy.
