This document discusses learning styles and accepting criticism. It describes the visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning styles according to the VAK model. Each style is influenced best in different ways, such as visually for visual learners. The document also discusses constructive versus destructive criticism and provides techniques for accepting criticism assertively, such as agreeing with valid criticism, asking for more details, or diffusing aggressive criticism. The goal is to learn from criticism without becoming defensive or aggressive.

"Unstoppable Confidence” will enable us to smash through those barriers and limited beliefs that we have about ourselves and move forward in our life. Confidence helps us feel ready for life's experiences.
Self-confidence is an attitude about your skills and abilities. It means you accept and trust yourself and have a sense of control in your life. You know your strengths and weakness well, and have a positive view of yourself. You set realistic expectations and goals, communicate assertively, and can handle criticism.
Our beliefs drive our behavior and eventually our identity. If you want to change how you parent, you must be willing to look at what you really believe & be willing to change those beliefs. So what do you believe about relating to others?
The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

preferred or dominant thinking, learning style
and strengths

3. VAK - Visual, Auditory and Kinesthetic Learning Styles
According to the VAK model, most people possess a dominant or
preferred learning style, however some people have a mixed and
evenly balanced blend of the three styles.
A person's learning style is a reflection of their mix of intelligences.
It is also a reflection of their brain type and dominance.

6. 7. Dealing with the Auditory Type
The Auditory learning style is best influenced
by allowing him to listen to information: to the

750 Tips on Excellent Communication for Life
8. All of us have been criticized at some point in our lives. Being
able to accept criticism assertively is one of the most
important tasks we face on our journey to maturity.
850 Tips on Excellent Communication for Life
9. The word criticism comes from an Ancient Greek word describing a person who offers
reasoned judgment or analysis, value judgment, interpretation or observation. So to
accept criticism maturely we need to be able to accept feedback in the form of analysis,
observation or interpretation from other people about our behavior.
950 Tips on Excellent Communication for Life
10. Criticism can be either constructive or
destructive.
1050 Tips on Excellent Communication for Life
11. Constructive criticism is designed to provide genuine feedback in a helpful and
non-threatening way in order that the person being criticized may learn and
grow in some way. The feedback is typically valid, that is, it is a true criticism.
For example, “I really liked the way you wrote your report; I think it could be
even better if you focused more on improving your spelling”.
1150 Tips on Excellent Communication for Life
12. Destructive criticism is criticism that is either not valid or true or
criticism that if valid is delivered in an extremely unhelpful way. It is
often given by someone without much thought or can be designed
to embarrass or hurt. For example, “This report is atrocious, your
spelling is appalling”.
1250 Tips on Excellent Communication for Life
13. How we accept criticism is largely based on our experiences with
criticism as a child. If we did not experience any criticism as a child
then when we first experience it as an adult we may be
devastated.
1350 Tips on Excellent Communication for Life
14. If we received very constructive criticism as a child we may cope
well with criticism as an adult. If we were criticized harshly and
punitively then we may see criticism as hurtful and rejecting.
1450 Tips on Excellent Communication for Life
15. This latter case often occurs when our whole person was criticized rather than just our behavior. For
example, if we made a mistake as a child and were told “you are stupid”, this implied that it was us as a
whole person who was stupid.
1550 Tips on Excellent Communication for Life
16. The criticism feels like a rejection and we can feel hopeless about
how to change. On the other hand if we were told “that was a silly
thing to do”, then our behavior and us as a person, are seen as two
separate things. It is the behavior that is stupid not us. Therefore,
we have the power to change that behavior.
1650 Tips on Excellent Communication for Life
17. Becoming confused
Becoming defensive
Acting silly
Ignoring it and hurting inside
Internalizing anger and stewing over it
Retaliating with anger and blame
Shutting down
Withdrawing
Running away
1750 Tips on Excellent Communication for Life
18. Take a minute and think of the last time you were criticized.
Now jot down the situation and how you reacted.
1850 Tips on Excellent Communication for Life
19. Passive Responses to Criticism
Aggressive Responses to Criticism
Assertive Responses to Criticism
1950 Tips on Excellent Communication for Life
20. We may just run and hide and feel hurt and confused. We may tend to just
agree with any criticism whether it is valid or not.
For example, “Yes you’re right I am...., I’m useless, and I’ve got to stop”.
We can tend to see a criticism of our behavior as a rejection of ourselves. This
type of response can lead to depression, anxiety and low self esteem. We feel
like the world is a critical place and we agree with all the criticisms!
2050 Tips on Excellent Communication for Life
21. Alternatively, we may laugh it off and criticize ourselves even more
with the attitude “If I criticize myself more and make it a joke then
no-one will know I am hurt”. In the long run this has the same
effect as agreeing openly with the criticism.
2150 Tips on Excellent Communication for Life
22. If we tend to respond aggressively then we will tend to hear criticism as a
personal attack.
Feeling attacked we will then become defensive and may go on the attack
ourselves.
For example, “How dare you, I’m not late. You’re the one who is always late.”
This type of response can then lead to conflict and increased aggression,
which in turn can lead to depression and low self esteem.
2250 Tips on Excellent Communication for Life
23. When we respond assertively to criticism we can identify the difference between
constructive and destructive criticism and respond appropriately
We can see that criticism about our behavior is not necessarily saying anything about us
as a person. We don’t get defensive, angry, blaming, hurt or run away. We stay calm and
accept the criticism without negative emotions.
2350 Tips on Excellent Communication for Life
24. As with other unassertive behaviors there is often some unhelpful
thinking underlying the behavior.
2450 Tips on Excellent Communication for Life
25. If I am criticized it means I am stupid.
They criticized me, they mustn’t like me anymore.
They are right, I did get it wrong, I can’t do anything
right. I’m a failure.
I can’t criticize them because then they won’t like
me.
How dare they tell me I’ve done something wrong.
They have no right.
They’re an idiot anyway. I’m not going to listen to
them.
If I criticize myself more and make it a joke then no-
one will know I am hurt
2550 Tips on Excellent Communication for Life
26. Here are some more helpful and assertive thoughts to challenge any
unhelpful thoughts you may have.
• If there is something wrong with what I’ve done it doesn’t mean anything about me as
a person. I need to separate the behavior from me.
2650 Tips on Excellent Communication for Life
27. • What can I learn from this criticism? Most criticism is probably based, at
least in part, on some truths. Criticism may appear negative. But, through
criticism we have the opportunity to learn and improve from their
suggestions. Always ask yourself “What can I learn?”
2750 Tips on Excellent Communication for Life
28. • I have the right to let someone know if their behavior has hurt, irritated or
upset me.
• Giving direct feedback can be loving and helpful.
2850 Tips on Excellent Communication for Life
29. We all need to be able to accept constructive criticism. Depending on the way the
criticism is presented to you, you can respond in a number of different ways.
1. Accept the criticism
2. Negative assertion.
3. Negative inquiry.
2950 Tips on Excellent Communication for Life
30. If the criticism is valid then just accept it without expressing guilt or other
negative emotions. Accept that you are not perfect and that the only way
we can learn is to make mistakes, see what we need to change and move
on. Thank the person for the feedback if appropriate.
3050 Tips on Excellent Communication for Life
31. This technique involves not only accepting the criticism but openly agreeing
with the criticism. This is used when a true criticism is made to you. The skill
involves calmly agreeing with the criticism of your negative qualities, and not
apologizing or letting yourself feel demolished.
3150 Tips on Excellent Communication for Life
32. For example, someone may say:
Criticism: “ Y our desk is very messy . You are very
disorganized” . Response: “Yes, it’s true, I’m not very tidy”.
3250 Tips on Excellent Communication for Life
33. The key to using negative assertion is self confidence and a belief that
you have the ability to change yourself if you wish. By agreeing with and
accepting criticism, if it is appropriate, you need not feel totally
demolished. This type of response can also diffuse situations.
3350 Tips on Excellent Communication for Life
34. Negative inquiry consists of requesting further, more specific
criticism. If someone criticizes you but you are not sure if the
criticism is valid or constructive you ask for more details.
3450 Tips on Excellent Communication for Life
35. For example:
Criticism: “You’ll find that difficult won’t you, because you are
shy?”
Reply: “In what ways do you think I’m shy?”
3550 Tips on Excellent Communication for Life
36. If the criticism is constructive, that information can be used
constructively and the general channel of communication will be
improved. If the criticism is manipulative or destructive then the
critic will be put on the spot.
3650 Tips on Excellent Communication for Life
37. Unfortunately we are all going to encounter destructive criticism at some
point in our lives. This can be more difficult to deal with than constructive
criticism. If we practice the techniques below, we can become skilled at
dealing with these difficult situations. As with all skills remember it will take
practice and some time to feel confident using these skills. You will notice
that some of the skills are the same as for dealing with constructive criticism.
3750 Tips on Excellent Communication for Life
38. 1. Disagree with criticism
2. Negative Enquiry.
3. Fogging aka Clouding aka Diffusion.
3850 Tips on Excellent Communication for Life
39. The first technique for dealing with destructive criticism is simply to
disagree with it. It is important that you remain calm and watch your non-
verbal behaviors including tone of voice as you do this as it is easy to
become aggressive or passive when disagreeing. Keep your voice
calm, your eye contact good.
3950 Tips on Excellent Communication for Life
40. Criticism: “You’re always late”.
Response: “No, I’m not always late. I may be
late occasionally, but I’m certainly not always
late”.
4050 Tips on Excellent Communication for Life
41. As described above, if someone makes a comment you may not be
sure if it is constructive or destructive criticism. We need to check
what is meant. If the criticism is destructive then we can either
disagree with it as above, or we can use one of the diffusion
techniques described on the next slides.
4150 Tips on Excellent Communication for Life
42. The three names above all refer to the same techniques. The idea
behind the techniques is to defuse a potentially aggressive or
difficult situation. You can use this style when a criticism is neither
constructive nor accurate.
4250 Tips on Excellent Communication for Life
43. The tendency for most people when presented with destructive
criticism is either to be passive and crumble or be aggressive and
fight back. Neither of these are good solutions.
4350 Tips on Excellent Communication for Life
44. Essentially what the techniques do is find some way of agreeing
with a small part of what an antagonist is saying. By staying calm
and refusing to be provoked or upset by the criticism you remove
its destructive power.
4450 Tips on Excellent Communication for Life
45. There are 3 types of diffusion: you can a)
agree in part,
agree in probability or
agree in principle.
4550 Tips on Excellent Communication for Life
46. Agreeing in part.
In this technique you find just one accurate part of what the critic is saying
and agree with that.
4650 Tips on Excellent Communication for Life
47. Criticism: “ You’ re not reliable. You forgot to pick up the kids, you let
the bills pile up until we could lose the roof over our head, and I can’t
ever count on you to be there when I need you. ”
Response: “You’re certainly right that I did forget to pick up the kids
last week after their swimming lesson.”
4750 Tips on Excellent Communication for Life
48. Criticism: "You haven’t got a job, you’re
completely unproductive.”
Response: “Yes, it’s true, I don’t have a job”.
4850 Tips on Excellent Communication for Life
49. With this technique you can still say something may be possible
even though you really think the chances are likely to be a million
to one. So you agree in probability.
4950 Tips on Excellent Communication for Life
50. Criticism: “If you don’t floss your teeth, you’ll get gum disease and
be sorry for the rest of your life.”
Response: “You’re right I may get gum disease.”
5050 Tips on Excellent Communication for Life
51. In this technique you acknowledge the person’s
logic without agreeing with what they say.
