Parallel Structure
PARALLEL STRUCTURE
Parallel Structure means using the same pattern of
words to show that two ideas or more have the
same level of importance.
EXAMPLES
1. Mike loves to ski, to snowboard, and to tub.
• Each activity that Mike loves to do is introduced with the word “to.” A
pattern is formed by doing this. Therefore, each activity has the same level
of importance and this sentence is considered to have Parallel Structure.
2. The hospital supervisor wrote his report quickly, accurately and thoroughly.
• The “ly” at the end of each adverb allows for a pattern to be seen.
Pattern=Parallel Structure
3. He waited in line, completed the form, and exited the building.
4. Henry took me to a dance and a movie.
5. I would rather eat cake than eat candy.
NON-PARALLEL EXAMPLES
1. Sam ran to the store, the bank, and decided to go by the
gym. (This sentence is NOT parallel because there is no
pattern between store, bank and gym.)
2. Every night Katie will read a book, singing a song, and
jump around.
3. We can go to the movies or out dancing.

Directions: Identify which of the following sentences are parallel

dishwasher for her kitchen.
