During his schooling at Trinity College, he met a woman named Adeline Fisher,
also a musician, who he became infatuated with, marrying her in October of 1897.
Ralph Vanaugh Williams was an organist for St. Barnabas church, which also
influenced his work in religious pieces. He resigned in 1899, choosing to compose
his own pieces and start his own career. For over a decade, Williams wrote
symphonies with different qualities and influences. This was cut short by World
War One and his enlistment as a Private in a medical unit. He was forty two at this
point, and yet still found a way to support his country in the war. Although Ralph s
work resumed in almost an unaffected manner, he did write Morning Heroes in
expressing the pain and sorrow of the war as he had experienced it. Williams
continued working on symphonies for plays such as The Pilgrim s Progress, a
religion based play. This was strange for an agnostic to do, and yet it was not
strange for Ralph Vaughan Williams, because he had done this before in his Mass
