In this slideshow, Jill Cirasella (Associate Librarian for Public Services and Scholarly Communication, Graduate Center, CUNY) explains the motivation for OA, describes the details of OA, and differentiates between publishing in open access journals (“gold” OA) and self-archiving works in OA repositories (“green” OA). There is an abundance of free online tools accessible to scientists and others that can be used for online networking, data sharing and measuring research impact. Despite this, few scientists know how these tools can be used or fail to take advantage of using them as an integrated pipeline to raise awareness of their research outputs. In this article, the authors describe their experiences with these tools and how they can make best use of them to make their scientific research generally more accessible, extending its reach beyond their own direct networks, and communicating their ideas to new audiences. These efforts have the potential to drive science by sparking new collaborations and interdisciplinary research projects that may lead to future publications, funding and commercial opportunities. The intent of this article is to: describe some of these freely accessible networking tools and affiliated products; demonstrate from our own experiences how they can be utilized effectively; and, inspire their adoption by new users for the benefit of science.

National Informatics Centre had established a subject repository in May 2005. It is meant for Medical and Allied Sciences and named as OpenMED@NIC . It has MeSH® based subject categorization and this makes it one of its own kind. Taking OpenMED@NIC as a case – this paper discusses key issues in establishing and maintaining an open access repository. Librarians and information science professionals can play active role in providing access and exposure to quality research and academic content generated in their institutions. Mature and standard open sources softwares are now available for setting up repositories. Libraries can install one of these on existing institutional or library servers to setup repositories. However to ensure better access and faster response time dedicated hardware and reliable connectivity would be required. Librarians and information science professional can play important role in exposing intellectual content produced by their organizations. They can take of various roles like – generating awareness among staff, researchers and students about benefits of self arching in institutional or subject repositories; training them in uploading their articles and other documents in such repositories; acting as meta-data editors and repositories managers. Establishing a repository, administrating and inviting authors to deposit their articles and other works in it is golden opportunity available to librarians and information science professionals. This opportunity should be grabbed with open hands.
“MBrace: Cloud Computing with Monads”, has been accepted for presentation at the Programming Languages and Operating Systems workshop, co-located with the SOSP 2013 conference.
Presented at the 10th annual Data Harmony Users Group meeting on Tuesday, February 11, 2014 by Kevin Boyack of SciTech Strategies. Shows how a comprehensive map of the scientific literature was used to visualize the PLOS thesaurus. The resulting visualization becomes a new visual template that can be used to 1) examine the thesaurus structure, content, and level of detail; and 2) show coverage and trends for various entities such as journals, institutions, and even individual authors.

Tony Epstein (Sir Michael Anthony Epstein, discoverer of the Epstein-Barr virus) once said to me something I’ve never forgotten:
“Research that is not published is wasted research.”
We live today in an era of open scholarship and open data, in which the Web is the primary means of communication. For many people, information that is not freely published on the Web might as well not exist. It is thus “wasted research”.
However, within academia, we also have to live in the legacy world of subscription-access journals and subscription-access citation indexes such as Web of Science and Scopus – freely available only to members of rich scholarly institutions like Oxford University that pays hundreds of thousands of dollars annually to obtain access for their members, not to the rest of the world including scholars in developing nations.
Today I will briefly discuss the five factors desirable for scholarly publications – the Five Stars of Online Journal Articles: peer review, open access, enriched content, available datasets and machine-readable metadata [1].
I will then discuss how bibliographic citations, which permit an author to give credit to another person's endeavours and integrate our independent acts of scholarship into a global knowledge network, are being freed from commercial restrictions by publication in the OpenCitations Corpus (http://opencitations.net), an open repository of scholarly citation data that others may build upon, enhance and reuse for any purpose [2, 3].

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.

Specifically, our aim is to achieve open access to the literature, whereby journal articles are freely available immediately upon publication their use is unrestricted, so that readers can download, print off, reanalyse, extract data and so on authors retain the copyright, and specifically the right to be appropriately cited papers are also deposited separately from the publisher in a public online archive (PMC)
This illustrates one aspect of the frustration with the existing system From 1986- 2002 journals increased in price over 200%, and library purchasing has been struggling just to maintain the status quo. Commercially STM pubishing is a huge success story. But many commentators have now asserted that this commercial success has been achieved at the expense of the scientific community, and only those in rich institutions can afford access. And that this position is unsustainable - we are heading for a meltdown.
In my penulimate slide I ’d just like to emphasize that the RCUK proposal resonates with many other related initiatives that are supporting open access internationally. In Europe there is the Berlin Declaration, which has been signed by major funders such as the DFG in Germany, INSERM, CNRS in France. Amongst other things the signatories support the kind of licensing that I mentioned in the previous slide. Redistribution for any purpose subject only to the condition of proper attribution The NIH has a proposal to increase access to the literature, and has invested a great deal in the establishment of PubMed Central, which provides powerful full text searching across published literature, and is committed to long term archiving, interoperability with other repositories, and public access. We strongly encourage the initiative to develop a similar full text archive in collaboration with the BL. Finally, more broadly still the UN ’s World Summit on the Information Society strongly endorses open access publishing.
As you know, the way in which OA journals are financed is by a publication fee, paid for by the same organizations that currently fund subscription journals. As stated in the RCUK draft policy, the costs of communication and dissemination are an integral part of the costs of research itself the challenge is to reroute the funds that currently support publishing towards researchers, so that they are able to pay publication fees.
Harold Varmus, Pat Brown and Mike Eisen established the Public Library of Science, initially as a sort of pressure group whose aim was to force publishers to change their ways.
Initially, they circulated an open letter urging publishers to deposit research literature in freely accessible databases, 6 months after publication. In many people ’s eyes this was seen as a naïve proposal, but it generated massive support in the community. The upshot was that some publishers did alter their policies - notably the society and non profit publishers - but the vast bulk of the literature remained accessible only to subscribers. The reason was simply that researchers had nowhere else to go with their papers - but the level of support indicated that it was the right time to launch journals based on a new business model - open access. And in December last year, Harold, Pat and Mike secured funding from the Moore foundation to the tune of 9 million dollars.
