English “P” and “B” sounds
Why should we
study these
sounds together?
We should study these sounds
together because ….
-both are produced in the front of the mouth,
…
and
- the tongue is in the same place.
But, there is one big
difference!
- The “B” Sound is voiced.
- The “P” sound is unvoiced.
So, what is the difference?
The vocal cords vibrate when you say voiced
sounds. You can hear a voiced B sound in
words such as "back" and "cab."
Voiced sounds
When making unvoiced sounds, the vocal
cords do not vibrate. Instead, we use a puff
of air to produce the sound. You can hear
the P sound in words such as "pack" and
"cap."
Unvoiced sounds
Say the following words with a piece of
paper in front of your mouth.
Let’s practice the voiced sounds!
Voiced b sounds
cab bought tub
bug bag bud
bottle brown book
boy black bid
What happened to the paper?
Again, say the following words with a piece
of paper in front of your mouth.
Let’s practice the unvoiced sounds!
Unvoiced P sounds
pie play pup
pick pop lip
pot plight cap
poor up put
