This document provides an overview of the theory of Riti in Sanskrit literary criticism. It discusses key theorists like Vamana, Dandin, Kuntaka, Mammata, and Anandavardhana and their categorizations of different Ritis or styles of expression. Riti refers to the proper organization and selection of language, words, and phrases in poetry. It handles the psychophonetic fitness of language for different themes and sentiments. Riti incorporates considerations of diction as well as being a broader theory of the craft and psychology of speech. In conclusion, Vamana defined Riti in a way that positioned the Vaidarbha style as exhibiting all literary qualities fully.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

• In simply Riti means Style, Method.
• According to Vamana,
• *" Riti or Mode of expression
constitute the Soul of poetry."
5. • Riti is the theory of language of literature.
• Through it is described for the first time in Bharata's
Natyasastra itself under the rubric of "Vrtti".
• It is Vamana who developed it into a theory, as the theory
of Visista padaracana riti- formation or arrangement of
marked infected constructions is Riti in
Kavyalamkarasutra 1.2.6.
• Two other words used for riti are -
• "Marga" and
• "Vrtti".

• Later Anandavardhana (ninth century A. D.)
distinguished these styles on the basis of the use of
particular kinds of compounds.
• Dandin uses the term marga and talks of two
Marga.
• Mammata designates the different modes as Vrttis.
10. • Vishwanatha considers proper organisation of language
as Riti words and phrases have to be properly selected
and organised in poetry and this is necessary for Rasas
and Bhavas.
• Riti/ Styles are defined by gunas (excellence) as well.
• Riti may be called 'diction', particularly when Guna/Dosa
become part of the discussion.
• Exa. Sahityadarpana, chepter 7.
• But Riti is much more than just diction.

•Basically it is a theory that handles
the psychophonetic fitness of
language for speakers, themes and
sentiments, and therefor becomes a
study of craftsmanship and
psychology of speech
12. Conclusion.
• Vamana defined Bharata and Dandin them away
suit his theory of rity and started that all the gunas
existed clearly and fully in the Vaidarbha Riti while
only a few of them existed in other Rities.
