Owl Research Papers
For many people, birds are seen to either be pets or wild animals. There is a massive amount of
species when it comes to learning about birds. One of the birds that I decided to do my research
paper on is Owls. The way I describe an owl is a type of bird that has a round head and large eyes,
but there are plenty more ways to describe an owl which is the purpose of this paper. An interesting
fact about owls is that they cannot move their eyes within their sockets like we can. In order to look
around, they have to move their entire head, which has a range of movement of about 270°. Which
many people find creepy and are scared of them. Owls usually fly and hunt at night, so are known to
be nocturnal birds. They eat mice, other small animals, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The smallest species is the tiny elf owl, measuring about 6 inches long, that live in western Mexico
and the Southwestern United States. The largest species is the great gray owl that lives deep in
woods of Alaska and Canada as far north as trees grow. Gray owls grow to about 30 inches long.
Now that I have provided general information about the owl it brings me to the part where I talk
about their role in the environment especially in Sequoia National Forest. First and Foremost, we
need to address how there is a couple type of species of owls in Sequoia National Forest. One of
them is the spotted owl which is considered to be the native resident in this forest. The other two
types of owls are the northern pygmy owl which is a small owl native to North and Central America.
There is also the western screech owl which is as well a small owl native to North and Central
America, and the females of the species are also larger than the males. In the article titled Population
Dynamics of Spotted Owls in the Sierra Nevada, California, we are presented with a study to see the
dynamics of how spotted owls are populated around the Sierra Nevada where Sequoia National
Forest is located at. The article conducts a meta–analysis of population data for 4

Barn Owl Research Paper
Birds have fascinated people for years. Whether it's their striking color, lovely songs, care for their
young, or ( most often ) their ability to fly. Not all birds however fall into each one of these
catergories. One species, for example, are the owls. Owls are not the brightest color and don't have
as lovely songs as a canary. They are different from many birds including other birds of prey. To
look at all these wonderful owls would take more than a few pages so we will look at one, the Barn
Owl. What is a barn owl? That is a simple question with a long answer. The story of the barn owl
has changed throughout the years. It is best to start in the beginning. In the very beginning God
created all living things including the barn owl. The first recorded time humans interacted with these
birds was in ancient times. During this time people thought owls in general were spirits who had
magical powers. These people either worshipped owls or feared them varying on their beliefs.
Ancient Europeans and Native Americans from Tennessee used to draw them on cave walls. Now
the barn owl's name makes sense. It is obviously an owl that lives in barns. What is an owl though?
It is an awfully peculiar word. This strange word comes from the Old English word ule. This word

They don't need speed though because their prey can't hear them coming. They can fly without
making a sound. Barn owls have soft fringes on the leading edges of their wing feathers. Scientists
believe this causes silent flight. Their bones arre very light. This is great for the barn owl because
when it flys it doesn't have a lot of weight to carry around. The barn owl only weighs just below or
above a pound. Their bones are of air pockets and crossbraced with solid shafts to make them
strong. Their are bigger than their body so they can carry both bird and prey together. (Below is a

The Powerful Owl Analysis
[is what I believe the purpose of the author in creating this poem= my thesis?] Christine Townend
explores the magical nature of the Powerful Owl and its protectiveness of its home against man.
[Overall tone and atmosphere] The owl describes the power and respected statues he holds in nature,
which is also known to humans. It then reiterates what seems to be dark powers it holds, (in the last
two stanzas?) directing it to humans, in order to protect its home from them. The Powerful Owl
establishes to the reader, humans, and the authority that he carries to create a fearful image. This is
seen in the first line " the night proceeds when I call for it"; the use of the imperative 'call' gives off
the dominance of the owl over nature. The word ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Anthropomorhism creates the sense the owl is directing it personally to the reader, to humans,
through this supreme voice aimed to frighten humans and its power. By the end of the poem the
Powerful Owl undermines its confidence and determination that " no house will rise where this
banksia stands except my own". The owl comments "no house will rise" the word 'no' emphasis its
confidence and the guard to ensure that no human house will be built at his home, the banksia. Any
images of the powerful owl as an evil is undermined " angels assemble under my wings". The
alliteration of 'a' brightens and lifts the mood which has been created in the rest of the poem
suggesting the dark atmosphere was only created to ward off the humans from destroying its home.
It is the angels which 'assemble under my [the owls] wing" not devils! Angles being an
representation of goodwill comes to support the Powerful Owl, reinforcing its as an animal whom
even angels support. This possibly suggests that the humans may be the devils, even to the extent a
Powerful Owl would require the support of angels. The underlying message of the poem form the
owl to the humans is revealed in the final stanzas, the tone created through the poem is used as a
protective barrier and to create awareness and fearful of the power the owl holds, to stop humans
from building

Similarities Between A Barred Owl And The History Teacher
The poems "A Barred Owl" and "the History Teacher" by Richard Wilbur and Billy Collins
respectively, depict two different scenarios where a child is lied to because an adult feels the need to
protect them. Both poets use different techniques in their rhyme scheme, and tone, to show that
while it may be appropriate to shield a child from a menacing owl, it is less so to skew the facts
from the world's past. When looking at "A Barred Owl", we see that a girl's parents are consoling
her in the middle of the night because she was frightened by an owl. The parents respond to this by
telling her that the owl is merely asking "who cooks for you?" (6). Wilbur justifies the parent's
actions by telling us that "Words, which can make our terrors bravely ... Show more content on

It gives the poem a more child–like feel to it, because of its simplicity. He also emphasizes this by
using a humorous tone when giving an explanation to the child, stating "All she heard was an odd
question from a forest bird" (4–5). This makes the child's fear of the owl seem irrational or
ridiculous. "The History Teacher" has the same premise as "A Barred Owl", where the teacher
changes the facts of history in order "to protect his students' innocence." (1). One example of this is
how he tells his students that the ice age was just the "chilly age... when everyone had to wear
sweaters."(3–4). Collins used events that involved death and destruction, to accentuate how big the
contrast between the teacher's explanations and reality is. It ends off with children leaving the
classroom to "torment the weak and the smart", while the teacher is oblivious to it all. With no
rhyme scheme present, the poem gives off a "chaotic" feeling, like the children who bully the other
kids on the playground. Collins also uses a facetious tone to describe the absurdity of the teacher's
interpretation of history. He portrays him as someone that can't be sympathized with and ignorant of
what happens around him. Collins' description of the children tormenting others while the teacher
"walked home past flower beds and white picket fences" shows a contrast between the two,
implying that either one or both of them are in worlds of their

The Sensorimotor Stage Of Piaget 's Developmental Stages
An Analysis of the Sensorimotor Stage of Piaget's Developmental Stages in the Context of the
"Levtex Baby Night Owl Musical Mobile"
Introduction:
This psychological study will define Piaget's Sensorimotor Stage in the context of a children's toy
entitled: "Levtex Baby Night Owl Musical Mobile." An analysis of the child's perception of this toy
will defined through the sensory impressions during the infantile stage. The sensorimotor stage is
the stage from birth to 2 years of age, which defines the way tht an infant, recognizes objects
through direct sensory impressions and motor activates. The "owl Mobile" is an example of the
visual and audio perceptions for an infant that would be good for this stage of development. The
owls represent ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Eventually, the child will begin to understand the visual objects and audio sounds that would be
located in the closest proximity. This aspects of Piaget's theory defines the important aspects of the
infant's perception of the world, which would begin at the 4 to 8 month stage:
Secondary circular reactions (4 to 8 months): Now babies' focus shifts from their own body to
objects in the world (secondary). They learn to control not just their body but other things as well
and will repeat random actions for their results (Ashford et al, 2010, 246).
In this context, the secondary world of the infant becomes more extensive, which results in the
movement of the mobile due to the stimulation of sight and sound. The physical sensation of kicking
the mobile becomes an interaction, which allows the child to explore their own bodily movements
and the object they are kicking,. This type of movement is crucial for understanding the impact of
sensory action and the development of motor skills in this process: "For instance, if a baby is lying
in a crib and looking at a mobile and the baby kicks its feet and the mobile moves (and the baby
kicks its feet and the mobile moves), the baby will kick its feet again to see whether the mobile will
move" (Ashford et al, 2010, 246). Surely, this defines the cognitive development of the infant during
this stage, since they are now making direct

Theme Of Birds In Macbeth
In William Shakespeare's Macbeth, Shakespeare often uses a motif of birds in order to foreshadow
future events and relationships. Shakespeare achieves this by likening two influential characters,
Macbeth and Macduff, to an owl and a crow, respectively, as well as using references to other types
of birds in order to set a tone.
The first major mention of birds occurs when Duncan and his entourage arrive at Dunsinane, about
which Banquo remarks that "The temple–haunting martlet... Hath made his pendant bed and
procreant cradle. / Where they most breed and haunt, I have observed / The air is delicate." (1.6.4–
10). Shakespeare includes this detail in order to illustrate Dunsinane in a time of peace, before it
becomes a beacon of violence and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to the Great Metaphysical Chain of Being, the falcon is the supreme bird who rules over
all of the others, with the owl ranking a few notches below it. The death of the falcon at the owl's
hand illustrates that the natural order of things has been disrupted, a situation that bears resemblance
to what has just occurred at Dunsinane, with king Duncan having been murdered by Macbeth, a man
who was beneath him in terms of power. This parallel between the upset in nature and the upset that
occurred at Dunsinane reinforces the idea that the owl symbolizes Macbeth. In the second scene of
the third act, after speaking with the murderers in order to plan Banquo's death, Macbeth pronounces
that "night's black agents to their preys do rouse." The phrase " night's black agents" refers to a
predator that hunts at night, which yet again is the owl, with Banquo likely being the metaphorical
prey. This is probably the most blatant of the hints that the owl symbolizes Macbeth, as Macbeth
makes this comment in full knowledge that Banquo will soon be murdered indirectly by his hand. In
that same scene, the crow is first mentioned when Macbeth remarks upon how "light thickens, and
the crow makes wing to the rooky wood" (3.2.50–51). This allusion to the crow is significant
because it is here that the parallels between the crow and Macduff begin to form. Just a few scenes
prior, in act two scene four,

Narrative Essay On The Night Killer
The air turned black all around me.
When I woke up I realized that I had been captured by "The Night Killer,". I was on my way to see
my friends when I stumbled and got mugged. Turns out I got to what looks to be a abandoned
warehouse of some kind. When I woke up there was a man about 6'4 and looked to be 240 pounds

"What do you want". "I will torture you without mercy so you will wish you never left your house,"
said The Night Killer. "I know what you do, you torture then kill people, I have seen it on the T.V."
Mycroft replied harshly. " And I will do the same to you," bragged The Night Killer. So there I was

sirens and I thought they were getting close but they were going on a high speed chase. I was happy
then quickly turned to sadness because I realized I would die in a ceiling if I could even get up there.
The next task that i wanted to accomplish was to get my body in the ceiling then use a piece of

New Mexican Culture In Bless Me, Ultima
Traditional New Mexican culture is the backbone of Bless Me, Ultima. Although there a lot of
qualities taken from the culture, readers will view the novel from multiple perspectives and separate
the realistic representations of the culture from fiction. Analyzing different elements from the novel
will demonstrate how the relationship between them brings the world of Bless Me, Ultima to life.
The elements of the llano, owl, and whirlwind will specifically examine Ultima and her role as a
curandera. These are just three of the elements, but all of them together are essential to Tony's
understanding of Ultima and his coming of age we see throughout the novel. In the beginning of the
novel, Antonio is with his siblings at night when they first ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

She teaches Antonio that "even the plants [have] a spirit" (Chapter 4). The llano is a sacred place for
her. The reader can see the importance of the care and handling of the plants is to Ultima because
she has a specific process of how to handle them. There is much history behind her practice and she
takes great pride in it. The llano is an extension of Ultima because as a curandera, she uses plants as
physical healing as well as spiritual healing. Ultima and Antonio have an unexplainable connection
through the whirlwind. When she places holds Antonio's hand, he feels "the four directions of the
llano met in [him], and the white sun shone on his [soul]." This is referencing an Aztec and
indigenous perspective as physical and spiritual markers in finding one's identity. Ultima is the
whirlwind helping him to grow and mature into a young adult. In this scene, the whirlwind is a
powerful and positive force, but in western cultures, winds are almost always seen as destructive
and evil. This is a common contrast readers see throughout the novel with Ultima. Each element, the
owl, llano, and whirlwind, are a projection of everything Ultima symbolizes. She is a guardian who
watches over her family and the town, protecting them from the evils that try to do harm. She is a
healer that provides physical and mental healing. She is a teacher that assists Antonio on his journey

In the beginning, the goddess of the sun looked upon the earth, and created animals to roam in the
rays of her sunshine. She blessed the land with animals like squirrels, to scurry and scatter the seeds
of the tall trees. She created the deer, to frolic in her sun bathed meadows, and graze upon the lush
grasses. The butterflies and bees she created to spread the sweet nectar of the plants, and cover her
green earth in vibrant colors. At last, the sun goddess was pleased with her work, and decided it was
time for her to rest. When she took her leave of day, the moon god emerged and took over, creating
the many creatures of the night. In contrast to the sun goddess, he created the owl and cricket, to
perch in the trees and bushes, and fill the night with sound. He created bats, to fly through the night
sky, and feed on insects, which he created to be their sustenance. While the moon god was busy
creating animals to fill the night, he made a simple, easy to miss mistake. When he created the

Owls In The Elizabethan Era
The Reversal Theme
As the dagger is extracted from Duncan's corpse, owls hoot as darkness conquers while the Divine
Order of society is overturned by Macbeth's bloody hands. In Shakespeare's Macbeth, a reversal in
the Divine Order occurs as unnatural events filled with destruction occur to leave Scotland in
turmoil. In the Elizabethan Era, the Divine Order categorizes society in a structured ranking system
in which God rules over everyone and under him is the King. The same follows for animals on a
lower scale, were the falcon is of a higher importance than the owl. When "[a] falcon, tow[e]ring in
her pride of place, /... [is] killed" () by an owl, the system that arranges lives witnesses an unnatural
displacement. Shakespeare uses this scenario ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Subsequently, those of a lower ranking are now going beyond their normal order and replacing the
higher ruler. On the other hand, owls symbolize death and darkness which therefore allows the
reader to infer the use of dark forces to overpower the leader. Moreover, Elizabethan England
believes that The Great Chain of Being is established by God and for someone to go against the
King is similar to going against God. After the murder, the characters could see "the heavens ...
troubled with man's act, / [and] [t]hreaten[ing]... [the] bloody stage... [as] [the] dark night strangles
the travelling lamp" (). One can infer that the darkness seen by the heavens disappointment with
Macbeth's action can be a representation of God's anger towards the betrayal of The Divine Order.
Following the overturn of social hierarchy, characters began to witness bizarre and unnatural events
throughout the night of the assassination. These disastrous hours containing "strange screams of
death, / [a]nd [is] prophesying with accents terrible / [o]f dire combustion and confused events... [as]

Symbolism In Bless Me Ultima
Rudolfo Anaya's novel, Bless Me, Ultima, depicts the struggle of a young boy, Antonio, to find his
path in life. As he tries to understand events of his waking hours, his dreams haunt his
unconsciousness. Through the interpretation of the symbolism of Antonio's dreams, the reader
develops a deeper understanding of Antonio's struggles. Throughout the novel, Antonio is learning
that Ultima's owl is also his protector. "Its song seemed to say that it had come to watch over us,"
(13). The song, Ultima's owl sings throughout each night, symbolizes Ultima's comforting presence
in Antonio's life and the protective power of her magic. Also, like Ultima, the owl is like a healer to
Antonio, when it sings through the night. "The owl had always been there. It sang to me the night
my brothers came home from the war, and in my dreams I sometimes saw it guiding their footsteps
as they stumbled through the dark streets of their distant cities," (272). Throughout the novel, the
owl of Ultima is not only Ultima's protector, but it is also Antonio's protector. Also, in Antonio's
mind as well, he could see it as a guiding spirit, because it provided a sense of hope and longing. All
in all, Antonio sees Ultima's owl as a protector and comforting presence throughout the novel.
The golden carp symbolizes the pagan religion which ties into christianity. At the river, Cico is
talking to Antonio and exclaims, "When the gods had turned the people into carp, the one kind god

Compare And Contrast A Barred Owl And The History Teacher
It's the dead of the night and the shrieking calls of a barred owl break the silence. A young child
bolts upright in bed with fear written across her innocent face. A teacher's class is about to be taught
a lesson on The Ice Age. The parents of the frightened child hush their daughter and say it was just
an inquisitive owl that scared her awake. The teacher pulls on a sweater and says, "Cavemen wore
these a lot in The Ice Age." The children in these scenarios are the victims of deceit. Both poems, "A
Barred Owl" and "The History Teacher" by Richard Wilbur and Billy Collins show the effects of not
exposing children to the truth early on in life. The parent and teacher mentioned are only concerned
about their children's innocence remaining intact, and they don't take into consideration how
sheltering them from the truth life holds will affect the children's minds. Wilbur and Collins ... Show

When the child was put to bed, the sky was probably not as dark as it was when she was woken by
the owl. Wilbur's words reveal this when the poem begins on a lighter note than the gruesome
ending. An owl has eyes that are much larger than those of the child mentioned. That being said, this
barred owl can clearly see the world and the life around him. The child cannot due to the fact that
her parents are preventing her from such exposure. Innocent minds deserve a healthy dose of reality
provided in the form of truthful explanations from the adults in their lives. The poem, "The History
Teacher" leans towards a more playful and bright tone than the tone Wilbur used in "A Barred Owl."
It almost sounds ironic that Collins titled the poem, "The History Teacher" because when spoken in
a sarcastic tone it sounds like he's mocking the teacher. He calls him a "history teacher" sarcastically
because the poet agrees with the fact that this teacher isn't actually teaching history. He's feeding the

Bird Imagery In Macbeth

Professor Fullmer

Macbeth Analysis Macbeth, written in the early 1600's by William Shakespeare, is an epic play that
follows the course of the twisted war general, Macbeth. Throughout Macbeth, Shakespeare uses bird
imagery to foreshadow events, better describe characters, and also give a detailed setting. Birds such
as the Eagle and falcon are powerful icons, while birds of the night such as the crow and the owl
give off a more eerie sense as predators. Their presence in the story is critical for a better
understanding of the plot. Upon Macbeth's triumphant victory over the forces of Macdonwald, King
Duncan asks for a report on the battle. A sergeant, who seems to find joy in the matter ... Show more

News of Duncan's murder quickly spreads around the castle, and servants blame the death of the
king on supernatural events that occur around the castle such as "A falcon, towering in her pride of
place, was by a mousing owl hawk's at ant kill'd". This supernatural occurrence of an owl hunting a
falcon, is parallel to Macbeth killing King Duncan. The falcon represents an honorable person who
was in his 'pride of place' or rather his throne, when it was stalked and killed by the malicious owl.
King Duncan was at peace in his throne and was the rightful heir to it, but due to the evilness and
greed in the hearts of both Sir & Lady Macbeth he was killed. In this instance, Duncan is the noble

Differences Between Diurnal And Nocturnal Primates
I chose to write my paper on the differences between diurnal and nocturnal primates. I chose this
topic because I thought it sounded interesting. I also chose it because I have horrible night vision
and have trouble driving at night, so I thought it would be cool to learn how certain primates live in
darkness and how their eyes work. This topic is relevant to biological anthropology because we
learned about all different types of primates throughout the course and their characteristics
including: social behaviors, diets, nocturnal vs. diurnal, and many other aspects of primate life. We
didn't get to go into detail about many of the primates and see the differences in nocturnal versus
diurnal. In my paper I decided to key in on two specific animals, the owl money and brown lemur. I
did this because I wanted to get to know more about each animal and the owl monkey has a very
unique story. I also chose to narrow in on the main difference between all diurnal and nocturnal
animals and that is the eyes. In my paper I will talk about the behavioral differences between the owl
monkey and brown lemur (I will also go into some detail about each of the primates, because I
thought they both were fascinating), the differences in the eyes, and also just some other general
facts about diurnal and nocturnal primates. The first thing I'm going to talk about is the differences
in the eyes of nocturnal and diurnal primates. One thing that is very fascinating to me is that many

Analysis Of The Movie ' Costumed Heroes ' And ' The Night...
Watchmen takes place in an alternate America of 1985, and thanks to the Keene Act of 1977
"costumed heroes" are no longer allowed to save the lives of distressed civilians, help those in
need...etc. Well they're at least not allowed to do it in costumes under the name of "The Night Owl",
"Ozymandias", "Hooded Justice", "The Comedian", and the first character introduced Rorschach.
Rorschach is the only one left of the masked vigilantes(illegally or not employed by the
government) , and compared to the other characters in the story is very complex, and very different
from everyone else. Rorschach wasn't always Rorschach he was born Walter Joseph Kovacs.
Rorschach didn't have an easy life growing up, his mother was prostitute, and didn't even know who
his father was. His mother was abusive, he was raised in poverty, and as a child he got into an
extremely violent fight with two bullies in school. When the situation and his home life were
investigated he was taken into a shelter or "Home for Problem Children". He had a couple of
hobbies as a child that got him into the physical state he is now, and eventually started working at a
dress shop. Rorschach then made a mask out of a dress that was rejected by its owner. Rorschach
was reading a news article two years later about the rape and murder of a young girl, and he wanted
to do something about it. Rorschach then began fighting crime under the mask vigilante named
"Rorschach". Rorschach believes that people are either good, or

Into The Darkness Symbolism
After reading the poem, "Into the darkness," I have decided to focus on symbolism, archetypes, and
myths when referring to the owl and darkness. After researching I have found out that an owl
operates mainly late at night or all night. The author stated that "The great–horned owl calls to me
each night from the deep, tree–shadows nearby, and I shape–shift in the darkness, and shed human
form, to fly". When the owl shows up in your life, pay attention to the winds of change. Perhaps the
author is about to leave some old habits, a situation no longer serves or perhaps bring something
new in your life. When referring to symbolism there are several myths about owls that have been
around for years. For example "In Indian American traditions, the

Night Owls Research Paper
I know it seems easy to be late to class, but for some it's not. Some people were born morning
people and some were born night owls. Half of the night owls are able to get 3–4 hours of sleep and
still be in class on time and function like a normal person. The other half walk around looking half
dead or like zombies trying to figure out if they're even in the right class. This paper isn't about the
night owls who already know how to be late to class. This is for the people who just want to be lazy
one day and be late to class for the 1st time in their life.
The night before, you have to do the things a lazy person or night owl does. That mostly involves
doing things you know you shouldn't be doing, but doing them anyway because you never know ...

Now that you late, you don't hurry up and run to class. You might as well be extra late or just even
skip the class all together. You then take a shower, eat breakfast and even drive or walk slow to
school because you're so late it won't even matter. You finally made it to class with only 5 minutes
left. What now? You go hide in the bathroom until the bell ring. You go to the teacher of the class
you just missed and explain that it won't happen again and that you even have the homework done.
Due to this being the 1st class you ever missed, the teacher don't even care and tell you not to worry
about a thing. Who knew it was that easy?
Now that you have learned to not be in class on time (or at all), you will feel a little more at ease
about doing it in the future. Maybe you're the morning person who gets tired of being on a constant
schedule so you want to relax one night without having to worry about the early class in the
morning. You could even be a night owl trying to change your ways and you see the things in this
text that you do and might want to change. As long as it don't become an everyday thing, be as late
as you want to

The Corruption Of Nature Revealed In Shakespeare's Macbeth
People can disrupt nature and nature will get back at you. Macbeth is a story written by Shakespeare
about a young man who has the ambition to become king no matter the cost. Macbeth's first step
was becoming the Thane. Macbeth and his best friend Banquo went to see the three weird sisters,
witches, and they are told their prophecies. Macbeth's was that he would be the Thane and then the
king. While Banquo's was that his lineage would be royalty for generations. Macbeth told his wife
who then gets the idea to go a step further and become the king and queen of the country. They plan
to invite the current king to their home and assassinate him. Once the king came Lady Macbeth
poisoned the king and made his guards drunk enough to pass out on their own. Macbeth then killed
the king with a dagger and was able to put the blame on the deceased king's guards. Macbeth

Types of birds convey the theme that the disruption of natural flow can cause unforeseen deaths and

How Does Alan Moore Use Names In Watchmen
Alan Moore's Watchmen uses names to deconstruct various characters in the graphic novel. Laurie's,
Dan's, Kovacs', Adrian's, and Jon's multiple names provide insight into their personalities and roles
in the novel. Laurie Juspeczyk is the daughter of Sally Jupiter, formally known as Silk Spectre. The
name Laurie is derived from the Latin name "Laurel". In Ancient Rome, leaves of laurel trees are
used to create garlands for victors and champions. Laurie Juspeczyk's name directly relates to her
character and personality as somewhat of a sidekick. While trying to convince Jon to save the world
from destruction she says, "I mean, ordinary people, right? All the things that happen to
them...Doesn't that move you more than a bunch of rubble" (Moore, 16). Laurie doesn't take credit,
but is ultimately the driving force behind the heroes' actions. When Dan loses confidence in himself
without his costume, Laurie tells him to "get the rest of your suit on while I go get dressed" (Moore,
20). Laurie's assertiveness, which her name confirms, leads to saving several civilians and Dan
living up to his own expectations for Night Owl. "She is "the garland" of champions–always around,
glorifying the heroes. Daniel Dreiberg's, also known as Night Owl's, names reveal opposing

Misconceptions Of Luciferianism
Despite the negative connotations that are often associated with the owl during the medieval period,
the Aberdeen Bestiary portrays the owl in a positive manner. The night owl or noctua is said to
signify Christ. It makes this connection by using the statement; "Christ loves the darkness of night
because he does not want sinners – who are represented by darkness– to die but to be converted and
live" (Aberdeen Bestiary). The Bestiary continues by stating, "[Christ] He flees from the light, in the
sense that he does not look for the glory of human praise" (Aberdeen Bestiary). The lesson from this
passage is that Christ did not actively seek the light similar to how owls avoid the light. That the

As an ancient Ammonite god, Moloch was worshiped by the Canaanites, Phoenicians, and other
cultures in North Africa. The Phoenicians and Canaanites would require sexual rituals as well as an
expiatory child sacrifice by the parents. These sacrifices have typically been understood to mean
burning a child alive. Specifically, the idols of Moloch were giant statues of a man with a bull's head
where idol had a hole in the abdomen. A fire was lit around the statue and the baby was placed in the
hole so that it could be ritually sacrificed. It was believed that Moloch would provide prosperity for
the family and future children. While this practice has been eliminated, a similar practice has

Similarities Between A Barred Owl And The History Teacher
"A Barred Owl" and "The History Teacher" The poems "A Barred Owl" and "the History Teacher"
by Richard Wilbur and Billy Collins respectively, depict two different scenarios in which an adult
deceives a child about something in the world. "A Barred Owl" has parents who lie to their child
about an owl who waked her in the night, while "The History Teacher" tells us about a man who
tries to protect his students by deceiving them. Techniques are used by both poets to convey a
particular tone. While Wilbur's poem is more innocent in that it tries to soothe a child from the
terrors of the darkness, Collins' poem is about someone trying protect something that is already
gone––in this case, the children's innocence. In "A Barred Owl", a girl's parents are consoling her in
the middle of the night because an owl had frightened her. The parents respond to her fear by telling
her that the owl is merely asking "who cooks for you?" Wilbur conveys this by using a humorous
tone saying that "[It] was an odd question from a forest bird..." using the word "bird" instead of owl.
This makes the child have a more generalized picture of what she is hearing; a bird instead of a
horrid creature from the night. It also ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

What Is Hieronymus Bosch Owls
For my final project I chose Hieronymus Bosch, more specifically I decided to focus on his use of
owls in his paintings. Bosch was a very interesting dude and his paintings are weird. People who
have minds like Bosch fascinate me. My mind doesn't work like that and I find it very interesting
and I can't even imagine what kinds of conversations Bosch had with his fellow artist at the time.
Another reason why I chose to look into the owls is because I love owls. I always knew that owls
symbolize with wisdom and "knowledge and erudition that can see through obscurity (and as the
bird of Athena/Minerva, the goddess of wisdom), the owl appears frequently in the emblems of
scholarly publishing houses and book stores" (Biedermann, 250) but Bosch gives his owls different
symbolic meanings. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It has many symbols but mainly owls and nakedness. Before Bosch was even alive and working,
owl images, motifs, and drawings had already became symbolic. Owl motifs were seen in
Babylonian and Egyptian reliefs, Ancient Greek and later in Roman art, according to Jelena
Melnikova–Grigorjeva, Olga Bogdanova. In Christianity, on one hand, owl depicted as Christ, and
on the other hand, owl depicted as sinners, "With their nocturnal habits, solitude, silent flight, and
plaintive cry, owls came to symbolize a turning away from spiritual light – or, conversely, Jesus
Christ in the "night of suffering and death" (Biedermann, 250). It seems like owls have negative
associations. Even Renaissance artists associate owls with death, delusion, and temptation, although
sometimes that temptation is for knowledge and

Analysis Of Isbell And Wright's Night Watch On The Amazon
Introduction Isbell and Wright's articles both focus on monkey species and their native
environments, Africa for Isbell's (1994) vervet Old World monkey and South America, Peru area, for
Wright's (1994) owl and titis monkeys. The articles main focus is the relationship between these
monkeys and their natural predators. Focusing on how the predator aspect of their lives is
determined by their environment and adaptations they make to ensure survival. Isbell's Vervets Year
of Doom focuses more on the adaptations that was forced upon the vervets' because of their
changing environment, the death of fever trees. While Wright's Night Watch on the Amazon
focusses more on how the primates way of life affects their relationship with predators and the
likelihood of attacks. Both articles have similar aspects however the species way of life, specifically
their environment and sleep schedule, are quite different as well as the authors way of observing and
studying the primates within their habitats. Summarize: Within Lynne Isbell's article The Vervets '

population within its natural environment in Amboseli Nation Park, Kenya (Isbell, 1994, p. 128).

Owls Vs Risers
The Merriam Webster defines sleep as the natural periodic suspension of consciousness during
which the powers of the body are restored. Although many people don't recognize the value of sleep,
it is a very essential part of life. There are many differences between a night owl and an early riser.
Research proves that there are many benefits as well as negative results to both sleeping habits.
Unfortunately, night owls are more likely to develop diabetes and other health issues like reduced
muscles mass. In contrast, early risers are destined to live a long healthy life. It is also proven to
help sustain a healthier diet when you wake up early. On the other hand night owls crave more food,

Night Owl Analysis
Bay Area locals, Guy Fox, deliver a feel good album, Night Owl, that could possibly sum up the
direction of this past summer's sound, alongside with a good look into the future of new music, as
the seasons change. Indie–rockers – Peter Granquist (vocals, drums, percussion), Nate Witherbee
(vocals, synthesizer, guitar, piano), Greg Waters (guitar, saxophones, synthesizer) and Charlie
Moore (vocals, bass, synthesizer, organ) –experiment with synths, sweet melodies, and a distinct
tone that has the ability to immortalize feelings flawlessly. Night Owl offers different moods and
feelings throughout the album, orchestrated by playing with a simple recipe of sounds, presented in
a new light each time, such as the first two tracks. "Antique Furniture" sets the tone and has the right
amount of horns, and funky attitude, that is softened with a persistent synth. One of the greatest
intros on the album would be for the track, "Mind's Eyes." This track is an instant mood lifter, that
gets you moving with a catchy guitar riff, and a solid bass line that gives the song support. Based on
the guitar riff, the ideal direction of the song would be of a higher, and lighter tempo, which throws
one off by the time the vocals come to play, but change the direction down a calming melodious
path; something I wouldn't change. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Philadelphia Audubon Inquiry Summary
Scott Weidensaul is an internationally known ornithologist, meaning he knows quite a lot about
birds (in particular – owls). He has not only been the author of many books but the writer for
sources such as the Philadelphia Inquirer and Smithsonian Magazine. Weidensaul has also directed
several research efforts and has even been nominated for the Pulitzer prize.
He spoke at an Audubon Event held here at Lyco in November. I originally went to the event as
extra credit for a biology class but ended up learning a lot and really enjoying the lecture.
Before the event began, visitors were able to interact with two owls in the lobby outside the lecture
hall. The smaller of the two, named Bumper, was blind due to being hit by a car. The larger one ...

The entire lecture hall where we normally have bio classes was full and some people were even
standing or using extra chairs. The second thing that surprised me was that someone could talk about
owls for so long. It really was fascinating that Mr. Weidensaul knew so much about them.
He started his talk by describing owls as "souls of the night." he explained that no culture is
indifferent to owls, some revere them and others fear them. There have been owls in cave drawings,
art, and literature throughout history.
Another interesting part of the talk was Weidensaul's description of how scientists think of owls. At
first, it was believed that owls were related to night birds and predators but with better technology,
scientists were able to sequence more genomes and show that the closest relatives to owls are in fact
mouse birds. It was also found that barn owls split from typical owls, the other family, around 45
million years ago.
I also found it interesting that the ear tufts on owls are just used for camo, not hearing. Their actual
"ears" are just openings in the skull. These openings are often asymmetrical on the owls head! For
example, the one on the right points upward and the one on the left points downward. This is so the
owl can locate soft sounds without moving its

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Owls
In my early childhood my parents always made me go to bed at 9 PM. They believed (wordiness) in
a common thought that the earlier you go to sleep, the easier it will be to wake up in the morning. It
doesn't matter how many times I refused, I was still obliged to do that. As time passed, it became
impossible for me to be in bed even by 11 PM. At this particular time, so to say, I become as
mentally active as never during the daytime and all tasks seem to be easier to solve. These types of
people who prefer staying awake late at night are called owls. Moreover, there is a different type of
people who prefer doing everything when the sun is coming up. They are called larks. What are

This is not a surprise, actually, because night time means that people go to pubs or clubs.
Consequently, the desire to consume alcohol and nicotine is much higher and is less resistible.
Researchers who conducted the same studies, created a parallel between the alcohol abuse as well as
mental disorders with the novelty–seeking. Novelty–seeking, according to Wikipedia, "is a
personality trait associated with exploratory activity in response to novel stimulation, impulsive
decision making, extravagance in approach to reward cues, and quick loss of temper and avoidance
of frustration." The same research showed that larks tend to be more proactive, agreeable and stable
than owls. Besides, larks are less like to be procrastinators. The study conducted by a researcher
named Joseph Ferrari showed that larks procrastinate less because they don't leave all the tasks till
night. Owls, on the contrary, do this and such a habit may lead to job troubles. A person is expected
to do his/her job during the daytime and if a person can't do it, the employer starts hesitating
whether to keep such a worker at the office or not. Because there are so many differences between
there 2 types of people, it's almost impossible to form any similarities. However, I managed to come
up with one connection between owls and larks. Both morning and evening types of people are

Theme Of Birds In Macbeth
The play Macbeth, written in 1606 by William Shakespeare, revolves around an overambitious
thane who demonstrates impulsive and avaricious actions in order to obtain his desired power.
Shakespeare wrote this play to remove suspicion of his involvement in the Gunpowder Plot by
praising King James I and condemning the revolutionaries, which he hoped would lead the King to
believing his reverence and loyalty toward him. In Macbeth, birds are a recurring motif; they
continually have different meanings, but all represent the foreshadowing of events of murder, the
actual occurrences of the murders, or the aftereffects the murders have on the people of Scotland.
Birds initially symbolized the foreshadowing of Duncan's murder due to their specific
characteristics. For example, Duncan said, "This guest of summer/the temple–haunting martlet, does
approve/by his loved mansionry, that the heaven's breath/smells wooingly here..." (1.5.3–10), which
evokes imagery of wholesomeness, safety and splendor outside of the Macbeth castle because this
bird migrates to Scotland, and is a representation of the summer, as that is their time of travel. This
is foreshadowing because the birds' presence and location conveys the contrast of the reality inside
of the castle, which has evil, darkness, and malice, as the Macbeths are plotting the murder of
Duncan. The idealization of the outdoors shows the opposition of the inside and reveals that there is
more than one atmosphere on this property. Birds

Symbols And Motifs In Macbeth
In the drama Macbeth by William Shakespeare, Shakespeare uses symbols and motifs to
demonstrate how Macbeth's ambition leads him to corruption. For example, immediately after Lady
Macbeth has set up the murder of King Duncan and is relishing her triumph, she declares, "Hark!
Peace! / It was the owl that shriek'd, the fatal bellman, / Which gives the stern'st good–night"
(II.ii.2–4). This is an example of the symbol of animal imagery as Lady Macbeth describes the
shriek of the owl, which represents of the motif of death for the reason that the owl's hoot
superstitiously foretells fatality. Additionally, this ties into the idea that ambition leads to corruption
as in this scenario, the hoot of the owl signifies Duncan's murder, committed by Macbeth

Barn Owls Appearance Tyto tiabla, commonly known as barn owls, have heart–shaped faces with
low profile bodies. They are typically 34 centimeters wide by 40 centimeters high, and weigh about

equivalent if divided in half. They have very sharp talons and large wing spans. When combined
with their short tails, barn owls have a unique, floating flying style. Barn owls are light brown with
various black and white spots. However, female barn owls are more reddish in color than the males
and have more spots on their chests. Barn owls have dark eyes that are well–equipped for low light

rabbits. They will also eat small birds, but that is very rare. Barn owls swallow their prey whole –
fur, skin, bones and meat. They cannot digest all this material, so twice a day they regurgitate, or
cough up, pellets of what they cannot process. The amount of food barn owls hunt for is based on
whether or not they have offspring. Barn owls hunt for food in the same areas as some of their

Owl Research Papers

  • 1. Owl Research Papers For many people, birds are seen to either be pets or wild animals. There is a massive amount of species when it comes to learning about birds. One of the birds that I decided to do my research paper on is Owls. The way I describe an owl is a type of bird that has a round head and large eyes, but there are plenty more ways to describe an owl which is the purpose of this paper. An interesting fact about owls is that they cannot move their eyes within their sockets like we can. In order to look around, they have to move their entire head, which has a range of movement of about 270°. Which many people find creepy and are scared of them. Owls usually fly and hunt at night, so are known to be nocturnal birds. They eat mice, other small animals, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The smallest species is the tiny elf owl, measuring about 6 inches long, that live in western Mexico and the Southwestern United States. The largest species is the great gray owl that lives deep in woods of Alaska and Canada as far north as trees grow. Gray owls grow to about 30 inches long. Now that I have provided general information about the owl it brings me to the part where I talk about their role in the environment especially in Sequoia National Forest. First and Foremost, we need to address how there is a couple type of species of owls in Sequoia National Forest. One of them is the spotted owl which is considered to be the native resident in this forest. The other two types of owls are the northern pygmy owl which is a small owl native to North and Central America. There is also the western screech owl which is as well a small owl native to North and Central America, and the females of the species are also larger than the males. In the article titled Population Dynamics of Spotted Owls in the Sierra Nevada, California, we are presented with a study to see the dynamics of how spotted owls are populated around the Sierra Nevada where Sequoia National Forest is located at. • 3. Barn Owl Research Paper Birds have fascinated people for years. Whether it's their striking color, lovely songs, care for their young, or ( most often ) their ability to fly. Not all birds however fall into each one of these catergories. One species, for example, are the owls. Owls are not the brightest color and don't have as lovely songs as a canary. They are different from many birds including other birds of prey. To look at all these wonderful owls would take more than a few pages so we will look at one, the Barn Owl. What is a barn owl? That is a simple question with a long answer. The story of the barn owl has changed throughout the years. It is best to start in the beginning. In the very beginning God created all living things including the barn owl. The first recorded time humans interacted with these birds was in ancient times. During this time people thought owls in general were spirits who had magical powers. These people either worshipped owls or feared them varying on their beliefs. Ancient Europeans and Native Americans from Tennessee used to draw them on cave walls. Now the barn owl's name makes sense. It is obviously an owl that lives in barns. What is an owl though? It is an awfully peculiar word. This strange word comes from the Old English word ule. This word might be even more ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They don't need speed though because their prey can't hear them coming. They can fly without making a sound. Barn owls have soft fringes on the leading edges of their wing feathers. Scientists believe this causes silent flight. Their bones arre very light. This is great for the barn owl because when it flys it doesn't have a lot of weight to carry around. The barn owl only weighs just below or above a pound. Their bones are of air pockets and crossbraced with solid shafts to make them strong. Their are bigger than their body so they can carry both bird and prey together. (Below is a skeleton of a barn ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Powerful Owl Analysis [is what I believe the purpose of the author in creating this poem= my thesis?] Christine Townend explores the magical nature of the Powerful Owl and its protectiveness of its home against man. [Overall tone and atmosphere] The owl describes the power and respected statues he holds in nature, which is also known to humans. It then reiterates what seems to be dark powers it holds, (in the last two stanzas?) directing it to humans, in order to protect its home from them. The Powerful Owl establishes to the reader, humans, and the authority that he carries to create a fearful image. This is seen in the first line " the night proceeds when I call for it"; the use of the imperative 'call' gives off the dominance of the owl over nature. The word ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Anthropomorhism creates the sense the owl is directing it personally to the reader, to humans, through this supreme voice aimed to frighten humans and its power. By the end of the poem the Powerful Owl undermines its confidence and determination that " no house will rise where this banksia stands except my own". The owl comments "no house will rise" the word 'no' emphasis its confidence and the guard to ensure that no human house will be built at his home, the banksia. Any images of the powerful owl as an evil is undermined " angels assemble under my wings". The alliteration of 'a' brightens and lifts the mood which has been created in the rest of the poem suggesting the dark atmosphere was only created to ward off the humans from destroying its home. It is the angels which 'assemble under my [the owls] wing" not devils! Angles being an representation of goodwill comes to support the Powerful Owl, reinforcing its as an animal whom even angels support. This possibly suggests that the humans may be the devils, even to the extent a Powerful Owl would require the support of angels. The underlying message of the poem form the owl to the humans is revealed in the final stanzas, the tone created through the poem is used as a protective barrier and to create awareness and fearful of the power the owl holds, to stop humans from building ... • 7. Similarities Between A Barred Owl And The History Teacher The poems "A Barred Owl" and "the History Teacher" by Richard Wilbur and Billy Collins respectively, depict two different scenarios where a child is lied to because an adult feels the need to protect them. Both poets use different techniques in their rhyme scheme, and tone, to show that while it may be appropriate to shield a child from a menacing owl, it is less so to skew the facts from the world's past. When looking at "A Barred Owl", we see that a girl's parents are consoling her in the middle of the night because she was frightened by an owl. The parents respond to this by telling her that the owl is merely asking "who cooks for you?" (6). Wilbur justifies the parent's actions by telling us that "Words, which can make our terrors bravely ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It gives the poem a more child–like feel to it, because of its simplicity. He also emphasizes this by using a humorous tone when giving an explanation to the child, stating "All she heard was an odd question from a forest bird" (4–5). This makes the child's fear of the owl seem irrational or ridiculous. "The History Teacher" has the same premise as "A Barred Owl", where the teacher changes the facts of history in order "to protect his students' innocence." (1). One example of this is how he tells his students that the ice age was just the "chilly age... when everyone had to wear sweaters."(3–4). Collins used events that involved death and destruction, to accentuate how big the contrast between the teacher's explanations and reality is. It ends off with children leaving the classroom to "torment the weak and the smart", while the teacher is oblivious to it all. With no rhyme scheme present, the poem gives off a "chaotic" feeling, like the children who bully the other kids on the playground. Collins also uses a facetious tone to describe the absurdity of the teacher's interpretation of history. He portrays him as someone that can't be sympathized with and ignorant of what happens around him. Collins' description of the children tormenting others while the teacher "walked home past flower beds and white picket fences" shows a contrast between the two, implying that either one or both of them are in worlds of their ... The Sensorimotor Stage Of Piaget 's Developmental Stages An Analysis of the Sensorimotor Stage of Piaget's Developmental Stages in the Context of the "Levtex Baby Night Owl Musical Mobile" Introduction: This psychological study will define Piaget's Sensorimotor Stage in the context of a children's toy entitled: "Levtex Baby Night Owl Musical Mobile." An analysis of the child's perception of this toy will defined through the sensory impressions during the infantile stage. The sensorimotor stage is the stage from birth to 2 years of age, which defines the way tht an infant, recognizes objects through direct sensory impressions and motor activates. Eventually, the child will begin to understand the visual objects and audio sounds that would be located in the closest proximity. This aspects of Piaget's theory defines the important aspects of the infant's perception of the world, which would begin at the 4 to 8 month stage: Secondary circular reactions (4 to 8 months): Now babies' focus shifts from their own body to objects in the world (secondary). They learn to control not just their body but other things as well and will repeat random actions for their results (Ashford et al, 2010, 246). In this context, the secondary world of the infant becomes more extensive, which results in the movement of the mobile due to the stimulation of sight and sound. The physical sensation of kicking the mobile becomes an interaction, which allows the child to explore their own bodily movements and the object they are kicking,. This type of movement is crucial for understanding the impact of sensory action and the development of motor skills in this process: "For instance, if a baby is lying in a crib and looking at a mobile and the baby kicks its feet and the mobile moves (and the baby kicks its feet and the mobile moves), the baby will kick its feet again to see whether the mobile will move" (Ashford et al, 2010, 246). • 13. Theme Of Birds In Macbeth In William Shakespeare's Macbeth, Shakespeare often uses a motif of birds in order to foreshadow future events and relationships. Shakespeare achieves this by likening two influential characters, Macbeth and Macduff, to an owl and a crow, respectively, as well as using references to other types of birds in order to set a tone. The first major mention of birds occurs when Duncan and his entourage arrive at Dunsinane, about which Banquo remarks that "The temple–haunting martlet... Hath made his pendant bed and procreant cradle. / Where they most breed and haunt, I have observed / The air is delicate." (1.6.4– 10). Shakespeare includes this detail in order to illustrate Dunsinane in a time of peace, before it becomes a beacon of violence and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to the Great Metaphysical Chain of Being, the falcon is the supreme bird who rules over all of the others, with the owl ranking a few notches below it. The death of the falcon at the owl's hand illustrates that the natural order of things has been disrupted, a situation that bears resemblance to what has just occurred at Dunsinane, with king Duncan having been murdered by Macbeth, a man who was beneath him in terms of power. This parallel between the upset in nature and the upset that occurred at Dunsinane reinforces the idea that the owl symbolizes Macbeth. In the second scene of the third act, after speaking with the murderers in order to plan Banquo's death, Macbeth pronounces that "night's black agents to their preys do rouse." The phrase " night's black agents" refers to a predator that hunts at night, which yet again is the owl, with Banquo likely being the metaphorical prey. This is probably the most blatant of the hints that the owl symbolizes Macbeth, as Macbeth makes this comment in full knowledge that Banquo will soon be murdered indirectly by his hand. In that same scene, the crow is first mentioned when Macbeth remarks upon how "light thickens, and the crow makes wing to the rooky wood" (3.2.50–51). This allusion to the crow is significant because it is here that the parallels between the crow and Macduff begin to form. Just a few scenes prior, in act two scene four, ... Although there a lot of qualities taken from the culture, readers will view the novel from multiple perspectives and separate the realistic representations of the culture from fiction. The elements of the llano, owl, and whirlwind will specifically examine Ultima and her role as a curandera. The llano is an extension of Ultima because as a curandera, she uses plants as physical healing as well as spiritual healing. Ultima and Antonio have an unexplainable connection through the whirlwind. When she places holds Antonio's hand, he feels "the four directions of the llano met in [him], and the white sun shone on his [soul]." This is referencing an Aztec and indigenous perspective as physical and spiritual markers in finding one's identity. Ultima is the whirlwind helping him to grow and mature into a young adult. In this scene, the whirlwind is a powerful and positive force, but in western cultures, winds are almost always seen as destructive and evil. This is a common contrast readers see throughout the novel with Ultima. Each element, the owl, llano, and whirlwind, are a projection of everything Ultima symbolizes. • 19. Greek Mythology Research Paper In the beginning, the goddess of the sun looked upon the earth, and created animals to roam in the rays of her sunshine. She blessed the land with animals like squirrels, to scurry and scatter the seeds of the tall trees. She created the deer, to frolic in her sun bathed meadows, and graze upon the lush grasses. The butterflies and bees she created to spread the sweet nectar of the plants, and cover her green earth in vibrant colors. At last, the sun goddess was pleased with her work, and decided it was time for her to rest. When she took her leave of day, the moon god emerged and took over, creating the many creatures of the night. In contrast to the sun goddess, he created the owl and cricket, to perch in the trees and bushes, and fill the night with sound. He created bats, to fly through the night sky, and feed on insects, which he created to be their sustenance. While the moon god was busy creating animals to fill the night, he made a simple, easy to miss mistake. Owls In The Elizabethan Era The Reversal Theme As the dagger is extracted from Duncan's corpse, owls hoot as darkness conquers while the Divine Order of society is overturned by Macbeth's bloody hands. In Shakespeare's Macbeth, a reversal in the Divine Order occurs as unnatural events filled with destruction occur to leave Scotland in turmoil. In the Elizabethan Era, the Divine Order categorizes society in a structured ranking system in which God rules over everyone and under him is the King. The same follows for animals on a lower scale, were the falcon is of a higher importance than the owl. When "[a] falcon, tow[e]ring in her pride of place, /... As he tries to understand events of his waking hours, his dreams haunt his unconsciousness. Through the interpretation of the symbolism of Antonio's dreams, the reader develops a deeper understanding of Antonio's struggles. Throughout the novel, Antonio is learning that Ultima's owl is also his protector. "Its song seemed to say that it had come to watch over us," (13). The song, Ultima's owl sings throughout each night, symbolizes Ultima's comforting presence in Antonio's life and the protective power of her magic. Also, like Ultima, the owl is like a healer to Antonio, when it sings through the night. "The owl had always been there. It sang to me the night my brothers came home from the war, and in my dreams I sometimes saw it guiding their footsteps as they stumbled through the dark streets of their distant cities," (272). Throughout the novel, the owl of Ultima is not only Ultima's protector, but it is also Antonio's protector. Also, in Antonio's mind as well, he could see it as a guiding spirit, because it provided a sense of hope and longing. All in all, Antonio sees Ultima's owl as a protector and comforting presence throughout the novel. The golden carp symbolizes the pagan religion which ties into christianity. • 27. Compare And Contrast A Barred Owl And The History Teacher It's the dead of the night and the shrieking calls of a barred owl break the silence. A young child bolts upright in bed with fear written across her innocent face. A teacher's class is about to be taught a lesson on The Ice Age. The parents of the frightened child hush their daughter and say it was just an inquisitive owl that scared her awake. The teacher pulls on a sweater and says, "Cavemen wore these a lot in The Ice Age." The children in these scenarios are the victims of deceit. Both poems, "A Barred Owl" and "The History Teacher" by Richard Wilbur and Billy Collins show the effects of not exposing children to the truth early on in life. The parent and teacher mentioned are only concerned about their children's innocence remaining intact, and they don't take into consideration how sheltering them from the truth life holds will affect the children's minds. Wilbur and Collins ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When the child was put to bed, the sky was probably not as dark as it was when she was woken by the owl. Wilbur's words reveal this when the poem begins on a lighter note than the gruesome ending. An owl has eyes that are much larger than those of the child mentioned. That being said, this barred owl can clearly see the world and the life around him. The child cannot due to the fact that her parents are preventing her from such exposure. Innocent minds deserve a healthy dose of reality provided in the form of truthful explanations from the adults in their lives. The poem, "The History Teacher" leans towards a more playful and bright tone than the tone Wilbur used in "A Barred Owl." It almost sounds ironic that Collins titled the poem, "The History Teacher" because when spoken in a sarcastic tone it sounds like he's mocking the teacher. He calls him a "history teacher" sarcastically because the poet agrees with the fact that this teacher isn't actually teaching history. He's feeding the children ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 31. Bird Imagery In Macbeth Makord Larsen Professor Fullmer English 1010 November 3, 2014 Macbeth Analysis Macbeth, written in the early 1600's by William Shakespeare, is an epic play that follows the course of the twisted war general, Macbeth. Throughout Macbeth, Shakespeare uses bird imagery to foreshadow events, better describe characters, and also give a detailed setting. Birds such as the Eagle and falcon are powerful icons, while birds of the night such as the crow and the owl give off a more eerie sense as predators. Their presence in the story is critical for a better understanding of the plot. Upon Macbeth's triumphant victory over the forces of Macdonwald, King Duncan asks for a report on the battle. This supernatural occurrence of an owl hunting a falcon, is parallel to Macbeth killing King Duncan. The falcon represents an honorable person who was in his 'pride of place' or rather his throne, when it was stalked and killed by the malicious owl. I chose this topic because I thought it sounded interesting. I also chose it because I have horrible night vision and have trouble driving at night, so I thought it would be cool to learn how certain primates live in darkness and how their eyes work. This topic is relevant to biological anthropology because we learned about all different types of primates throughout the course and their characteristics including: social behaviors, diets, nocturnal vs. diurnal, and many other aspects of primate life. We didn't get to go into detail about many of the primates and see the differences in nocturnal versus diurnal. In my paper I decided to key in on two specific animals, the owl money and brown lemur. I did this because I wanted to get to know more about each animal and the owl monkey has a very unique story. I also chose to narrow in on the main difference between all diurnal and nocturnal animals and that is the eyes. In my paper I will talk about the behavioral differences between the owl monkey and brown lemur (I will also go into some detail about each of the primates, because I thought they both were fascinating), the differences in the eyes, and also just some other general facts about diurnal and nocturnal primates. The first thing I'm going to talk about is the differences in the eyes of nocturnal and diurnal primates. One thing that is very fascinating to me is that many primates ... Laurie's, Dan's, Kovacs', Adrian's, and Jon's multiple names provide insight into their personalities and roles in the novel. Laurie Juspeczyk is the daughter of Sally Jupiter, formally known as Silk Spectre. The name Laurie is derived from the Latin name "Laurel". In Ancient Rome, leaves of laurel trees are used to create garlands for victors and champions. Laurie Juspeczyk's name directly relates to her character and personality as somewhat of a sidekick. Similarities Between A Barred Owl And The History Teacher "A Barred Owl" and "The History Teacher" The poems "A Barred Owl" and "the History Teacher" by Richard Wilbur and Billy Collins respectively, depict two different scenarios in which an adult deceives a child about something in the world. "A Barred Owl" has parents who lie to their child about an owl who waked her in the night, while "The History Teacher" tells us about a man who tries to protect his students by deceiving them. Techniques are used by both poets to convey a particular tone. While Wilbur's poem is more innocent in that it tries to soothe a child from the terrors of the darkness, Collins' poem is about someone trying protect something that is already gone––in this case, the children's innocence. In "A Barred Owl", a girl's parents are consoling her in the middle of the night because an owl had frightened her. The parents respond to her fear by telling her that the owl is merely asking "who cooks for you?" Wilbur conveys this by using a humorous tone saying that "[It] was an odd question from a forest bird..." using the word "bird" instead of owl. My mind doesn't work like that and I find it very interesting and I can't even imagine what kinds of conversations Bosch had with his fellow artist at the time. I always knew that owls symbolize with wisdom and "knowledge and erudition that can see through obscurity (and as the bird of Athena/Minerva, the goddess of wisdom), the owl appears frequently in the emblems of scholarly publishing houses and book stores" (Biedermann, 250) but Bosch gives his owls different symbolic meanings. ... I originally went to the event as extra credit for a biology class but ended up learning a lot and really enjoying the lecture. Before the event began, visitors were able to interact with two owls in the lobby outside the lecture hall. The smaller of the two, named Bumper, was blind due to being hit by a car. The larger one ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The entire lecture hall where we normally have bio classes was full and some people were even standing or using extra chairs. The second thing that surprised me was that someone could talk about owls for so long. It really was fascinating that Mr. Weidensaul knew so much about them. He started his talk by describing owls as "souls of the night." he explained that no culture is indifferent to owls, some revere them and others fear them. There have been owls in cave drawings, art, and literature throughout history. Another interesting part of the talk was Weidensaul's description of how scientists think of owls. At first, it was believed that owls were related to night birds and predators but with better technology, scientists were able to sequence more genomes and show that the closest relatives to owls are in fact mouse birds. It was also found that barn owls split from typical owls, the other family, around 45 million years ago. I also found it interesting that the ear tufts on owls are just used for camo, not hearing. Their actual "ears" are just openings in the skull. These openings are often asymmetrical on the owls head! For example, the one on the right points upward and the one on the left points downward. This is so the owl can locate soft sounds without moving its ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 63. Advantages And Disadvantages Of Owls In my early childhood my parents always made me go to bed at 9 PM. They believed (wordiness) in a common thought that the earlier you go to sleep, the easier it will be to wake up in the morning. It doesn't matter how many times I refused, I was still obliged to do that. As time passed, it became impossible for me to be in bed even by 11 PM. At this particular time, so to say, I become as mentally active as never during the daytime and all tasks seem to be easier to solve. These types of people who prefer staying awake late at night are called owls. Moreover, there is a different type of people who prefer doing everything when the sun is coming up. They are called larks. What are other differences between these two types and what can be said ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is not a surprise, actually, because night time means that people go to pubs or clubs. Consequently, the desire to consume alcohol and nicotine is much higher and is less resistible. Researchers who conducted the same studies, created a parallel between the alcohol abuse as well as mental disorders with the novelty–seeking. Novelty–seeking, according to Wikipedia, "is a personality trait associated with exploratory activity in response to novel stimulation, impulsive decision making, extravagance in approach to reward cues, and quick loss of temper and avoidance of frustration." The same research showed that larks tend to be more proactive, agreeable and stable than owls. Besides, larks are less like to be procrastinators. The study conducted by a researcher named Joseph Ferrari showed that larks procrastinate less because they don't leave all the tasks till night. Owls, on the contrary, do this and such a habit may lead to job troubles. A person is expected to do his/her job during the daytime and if a person can't do it, the employer starts hesitating whether to keep such a worker at the office or not. Because there are so many differences between there 2 types of people, it's almost impossible to form any similarities. However, I managed to come up with one connection between owls and larks. Both morning and evening types of people are active ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 65. Theme Of Birds In Macbeth The play Macbeth, written in 1606 by William Shakespeare, revolves around an overambitious thane who demonstrates impulsive and avaricious actions in order to obtain his desired power. Shakespeare wrote this play to remove suspicion of his involvement in the Gunpowder Plot by praising King James I and condemning the revolutionaries, which he hoped would lead the King to believing his reverence and loyalty toward him. In Macbeth, birds are a recurring motif; they continually have different meanings, but all represent the foreshadowing of events of murder, the actual occurrences of the murders, or the aftereffects the murders have on the people of Scotland. Birds initially symbolized the foreshadowing of Duncan's murder due to their specific characteristics. For example, Duncan said, "This guest of summer/the temple–haunting martlet, does approve/by his loved mansionry, that the heaven's breath/smells wooingly here..." (1.5.3–10), which evokes imagery of wholesomeness, safety and splendor outside of the Macbeth castle because this bird migrates to Scotland, and is a representation of the summer, as that is their time of travel. This is foreshadowing because the birds' presence and location conveys the contrast of the reality inside of the castle, which has evil, darkness, and malice, as the Macbeths are plotting the murder of Duncan. The idealization of the outdoors shows the opposition of the inside and reveals that there is more than one atmosphere on this property. Birds ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 67. Symbols And Motifs In Macbeth In the drama Macbeth by William Shakespeare, Shakespeare uses symbols and motifs to demonstrate how Macbeth's ambition leads him to corruption. For example, immediately after Lady Macbeth has set up the murder of King Duncan and is relishing her triumph, she declares, "Hark! Peace! / It was the owl that shriek'd, the fatal bellman, / Which gives the stern'st good–night" (II.ii.2–4). This is an example of the symbol of animal imagery as Lady Macbeth describes the shriek of the owl, which represents of the motif of death for the reason that the owl's hoot superstitiously foretells fatality. Additionally, this ties into the idea that ambition leads to corruption as in this scenario, the hoot of the owl signifies Duncan's murder, committed by Macbeth ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Learning from her brothers mistakes she asked a rabbit that was hopping around, " Do you know where to find something that is capable of lighting up the night sky?" The rabbit replied, " You should try to find an owl. They are awake at night and can tell you what lights up." However, female barn owls are more reddish in color than the males and have more spots on their chests. Barn owls have dark eyes that are well–equipped for low light conditions. Strictly nocturnal, barn owls have one big front tooth for snatching prey. Range and Habitat Barn owls live on every continent except Antarctica. They have excellent night vision that allows them to easily locate prey. However, what is even more amazing about barn owls is their hearing. They can find prey using only their sense of sound better than any other animal. Barn owls' diets consist mostly of small mammals such as mice, moles and rabbits. They will also eat small birds, but that is very rare. Barn owls swallow their prey whole – fur, skin, bones and meat. They cannot digest all this material, so twice a day they regurgitate, or cough up, pellets of what they cannot process. The amount of food barn owls hunt for is based on whether or not they have offspring. Barn owls hunt for food in the same areas as some of their predators.
