Altmetrics attempts to provide timely measures of an impact through the use of metrics from HTML views and downloads of scholarly articles, blog posts, tweets, bookmarks, etc. Publishers of scientific research have enabled altmetrics on their articles, open source applications are available for platforms to display altmetrics on scientific research and subscription models have been created to measure the use that research articles receive online. This presentation reviews some of the current models for providing altmetrics along with information on a selection the providers that have made altmetrics available for general use.
This presentation is a step by step introduction to ImpactStory, an online tool (by Heather Piwowar and Jason Priem) that helps researchers look at the impact of their research outputs.
You can use ImpactStory to get an idea who is bookmarking, recommending, saving and citing your papers as well as other outputs (e.g. software and blog posts) and where this is happening.

Altmetrics in the Academy - Implementing strategies in the library for better academic engagement, dissemination and measurement
Workshop abstract:
Altmetrics are increasingly gaining support and interest as an alternative way of disseminating and measuring scholarly output. Championed by early career researchers, librarians and information professionals, Altmetrics are to research as MOOCs are to learning. Like MOOCs most still do not understand their potential or how they could fit with or replace existing modes of delivery and assessment.
The first half of the workshop will help delegates gain an understanding of what Altmetrics are and how they can fit within academic library services. The second half of the session will deliver case studies, tools and techniques to help LIS professionals encourage better usage of Altmetrics.

Brace for Impact: New Means for Measuring Research MetricsMary Ellen Sloane
As open access journals and repositories gain a foothold in scholarly communication, researchers are finding that the traditional impact factor and citation count metrics only reflect a portion of the dissemination of scholarly works.
New technology, research, and citation tools aid our ability to measure the influence of research. A matrix of tools and initiatives, like PLoS Article-Level Metrics, BePress’ Author Dashboard, Mendeley, Altmetrics, and ImpactStory are providing a more robust picture of scholarly communication today.
This presentation provides an overview of the impact factor system and new tools for gathering metrics and their relevance for librarians and researchers.

Ideas that seem obvious today, at one point were obscure facts known only to a select few. The health benefits of washing hands, wearing a seatbelt while in a car - none of these ideas and practices were accepted immediately. In addition to needing time to incubate, new ideas also need to be accessible so that they can be tested, debated, and built upon. This presentation, which is based on my previous research and personal experiences, will highlight the importance and connection between open access publishing and the role of social media in promotion and dissemination of scholarly research.
Social signals are being increasingly used by science publishers to predict citation rate of papers using these alternative metrics (altmetrics).
This presentation explores the growing importance of an online presence to the professional scientist. It offers three key tips to enhance your visibility - and along with it an improved long term citation rate - and signposts to tools to monitor the online impact of your work output.

Increasingly, many aspects of scholarly communication—particularly publication, research data, and peer review—undergo scrutiny by researchers and scholars. Many of these practitioners are engaging in a variety of ways with Alternative Metrics (#altmetrics in the Twitterverse). Alternative Metrics take many forms but often focus on efforts to move beyond proprietary bibliometrics and traditional forms of peer referencing in assessing the quality and scholarly impact of published work. Join NISO for a webinar that will present several emerging aspects of Alternative Metrics.
Insights into Influence: Scholar-Practitioner Profile in the Academy and Comm...Kathleen Reed
Demonstrating knowledge mobilization and accountability are increasingly prominent features of the scholarly landscape; scholar-practitioners need to understand and strategically manage available indicators of impact. At the same time, traditional scholarly metrics and indexing are converging with social media, resulting in new approaches for measuring scholar-practitioner influence. The emerging scene challenges libraries to support scholars, practitioners and students to engage with an evolving environment in which much may be gained or forfeited depending on how reputation is curated. For librarians to assist scholars in this new altmetrics environment, more needs to be known about how students and faculty are or are not engaging with emerging tools available to them. This presentation gives an overview of the considerations, perceptions, and issues related to the use of altmetrics by graduate students and scholar-practitioners at VIU and Royal Roads University.

The Rise of Big Data Governance: Insight on this Emerging Trend from Active O...DataWorks Summit
Each of today’s most forward-thinking enterprises have been forced to face similar data challenges: the reliance on real-time data to better serve their customers and, subsequently, the requirement of complying with regulations to protect that data – one example being the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
The solution to this emerging challenge is a tricky one – for companies like ING, this data governance challenge has been met with metadata, a consistent view across a large heterogeneous ecosystem and collaboration with an active open source community.
This joint presentation, John Mertic – director of program management for ODPi – and Ferd Scheepers – Global Chief Information Architect of ING – will address the benefits of a vendor-neutral approach to data governance, the need for an open metadata standard, along with insight around how companies ING, IBM, Hortonworks and more are delivering solutions to this challenge as an open source initiative.

Flink for Everyone: Self Service Data Analytics with StreamPipes - Philipp Ze...Flink Forward
This talk presents StreamPipes (https://www.streampipes.org), an open source self-service data analytics solution leveraging existing big data technologies such as Apache Flink to provide non-technical users with an easy and intuitive way to connect, analyze and exploit a variety of different streaming data sources for their use.
Newly arising IoT-driven use cases in domains such as manufacturing, smart city or autonomous driving often demand for continuous integration and processing of sensor data in order to derive time-sensitive actions. One example is the optimization of maintenance processes based on the current condition of machines (condition-based maintenance). While this is technically already well supported by the existing big data tool landscape, building such applications still require a crucial set of expertise ranging from general domain expertise, programming skills to deep knowledge on distributed and scalable systems. Such skills are usually not present in hardware-focused manufacturing companies.
To mitigate these shortcomings, StreamPipes allows non-technical users to leverage a graphical editor to model and deploy analytical tasks as pipelines in a drag and drop manner. Pipelines are built based on a toolbox of reusable data adapters, processors and sinks. Toolbox elements encapsulate dedicated algorithms (e.g., filter, aggregation, machine learning classifiers) implemented in big data processing engines such as Apache Flink communicating over an internal distributed messaging system (e.g. Apache Kafka).
In this talk, we present technologies and tools enabling flexible modeling of real-time processing pipelines by domain experts. We motivate our talk by showing real-world examples we gathered from a number of industry projects during the past years in Industrial IoT domains such as manufacturing and supply chain management. For instance, we show how StreamPipes eases the accessibility of big data tools for non-technical users based on examples such as supervising a fleet of autonomous electric delivery vehicles as well as data analytics in one of the largest test areas for autonomous driving in Germany.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
