REVIEW
Ellie Goulding: Falling for You
Type of Music Video
The song that I am doing is by Ellie Goulding and
its called ‘Falling for you’. This music video is
narrative and performance. The performance is
disjuncture and the reason for this is because when
she dances she does it with the intention to look
sexy rather than have meaning.
Setting
In the music video there is only one setting used and this is in the
studio. This is the only setting because in the background of the studio
is a projector that is projecting clips from the film. The reason for this is
because the viewers attention wants to be either on what is happening
on the screen behind Ellie Goulding or on her. Therefore, the black
background stops the viewers eye being caught by something else and
distracting them.
Costumes
Throughout the music video there is only one costume used and this is
the one that Ellie Goulding is wearing. The costume is a black see through
lacy dress that has a slit up the left side. The top of the dress has a black
velvet piece of material that covers her boobs and lower half. However, the
rest of the dress just has a lacy design and is see through. The reason that
she is wearing this is because the dress is grown up but still has a sex
appeal about it. This costume is also relatable because it is trendy and is
something that teenagers/ young adults would wear themselves.
Lighting
In the music video different lighting is used and this changes the
atmosphere and mood of the song at different times. Throughout most of the
song the lighting is quite bright and this represents that the mood of the song
as it is happy and upbeat, whereas if the lighting was dark this would
represent a dim and gloomy mood. Red lighting is also used throughout the
music video. This lighting is soft and romantic and reflects the lyrics and
mood of the song as the song is about someone falling in love and red is a
colour that symbolises this feeling. Other colours have been used such as
blue, pink and green and this does not have no purpose as it doesn’t reflect
the lyrics or what is happening on screen.
Props
In the music video ‘I’m still falling for you’ the first prop that you see is a
projector in the background. The projector that has been used to show the
narrative of a film in the background and this sets the mood of the song so that
it romantic and warm. This prop is also important because it represents what
the song is about and helps the audience understand the lyrics to the song.
This prop could be relatable to people who are good with technology and
enjoy seeing this involved in music videos. The last prop that you see in the
music video is different types of lights in the background. These props have
been used to set the atmosphere of the song to a warm feeling rather than a
cold harsh lighting. This lighting will be relatable to people who perform as
they will use these bright pole lights when performing in the background for
all bright white light and to get a bright atmosphere and mood.
Body Language
Throughout the music video Ellie Gouldings body language is
open which represents that she is happy and free. Whereas if her
body movements was closed and not as free it would show she is
miserable and sad. Her arms are also moving and open wide and
this also reflects that she is happy and not closed off. Her facial
expressions also show her emotion. For example throughout the
music video Ellie Goulding doesn’t once look miserable or upset
and this is because this would change the emotion of the song into a
negative way. In the music video she does constantly look happy
and this is because the song is quite upbeat and positive and
therefore her facial expressions are representing this.
Camera Angles
In the music video a range of camera angles. The common camera
angle used is a close-up. This is used so that you can see her facial
expressions and her hand movements when she is touching her face
and stroking her neck. This is because she is trying to be sexy and act
romantic as it reflects the mood of he song. This has also been used so
that you can see a close-up when she is singing the song and this allows
you to see her passion whilst singing. The second most used camera
angle in the music video is a wide angle. This is used a lot because it
allows you to see the scenes that are playing in the background as well
as Ellie Goulding when she is moving her arms around and trying to be
sexy and romantic. Extreme close-ups have been used and this are so
that you can only see a certain feature on her face such as her lips when
she is singing or her eyes. Tracking shots have also been used
throughout the music video and this is when the camera angle is going
around Ellie Goulding or tracking up her body to allow you to see her
body movements and facial expressions better.

How it follows the genre codes
The song ‘Falling for You’ by Ellie Goulding follows the codes and conventions for
genre pop. For example the one of the codes and conventions are that the lyrics are
based around love and relationships and this song is as the song is about someone
who is still falling in love each day with their partner. For example when it says:
‘Falling, crash into my arms
Love you like this
Like a first kiss
Never let go
Falling, crash into my arms
Never breaking what we got
Still falling for you
Still falling for...’
The reason that the song is about love and relationships as the song was wrote for
the film Bridget Jones baby.
How it follows the genre codes
The next code and convention that the music video follows is that the
artist is portrayed as being happy and content with life. In the music video
Ellie Goulding is performing as clips of the film are shown in the
background. As the song is romantic and happy Ellie Gouldings mood in
the video reflects this. For example in the video she is constantly moving
around and moving her arms around. However, as the song is romantic the
video has a calm and romantic atmosphere and Ellie Goulding body
language reflects this and this is what shows that she is happy as it is very
open whereas if she was acting stiff in the music video and not moving
around as much she would look sad and miserable.
How it follows the genre codes
The next code and convention for the genre pop is that the artist
wears fashionable outfits and follows current trends. The
costume that Ellie Goulding is wearing is very fashionable, this is
important because it shows that she is keeping up with current
trends and this is something that young females can relate to as
they would also wear something like this.
How it follows the genre codes
Showing the unity between teenagers is also another code
and convention fro the pop genre. This code and convention
wasn’t used in the music video and the reason for this is
because the song is about promoting the film and not really
incorporating code and conventions.
How it follows the genre codes
The last code and convention that is used in the genre pop
is a verse/chorus/verse structure. This convention was
followed because almost every pop song follows this
structure when it is a pop song and it is so that the audience
can follow the song and remember it. This structure also
helps the song get more dramatic towards the end.
CGI
In the music video no CGI has been used and the reason
for this is because the setting is simple and studio based.
Therefore nothing happens in the video that requires this.
What is successful?
I think this was successful because as the song and
video came across to the audience as romantic and full
of life which is how it was supposed to be. I also think
it was successful because the film it was promoting
was extremely popular and part of the reason for this
is because of how successfully the song promoted the
film and how popular it was. I think the video is
successful because of how simple it is but effective, the
lighting makes the song more colourful and brings a
brighter mood to the song. I think the fact that it
followed most of the codes and conventions makes it
successful as this makes it relatable for the target
audience.

Original music video review 2 4

  • 1. ORIGINAL MUSIC VIDEO REVIEW Ellie Goulding: Falling for You
  • 2. Type of Music Video The song that I am doing is by Ellie Goulding and its called ‘Falling for you’. This music video is narrative and performance. The performance is disjuncture and the reason for this is because when she dances she does it with the intention to look sexy rather than have meaning.
  • 3. Setting In the music video there is only one setting used and this is in the studio. This is the only setting because in the background of the studio is a projector that is projecting clips from the film. The reason for this is because the viewers attention wants to be either on what is happening on the screen behind Ellie Goulding or on her. Therefore, the black background stops the viewers eye being caught by something else and distracting them.
  • 4. Costumes Throughout the music video there is only one costume used and this is the one that Ellie Goulding is wearing. The costume is a black see through lacy dress that has a slit up the left side. The top of the dress has a black velvet piece of material that covers her boobs and lower half. However, the rest of the dress just has a lacy design and is see through. The reason that she is wearing this is because the dress is grown up but still has a sex appeal about it. This costume is also relatable because it is trendy and is something that teenagers/ young adults would wear themselves.
  • 5. Lighting In the music video different lighting is used and this changes the atmosphere and mood of the song at different times. Throughout most of the song the lighting is quite bright and this represents that the mood of the song as it is happy and upbeat, whereas if the lighting was dark this would represent a dim and gloomy mood. Red lighting is also used throughout the music video. This lighting is soft and romantic and reflects the lyrics and mood of the song as the song is about someone falling in love and red is a colour that symbolises this feeling. Other colours have been used such as blue, pink and green and this does not have no purpose as it doesn’t reflect the lyrics or what is happening on screen.
  • 6. Props In the music video ‘I’m still falling for you’ the first prop that you see is a projector in the background. The projector that has been used to show the narrative of a film in the background and this sets the mood of the song so that it romantic and warm. This prop is also important because it represents what the song is about and helps the audience understand the lyrics to the song. This prop could be relatable to people who are good with technology and enjoy seeing this involved in music videos. The last prop that you see in the music video is different types of lights in the background. These props have been used to set the atmosphere of the song to a warm feeling rather than a cold harsh lighting. This lighting will be relatable to people who perform as they will use these bright pole lights when performing in the background for all bright white light and to get a bright atmosphere and mood.
  • 7. Body Language Throughout the music video Ellie Gouldings body language is open which represents that she is happy and free. Whereas if her body movements was closed and not as free it would show she is miserable and sad. Her arms are also moving and open wide and this also reflects that she is happy and not closed off. Her facial expressions also show her emotion. For example throughout the music video Ellie Goulding doesn’t once look miserable or upset and this is because this would change the emotion of the song into a negative way. In the music video she does constantly look happy and this is because the song is quite upbeat and positive and therefore her facial expressions are representing this.
  • 8. Camera Angles In the music video a range of camera angles. The common camera angle used is a close-up. This is used so that you can see her facial expressions and her hand movements when she is touching her face and stroking her neck. This is because she is trying to be sexy and act romantic as it reflects the mood of he song. This has also been used so that you can see a close-up when she is singing the song and this allows you to see her passion whilst singing. The second most used camera angle in the music video is a wide angle. This is used a lot because it allows you to see the scenes that are playing in the background as well as Ellie Goulding when she is moving her arms around and trying to be sexy and romantic. Extreme close-ups have been used and this are so that you can only see a certain feature on her face such as her lips when she is singing or her eyes. Tracking shots have also been used throughout the music video and this is when the camera angle is going around Ellie Goulding or tracking up her body to allow you to see her body movements and facial expressions better.

  • 10. How it follows the genre codes The song ‘Falling for You’ by Ellie Goulding follows the codes and conventions for genre pop. For example the one of the codes and conventions are that the lyrics are based around love and relationships and this song is as the song is about someone who is still falling in love each day with their partner. For example when it says: ‘Falling, crash into my arms Love you like this Like a first kiss Never let go Falling, crash into my arms Never breaking what we got Still falling for you Still falling for...’ The reason that the song is about love and relationships as the song was wrote for the film Bridget Jones baby.
  • 11. How it follows the genre codes The next code and convention that the music video follows is that the artist is portrayed as being happy and content with life. In the music video Ellie Goulding is performing as clips of the film are shown in the background. As the song is romantic and happy Ellie Gouldings mood in the video reflects this. For example in the video she is constantly moving around and moving her arms around. However, as the song is romantic the video has a calm and romantic atmosphere and Ellie Goulding body language reflects this and this is what shows that she is happy as it is very open whereas if she was acting stiff in the music video and not moving around as much she would look sad and miserable.
  • 12. How it follows the genre codes The next code and convention for the genre pop is that the artist wears fashionable outfits and follows current trends. The costume that Ellie Goulding is wearing is very fashionable, this is important because it shows that she is keeping up with current trends and this is something that young females can relate to as they would also wear something like this.
  • 13. How it follows the genre codes Showing the unity between teenagers is also another code and convention fro the pop genre. This code and convention wasn’t used in the music video and the reason for this is because the song is about promoting the film and not really incorporating code and conventions.
  • 14. How it follows the genre codes The last code and convention that is used in the genre pop is a verse/chorus/verse structure. This convention was followed because almost every pop song follows this structure when it is a pop song and it is so that the audience can follow the song and remember it. This structure also helps the song get more dramatic towards the end.
  • 15. CGI In the music video no CGI has been used and the reason for this is because the setting is simple and studio based. Therefore nothing happens in the video that requires this.
  • 16. What is successful? I think this was successful because as the song and video came across to the audience as romantic and full of life which is how it was supposed to be. I also think it was successful because the film it was promoting was extremely popular and part of the reason for this is because of how successfully the song promoted the film and how popular it was. I think the video is successful because of how simple it is but effective, the lighting makes the song more colourful and brings a brighter mood to the song. I think the fact that it followed most of the codes and conventions makes it successful as this makes it relatable for the target audience.
