The document discusses the effectiveness of linking an artist's main music video product with ancillary texts like advertisements and album packaging. Pink was used as a theme throughout to appeal to the target audience of females ages 15-18. In the music video, pink lighting was used during performances to match the pink backgrounds of the advertisement and digipak. Photographs in the digipak portrayed the artist as sexy to attract male viewers, consistent with expectations in the pop genre. Clouds in the backgrounds of the ancillary texts were also included in sky backgrounds in the music video to further strengthen connections between the pieces.
1. Question 2- How effective is the
combination of your main product and
ancillary texts?
2. I wanted to make sure that my ancillary task and main
product linked with each other had been consistent. The
reason that I wanted to do this is so that it was clear that
they go together and my audience will know this from looking
at them all. In my main product I had to the colour pink as
this was theme throughout my ancillary task. The way that I
have done this is by when my artist is performing in the
music video I have put a pink gel over the lighting (8).

3. The reason that I have done this is because this then
reflects pink onto my artist and this links with my ancillary
task as the background colour in my advert and digipak is
also pink. The reason that I have gone for the colour pink
is because my music video is aimed at females and more
specifically female teenagers ages 15-18. This also
means that I need my digipak and advert to be able to
link with this and the way that I was going to do this is
through the colour pink. I went for pink because this is
seen as more of a ‘feminine’ colour and therefore will be
appealing to my target audience hopefully.
4. Another way that I had my main product links to my ancillary
task is by the way that I had my artist performing. I wanted my
artist to be portrayed as sexy and happy and the way that I did
this is through the way that she interacted with the camera.
This linked with my ancillary task because in my digipak I have
two photographs with my artist and in the photographs my
artist is posing and looks topless (9). The reason I did this is
because I want to artist to have a sex appeal as this is what is
going to draw in males and is a common thing to see in the
genre pop when it comes to female artists.

5. . Another way that I made my main product links with my
ancillary task so that they were a consistency is through
the use of backgrounds. In my ancillary task I had the
background to be pink put then blended clouds in them to
give the illusion is was the sky. I kind of wanted to bring
this into my music video and the way that I did this is
through performance. In my main product I have my artist
performing at the top of the hill. I have done this not only
for the scenery but also because in the background you
can see clouds. This links with my theme and shows that I
have planned out what I want to be similar and be shown
in both my ancillary and main product. I also did this by
using the same actor in all three products to build a strong
connection.
6. My ancillary task consisted of two things and these are my
magazine advert and my digipak. First I created my magazine
advert and the theme of this was pink and clouds and the
reason for this is because I wanted the colour to be quite bright
and stand out and I thought that pink would be the perfect
colour for it. I also wanted the magazine advert to stand out to
females and as pink is seen as more of a feminine colour so I
decided to go with this colour to be able to appeal to them. I
then added the clouds theme in and the reason for this is
because I feel like it links to the name of the album. As the
name of the album is This is Falling (10) I wanted to add in the
clouds as it is like you’re falling through the air and it also made
the magazine advert stand out even more.

7. I then went on to make my digipak and I wanted to carry on
with the theme as this is creating a brand identity for me. To
do this used the exact same background so that I had
continuity in my tasks. I also made sure that in both my
magazine advert and digipak that I used the same font and
the same technique on how I presented the title of my
work. I used the font Century Gothic on both pieces of work
so that they matched and looked similar to each other as I
wanted people to know that they both go together.
8. I also made sure that I presented the title of the CD the
same and I did this through the use of photoshop. I wanted
my digipak and magazine advert to stand out so the way
that I managed to do this is I made my title look like it was
falling through the sky by adding lines above it and erasing
the edges out to look like drops. I also made sure that I
used the same person through the images that I included of
my artist throughout the ancillary task. The artist in my main
product is also the same person as who appears in my
music video. I have done this so that there is continuity and
so that my ancillary tasks almost reflects the artists
personality.
9. I have themes throughout my main product and my
ancillary tasks so that they can all be linked together and
seen as one. For example part of my theme is through
the use of a colour theme which was pink and clouds as
this appears on both my ancillary task and main product.
However, I could make more of a theme throughout my
ancillary task and main product. One way that I could do
this is by somehow including the cloud theme more in my
main product. I could do this by projecting the image of a
cloud on my artist whilst she is performing to get a similar
result as the pink gel, I could also do this by using a
green screen and CGI.
10. The brand identity for my music video is about looking the
best that you possibly could. The reason that this is my
brand identity is because if you look at my digipak the artist
is done up and has make up on and is posing in a way that
makes her look the best she can. This is also the same for
my artist in the music video as she is wearing a nice dress
has makeup on and the way that she is looking into the
camera and acting is in a certain way so that she looks the
best she can. Although I have a brand identity but I could
make this stronger by showing more outfits and costumes
in my digipak and by having my artist look different on each
photograph through makeup and hairstyles which will be
relatable to my target audience.
