3. Analysis – Ed Sheeran – Thinking Out Loud
What do you like about the work?
What I like about the music video is the simplicity and elegance of it. There are only two
performers, Ed Sheeran and a female dancer dancing together in a grand hall with
spotlights on them. I also like the visuals within the music video because it fits in well
with the acoustic soft guitar.
How many locations are used?
Only one location is used within the music video to help maintain the simplicity of it.
This also shows continuity within the music video as well.
How many costume changes?
Only one costume was used per person as the simplicity of the video and the elegance
of the dancing didn’t need an excessive amount of costume changes and locations to
help keep the audience interested.
Are cutaways to narrative used? If so, how does it relate to
the lyrics?
Cutaways and narratives are used within this video as it shows Ed’s face smiling whilst
the lyrics sing “forever in my arms”.
Variety of camera work?
There are various camera angles and panning shots used within the video to help keep
the music video flowing with the music and also to match the pace of the dancing.
There is long shots used to show off their dancing then there are two close ups of two
protagonists together.

5. Analysis – Ariana Grande – Into You
What do you like about the work?
What I like most about this music video is the colour palette and how it is all pastel colours like pink,
blue and purple. Also the use of narrative and different locations entices the audience and helps them
connect to the music video personally . I also like the fast paced editing used when the song intensifies
which is also very effective because it helps everything come together.
How many locations are used?
There are seven different locations used within the music video as they are trying to convey a story.
This use of variety in locations helps the audience understand the narrative easier and it also shows
variety.
How many costume changes?
There are five costume changes within the video which offers variety to the video and also keeps it
interesting. This also helps the audience understand the structure of the narrative better. For example
she is wearing casual clothes within the “motel room” but during the shots within the party she is in a
skin tight dress.
Are cutaways to narrative used? If so, how does it relate to the
lyrics?
Cutaways to narratives are used within the music video for example you can see the expressions on
Ariana's face, smiling and laughing.
Variety of camera work?
At the beginning of the music video there is an establishing shot, which sets the scene and shows the
audience that it will predominantly be set out in a desert area. Following this is a close up of Ariana’s
face which makes her the main focus of the music video. There is a shot of her and the presumed
boyfriend character on a motorbike, the shot is also taken at the same height as the characters, this
puts the audience in their perspective and help them connect with the characters.

7. Analysis – Beyoncé – Hold Up
What do you like about the work?
What I like about this music video is the fact that it is empowering to women and also how the
costume, makeup and props are used to create a certain outlook on the emotions that Beyoncé is
going through.
How many locations are used?
Two locations are used within this music video. The first one shows Beyoncé underwater within
elegant traditional building. The second location is then shown as typical American downtown
high street midday.
How many costume changes?
There is only one costume change as the music video is a part of a larger number of music videos
which shows the full narrative therefore the need for a big amount of outfit changes wasn’t
necessary.
Are cutaways to narrative used? If so, how does it relate to the
lyrics?
Cutaways to narratives are used within the music video as it includes close ups of Beyoncé's face s
and the nice weather creates a pathetic fallacy to the look on Beyoncé's face as she is showing a
unbothered and fearless, empowering smile and smirk across her face.
Variety of camera work?
At the beginning of the music video there are mainly close ups of Beyoncé's face and after this
when she is walking there are close ups of her feet and then predominantly medium long shots.
There is also a scene where she is seen through the perspective of a security camera that she then
smashes, this adds variety to the camera work used.

Variety of camera work?

to be complex and fast paced but it was made to be simple but effective. There is a lot of
zooming in and out and close ups of Adele’s face.
