Satellites play a significant role in communication, early warning systems, global broadcasting, meteorology, navigation, reconnaissance, remote sensing, and surveillance.Satellite services cover practically every sector, from mobile cellular communication to telemedicine, so any interference with them could have a serious effect. Satellites are a strategic asset for any country and are considered as “critical infrastructure,” therefore they are considerable as privileged targets for a possible cyber attack.
The Influence of Participant Personality in Usability TestsCSCJournals
This paper presents the results of a study investigating the impact of participant personality on usability testing. Data were collected from 20 individuals who participated in a series of usability tests. The participants were grouped into 10 introverts and 10 extroverts, and were asked to complete a set of four experimental tasks related to the usability of an academic website. The results of the study revealed that extroverts were more successful than introverts in terms of finding information as well as discovering usability problems, although the types of problems found by both groups were mostly minor. It was also found that extroverts spent more time on tasks but made more mistakes than introverts. From these findings, it is evident that personality dimensions have significant impacts on usability testing outcomes, and thus should be taken into consideration as a key factor of usability testing.
Scalability in Model Checking through Relational DatabasesCSCJournals
In this paper we present a new ATL model checking tool used for verification of open systems. An open system interacts with its environment and its behavior depends on the state of the system as well as the behavior of the environment. The Alternating-Time Temporal Logic (ATL) logic is interpreted over concurrent game structures, considered as natural models for compositions of open systems. In contrast to previous approaches, our tool permits an interactive design of the ATL models as state-transition graphs, and is based on client/server architecture: ATL Designer, the client tool, allows an interactive construction of the concurrent game structures as a directed multi-graphs and the ATL Checker, the core of our tool, represents the server part and is published as Web service. The ATL Checker includes an algebraic compiler which was implemented using ANTLR (Another Tool for Language Recognition). Our model checker tool allows designers to automatically verify that systems satisfy specifications expressed by ATL formulas. The original implementation of the model checking algorithm is based on Relational Algebra expressions translated into SQL queries. Several database systems were used for evaluating the system performance in verification of large ATL models.

The trek towards sustainability - truth, tale, or transition?Birgit Penzenstadler
This is the keynote given at the European Conference of Software Architecture, ECSA 2023, in Istanbul, Turkey. You may have heard about sustainability and the Sustainable Development Goals and the Global Reporting Initiative that now requires bigger companies to adjust their reporting in order to increase transparency. At the same time, you may have a funky feeling that there’s quite a bit of hot air and greenwashing going on around there. So how do we truly transition towards more sustainability? Why may we also want to think about more resilience? And what inner transition is required to make this big outer shift? In this talk, I give a brief (necessarily incomplete) overview of the last decade of sustainability research in and outside of software engineering and sketch a vision of what’s to come if we truly embrace a transition, and what may happen if we don’t.
Using a Visual Abstract as a Lens for Communicating and Promoting Design Scie...Margaret-Anne Storey

Abstract:
Empirical software engineering research aims to generate prescriptive knowledge that can help software engineers improve their work and overcome their challenges, but deriving these insights from real-world problems can be challenging. In this paper, we promote design science as an effective way to produce and communicate prescriptive knowledge. We propose using a visual abstract template to communicate design science contributions and highlight the main problem/solution constructs of this area of research, as well as to present the validity aspects of design knowledge. Our conceptualization of design science is derived from existing literature and we illustrate its use by applying the visual abstract to an example use case. This is work in progress and further evaluation by practitioners and researchers will be forthcoming.

The wickedness of design research practice - IASDR 2013fatech
In this paper we review existing literature in design research to see to what extent it provides a basis for meeting the methodological challenges that we encounter in our own practice- based design research. Seemingly, much attention is given to describing the results and types of knowledge that design research may provide, the purposes those may serve and by what yardsticks those results may be evaluated. Another focal area seems to be the form(-ats) in which the results of design research are presented and disseminated. What is often missing, however, are detailed accounts of the roles that design practice plays that can be picked up and used by others doing design research. This is unfortunate, as it is often such methodological structures that we struggle with. The emergence of ‘design research practices’ entails something more than mere combinations of design practice and academic research. Research typically has the objective of knowledge production; practice has the objective of creating the right thing by solving a set of problems. Considered a ‘new’ kind of design practice, design research practice seems to be more about problem finding through the design and creation of things that bring knowledge to expression. Thus, the process by which it achieves this must be uncovered and articulated.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
