The document discusses optimal siting and sizing of distributed generation (DG) units while considering harmonic limits. It aims to maximize DG penetration level in the IEEE 30 bus system using the Social Learning Particle Swarm Optimization (SLPSO) algorithm. The SLPSO algorithm determines the optimal locations and sizes of 12 DG units in the system. With the optimally sited and sized DG units, the maximum DG penetration level of 60.7950% is achieved while satisfying voltage limits, harmonic distortion limits, and protection coordination constraints. The real power losses in the system are reduced by 31.3696% with the addition of DG units.
Benchmarking medium voltage feeders using data envelopment analysis: a case s...TELKOMNIKA JOURNAL
Feeder performance evaluation is a key component in improving the power system network.
Currently there is no proper method to find the performance of Medium Voltage Feeders (MVF) except the
number of feeder failures. Performance benchmarking may be used to identify actual performance of
feeders. The results of such benchmarking studies allow the organization to compare feeders with
themselves and identify poorly performing feeders. This paper focuses on prominent benchmarking
techniques used in international regulatory regime and analyses the applicability to MVFs.
Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) method is selected to analyze the MVFs. Correlation analysis and DEA
analysis are carried out on different models and then the base model is selected for the analysis.
The relative performance of the 32 MVFs of Western Province, Sri Lanka is evaluated using the DEA.
Relative efficiency scores are identified for each feeder. Also the feeders are classified according to the
sensitivity analysis. The results indicate that the DEA analysis may be conveniently employed to evaluate
the performance of the MVFs. The evaluation is carried out once or twice a year with the MV distribution
development plan in order to identify the performance of the feeders and to utilize the available limited
resources efficiently.

give a significant amount of power to the mobile nodes of ad-hoc networks. Because of all this
the energy consumption is also an important issue. Due to limited battery power, some other
issues like if some node gets fail, which results in loss of data packets and no reliable data

detects the node failure (due to energy) before it actually happens. Because of this network
lifetime gets improved. The proposed routing algorithm is energy efficient as compared to

A systematic approach to evaluating the influence of demand side management r...journalBEEI
Available transfer capability is an index to measure the security and economic viability of an interconnected system. However, to accurately determine this index, other associated parameters need to be accurately evaluated. One of these parameters is the capacity benefit margin (CBM). For efficient power generation reliability and sustainability, a certain amount of supply capacity is commonly reserved by utilities, which in most cases remain unused, to reduce the effect of generation outage. To minimize this unused reserve, utilities usually reserve a predetermined amount of tie-line capacity between interconnected areas to have access to external supply. This tie-line reserved for this purpose is termed as capacity benefit margin (CBM). In this paper a technique for computing CBM is used, the sensitivity of CBM support from other areas to the increase in load in one of the areas is investigated, and conclusively, demand side management is proposed to improve the quantification of CBM. The contribution of this work is the assessment of the CBMs support from other areas during a critical condition, using the flexibility of DSM technique. The modified 24-bus IEEE reliability test system is employed for the verification of the approach.

Multi Area Economic Dispatch Using Secant Method and Tie Line MatrixIJAPEJOURNAL
In this paper, Secant method and tie line matrix are proposed to solve multi area economic dispatch (MAED) problem with tie line loss. Generator limits of all generators in each area are calculated at given area power demands plus export (or import) using secant method and the generator limits of all generators are modified as modified generator limits. Central economic dispatch (CED) problem is used to determine the output powers of all generators and finally power flows in all tie lines are determined from tie line matrix. Here, Secant method is applied to solve the CED problem. A modified tie line matrix is used to find power flow in each tie line and then tie line loss is calculated from the power flow in each tie line. The proposed approach has been tested on two-area (two generators in each area) system and four-area (four generators in each area) system. It is observed from various cases that the proposed approach provides optimally best solution in terms of cost with tie line loss with less computational burden.
Optimum reactive power compensation for distribution system using dolphin alg...IJECEIAES
The distribution system represents the connection between the consumers and entire power network. The radial structure is preferred for distribution system due to its simple design and low cost. It suffers from problems of rising power losses higher than the transmission system and voltage drop. One of the important solutions to evolve the system voltage profile and to lower system losses is the reactive power compensation which is based on the optimum choice of position and capacitor size in the network. Different models of loads such as constant power (P), constant current (I), constant impedance (Z), and composite (ZIP) are implemented with comparisons among them in order to identify the most effective load type that produces the optimal settlement for minimization loss reduction, voltage profile enhancement and cost savings. Dolphin Optimization Algorithm (DOA) is applied for selecting the sizes and locations of capacitors. Two case studies (IEEE 16-bus and 33-bus) are employed to evaluate the different load models with optimal reactive power compensation. The results show that ZIP model is the best to produce the optimal solution for capacitors position and sizes. Comparison of results with literature works shows that DOA is the most robust among the other algorithms.
A New Methodology for Active Power Transmission Loss Allocation in Deregulate...IJECEIAES
This paper presents a new method for transmission loss allocation in a deregulated power system. As the power loss is a nonlinear quantity, so to allocate the loss in a common transmission corrider is a difficult task. It allocates transmission losses to loads based on the actual power flow in the lossy lines due to the concerned load. Each lossy line is subdivided into as many sub-lines as corresponding to the numbers of load attached to it. The tracing of power flow through each sub-line is worked out by using proportional sharing method. The power loss in each lossy line is equal with the total loss due to all the sub-lines under it. Then by using Pro-rata for each lossy line, the individual loss for each sub-line is formulated. As the application of Pro-rata is limited to an individual line of the system, so the error in calculation is minimized. The total loss allocated to a particular load is the sum of losses occurred in each lossy lines through which the power is flowing to the concerned load. As this method is based on the actual flow of power in the transmission line corresponding to the concerned load, hence, the loss allocation made by the method gives proper and justifiable allocations to the different loads which are attached to the system. The proposed method is applied to a six-bus system and finds the mismatch in the commonly used methods. Then, it is applied to higher bus systems in which more accurate results are obtained compared to the other methods.
Multi-objective optimal placement of distributed generations for dynamic loadsIJECEIAES
Large amount of active power losses and low voltage profile are the two major issues concerning the integration of distributed generations with existing power system networks. High R/X ratio and long distance of radial network further aggravates the issues. Optimal placement of distributed generators can address these issues significantly by alleviating active power losses and ameliorating voltage profile in a cost effective manner. In this research, multi-objective optimal placement problem is decomposed into minimization of total active power losses, maximization of bus voltage profile enhancement and minimization of total generation cost of a power system network for static and dynamic load characteristics. Optimum utilization factor for installed generators and available loads is scaled by the analysis of yearly load-demand curve of a network. The developed algorithm of N-bus system is implemented in IEEE-14 bus standard test system to demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed method in different loading conditions.

A new design of fuzzy logic controller optimized by PSO-SCSO applied to SFO-D...IJECEIAES
In this article, a new strategy for the design of fuzzy logic controllers (FLC) is proposed. This strategy is based on the optimization of the FLC, by the hybridization between the particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO) and the sine-cosine swarm optimization algorithm (SCSO), This new strategy is called FLC-PSCSO. The input-output gains and the geometric shapes of the triangular membership functions of the FLC are the objective functions to be optimized. The optimization of the latter is obtained by minimizing a cost function based on the combination of two criteria, the integral time absolute error (ITAE) and the integral absolute error (IAE). A comparison between the conventional FLC and the proposed FLC-PSCSO is made. The FLC optimized by PSCSO shows a remarkable improvement in the performance of the controlled induction motor.

Enhancing energy efficient dynamic load balanced clustering protocol using Dy...IJTET Journal
Mobile Ad hoc Network (MANET) is a kind of self configuring and self describing wireless ad hoc networks. MANET has characteristics of topology dynamics due to factors such as energy conservation and node movement that leads to dynamic load balanced clustering problem (DLBCP). It is necessary to have an effective clustering algorithm for adapting the topology change. Generally, Clustering is mainly used to reduce the topology size. In this, we used load balance and energy metric in GA to solve the DLBCP. It is important to select the energy efficient cluster head for maintaining the cluster structure and balance the load effectively. Elitism based Immigrants Genetic algorithm (EIGA) and Memory Enhanced Genetic Algorithm (MEGA) are used to solve DLBCP. These schemes will select the optimal cluster head by considering the parameters includes distance and energy. We used EIGA to maintain the diversity level of the population and memory scheme (MEGA) to store the old environments into the memory. It promises the energy efficiency for the entire cluster structure to increase the lifetime of the network. The experimental results show that the proposed schemes increases the network life time and reduces the energy consumption.
A hybrid objective function with empirical stability aware to improve RPL for...IJECEIAES
The diverse applications of the internet of things (IoT) require adaptable routing pro- tocol able to cope with several constraints. Thus, RPL protocol was designed to meet the needs for IoT networks categorized as low power and lossy networks (LLN). RPL uses an objective function based on specific metrics for preferred parents selection through these packets are sent to root. The single routing metric issue generally doesn’t satisfy all routing performance requirements, whereas some are improved others are degraded. In that purpose, we propose a hybrid objective function with empirical stability aware (HOFESA), implemented in the network layer of the embedded operating system CONTIKI, which combines linearly three weighty metrics namely hop count, RSSI and node energy consumption. Also, To remedy to frequent preferred parents changes problems caused by taking into account more than one metric, our proposal relies on static and empirical thresholds. The designed HOFESA, evaluated under COOJA emulator against Standard-RPL and EC-OF, showed a packet delivery ratio improvement, a decrease in the power consumption, the convergence time and DIO control messages as well as it gives network stability through an adequate churn.

Voltage Profile Improvement of distribution system Using Particle Swarm Optim...IJERA Editor
Distributed generations (DGs) play an important role in distribution networks. Distributed generation (DG) exists in distribution systems and is installed by either the utility or the customers. Distributed Generators (DGs) are now commonly used in distribution systems to reduce the power disruption in the power system network. Due to the installation of DGs in the system, the total power loss can be reduced and voltage profile of the buses can be improved due to this power quality of the distribution system is improved. Studies show that non-optimal locations and non-optimal sizes of DG units may lead to losses increase, together with bad effect on voltage profile. So, this paper aims at determining optimal DG allocation and sizing. To do so, the optimization technique named Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is used .this Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) approach), capable to establish the optimal DG allocation and sizing on a distribution network. This paper presents optimal placement and estimation of distributed generation (DG) capacity using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) approach in the distribution systems to reduce the real power losses and to gain voltage profile improvement. The proposed (PSO) based approach is tested on an IEEE 30-bus test system.
Improvement of voltage profile for large scale power system using soft comput...TELKOMNIKA JOURNAL
In modern power system operation, control, and planning, reactive power as part of power system component is very important in order to supply electrical load such as an electric motor. However, the reactive current that flows from the generator to load demand can cause voltage drop and active power loss. Hence, it is essential to install a compensating device such as a shunt capacitor close to the load bus to improve the voltage profile and decrease the total power loss of transmission line system. This paper presents the application of a genetic algorithm (GA), particle swarm optimization (PSO), and artificial bee colony (ABC)) to obtain the optimal size of the shunt capacitor where those capacitors are located on the critical bus. The effectiveness of the proposed technique is examined by utilizing Java-Madura-Bali (JAMALI) 500 kV power system grid as the test system. From the simulation results, the PSO and ABC algorithms are providing satisfactory results in obtaining the capacitor size and can reduce the total power loss of around 15.873 MW. Moreover, a different result is showed by the GA approach where the power loss in the JAMALI 500kV power grid can be compressed only up to 15.54 MW or 11.38% from the power system operation without a shunt capacitor. The three soft computing techniques could also maintain the voltage profile within 1.05 p.u and 0.95 p.u.
Nowadays, the location and sizing of distributed generation (DG) units in power system network are crucial to be at optimal as it will affect the power system operation in terms of stability and security. In this paper, a new technique termed as Immune Log-Normal Evolutionary Programming (ILNEP) is applied to find the optimal location and size of distributed generation units in power system network. Voltage stability is considered in solving this problem. The proposed technique has been tested on the IEEE 26 bus Reliability Test System to find the optimal location and size of distributed generation in transmission network. In order to study the performance of ILNEP technique in solving DG Installation problem, the results produced by ILNEP were compared with other meta-heuristic techniques like evolutionary programming (EP) and artificial immune system (AIS). It is found that the proposed technique gives better solution in term of lower total system loss compared to the other two techniques.

This paper presents the need to operate the power
system economically and with optimum levels of voltages has
further led to an increase in interest in Distributed
Generation. In order to reduce the power losses and to improve
the voltage in the distribution system, distributed generators
(DGs) are connected to load bus. To reduce the total power
losses in the system, the most important process is to identify
the proper location for fixing and sizing of DGs. It presents a
new methodology using a new population based meta heuristic
approach namely Artificial Bee Colony algorithm(ABC) for
the placement of Distributed Generators(DG) in the radial
distribution systems to reduce the real power losses and to
improve the voltage profile, voltage sag mitigation. The power
loss reduction is important factor for utility companies because
it is directly proportional to the company benefits in a
competitive electricity market, while reaching the better power
quality standards is too important as it has vital effect on
customer orientation. In this paper an ABC algorithm is
developed to gain these goals all together. In order to evaluate
sag mitigation capability of the proposed algorithm, voltage
in voltage sensitive buses is investigated. An existing 20KV
network has been chosen as test network and results are
compared with the proposed method in the radial distribution
system.
Performance comparison of distributed generation installation arrangement in ...journalBEEI
Placing Distributed Generation (DG) into a power network should be planned wisely. In this paper, the comparison of having different installation arrangement of real-power DGs in transmission system for loss control is presented. Immune-brainstorm-evolutionary programme (IBSEP) was chosen as the optimization technique. It is found that optimizing fixed-size DGs locations gives the highest loss reduction percentage. Apart from that, scattered small-sized DGs throughout a network minimizes transmission loss more than allocating one biger-sized DG at a location.
This paper presents the implementation of multiple distributed generations planning in distribution system using computational intelligence technique. A pre-developed computational intelligence optimization technique named as Embedded Meta EP-Firefly Algorithm (EMEFA) was utilized to determine distribution loss and penetration level for the purpose of distributed generation (DG) installation. In this study, the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) was used in order to solve the complexity of the multiple DG concepts. EMEFA-ANN was developed to optimize the weight of the ANN to minimize the mean squared error. The proposed method was validated on IEEE 69 Bus distribution system with several load variations scenario. The case study was conducted based on the multiple unit of DG in distribution system by considering the DGs are modeled as type I which is capable of injecting real power. Results obtained from the study could be utilized by the utility and energy commission for loss reduction scheme in distribution system.

Minimization of real power loss and improvement of voltage authenticity of
the network are amongst the key issues confronting power systems owing to
the heavy demand development problem, contingency of transmission and
distribution lines and the financial costs. The distributed generators (DG) has
become one of the strongest mitigating strategies for the network power loss
and to optimize voltage reliability over integration of capacitor banks and
network reconfiguration. This paper introduces an approach for the
optimizing the placement and sizes of different types of DGs in radial
distribution systems using a fine-tuned particle swarm optimization (PSO).
The suggested approach is evaluated on IEEE 33, IEEE 69 and a real

methodology could accomplish a significant reduction in network power loss
than the other research works.

In this work, a modern algorithm by hybrid genetic algorithm and ant colony algorithm is designed to placement and then simulated to determine the amount of reactive power by D-STATCOM. Also this method will be able to minimize the power system losses that contain power loss in transmission lines. Furthermore, in this design a IEEE 30-bus model depicted and three D-STATCOM are located in this system according to Economic Considerations. The optimal placement of each D-STATCOM is computed by the ant colony algorithm. In order to optimize placement for each D-STATCOM, two groups of ant are selected, which respectively located in near nest and far from the nest. Moreover, for every output simulation of D-STATCOM that is used to produce or absorb of reactive power, a genetic algorithm to minimizing the total network losses is applied. Finally, the result of this simulation shows net losses reduction about 150% that it verifies the new algorithm performance.

CFD Simulation of By-pass Flow in a HRSG module by R&R Consult.pptxR&R Consult
CFD analysis is incredibly effective at solving mysteries and improving the performance of complex systems!
Here's a great example: At a large natural gas-fired power plant, where they use waste heat to generate steam and energy, they were puzzled that their boiler wasn't producing as much steam as expected.
R&R and Tetra Engineering Group Inc. were asked to solve the issue with reduced steam production.
An inspection had shown that a significant amount of hot flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes, where the heat was supposed to be transferred.
R&R Consult conducted a CFD analysis, which revealed that 6.3% of the flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes without transferring heat. The analysis also showed that the flue gas was instead being directed along the sides of the boiler and between the modules that were supposed to capture the heat. This was the cause of the reduced performance.
Based on our results, Tetra Engineering installed covering plates to reduce the bypass flow. This improved the boiler's performance and increased electricity production.
It is always satisfying when we can help solve complex challenges like this. Do your systems also need a check-up or optimization? Give us a call!

Optimal Distributed Generation Siting and Sizing by Considering Harmonic Limits using SLPSO Page 22
I. INTRODUCTION
DG generally refers to small-scale (typically 1 kW – 50
MW) electric power generators that produce electricity at a
site close to customers or that are tied to an electric
distribution system [1]. Optimal DG placement (ODGP)
can improve network performance in terms of voltage
profile, reduce flows and system losses and also improve
power quality and reliability of supply. The DG units are
of two types namely utility owned DG units and customer
owned DG units [2]. In the case of a utility owned DG
installation, the utility has to optimally plan the location
and size of the DG units in order to improve network
benefits and reliability [3]. In the case of customer owned
DG installation, the utility planner should conduct
feasibility and assessment study to evaluate any technical
issues resulting from the new installation of customer
owned DG installation [4].
A new optimization approach that employs an Artificial
Bee Colony (ABC) algorithm to determine the optimal DG
units size, power factor and location in order to minimize
the total system real power loss [5]. The closed form
equations are used for determining allowable penetration
levels of DG resources [6]. The effect of DG on
coordination will depends on the size, type, and placement
of DG. The paper [7] explores that the effect of high DG
penetration on protective device coordination. The
advantages of installing DG in distribution systems are
improving reliability, mitigating voltage sags, unloading
sub transmission and transmission system [8].
In [9] the harmonic filter planning is presented as a
combinational optimization problem, which is solved using
Genetic Algorithms. Here the current injection method is
used to determine the harmonic flow in a radial
distribution feeder. In ref [10] a fuzzy-based approach for
optimal placement and sizing of fixed capacitor banks in
radial distribution networks in the presence of voltage and
current harmonics.
A new method, based on interactive Multi Objective
Nonlinear Programming (MONLP), using Genetic
Algorithms (GAs) to study passive filter planning [11].
When the system condition changes, the passive filters
may be most likely to cause other power quality problem
or have less impact on mitigation of harmonics. An
analytical approach [12] is used to minimize the system
losses by installing various types of DG units and finding
optimal size and power factor of four types of distributed
generation (DG) units.
PSO is being used to evolve not only the network
weights, but also the network structure. The method is so
simple, efficient and this approach is effective for any
network architecture [13]. The particle swarm optimizer
has been found to be robust and fast in solving nonlinear,
non-differentiable, multi-modal problems.

III. SOCIAL LEARNING PARTICLE SWARM
OPTIMIZATION
In 1921, some British birds were first seen to open milk
bottles in the small town of Swaythling. In the following
25 years, such observations had been continually reported
from numerous other sites spreading all over the Great
Britain and even some other areas in the European
continent. This is the first evidence of social learning,
where the birds are believed to learn to open milk bottles
by observations and interactions with other birds, instead
of learning by themselves.
During the past decades, various mechanisms have been
proposed and discussed in social learning theory, e.g.,
stimulus enhancement and local enhancement,
observational conditioning, contagion and social
facilitation. Among these mechanisms, the most interesting
social learning mechanism is imitation, which is
considered to be distinctive from other social learning
mechanisms, because imitation, which operates across a
whole community, could lead to population- level
similarities of behavior such as culture or tradition. Such
population-level similarities may imply convergence of a
dynamic system, thus providing its essential applicability
in an evolutionary algorithm [14].
Inspired by social learning mechanism, an imitator will
learn the behaviors of different demonstrators in the
following manner:
where is the j-th dimension of particle i’s behavior
vector in generation t, with and
; is the behavior
correction. Taking into account the fact that in a society,
the motivation to learnfrom better individuals may vary
from individual to individual (typically, better individuals
are less willing to learn from others), we define a learning
probability PLi for each particle i. The flowchart of
SLPSO algorithm is depicted in Fig 1.

The particle i will learn (correct its behavior vector)

The swarm size m be determined as a function of the

Consider the three phase fault is occurred at location 6,
then the fault current flowing through the bus is 9.6139
p.u., There are 6 relays are used for protection
coordination, one is primary relay and other 5 relays are
backup relays. If the fault is occurred at location 6, then
the primary relay is used to detect the fault. If the primary
relay is fails to operate then the backup relay is used to
detect the fault with minimum operating time to protect the
system from damage. The primary and backup relays
opreting time is tabulated below in Table 2 and Fig. 4.

The comparison of real power losses without and with
DG for IEEE 30 bus system is tabulated in Table 3. After
placing the DGs, the real power loss is reduced from
2.4438 MW to 1.6772 MW. In this case, the values of
percentage reduction in real power losses are nearly
31.3696%.

V. CONCLUSION
This method of optimal placement and capacity of DGs
using the SLPSO has been implemented for 30 bus system.
The improper location and incorrect size of DG units can
cause major disturbances in power system network. The
DG penetration level is limited by fault current levels,
protection coordination of relays, harmonic distortion,
stability and power quality.
The objective of the proposed optimization problem is
to maximize the DG penetration level and loss
minimization subject to power balance constraints and
total harmonic distortion limits. The result shows that the
maximum DG penetration level is limited by harmonic
distortion level. Therefore, in this paper the bus
corresponding to the minimum value of THD is identified
as optimal location of DGs for the improved voltage
profile and reduced losses in the systems. The proposed
optimization method can serve as a good planning tool for
the utility operator to optimally allocate DG of different
types in order to achieve better penetration level.
