INTRODUCTION
Computer system is a combination of hardware and
software. Software consisting application software and
system software. System software also called as operating
system. To perform any functions in a computer we need both
application software and system software.
Operating system is a system software that acts as a
intermediary between user of a computer and the computer
hardware.
Meaning of Operating System
Operating System is a group of software specially
design to help the user to manage and operate the computer
system.
An operating system is the program that initially
loaded into a computer by a root program to manage all of
the other application programs in a computer.
Features of Operating System
Some of the features of operating system are as under
Provide platform for running application
Handles memory and CPU scheduling
Provide network support
Provide security features
Support application development
System services
History of Operating System
The general motors research lab implemented
the first OS in 1956 for their IBM 701
The first OS developed in 1950 to manage the
tape storage
In 1960’sIBM started developing their
operating system and also started distribution
of OS
The Microsoft first developed the operating
system was DOS in 1981 by purchasing the
Seattle company 86-DOS Software
The present-day popular OS windows first
came to existence in 1985 when GUI was
created s and paired with MS-DOS
In the late 1960’s the first version of the Unix
operating system developed
Functions of Operating System
Process management
Memory management
Device management
File management
Errors detection
Security
Resource management
Job scheduling
Process management
Process management is a key feature of an operating system
that handles the creation, planning, execution, and termination of
processes or tasks within a computer system. The main components of
process management are listed below.
Process Creation
Process Scheduling
Process Execution
Process Termination
Process Synchronization and
Communication.
Process States and Control.
Memory management
Memory management plays a vital role in any operating
system. It encompasses the allocation, tracking, and
deallocation of computer memory resources. Its main
objective is to effectively use currently available memory to
facilitate the execution of processes and applications.
Allocation
De-allocation
Address Mapping
Paging and Swapping
Memory Protection
Virtual Memory
File management
Managing the file system is an essential task
performed by an operating system. It involves arranging,
storing, and retrieving files on various storage devices.
File Organization
File Creation and Deletion
File Access and Permissions
File Operations
File Metadata Management
File System Integrity and
Recovery
Device management
Device Management is an essential task for an operating system. It
involves regulating and coordinating the communication between the
computer system and its input/output (I/O) devices.
Device Drivers. .
Device Allocation
Device Configuration
Device Input and Output
Device Synchronization
Error detection
it check the system for external threat, software activity and
also check the hardware for any type of damages like, dumps, traces,
error messages, so that the appropriate action can taken
Job scheduling
in a multitasking operating system where
multiple program run simultaneously. The OS
determines which application should run in which
order and how time should be allowed to each
application.
Resource management
it manage is the memory CPU time and other
hardware resources among the various program and the
process running on the computer.
Security
Ensuring the safety and protection of a computer system, its
resources, and the data it processes are essential functions of an
operating system.

Access Control
Data Encryption
Malware Detection and Prevention
Firewalls and Intrusion Detection System
 Batch Operating System
This is does not interact with computer directly and
operator takes of similar job and group them together into a
branch or batch . Then these batches are executed one by one
based on first come first serve principle.
Distributed Operating System
This is a type of operation system that managers a
group of different computers and make appear to a single
computer. This is design to operate on a network of
computers they are low multiple users of access shared
resources and communicate with each other over the
network.
Network Operating Systems
It is runs on a server and provides the capability to
manage data user groups security and application and other
networking functions.
Popular network operating systems:
Windows NT
Windows server 2003 and 2008
Linux
Unix
Mac OS
 Real Time Operating System
It serves a real time system and the time interval
required to process and response to input. It design to
respond to event in a real time like robotics, industrial
control system.
Multi Programming Operating System
It is used to boost the performance of
multiple CPU within a single computer so the job
can be divided and executed more quickly.
Multi User Operating System
These are designed to support multiple users
simultaneously for example Linux and Unix.
Examples Of Operating Systems
 Android : Google operated system for tablets smart phone
and smart watches
 iOS : Apple OS for i Phone i Pad and i Pad touch
 Mac OS : used for apples personal computer and
workstations
 Windows : GUI based PC
 GNU Linux : personal workstation ISP file and print
server three tyre client or server
Conclusion
Operating System is a software program
that act as an interface between the hardware the
applications software and the uses operating
system managers all other applications and
programs in a computer and it is loaded into a
computer by a boat program.

  • 16. Resource management it manage is the memory CPU time and other hardware resources among the various program and the process running on the computer.
  • 17. Security Ensuring the safety and protection of a computer system, its resources, and the data it processes are essential functions of an operating system.  Access Control Data Encryption Malware Detection and Prevention Firewalls and Intrusion Detection System

  • 19.  Batch Operating System This is does not interact with computer directly and operator takes of similar job and group them together into a branch or batch . Then these batches are executed one by one based on first come first serve principle.
  • 20. Distributed Operating System This is a type of operation system that managers a group of different computers and make appear to a single computer. This is design to operate on a network of computers they are low multiple users of access shared resources and communicate with each other over the network.
  • 21. Network Operating Systems It is runs on a server and provides the capability to manage data user groups security and application and other networking functions. Popular network operating systems: Windows NT Windows server 2003 and 2008 Linux Unix Mac OS
  • 22.  Real Time Operating System It serves a real time system and the time interval required to process and response to input. It design to respond to event in a real time like robotics, industrial control system.
  • 23. Multi Programming Operating System It is used to boost the performance of multiple CPU within a single computer so the job can be divided and executed more quickly.
  • 24. Multi User Operating System These are designed to support multiple users simultaneously for example Linux and Unix.
  • 25. Examples Of Operating Systems  Android : Google operated system for tablets smart phone and smart watches  iOS : Apple OS for i Phone i Pad and i Pad touch  Mac OS : used for apples personal computer and workstations  Windows : GUI based PC  GNU Linux : personal workstation ISP file and print server three tyre client or server
