LISTENING :
 Listening is the ability to accurately receive
and interpret messages in the
communication process.
Listening involves 4 important components :
 Hear
 Comprehend
 Retain
 Recall
STAGES OF LISTENING :
Receiving Interpreting Remembering Evaluating Responding
Receiving :
 Physical hearing of message
 Taking note of message
Possible barriers :
 Noise
 Poor hearing
 Lack of attention
Interpreting:
 This is where you infer the speaker’s meaning based
on your own experiences and expectations as well as
your own values, beliefs, ideas and needs.
 Remembering :
 Now you store the message for future reference. Perhaps
you take notes as you are listening or make a mental
note of the key points as they are mentioned.
 Evaluating :
 Now it is important to consider the points mentioned and
assess their importance. You will need to separate facts from
opinion and assess the quality of the facts provided by the
speaker.
 Responding :
 When you have had chance to evaluate the speaker’s
message, it is usual to react in some way. In a one-to-one
group situation, perhaps you will give a verbal feedback or
nods or sounds of agreement. In a larger audience, your
initial reaction to a message may be to laugh or applaud.
 Conclusion :
 In conclusion, listening is an essential and powerful skill that
profoundly impacts our personal and professional lives. It is the
foundation of effective communication and plays crucial role in
building strong relationships and connections with others. By
valuing our listening abilities, we can create a more understanding
society where communication thrives and individuals feel
genuinely heard and respected.

  • 2. LISTENING :  Listening is the ability to accurately receive and interpret messages in the communication process. Listening involves 4 important components :  Hear  Comprehend  Retain  Recall
  • 3. STAGES OF LISTENING : Receiving Interpreting Remembering Evaluating Responding
  • 4. Receiving :  Physical hearing of message  Taking note of message Possible barriers :  Noise  Poor hearing  Lack of attention
  • 5. Interpreting:  This is where you infer the speaker’s meaning based on your own experiences and expectations as well as your own values, beliefs, ideas and needs.
  • 6.  Remembering :  Now you store the message for future reference. Perhaps you take notes as you are listening or make a mental note of the key points as they are mentioned.
  • 7.  Evaluating :  Now it is important to consider the points mentioned and assess their importance. You will need to separate facts from opinion and assess the quality of the facts provided by the speaker.
  • 8.  Responding :  When you have had chance to evaluate the speaker’s message, it is usual to react in some way. In a one-to-one group situation, perhaps you will give a verbal feedback or nods or sounds of agreement. In a larger audience, your initial reaction to a message may be to laugh or applaud.
  • 9.  Conclusion :  In conclusion, listening is an essential and powerful skill that profoundly impacts our personal and professional lives. It is the foundation of effective communication and plays crucial role in building strong relationships and connections with others. By valuing our listening abilities, we can create a more understanding society where communication thrives and individuals feel genuinely heard and respected.
