Taking Security Groups to Ludicrous Speed with OVS (OpenStack Summit 2015)Thomas Graf
Open vSwitch (OVS) has long been a critical component of the Neutron's reference implementation, offering reliable and flexible virtual switching for cloud environments.
Being an early adopter of the OVS technology, Neutron's reference implementation made some compromises to stay within the early, stable featureset OVS exposed. In particular, Security Groups (SG) have been so far implemented by leveraging hybrid Linux Bridging and IPTables, which come at a significant performance overhead. However, thanks to recent developments and ongoing improvements within the OVS community, we are now able to implement feature-complete security groups directly within OVS.
In this talk we will summarize the existing Security Groups implementation in Neutron and compare its performance with the Open vSwitch-only approach. We hope this analysis will form the foundation of future improvements to the Neutron Open vSwitch reference design.
The Open vSwitch kernel datapath may have flows offloaded to hardware using the TC Flower classifier and related actions. This is a powerful mechanism to both increase throughput and reduce CPU utilisation. This presentation will give an overview of the evolution of this offload mechanism: features available in OvS v2.8, those targeted at v2.9 and possible future directions.
This presentation covers the basics about OpenvSwitch and its components. OpenvSwitch is a Open Source implementation of OpenFlow by the Nicira team.

Snabb Switch: Riding the HPC wave to simpler, better network appliances (FOSD...Igalia

Driven by the needs of scientific computing, rapid rises in memory bandwidth have made it possible to implement high-performance network functions in a radically simpler way. Snabb Switch rides this wave, bypassing the kernel to process network packets in terse Lua, leaving the programmer free to focus on the essence of their problem. This talk presents our experiences delivering a carrier-grade implementation of "lightweight 4 over 6", an IPv4-as-a-service architecture that tunnels access to the IPv4 internet through specialized Snabb appliances.
We report on our recent experience implementing a carrier-grade virtualized network function, with observations on what it is like to build real-world, high-performance Snabb applications. (and kernel bypass). Each instance runs at essentially line speed on two ten-gigabit Ethernet cards.
Lightweight 4-over-6 (lw4o6) defines an IPv4-as-a-service architecture that allows ISPs to internally operate an IPv6-only network, tunneling IPv4 connections between lw4o6-aware endpoints installed at the customer's site (e.g. in OpenWRT) and an internet-facing "lwAFTR". Lw4o6 was specified in 2015 as RFC 7596 and has the architectural advantage that the carrier-side lwAFTR only needs per-customer state, not per-flow state. An lw4o6 system can also be configured to share IPv4 addresses between multiple customers as part of an IPv4 exhaustion strategy. It allows IPv4 networks to interoperate smoothly, while a carrier between them runs a pure-IPv6 network.
Igalia has built an open source "lwAFTR" implementation that is ready to deploy in production. We describe the joys of hacking with Snabb, giving a quick intro to Snabb, modern x86, and lw4o6 along the way.

We'll use a new solution stack framed around a new software forwarder (""VPP"") provided by the FD.io project as example for this session. This talk will give you an overview on OpenStack Networking. We will first go through a little bit of theory on the challenges that traditional Networking has in OpenStack, and in cloud environments in general. We will then explore the options given to us by the OpenStack community and ecosystem. After this we will go into more implementation details of OpenSource implementations of programatic overlays, traditional bridging, and some of the commercially available plugins.
This is my latest OpenStack Networking presentation. I presented it at OSDC 2014. It includes a lot of backup slides with CLI outputs that show how ML2 with the OVS agent creates GRE based overlay networks and logical routers
Linux Kernel vs DPDK: HTTP Performance ShowdownScyllaDB
In this session I will use a simple HTTP benchmark to compare the performance of the Linux kernel networking stack with userspace networking powered by DPDK (kernel-bypass).
It is said that kernel-bypass technologies avoid the kernel because it is "slow", but in reality, a lot of the performance advantages that they bring just come from enforcing certain constraints.
As it turns out, many of these constraints can be enforced without bypassing the kernel. If the system is tuned just right, one can achieve performance that approaches kernel-bypass speeds, while still benefiting from the kernel's battle-tested compatibility, and rich ecosystem of tools.
CORD aims to bring the data center economy and cloud agility to the service provider networks and is an end-to-end solution for the next generation central offices. CORD leverages three related technologies: SDN, NFV, and Cloud and builds on merchant silicon, white boxes and open-source platforms such as ONOS, OpenStack, and XOS. ON.Lab, AT&T and partners demonstrated CORD POC at ONS2015 and are now building a CORD POD for a market trial.
The CORD thought leaders and developers introduce CORD, explain the motivation from a service provider perspective, discuss CORD architecture, related services and key use cases including vOLT, vSG and vRouter.

This webinar explains why PISA chips are inevitable, provides overview of machine architecture of such switches, presents a brief primer on the P4 language with sample programs for a variety of networks and demonstrates a powerful network diagnostics application implemented in P4.
Programmability in SDNs is confined to the network control plane. The forwarding plane is still largely dictated by fixed-function switching chips. Our goal is to change that, and to allow programmers to define how packets are to be processed all the way down to the wire.
This is made possible by a new generation of high-performance forwarding chips. At the high-end, PISA (Protocol-Independent Switch Architecture) chips promise multi-Tb/s of packet processing. At the mid- and low-end of the performance spectrum, CPUs, GPUs, FPGAs, and NPUs already offer great flexibility with performance of a few tens to hundreds of Gb/s.
In addition to programmable forwarding chips, we also need a high-level language to dictate the forwarding behavior in a target independent fashion. "P4" (www.p4.org) is such a language. In P4, the programer declares how packets are to be processed, and a compiler generates a configuration for a PISA chip, or a programmable target in general. For example, the programmer might program the switch to be a top-of-rack switch, a firewall, or a load-balancer; and might add features to run automatic diagnostics and novel congestion control algorithms.

As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
