Multiple Passenger Ride Sharing Changes Economics of CommutingJeffrey Funk
While Uber has challenged taxi drivers, multiple passenger ride sharing service can give us the both of best worlds: short travel times and low prices. They can provide the low prices of public transport with the short travel times of private cars or single passenger taxis. Different than Uber Pool or other crowd sourcing services, the key is for the startup to guarantee both short travel times and low prices, even if demand does not initially exist. This can be be done by having better data on the starting and ending points of travelers, which enables us to identify high demand routes and times and thus enable services that have few stops. The fewer stops enable short transit times and the multiple passengers in cars, vans, or mini-buses can reduce costs.

How does Indian Railways perform at its best using the modern tools of Information Systems and Information Technology ?
What makes them the fourth largest yet some of the most efficient ?
The story of digitalisation and integration of Internet with the Indian Railways.
Ride Sharing, Congestion, and the Need for Real SharingJeffrey Funk
Current ride sharing services are not financially sustainable. Although they provide more convenience than do taxi services, they are experiencing massive losses because they have the same cost structure as do taxis and thus must compete through subsidies and lower wages. After all, they use the same vehicles, roads, and drivers, and only GPS algorithms and phones are new.
They also increase congestion. Just as more private vehicles or taxis on the road will increase congestion, more ride sharing vehicles also increase congestion.
These slides describe new ways to use the technologies of ride sharing to reduce congestion along with costs while at the same time keeping travel time low. This can be done through changing public transportation systems or allowing private companies to offer competing services. For instance, current bus services, whether they are private or public, need to use the algorithms, GPS, phones and other technologies of ride sharing to revise routes, schedules and the premises that currently underpin public transportation. There is no reason a bus should be certain size, stop every 200 meters, or follow the same route all day. Algorithms and phones enable new types of routes in which designers simultaneously minimize time travel and maximize number of passengers transported per vehicle.hour.

Automatic Railway Gate Control System Using Androidijtsrd
The project is designed to control over the railway level crossing gate using Android mobile phone by the gate keeper. Opening and closing of railway level crossing gate involves manpower, which could be often causes incorrect leading to accidents. This system prevents the need of any human involvement at the railway level crossing. This system involves opening and closing of the level crossing gate by using an Android app. This Remote operation is achieved by any smart-phone Tablet etc., with Android OS, upon a Graphical User Interface based touch screen operation. A Bluetooth device is interfaced with the system. When the gate keeper sent command to close from the Android application device when the train is approaching at the level crossing to the Bluetooth device which while supply to the microcontroller, sends an output signal which activates a mechanism to switch on the motor to close the gate. To open the gate, another command needs to be sent for the microcontroller to open the gate using motor driver integrated circuit. In this project we use a microcontroller of 8051 families, and the input to its Bluetooth device which takes command from the user Android application. The output to microcontroller is given to a motor by using a motor driver integrated circuit for some required operation. The status, whether the gate is open or close is displayed on an LCD liquefied crystal display interfaced to the microcontroller. Miss. Snehal Patil | Miss. Komal Jadhav | Miss. The necessity of mobile train radio communication in indiaeSAT Journals
Abstract Presently, India has the dubious distinction of recording an exponential number of train accidents as compared to its other developed counterparts. Though, no accident is completely avoidable, what can be done is to develop a certain technologically advanced machinery which can scale down the prospects of such accidents and expedite Disaster Management in case of any mishap. This would help to curtail the damage to life and property. The “Mobile Train Radio Communication (MTRC) “system is a dynamic and technologically avant-garde system based on the “Global System for Mobile Communication-Railways (GSM-R)” technology and it can play an intrinsic role in abbreviating train accidents by aiding effective communication. With the passage of time, India has shown its technological capability to the world, be it through the successful launch of the “Mangalyaan” in the very first attempt, the invention of various machines and electronic gadgets by the Engineers and Scientists across the country, the development of India as a nuclear power and so on. As Dr. D. Swaminadhan said in his speech, “Science and technology have been an integral part of Indian civilization and culture over the past several millennia”. India has the best of resources and technical minds available, through which it can move ahead of its other developed counterparts. As life is very precious, a major requirement of the present is to switch over to the “MTRC” system at the earliest. The railway accidents over the past decade cannot be neglected and the unfortunate events cannot be entirely reasoned as an event occurring out of chance. Trains are merely machines running on railway tracks and they cannot think of how to avoid accidents on their own. As B.F. Skinner rightly said “The real problem is not whether machines think, but whether men do”. It is up to the human beings to design and use an efficient system which can help the train driver and the station master to know about the possibility of any untoward hazard beforehand by developing effective communication between the concerned officials. Key Words: Train Communication, MTRC system , GSM-R Technology, Train Accident

Water scarcity is the lack of fresh water resources to meet the standard water demand. There are two type of water scarcity. One is physical. The other is economic water scarcity.
Hierarchical Digital Twin of a Naval Power SystemKerry Sado
A hierarchical digital twin of a Naval DC power system has been developed and experimentally verified. Similar to other state-of-the-art digital twins, this technology creates a digital replica of the physical system executed in real-time or faster, which can modify hardware controls. However, its advantage stems from distributing computational efforts by utilizing a hierarchical structure composed of lower-level digital twin blocks and a higher-level system digital twin. Each digital twin block is associated with a physical subsystem of the hardware and communicates with a singular system digital twin, which creates a system-level response. By extracting information from each level of the hierarchy, power system controls of the hardware were reconfigured autonomously. This hierarchical digital twin development offers several advantages over other digital twins, particularly in the field of naval power systems. The hierarchical structure allows for greater computational efficiency and scalability while the ability to autonomously reconfigure hardware controls offers increased flexibility and responsiveness. The hierarchical decomposition and models utilized were well aligned with the physical twin, as indicated by the maximum deviations between the developed digital twin hierarchy and the hardware.

CFD Simulation of By-pass Flow in a HRSG module by R&R Consult.pptxR&R Consult
CFD analysis is incredibly effective at solving mysteries and improving the performance of complex systems!
Here's a great example: At a large natural gas-fired power plant, where they use waste heat to generate steam and energy, they were puzzled that their boiler wasn't producing as much steam as expected.
R&R and Tetra Engineering Group Inc. were asked to solve the issue with reduced steam production.
An inspection had shown that a significant amount of hot flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes, where the heat was supposed to be transferred.
R&R Consult conducted a CFD analysis, which revealed that 6.3% of the flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes without transferring heat. The analysis also showed that the flue gas was instead being directed along the sides of the boiler and between the modules that were supposed to capture the heat. This was the cause of the reduced performance.
Based on our results, Tetra Engineering installed covering plates to reduce the bypass flow. This improved the boiler's performance and increased electricity production.
It is always satisfying when we can help solve complex challenges like this. Do your systems also need a check-up or optimization? Give us a call!
Work done in cooperation with James Malloy and David Moelling from Tetra Engineering.
